Black Friday 2020 Results

Foot Traffic Craters as E-Commerce Sales Surge Amid Pandemic

Sensormatic Solutions Releases Black Friday Results
from Shopper Insights Traffic Analytics

- Shopper traffic data indicates that visits to physical stores on Black Friday
decreased by 52.1% compared to 2019

- Retailers closed for Thanksgiving and decreased doorbusters
to help consumers stay safe amid COVID-19 concerns

Johnson Controls, a global leader for smart and sustainable buildings, and the architect of OpenBlue connected solutions, today announced that Sensormatic Solutions, its leading global retail solutions portfolio, released preliminary shopper visit data for U.S. brick-and-mortar retail stores and shopping centers on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday. Findings indicate that shopper visits resulted in a 52.1% decline in traffic on Black Friday, November 27, compared to 2019. Shopper traffic also decreased 45.2% week-to-date (Sunday, November 22 - Friday, November 27) compared to same period last year.

"Due to COVID-19 and social distancing requirements, shoppers were more purposeful in their in-person Black Friday shopping, causing significantly less crowds than we've seen in the past," said Brian Field, senior director of global retail consulting, Sensormatic Solutions. "This was compounded by retailers not offering as many in-store doorbusters and the increasing adoption of e-commerce."

While many retailers limited their Black Friday hours compared to non-pandemic years, the peak time for shopping remained the same, with the busiest influx of footfall at 2 p.m.

Traffic on Thanksgiving Day
Visits to physical stores on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, decreased by 94.9% compared 2019.

"Although traffic on Thanksgiving Day has risen in recent years, we are not surprised to see the departure from this trend in 2020," said Field. "Many well-known retailers elected to close on Thanksgiving this year to prevent crowds in stores and give their hard-working employees more time with their families. Additionally, with Black Friday deals being spread throughout the holiday season, the typical holiday traffic peaks are flattening, with more days sharing importance throughout the season."

The Rest of the Holiday Season
"As we approach Super Saturday, December 19, and corresponding shipping deadlines, we expect to see some of the in-store traffic that didn't materialize on Black Friday appear as consumers wrap up their holiday shopping and make last-minute purchases," said Field.

Sensormatic Solutions expects the 10 busiest days in 2020 to account for 34.2% of all holiday traffic as compared to 46.5% in 2019. sensormatic.com

RetailNext shows Black Friday traffic down by 48%
but Shopper Yield increased an impressive 36.3% over last year
RetailNext Inc., the worldwide expert and market leader in smart store retail analytics for optimizing shopper experiences at brick-and-mortar retail stores, today announced that in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, intent to buy continued to outpace store traffic trends with physical store sales decreasing 29.6% and foot traffic declining 48% over last year.

Black Friday 2020 online shopping surges 22% to record $9 billion, Adobe says
Consumers spent $9 billion on the web the day after Thanksgiving, up 21.6% year over year, according to Adobe, which analyzes website transactions from 80 of the top 100 U.S. online retailers.

This makes Black Friday 2020 the second-largest online spending day in history in the United States, behind Cyber Monday last year, Adobe said.

As many retailers kicked off their holiday sales in October this year, tied to the delayed timing of Amazon's Prime Day event, and put more doorbuster deals online, shoppers had less of a reason to head to stores on Black Friday. People who did venture out were greeted with fewer lines and emptier parking lots than holiday sales events of the past.

On Black Friday, Adobe found consumers spent $6.3 million per minute online, or $27.50 per person, on average. Spending on smartphones surged 25.3% year over year to reach $3.6 billion, representing 40% of total e-commerce spending.

And with retailers from Target to Best Buy to Dick's Sporting Goods encouraging customers to buy online and then safely pick up their orders at stores, the use of curbside pickup on Black Friday increased 52% from a year earlier, Adobe found. cnbc.com

Consumers turn to Amazon and big-box chains that offer one-stop shopping
Heading into the critical season, U.S. consumer spending has been strong despite the economic shocks and shutdowns tied to Covid-19. The National Retail Federation, a trade group, has forecast that holiday sales will increase at least 3.6% to about $755 billion, including at least 20% growth from online shopping to about $202 billion.

This year, web shoppers on Amazon or Best Buy could get many of the same deals that stores once dangled only to those who lined up overnight. Those who did venture out made fewer stops and increasingly turned to big-box chains like Walmart and Target that sell everything from lettuce to Legos, according to the foot-traffic data, shoppers and retail analysts.

