Prisons Worldwide Seek Ways to Ease the Coronavirus Crisis
According
to the federal
Bureau of Prisons, of the 2,700 coronavirus tests performed across the
prison system, "nearly 2,000 have come back positive." That is over 70 percent,
suggesting that that there are many more undetected coronavirus cases in the
U.S. prison system.
"A total of approximately 16,622 inmates nationwide have been released
due to the coronavirus outbreak. The majority were being held on non-violent
charges or were deemed to pose no immediate threat to society if released,"
Fox News explained.
How Will Release Strategy Affect Crime Rates?
This release strategy is likely to result in an increase in crime once
current quarantine restrictions are relaxed. The restrictions may result in
less of a crime spike immediately following their release, but historical
recidivism rates indicate that there is a high likelihood of re-offending.
In a nine-year study by the
United States Bureau of Justice Statistics, five in six state prisoners
- or 83 percent - who were released were re-arrested at least once.
Other prisons and jails around the world are facing a similar crisis. For
example, the pandemic has crippled Latin America's prisons, which also
are struggling due to gang control, limited financial resources, and
overcrowding. Over the past month in addition to the coronavirus
pandemic, prisons in
Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico have been rocked by riots, gang
violence, and mass escapes.

National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) is urging government actions

retail pharmacies, with 155,000 pharmacists, lists these steps in a new report

OSHA Issues Alert for Retail Pharmacies with Suggestions to Prevent the Spread
of COVID-19 in the Workplace
On May 14, 2020, OSHA issued an "Industry-Specific Alert" for retail
pharmacies that provides suggestions employers should implement to
prevent the spread of COVID-19. OSHA's Alerts do not have the force of formal
regulations, so a failure to implement a specific suggestion cannot
automatically serve as a basis for a citation. However, OSHA could use the
information in these Alerts to establish that employers know about a hazard
in the workplace. Employers that do not implement these specific suggestions
could face an OSHA inspection-or citation-for failure to remove a known hazard
in the workplace.
Still, the alert generally duplicates recommendations that have previously been
suggested by the CDC or already are required under various State Orders. The

Amazon in Talks to Buy JC Penney - News Outlets Are Screaming This
A Penney's deal would accelerate Amazon's
apparel and retail strategies
"There is an Amazon team in Plano [Tex.] as we speak," said one source
who does business with the web giant. "There is a dialogue and I'm told it has a
lot to do with Amazon eager to expand its apparel business - for sure."
Others speculate that Amazon could convert Penney's units to its own
high-tech retail format which, with their checkout-free environments,
seems most relevant in a socially distancing COVID-19 ravaged society. "This
could be a new tech-driven retail model," said the source.
Amazon could also convert some Penney's sites into distribution centers.
"Penney's has about 30 freestanding locations with a lot of land, which could be
converted," the source said. "They do have some good real estate."
But Amazon isn't the only one kicking the tires of the bankrupt retailer.
Some developers are also said to be eyeing Penney's, including the Simon
Property Group and Brookfield.
Meanwhile, J.C Penney is signaling its vision for a future built around a
shrunken store footprint - what it describes as a plan to streamline by
around 30 percent - as well as stronger e-commerce operations.
The 242 store closings listed in their 8k filing yesterday, isn't necessarily a
final number, and indicates just the company's "latest thinking on stores as of
April 2020," according to a footnote in the filing.
"The approximately 604 future fleet represent the highest sales-generating, most
profitable and most productive stores in the network," the company said in the
filing.

You can delay formal performance reviews,
but don't skip regular check-ins.
Ongoing performance management relies on regular check-ins. In the office
that may have occurred once a month or every other week. Levitt encourages her
clients to increase these conversations to once per week. The check-ins
provide an open forum for employees to share concerns, provide updates and ask
questions.
Video rather than phone-based check-ins are preferable. Virtual meeting
platforms allow managers to see the other person's facial expressions and
encourage a focused discussion.
Recognizing that employees may not be able to achieve 100 percent of their
previous workload is important. One company is asking teammates to revise
previous goals to those that are realistic in the current situation.
For companies moving forward with reviews, Levitt encourages them to
evaluate their procedures and find a way to simplify it. For example, if the
review is based on a formal grading system, a shift to a dialogue with a few
guided questions may be a better fit for the times, she said.

