Has Facial Recognition Won The Race For Biometric Authentication?

COVID-19 has driven demand for contactless biometrics - namely facial recognition

Fingerprint identification had once been the most widespread biometric technology around the world. However, many argue that this technology has quite a lot of shortcomings. For instance, even expensive fingerprint reading scanners have a hard time identifying dirty or wet fingers, plus, some people's fingerprints are unreadable. Furthermore, being vulnerable to the temperature and precipitation, such scanners consequently cannot be used outdoors. Plus, fingerprint reading scanners do not meet today's demand for contactless biometric technology.

According to a new comprehensive report 'Global Contactless Biometrics Technology Market 2020-2026', "the Global Contactless Biometrics Technology Market size is expected to reach $18.6 billion by 2026, rising at a market growth of 19.1% CAGR during the forecast period. The development and acceptance of contactless biometric technologies have been driven by demand for faster and easier authentication processes and boosted by demand generated by the COVID-19 pandemic."

Thus, it is contactless biometric recognition technologies that meet the latest requirements.

Too expensive?
Until quite recently, face recognition technology was too expensive and poorly scalable. Nevertheless, a lot of factors have changed in recent years. To start with, facial biometric technologies have become more accessible for a large audience. Being affordable, reliable, and easy to use, facial recognition systems provide a high level of security. Furthermore, the facial recognition system allows you to instantly notify about facial identification cases.

Impact of COVID-19
The contactless facial recognition system is especially relevant today due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, wearing a mask is required almost in all public places. That is why those systems aimed at people's safety monitoring had to promptly develop their solutions according to the new requirements. Developers of facial biometric solutions have encountered an issue of face detection in masks. It was essential to adapt the software to such changes, more specifically update the face recognition algorithm.

Global transformation
As a matter of fact, facial recognition algorithm has evolved around the world. According to the tests conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the top face identification algorithm of 2020 has an error rate of 0.08% compared to 4.1% for the best algorithm in 2014. Such improvements will reduce risks linked to misidentification, and expand the advantages that can come from proper use in the long run. Read More Here

Businesses paying up to protect workspaces amid potential unrest
Business owners and operators in some parts of the nation are paying big bucks to hire private security to guard their buildings and offices in the event of any potential unrest following Election Day, experts and officials said Tuesday.

Former federal law enforcement officer David Katz, who now owns a New York-based security firm, said clients have recently sought advice for how they should prepare for any potential riots or looting that could break out as results from the 2020 Presidential Election trickle out.

"I said physical security is first. Board up," Katz, founder and CEO of Global Security Group, Inc., told Fox News on Tuesday. "And understand that you're going to be facing people who will bring tools to this party. No nails, screws ... something very substantial there."

New York City businesses from Macy's flagship store in Herald Square to high-end shops in Manhattan's chic SoHo neighborhood have already covered their windows.

Katz said the cost of hiring private security to stand guard outside businesses and buildings could reach up to $2,500 to $3,000 per hour, depending on size and scope of the job. Most guards, many of whom are retired law enforcement, might typically be paid $30 to $40 per hour for an assignment, but given the circumstances could instead be paid as much as $60 an hour, Katz said. In turn, he said would have to bill nearly $100 per hour, per guard, just to turn a profit. foxnews.com

Denver: 2 private security companies cited for licensing violation
in connection to security guard shooting at protest

Two companies that worked to assign an unlicensed security guard to work for a Denver news station at a protest, where the guard was involved in a fatal shooting, have been cited. Police detectives with the Denver Department of Excise and Licenses cited Pinkerton and Isborn Security with a municipal code violation for employing or directing an unlicensed security guard.

The two companies are accused of arranging for Matthew Dolloff, 30, to provide private security services for 9News during a protest on Oct. 10. Dolloff was not licensed to do so as required by the City and County of Denver. During the protest, Dolloff got into an alleged altercation with 49-year-old Lee Keltner near Denver's Civic Center Park. During the incident, Dolloff allegedly pulled a gun and shot Keltner. Keltner was pronounced dead at Denver Health Medical Center. thedenverchannel.com

Chicago's Looting Task Force
Inside CPD's Efforts To Find The Looters From This Summer's Mayhem

In a high-tech command center on the second floor of the Area 2 police headquarters, Chicago police detectives are involved in a needle-in-a-haystack effort to identify thousands of people responsible for looting hundreds of stores in the downtown area.