The well-worn formula of one-stop shopping has proven especially lucrative during the pandemic. Big-box stores with groceries were deemed essential and allowed to stay open when department stores and malls were closed. Plus, Walmart and Target already offered curbside services in addition to online ordering. wsj.com

Winners and losers of Black Friday 2020
Black Friday 2020 was always going to be different. Masks, socially distanced lines, limited foot traffic in stores - Black Friday this year was different both structurally and visually. Here's a look at the major trends from this year's shopping holiday:

Winner: E-commerce
Winner: Curbs
Winner: Target (and other large retailers)
Loser: Anyone waiting until the last minute to order gifts for delivery
Loser: Store traffic
Loser: Crowds

Some stores had Black Friday crowds, despite CDC warning
Some Americans formed long, crowded lines outside stores this Black Friday, despite the government's warning against indoor shopping. Photos showed people tightly lining up outside Best Buy and GameStop locations early Friday morning, many hoping to score the sold-out PlayStation 5. Lines formed outside other stores, like Walmart and Foot Locker, as well.

Major retailers like Best Buy extended online sales to discourage typical Black Friday crowds, since COVID-19 can spread quickly in large groups. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention classified shopping on or after Thanksgiving as a "high risk" activity due to the recent spike in COVID-19 cases across the country.

Stores and malls across the country had significantly fewer crowds than Black Fridays in prior years, according to photos and reports on the ground. Macy's flagship store in Manhattan, New York City, for instance, had a few shoppers in the morning, a stark contrast to the claustrophobia-inducing crowd on Thanksgiving Day, 2019.

But the CDC warning could not deter all shoppers. Here's what crowded lines looked like on Black Friday 2020: businessinsider.com

'Shipageddon'
Cyber Monday sales could reach record $13 billion,
testing everything retail learned during the pandemic

Cyber Monday will put retail websites and warehouses to their biggest test yet. The industry is bracing for what is likely to be the largest day for digital sales ever recorded in the United States, with spending expected to reach between $10.8 billion and $12.7 billion, according to Adobe Analytics. That would represent growth of 15% to 35% from a year earlier.

Businesses have had months to prepare for this Super Bowl of the e-commerce world. Ever since the pandemic rapidly shifted spending online, companies have been investing in their supply chains to make sure they had stockrooms chock full of the right inventory, and to ensure delivery providers could speedily get packages to doorsteps.

But this holiday season, with online spending already breaking records, new challenges arise. Among them: The Covid-19 pandemic has made it much more difficult for companies to gauge what consumers will be buying, social distancing must be enforced in e-commerce warehouses and delivery providers like UPS and FedEx are in incredibly high demand and shipping costs are rising.

Some in the industry have coined the term "shipageddon," referring to a scenario where shipping capacity becomes totally maxed out. Salesforce said it expects holiday packages being shipped from mid-November through next month will end up exceeding shipping capacity by 5% globally, putting 700 million packages at risk of being delayed. cnbc.com

Human Rights groups protest Amazon over worker pay ahead of Cyber Monday
A coalition of unions, human-rights organizations and environmentalist groups is using the run-up to Cyber Monday to protest the way Amazon treats workers, including warehouse conditions, pay and the company's tactics in its war on unions, a report said.

The move, called "Make Amazon Pay," includes planned strikes and protests at Amazon facilities around the world - and it comes after the company, run by mega-billionaire Jeff Bezos, got ripped for only giving out $10 turkey vouchers to workers and was forced to give larger holiday bonuses, according to Business Insider. nypost.com

'A natural disaster in all 50 states' is unfolding
just as travelers disperse nationwide after Thanksgiving

As millions of Americans head home after Thanksgiving, the coronavirus could be hitching a ride -- threatening to plant seeds of infection across the country as the US on Sunday topped
more than 100,000 new cases for the 27th consecutive day.

A surge of new travel-related infections could overwhelm hospitals already stretched to capacity.
Hospitalizations of Covid-19 patients reached a record high of 93,238 on Sunday, trumping Saturday's record-breaking 91,635 figure, according to the Covid Tracking Project.