Organized Crime Driving Data Breaches Globally
Verizon's 2020 Data Breach Investigations Report
It's All About the Money
The
Verizon Business 2020 Data Breach Investigations Report (2020 DBIR) shows
that the vast majority of breaches continue to be caused by external actors -
70 percent - with organized crime accounting for 55 percent of these.
Credential theft and social attacks such as phishing and business email
compromises cause the majority of breaches (over 67 percent)and specifically:
- 37 percent of credential theft breaches used stolen or weak credentials,
- 25 percent involved phishing
- Human error accounted for 22 percent as well.
The 2020 DBIR also highlighted a year-over-year two-fold increase in web
application breaches, to 43 percent, and stolen credentials were used in more
than 80 percent of the cases - a worrying trend as business-critical workflows
continue to move to the cloud. Ransomware also saw a slight increase, found in
27 percent of malware incidents (compared to 24 percent in
2019 DBIR); 18 percent of organizations reported blocking at least one piece
of ransomware last year.
"As remote working surges in the face of the global pandemic, end-to-end
security from the cloud to employee laptop becomes paramount."
Common patterns offer a Defender Advantage
The 2020 DBIR has re-emphasized the common patterns found within cyber-attack
journeys, enabling organizations to determine the bad actors' destination while
they are in progress. Linked to the order of threat actions (e.g. Error,
Malware, Physical, Hacking), these breach pathways can help predict the eventual
breach target, enabling attacks to be stopped in their tracks. Organizations are
therefore able to gain a "Defender's Advantage" and better understand
where to focus their security defenses.
Industries under the cyber-spotlight
Retail: 99 percent of incidents were financially-motivated, with payment
data and personal credentials continuing to be prized. Web applications, rather
than Point of Sale (POS) devices, are now the main cause of Retail breaches.
Northern America: The technique most commonly leveraged was stolen
credentials, accounting for over 79 percent of hacking breaches; 33 percent of
breaches were associated with either phishing or pretexting.
Financial gain continues to drive organized crime to exploit system
vulnerabilities or human error. The good news is that there is a lot that
organizations can do to protect themselves, including the ability to track
common patterns within cyber-attack journeys - a security game changer - that
puts control back into the hands of organizations around the globe."

NIST Study Measures Performance Accuracy of Contactless Fingerprinting Tech

The
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has evaluated several
commercially available contactless fingerprint scanning technologies, allowing
users to compare their performance to conventional devices that require physical
contact between a person's fingers and the scanner.
The results of the study, published today as
NIST Interagency Report (NISTIR) 8307: Interoperability Assessment 2019:
Contactless-to-Contact Fingerprint Capture, show that devices
requiring physical contact remain superior to contactless technology at matching
scanned prints to images in a database. However, when contactless devices scan
multiple fingers on a hand, it improves their performance. Contactless devices
that scanned multiple fingers also seldom made "false positive" errors that
incorrectly matched one person's print with another's record.
The publication updates
NIST's July 2018 study on contactless capture and is intended to assist
organizations that use fingerprint-scanning technology.
"The report summarizes the state of the art of contactless fingerprint
scanning," said John Libert, one of the report's authors. "It can help anyone
interested in adopting contactless technology to evaluate the cost in
performance they might pay by switching to contactless fingerprint capture."

announced in its quarterly report that it would be discontinuing Jet.com,
the online-only marketplace that it
acquired when it was just over one year old for $3 billion.
The big question now will be whether Walmart can continue to grow its e-commerce
business, and reduce its losses, by shifting the focus from an Amazon-style
model of fulfilment warehouses to giant stores, which serve a double purpose
both to push its brick-and-mortar strategy, and to serve as the fulfilment
hubs for the online-facing part of its business.

NY Times Takes a Shot at Amazon's Slow Response
'Way Too Late': Inside Amazon's Biggest Outbreak
A warehouse in the foothills of the Poconos has had more known Covid-19 cases
than any of Amazon's others after missing early opportunities to protect
workers.
Local lawmakers believe that more than 100 workers have contracted the disease,
but the exact number is unknown. At first, Amazon told workers about each new
case. But when the total reached about 60, the announcements stopped giving
specific numbers.
The disclosures also stopped at other Amazon warehouses. The best estimate is
that more than 900 of the company's 400,000 blue-collar workers have had
the disease. But that number, crowdsourced by Jana Jumpp, an Amazon worker,
almost certainly understates the spread of the illness among Amazon's employees.
Amazon saw the pandemic up close before many American companies. In early
February, it
fretted about its global supply chain and consulted an
infectious-disease specialist.