The assault on Michigan Avenue and other commercial areas on the Near North Side unfolded in the early morning hours Aug. 10, after erroneous reports of a juvenile being shot by Chicago police. By the time the mayhem ended, hundreds of businesses had been vandalized and looted, and over a dozen police officers were injured. And that incident followed a similar outbreak of violence following the shooting of George Floyd in Minneapolis last May.

Within 24 hours of the August attacks on the downtown area, the city set up the Looting Task Force to put names to the faces in the crowd. It isn't easy. For the last two months, detectives assigned to the task force have been gathering hundreds of surveillance videos from store owners, matching those up with city cameras in an effort to capture usable images of the perpetrators, and track their movements from store to store.

So far, 87 individuals have been charged, most of them on felony looting and burglary counts. But detectives concede that thousands more are out there to be found. nbcchicago.com

Looting Caravan Hits Bay Area
Marauding Groups of Looters Target Multiple Retail Stores Across the East Bay

A memo seems to have gone out to would-be looters that this week was going to be a good time to hit some stores in the East Bay. But unlike some looting and vandalism that occurred around the time of weeks-long unrest around the country over the killing of George Floyd in late May, this week's activities seem to be just wanton smash-and-grabs with no protests attached.

Things started with a looting caravan that smashed windows and ransacked a Starbucks in the Fruitvale on Tuesday night. As the Mercury News reports, Oakland police were chasing many reports of looting around the city on Tuesday - and at one point they found a group of 50 people attempting to break into a building in West Oakland.

On Wednesday night, a caravan of looters descended on a CVS store in Emeryville, and similarly ransacked the place, with most of the suspects fleeing the scene. Also on Wednesday night, Alameda County Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene of a Big 5 store in San Lorenzo where a group of 20 attempted looters were allegedly trying to break in and get to the gun section. As ABC 7 reports, "weapons and ammunition [were] scattered across the ground right outside the store," and across the street, deputies said they saw around 50 people running out of a Walmart store as well. sfist.com

U.S. coronavirus cases climb by record for second day in a row, up over 120,000
Coronavirus cases in the United States surged by at least 120,276 on Thursday, according to a Reuters tally, the second consecutive daily record rise as the outbreak spreads in every region.

U.S. cases have risen by over 100,000 for three out of the last seven days, putting pressure on hospitals in several states and causing families to rethink their plans for Thanksgiving dinner on Nov. 26.

Twenty out of 50 states reporting record one-day increases on Thursday. Previously, the most states that reported records for new cases in a single day was 16 on Oct. 30, according to Reuters data. While the spread of the virus is wide, the outbreak is hitting the Midwest particularly hard, based on daily new cases per capita.

Some cities and states have announced new measures such as curfews or reduced gathering sizes to combat the spread of the virus, but the United States has taken no action at the federal level. Seventeen out of 50 states do not require masks.

Many countries in Europe are shutting high-risk businesses and even ordering national or regional lockdowns in the face of a second wave of the virus. reuters.com

Trader Joe's - 1,250 COVID Cases & 2 COVID Deaths
Trader Joe's Shares Information on Covid-19 Safety Practices and Positive Cases
"While we do not know the specific details of other grocers, we believe it is important to our crew members and customers to share and understand what has happened in our stores from the beginning of the pandemic through October 31, 2020," Trader Joe's stated in a release.

Out of Trader Joe's 514 stores, 24% have had zero positive COVID-19 cases reported among store members. And 83% of stores have had zero to four cases.

The company said it has had a total of 1,250 positive cases reported during the past eight months. Out of 53,000 store members, this is a rate of approximately 2.4%.

Of the workers who tested positive and completed a quarantine period, 95% have recovered and chosen to return to work. There have been two deaths in which COVID-19 was suspected to be a contributing factor.

Trader Joe's noted that it has developed, and continues to develop, procedures that meet or exceed CDC guidelines to safeguard the health and safety of its workers and customers (details are available at www.traderjoes.com).

"The health and safety practices and procedures that have been put in place, and that continually evolve, have been effective because of the great work done by our crew members in every store, every day, said Jon Basalone, president of stores. "We appreciate our crew members' diligence and our customers' patience as we work each day to make our stores safe for everyone." prnewswire.com

Will store certifications make customers feel safer?
New Safe Shop Program Offers Consumers 'Certified-Safe Retail'

With stores open but concerns remaining about contracting the novel coronavirus, customers are seeking assurance that retailers are taking safety seriously. An industry group hopes to give them that assurance with a new certification for retailers.