"There's no way that the hospitals can be fully prepared for what we're currently facing," emergency medicine physician Dr. Megan Ranney said. "This is like a natural disaster occurring in all 50 states at the same time. There are not adequate beds. There are not adequate staff. And because of the lack of national preparation, there are still not adequate supplies." cnn.com

Birx says Americans who gathered for Thanksgiving
should assume they're infected and get tested

Dr. Deborah Birx, the coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, warned Sunday that Americans who traveled for the Thanksgiving holiday and attended large gatherings should assume they were infected with COVID-19 and get tested within the next few days.

"We know people may have made mistakes over the Thanksgiving time period," Birx said in an interview with "Face the Nation." "If you're young and you gathered, you need to be tested about five to 10 days later. But you need to assume that you're infected and not go near your grandparents and aunts and others without a mask." Birx also said it's crucial to avoid others with comorbidities. cbsnews.com

Fauci says Christmas and New Year's restrictions will be necessary
due to holiday coronavirus wave

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, said on Sunday that the U.S. is heading into a difficult period of the coronavirus pandemic. He said current restrictions and travel advisories will be necessary for the Christmas holiday season. While the CDC warned people against traveling for Thanksgiving,
more than 9 million people traveled in airports running up to and after the holiday. cnbc.com

Walmart, Grocers Can Avoid New Mexico Shutdowns With Covid-19 Testing
New Mexico officials are offering grocery stores, retailers and other essential businesses a way to avoid shutdowns when workers become infected with Covid-19: regularly test all employees.

Supermarkets, big-box retailers and hotels that pay for regular testing and contact tracing of their workers will be exempt from two-week shutdowns the state has imposed on stores with infected employees as cases rise. Under the new agreement,
companies must foot the bill for the measures, test workers every two weeks and share those plans with New Mexico health officials. wsj.com

Restaurant Holdouts Defy Covid-19 Shutdown Orders
Some restaurants and bars are rejecting a new round of shutdown orders, saying that serving customers indoors is their only way to stay in business and that they can do so safely. Restaurants and trade groups have filed lawsuits against the bans and criticized policies that they say have made restaurants scapegoats for Covid-19's spread.
Restaurant operators in Pennsylvania, New York City and Illinois have held rallies calling for dining rooms to stay open.

A September study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention concluded that adults who tested positive for Covid-19 were twice as likely to have reported dining at a restaurant as those who tested negative. Scientists say the new coronavirus is more likely to be transmitted inside where people are in close contact and not wearing masks.

Illinois was the first state to ban indoor dining again this month, followed by Michigan, Washington, Minnesota, Kentucky and most of California. New Mexico and Oregon have eliminated table service altogether. New York City officials have warned they could suspend indoor dining if cases rise further. wsj.com

New York implements emergency hospital measures as Covid cases surge
The New York State Department of Health is implementing emergency hospital measures to help hospitals cope with the surge in Covid cases and hospitalizations as the outbreak grows more severe across the state, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Monday. Cuomo said if some parts of the state hit a "real hospitalization crisis," the state could implement a regional New York Pause, which "is basically a stop." He added that the number one priority is ensuring the state has enough hospital capacity to treat all patients. cnbc.com

Los Angeles orders more restrictions as coronavirus surges
Los Angeles County announced a new stay-home order Friday as coronavirus cases surged out of control in the nation's most populous county,
banning most gatherings but stopping short of a full shutdown on retail stores and other non-essential businesses. The three-week "safer at home" order takes effect Monday. It came as the county of 10 million residents confirmed 24 new deaths and 4,544 new confirmed cases of COVID-19. apnews.com

Why 'Safe Shop' Certification Is Needed

By Frank Beard, director of Safe Shop

Imagine that retailers could obtain a third-party seal of approval if they have the right policies and procedures in place. By displaying this seal of approval on a window, a door, or even in marketing communications, they could signal that their commitment to store safety is recognized by an independent organization.

Consumers don't even have to know the ins and outs of the certification process. Simply observing that third-party approval exists will create an instant point of distinction. The point is that they have it, and their competitors don't. That's a meaningful difference.

For the retailer, this would enable a different conversation about safety. It would also allow them to communicate better with current and prospective employees. Nobody wants to feel as if their workplace will jeopardize their wellbeing, and third-party certification would help them feel better about where they work.

It's for these reasons that I'm thrilled to be part of the newly created Safe Shop certification program.

After much consultation with a diverse board of suppliers, retailers and industry experts, we established a nine-point checklist of safety measures that represent today's table stakes. Some of these are COVID-related, given the realities of the present moment, but the checklist is intended to represent what matters with or without the pandemic.