Toledo, OH: Man accused of stealing over $4,000 worth of merchandise from JC
Penney
A
man from North Toledo is facing several theft charges for property he allegedly
stole from J.C. Penney at Franklin Park Mall. According to court records,
surveillance footage shows 39-year-old Carnelle Nelson from North Toledo
entering the store multiple times ranging from November through March, stealing
merchandise worth a total of $4,458. Nelson was arrested on Sunday and arraigned
in Toledo Municipal Court the following day. He is charged with seven counts of
theft with purpose to deprive and one count of unauthorized use of property
without consent of the owner.

in medications from CVS twice
Police said they are already accused of shoplifting $1,000 worth of
over-the-counter medications from CVS on March 21. Now, police said they are
accused of stealing $1,700 in over-the-counter medications CVS on Clifton
Boulevard at 3 p.m. on Friday. The suspects were seen walking into the CVS
together and talking inside on cellphones, according to police.

Update: Houston, TX: 80 year old woman stabbed to death outside Walgreens,
suspect killed by Police; 67 prior arrests
A
career criminal who had been arrested nearly 70 times has been identified as the
man who stabbed a woman shortly before being shot to death by a Houston police
officer last weekend. Randy Roszell Lewis, 38, allegedly stabbed an 80-year-old
woman in the chest at a southwest Houston Walgreens shortly before he was shot
and killed by a responding officer. Witnesses said he stabbed her before rifling
through her car. One witness tried to save Rosalie by applying pressure to the
stab wound on her chest. An officer was flagged down at the Walgreens and
confronted Lewis, who police said had a 6-inch blade. When the suspect did not
comply with the officer's commands, the officer shot him twice.

Venice, FL: Stun gun used to disarm suspected Publix shoplifter who stabbed
himself, later died
Police in Venice say they used a stun gun to disarm a suspected shoplifter with
a knife at the Venice Commons Publix. According to investigators, the suspect
died at the hospital. The Venice Police Department says officers were called
around 5 p.m. Monday about a shoplifter at the grocery store who allegedly
threatened employees with a knife. When officers got there, they say a man
started stabbing himself and ignored commands from officers to drop his knife.
VPD says a Taser was deployed "to disarm the suspect so they could render first
aid." The Sarasota County Fire Department took the man to Venice Regional
Bayfront Health, where he died.

San Bernardino, CA: 2 injured in shooting involving theft suspect and security
guard
Two people were sent to the hospital on Sunday night with non-life-threatening
injuries after a shooting in a grocery store parking lot and police are
investigating the incident. The shooting happened at around 9:30 p.m. at a
grocery store on the 4400 block of University Parkway, police said. "When
officers arrived, they found that a shooting had occurred in the parking lot
between an armed security guard and a theft suspect," police said. Officials
said the suspect and another person were transported to a local hospital with
injuries from gunshot wounds. The security guard was not injured in the
shooting.

7-Eleven
Pismo Beach police officers were dispatched to 7-Eleven shortly before 6 a.m.
for a report of a robbery that had just occurred. One of the suspects cornered
the victim behind the register counter as the other suspect stole lottery
tickets and cigarettes, according to Pismo Beach police. Officers say the first
suspect stabbed the victim multiple times, resulting in non-life threatening
injuries.

POS Skimmer Installed on Checkouts at 5 Stop & Shop Supermarkets
The Stop & Shop Supermarkets Co. LLC has told customers that a device that skims
information from payment cards was illegally installed at checkouts in five of
its stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Jersey on various dates ranging
from February to April.
The devices were installed on only one pin pad at each of the affected stores,
and the forensic investigation concluded that the devices were capable of
capturing data from payment card EMV chips, but not from magnetic stripes.
Immediately upon learning of the issue we took steps to secure this checkout
lane and to review video surveillance to determine when the device was
installed. We also notified law enforcement and began working closely with a
third-party forensic investigator to determine what data, if any, it had
captured.