The Safe Shop Assured certification program is being informed by a board of retailers, suppliers and retail experts and is meant to establish best practices for store safety and sanitation, allowing retailers to demonstrate their adherence to them, according to CStore Decisions.

To earn the certification, retailers will have to demonstrate that they have fulfilled a checklist of safety standards and be confirmed by an independent third party. Upon receiving the certification they will be able to display Safe Shop signage, graphics and protective equipment as they see fit.

The program is a response to the confusion both U.S. retailers and customers have experienced during the pandemic regarding appropriate safety measures and precautions. The lack of comprehensive federal guidelines in the U.S. for the management of in-store safety during the pandemic has left it to individual states, municipalities and retailers to determine the best course of action for protecting employees and customers. retailwire.com

Light at the end of the lockdown tunnel
Don't Ignore the Good News On Covid-19 From Asia

The strategies pursued by South Korea, Vietnam, China and others do still seem to be paying off. While the total Covid-19 death toll is between 500-700 per million people in France, the U.K., Spain and the U.S., in China and South Korea it is below 10 per million. Cases are a less perfect measure, but there's a similar observable gap. Wuhan, once the epicenter of Covid-19, is welcoming tourists again.

The perception of an Asian advantage in this pandemic often falls prey to essentialist thinking: That somehow the East is doing things the West could never do, and that it's largely down to profound differences in values, politics and culture.

There are likely far less intangible forces at work. If the key to avoiding more lockdowns is finding a way to "live with the virus" - through widespread testing, tracing of contacts and isolating positive cases to slow transmission - Western countries have made structural, not cultural, errors. bloomberg.com

It's Beginning to Look Like a Very Early Holiday Season, Everywhere You Go

by Tony D'Onofrio, Global Retail Influencer

With COVID-19 severely impacting retail across the globe, of great interest has been the continuing research and predictions of the 2020 holiday shopping season. For the world's two largest economies, China and the United States, the good news is that after very steep drops at the start of the pandemic, retail sales have already recovered to 2019 pre-pandemic levels.

How are retailers entering the holiday season? What is the latest consumer sentiment? Who will win the season based on the latest forecasts?

The Sectors Leading the Holiday Season

2020 data through August highlights the key sectors entering the holiday season from a position of strength. In that timeframe, non-store, grocery, and DIY are the only segments delivering solid results that are above the retail average of 5.3%.

Highly challenged are clothing and accessories which enter the holiday season at negative 35%. Forty-seven percent of consumers state they will do all or most of their shopping online. 23% say they will shift more of their spending to curbside or pickup in-store versus last year. 52% have not been to a mall or department stores since the start of the pandemic. Election delays hinder store traffic and online sales as holidays launch
Potential unrest isn't the only challenge for retailers right now, as the election deters shopping more broadly. Store traffic could fall 35% to 50% this election week, which began Nov. 1, especially with delayed poll results, according to a Tuesday note from Morgan Stanley analyst Kimberly Greenberger. The unpredictability itself muddies the forecast, but she noted that in 2012, election week traffic fell 4.4 points month over month and 8% year over year, and in 2016, traffic was down 1.9 points month over month and 7.6% year over year.

The impact extends online as well, with Adobe warning that, if past patterns hold, Wednesday's online retail sales could drop by $300 million to below $2 billion; the firm is forecasting $16 billion in online spending during election week (Nov. 1-7).

The firm also found that 26% of U.S. consumers said the election's outcome would impact their holiday spending, with 63% of retailers believing that consumers will be more confident after the presidential election. retaildive.com

Customers Demanding Omnichannel Options
Survey: Return policies and home delivery services influence purchase decisions

According to an October 2020 consumer survey from Pitney Bowes, more than half of respondents (54%) say they are unlikely to purchase a product they want if the retailer has a poor or unclear return policy. Almost four in 10 (40%) respondents are holding back from making purchases where in-person drop-off is the only returns option offered, and 43% find in-person returns to be a negative or annoying experience compared to home pickup.

Additionally, while many retailers have expanded curbside pickup offerings in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, 67% of respondents still feel home delivery is more convenient. Almost one-quarter of respondents (23%) consumers feel like they're being put to work in the curbside pickup process, with 40% (including about half of millennials) saying they should get a discount for using curbside pickup. chainstoreage.com

New Jersey bans plastic and paper bags in one of nation's most stringent laws
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has signed a law prohibiting N.J. retailers and other businesses from handing out single-use paper and plastic bags, single-use plastic carryout bags and polystyrene foam containers. The law, which is being called one of the toughest of its kind in the country, goes into effect in May 2022.