Retailers who meet these requirements can apply for Safe Shop Assured certification. Once each measure is verified, we work with retailers to integrate Safe Shop in a way that makes sense for their brands. It can be as minimal as a sticker on a window, or as multifaceted as branded floor stickers, sanitizer stations, cleaning checklists and forecourt signage. Everyone has different needs. cstoredecisions.com

FBI posts decline in Black Friday gun checks;
still the fourth-largest one-day total ever

The FBI posted a nearly 8% decline in background checks for Black Friday gun purchases, even as the coronavirus pandemic, volatile social protests and election-year politics have driven a year-long surge in firearm sales. While the 186,645 checks represented a slight drop from 2019, this year's number still marked the fourth-largest one day total on record.

Background checks, required for purchases at federally licensed firearm dealers, are not a measure of actual gun sales, but the National Instant Criminal Background Check System is a way to gauge market demand. The number of firearms sold Friday is likely higher because multiple firearms can be included in one transaction by a single buyer. usatoday.com

Walgreens Employees in California Secure $4.5 Million Wage Deal
A $4.5 million settlement between Walgreens Co. and nearly 2,650 employees in California received preliminary approval from a federal judge in Sacramento, bringing the parties closer to resolving a class action over alleged state wage violations. Participating class members will split $2.83 million under the deal, with each expected to receive an average payment of about $1,210 depending on how many weeks they worked during the relevant period.

Lead plaintiff Lucas Mejia  sued Walgreens in 2018 on behalf of other similarly situated employees under California's Labor Code and Private Attorney Generals Act. He alleged Walgreens rounded down employees' hours on their timecards, required them to undergo off-the-clock security checks before and after their shifts, and failed to pay premium wages for missed meal breaks. bloomberglaw.com

NYC Christmas tree supplier claims Home Depot, Whole Foods

Top digital security worries when it comes to remote employees

26% of remote workers have experienced a cyber attack personally, while 45% of employers have asked their employees to use their personal devices for work since the start of the pandemic, according to a Microsoft research.

The study surveyed 500 employees and 200 business decision makers in September 2020 about remote working, digital security behaviours, and the worries they now face.

Retrofitting cybersecurity
36% of employers admitted they have spent the past few months putting in place the security, privacy, and workplace procedures required for today's remote working world.

Remote workers' information protection concerns
76% of workers were surprised with how well they had adapted to remote working. However, one in five employees feel their data is more vulnerable when working from home due to the absence of regular IT supports.

Employers' security management concerns
One of the most concerning findings is that organizations are potentially
side-stepping their own security procedures in the name of expediency.

Evolving threat
Des Ryan, Solutions Director for Microsoft Ireland, said: "
Cyber hackers are opportunistic, skilled, and relentless. They have become adept at evolving their techniques to increase success rates, whether by experimenting with different phishing lures, adjusting the types of attacks they execute or finding new ways to hide their work."

Cloud-based services and hybrid working
When asked about the future,
58% believe they will have a hybrid workforce in future as more staff work from home more of the time and others are in the office. 57% felt more positive about using cloud-based services, including productivity tools.

Remote priorities: Training, support and investment
However, the research shows that Irish organizations understand there is a gap with
41% admitting they are behind the curve when it comes to having the right digital services and technologies in place to deal with new working realities.  helpnetsecurity.com

Cybersecurity Threats That Could Empty Your Corporate Wallet on Cyber Monday
E-commerce holiday sales are expected to generate between $182 billion and $196 billion this season, a year-over-year increase of 25% to 35%, according to Deloitte's annual forecast. According to the Global Information Security Survey by Ernst and Young,
customer information is the most valuable type of data for most attackers.

The threat to cybersecurity and privacy is increasing: about 6 in 10 organisations (59%) have faced a significant incident in the past 12 months, and 48% of executive boards believe that cyber attacks and data breaches will more than moderately impact their business in the next 12 months.

The rise of online shopping and working from home has created new vectors for attackers, so security professionals need to guard against new threats carefully as they emerge. NordVPN Teams highlights common threats retailers have to watch out for:

But, I've Always Done it That Way

Change is difficult to accept, in business, relationships, strategy and of course...interviewing. Throughout the last 40 years, WZ has been proactive in evolving the standards of interviewing or interrogation techniques starting with introducing the concept of Non-Confrontational approaches many years ago. Although we have continued to evolve over these few decades, there is no more important time to challenge the status quo, than the present. All investigative professionals should be constantly challenging their practice and asking themselves "how do I know what I know?". There is a difference between defining success based off of results versus based on the informed strategic process that drove the results. Truth be told, this is a challenge for all professions - including ours.

Black Friday & Cyber Monday on Track to be Biggest Online Sales Days Ever
Black Friday 2020 online sales on pace to grow as much as 42%
Early data from Adobe Analytics forecasts Black Friday online sales to hit between $8.9 billion and $10.6 billion, which represents growth of 20% to 42% year over year.

The data firm expects Black Friday and Cyber Monday to become the two largest online sales days in history as consumers shift more spending toward e-commerce amid the COVID-19 pandemic. By Friday morning, Salesforce projected online sales in the U.S. for Black Friday to spike 15% to $11.9 billion.

According to Adobe, Thanksgiving sales hit a record $5.1 billion, up 21.5% over 2019. Although that represents a new high, "it didn't come with the kind of aggressive growth rate we've seen with the start of the pandemic," Taylor Schreiner, director of Adobe Digital Insights, said in a statement. retaildive.com

Online Shopping Drives Surge in Counterfeit Purchases
'Tis the Season for Online Counterfeits
Purchasing counterfeit products is both frustrating and dangerous.
This year's Black Friday could drive a surge in purchases from the "gray market."

To help consumers -- and perhaps give e-tailers a heads up about better e-commerce security -- the E-Commerce Times discussed holiday shopping issues with a panel of cybersecurity experts. They offered advice on how consumers can avoid buying counterfeit products; and analyses of how fake goods affect the broader retail market.

Knockoffs Bad for Good Businesses
"For the broader retail market, counterfeiting can have a major impact on sales,
taking away purchases during a time when most retailers typically see their biggest revenue boost," he explained.

Counterfeits Harmful to Health
Sometimes these fake products are simply expired and therefore no longer effective. However, oftentimes these
counterfeit goods can contain dangerous ingredients like animal excrement, bacteria, carcinogens, wood or industrial alcohol and sub-standard watered-down ingredients, and high levels of aluminum, he added.

Crooks Prey on Emotions
Pendergast offered a quick cybersecurity checklist to give digital shoppers a fighting chance this season to stay safer online. His three tips involve common sense regarding
shipping, passwords, and fraud protection services.

Buyer Be Aware
"It is hard to remember every password, so I would

Organized Retail Theft suspect with 49ers tattoo accused of striking up and down West Coast
The San Francisco 49ers tattoo that convicted felon, Tyrone Dixon, is sporting on his left arm may help you spot him. He's wanted in King County for 1ST Degree Organized Retail Theft. He's accused of stealing jewelry cases from Kohl's department stores up and down the West Coast. Detectives say he heisted more than $25,000 worth of jewelry from the Kohl's in Covington last year, hitting the same store twice within days and being recognized by the store's corporate security team as the same suspect who stole jewelry cases from a Kohl's in California. "He would clip that cable that secures the jewelry display cases to the countertop. To most customers he just looked like an empty- handed shopper until he flees the store with an armload of stolen merchandise valued in the thousands," said King County Sheriff's Sgt. Tim Meyer. He's also wanted in Olympia, Tukwila, Renton and Thurston County. q13fox.com

Miami-Dade FL: Thief steals over $14K in jewelry from unlocked car at gas station
Tens of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and cash was stolen from the unlocked car of a jeweler while parked at a Northwest Miami-Dade gas station. Soon after, the crook, who was wearing a mask and gloves, opens the victim's door and burglarizes the vehicle.

About $14,000 in merchandise, including a diamond Cartier watch and Louis Vuitton bag, and cash were taken from the passenger's seat. "I noticed the bag's not there," the victim said. "I placed it in the bag, in the bottom. 'Maybe it's dark?' I can't find it." The jeweler said he was purchasing lottery tickets before he was to deliver the watch to a client. Success can not happen without conflict. Because success always challenges the status quo, regardless, and mandates change. And in order for change to be successful you need commitment - you need everyone to buy in totally. It's not good enough for everyone to merely agree and move forward because they'll be those that merely go thru the motions and don't believe. One can disagree and still commit but for those who don't engage - commitment is a mere phrase not reinforced by actions.

Just a Thought,
Gus