In addition, food-service businesses will no longer be able to hand out plastic straws, unless requested by a customer, starting in November 2021. The bans apply to a variety of businesses, including restaurants, convenience stores, food trucks, movie theaters and grocery stores that are 2,500 sq. ft. or larger. chainstoreage.com

Auror Investigate: Why we built it for retail investigators

By Tom Batterbury, Co-CEO & Co-Founder at Auror,
the Retail Crime Intelligence Platform working with retailers
around the world.

Two years ago, I was sitting in the 'war room' at one of our retail partners, watching them piece together an Organized Retail Crime (ORC) investigation. Over the last 12 months, they had developed their methodology and it was delivering exceptional results, in fact, their ORC program was delivering an ROI of 800%. But I still felt our platform could support them better, and help them drive more outcomes in less time. Why?

Like many retailers, they would have printouts and surveillance images of the boosters and fencing operations they were uncovering in their war room. They would have a to-do-list on the whiteboard. They would have numerous documents piecing together the investigation narrative to present to their law enforcement partners. This involved lots of back and forth, along with a lot of documentation updates. I felt this was an opportunity to build purpose built software to support retail AP/LP investigations including but not limited to ORC.

We made the decision to invest in building something ground breaking. To do what we do best, and challenge the status quo by taking a new approach to how a system should work for our retail partners. We call it Auror Investigate.

Paying a ransom to prevent leaking of stolen data is a risky gamble
Ransomware groups have realized that their tactics are very effective for targeting larger enterprises, and this resulted in a 31% increase of the average ransom payment in Q3 2020 (reaching $233,817), ransomware IR provider Coveware shared in a recently released report.

They also warned that cases where the attackers exfiltrated data and asked for an additional ransom to delete it have doubled in the same period, but that paying up is a definite gamble.

"Despite some companies opting to pay threat actors to not release exfiltrated data, Coveware has seen a fraying of promises of the cybercriminals (if that is a thing) to delete the data," they noted.

The data cannot be credibly deleted, it's not secured and is often shared with other parties, they said. Various ransomware groups have posted the stolen data online despite having been paid to not release it or have demanded another payment at a later date. helpnetsecurity.com

The One Critical Element to Hardening Your Employees' Mobile Security
COVID-19 has exposed longstanding gaps in enterprise mobile security. Creating a comprehensive mobile security plan and mandating compliance with that plan are essential to closing them.

American businesses have learned the hard way that they should be paying more attention to hardening their employees' mobile devices. There has been a drastic increase in the amount of malware, phishing, network breaches, and cyberattacks in general since the COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020, and many of them were related to the large number of employees working remotely. darkreading.com

Pandemic Ushering in New Era of Digital Work
Work from anywhere: Is 2021 the future of work?
As head of the digital whiteboarding platform Miro, which has doubled its user base from 3.7M to 9M since March and is now used by 95% of Fortune 100 companies, CEO Audrey Khusid has a front row seat to the evolution of the changing workplace. Based on his observations from 2020, he predicts that work from home will become work from anywhere (WFX), and there will be a massive digital transformation as a result.

What else will change? Here are his six most poignant predictions for 2021:

Advertisement1. Work from home will become work from anywhere (WFX)
More and more companies are announcing that remote work will be permanent, even when travel restrictions and social distancing will not be. The result: As travel opportunities begin to reopen, millions of employees will turn their new-found remote status into the chance to work from anywhere, relocating outside of urban centers, making up for lost time with family, or participating in remote years and other "workation" opportunities. And because companies have spent the last year investing in technology that enables virtual collaboration - for many of these employees the transition will be seamless and unnoticed by employers.

2. Hybrid work will present new challenges to unequipped teams
Thousands of enterprises will gradually begin phasing teams back into the office by adopting hybrid strategies that combine remote and in-office work. While Hybrid work is a good compromise to protect employees with health concerns, the risk becomes introducing "worst of both worlds" work habits into company collaboration. To mitigate these effects, enterprises can embrace a culture of
asynchronous sharing to replace many of the status and other routine meetings that fill up employee calendars. For brainstorms and real-time meetings, companies must make meetings interactive so that virtual attendees can participate with just as little friction as in-person ones, and craft collaborative practices that are inclusive to remote workers, like holding meetings entirely virtually even if some members are in the office.

3. The heartland will see an "undraining" of brains

4. Engagement is the new productivity

5. In the new world of work from anywhere (WFX), employees must amplify their engagement to find advancement opportunities

6. Young careers may suffer from lack of organic mentorship opportunities

Can virtual working move beyond clumsy Zoom calls?
Caught Zoom fatigue yet? New research predicts advanced technologies and 5G will add options for a full range of sensorial experiences to help companies reimagine the virtual working experience.

The study, "The Dematerialized Office" from Ericsson, based on a July survey of nearly 8,000 white collar workers globally, sees the pandemic as a tipping point for digitized work communications. Six in 10 respondents foresee a permanent increase in online meetings with customers, suppliers and colleagues, necessitating a need for greater tools to support remote interaction. Other drivers include possible sustainability benefits and interest in communicating at a higher level.

Not unsurprisingly, one prediction was that augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technology would "enable the experience of collaborating in the same room with colleagues" without physically leaving home. retailwire.com

4 Types of eCommerce Fraud That Have Increased During the Pandemic
As the
fraudsters become smarter and more adept at defeating the traditional methods of fraud prevention, detecting subtle tells and behavioral analysis have emerged as effective ways to protect both consumers and merchants from unwanted access and transactions. As a merchant, look for holes in your anti-fraud stack and realize that the fraudsters will always evolve. If your fraud prevention technology remains stale, you are inviting chargebacks.

Bots
The dark web is filled with easily obtained lists of usernames and passwords, and fraudsters are able to purchase large quantities of such combinations for relatively little money. These credentials are then loaded into a server and used to ping eCommerce and other sites in an attempt to find a combination that works. It's essentially the fraudster's version of playing a slot machine, hoping for the jackpot winning combination of username and password.

Account Takeover
Once a fraudster gains access, taking over an account is simple. In a typical account takeover (ATO) scenario, the fraudster will change subtle pieces of information associated with the account, such as phone numbers, emails, and addresses. The fraudster now "owns" your account and can transact, purchasing goods for their own use or for the purposes of selling them.

Fake Accounts
Fraudsters will visit a site or app and create a new user profile, using components that are stolen in combination with their own information, such as burner phones and fake email addresses.

Transaction Payment Fraud
The result of all three attack vectors is almost always a chargeback. The real consumer has realized that their account has been compromised and that transactions have been made with their payment method without their knowledge or consent. securitytoday.com

Amazon to double company's Black leadership over next two years
FOX Business has learned that Amazon is planning to double the number of Black leaders in its senior ranks as the company ends the year and heads into 2021. The electronic commerce giant said that the effort "includes working to double the representation of Black Vice Presidents and Directors in 2020 and again in 2021" and making "increased investments and programming designed to grow Black leaders from within."

The move follows repeated calls from its employees to proactively address racial bias and discrimination at the company. As of the end of last year, over 80% of Amazon's managerial roles around the world were held by either white or Asian people, while Black people accounted for just 8.3% of those positions, according to company data. Overall, Black employees made up roughly 26.5% of Amazon's entire workforce in 2019. foxbusiness.com

Update: Tampa's Gift Card King Gets 5 Years for Money Laundering,
Loses Escalade, $690,000
U.S. District Judge Mary S. Scriven has sentenced Stephen H. McIntyre (51, Tampa) to five years and three months in federal prison for conspiring to commit money laundering. The court also ordered McIntyre to forfeit more than $690,000, a 2014 Cadillac Escalade, and other funds that are traceable to the proceeds of the money laundering conspiracy. McIntyre had pleaded guilty on January 21, 2020. According to court documents, from March 2014 through February 2019, McIntyre operated SHM Gulf Enterprises, LLC, doing business as Tampa Gift Card King ("GCK"). Located in Tampa, GCK was a secondhand dealer where individuals sold their unused, or partially used, returned merchandise cards and retail gift cards, some of which were procured via theft or fraud, for a percentage of the cards' face value in exchange for cash. Thereafter, McIntyre and his co-conspirators resold the returned merchandise cards and gift cards even though they knew some of the cards had been obtained via theft or fraud. McIntyre and his co-conspirators also conducted other illicit transactions involving the cards and used the proceeds for their personal enrichment.  shorenewsnetwork.com
