The
International Organization of Black
Security Executives (IOBSE) was founded in 1982 by Black Security Executives
concerned about the relatively small number of minority professionals, and the
role black security professionals could have in helping young people. Over the
years a number of key retail Loss Prevention executives have played an
instrumental role in building their conference and their mission of helping
young black students across America who are entering the security and loss
prevention industry.
Some of the previous IOBSE presidents
As one of the early leaders of the IOBSE, Marvin Ellison, a
long-term veteran of retail Loss Prevention - and clearly the most successful LP
executive in history - was their Keynote Speaker at the 2015 conference. And
ladies and gentlemen, the fact that Marvin Ellison, one of the busiest
executives in the retail industry, takes the time to do this and shows his
continued commitment to not just the IOBSE but also to the young people entering
this industry is evidence enough of this organization's unwavering commitment to
developing the leaders of tomorrow.

Industry giant adapts and innovates in
challenging marketplace
Supermarket
News has selected Albertsons Cos., the nation's second-largest supermarket
operator, as its Retailer of the Year for 2020.
The past year has seen Albertsons successfully go public, spur growth and
innovation in strategic areas such as e-commerce and private brands, and refresh
its store base, among other initiatives. The result: improved customer loyalty,

workers to be designated as emergency first responders during the crisis.
"There have been an unprecedented series of events this year that have
impacted all of us, and certainly the grocery industry," said Michael Browne,
executive editor of Supermarket News. "But heading into 2020 and through the
turbulent year so far, Albertsons has stayed the course with its sales momentum;
its immediate strong response to COVID-19; its efforts to promote
diversity, equality and inclusion; its technology and branding advances; and

101 Wendy's Franchisee Whistleblower Says CEO Used $1M PPP Loans to Buy New Home
The
CEO of a large Wendy's franchisee diverted $1 million in Paycheck Protection
Program loans meant to keep workers employed to buy a new house, according to a
new lawsuit.
Andrew Levy, the CEO of the Starboard Group, which operates 101 Wendy's
locations, instructed former employee Sandi Adler to list some of his personal
employees as corporate employees to pull off the scheme, Adler alleges in a new
whistleblower suit filed in Florida, CNBC reported.
Starboard in total received $9 million in total through the federal relief
program created to aid ailing businesses during the coronavirus pandemic. The
franchisee oversees 3,200 employees at locations in seven states.
But a million of that relief went to finance Levy's new home in Montana,
according to Adler, a former vice president at the company.

Family Sues Nike for Alleged Racial Profiling in Santa Monica Incident
A
Black family that alleges they were racially profiled and wrongly accused of
shoplifting by a manager at Nike's Santa Monica store filed a federal civil
rights lawsuit Saturday against the athletic apparel company and the former
employee.
Joel Stallworth and wife TaMiya Dickerson contend they were accused by white
store manager Wendy Magee of stealing a $12 child's basketball on July 5, 2019,
from the Nike store on the Third Street Promenade. Dickerson posted a video on
Facebook shortly afterward, showing their infant son Samuel holding the ball in
the store. It also shows a copy of the receipt from their purchase of the ball.
A message to Nike seeking comment was not immediately answered, but after the
video went viral last year, Nike said in a statement that it had reached out to
the couple to "express our deepest apologies."
Stallworth and Dickerson argue that "Nike's clever marketing, [which is]
intended to profit from Black America's desire for equal treatment can only go
so far to cover up the reality that is Nike's problematic culture" that
ranges from "its all-white executive leadership ... to Nike's failure to address
[this] particular [store] manager's history of racist behavior."
Magee, the store manager, was fired, and subsequently filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against
the company, according to the family's complaint.

1,350 attacks having been reported by mid-June.
Recent examples have seen shopworkers spat at and threatened with being 'given

which has seen its second reading in Parliament postponed. The bill states that
because shop workers have responsibilities to uphold the law on age-restricted

Temperature Screening
HERNDON, Va., (July 9, 2020)
-
Prosegur USA, a global
leader in security technology, announced that it has increased the supply of
high-quality FLIR thermal cameras that can be used for contactless body
temperature screening. The company also reaffirmed its commitment to helping its

"FLIR cameras are some of the most advanced thermal imaging solutions available
on the market, which offer quick and accurate temperature measurement from a
safe distance," said
David Crow, Prosegur USA's senior vice president of

temperature of people entering, but they are ONVIF-compliant, meaning they can
easily be integrated into most of the popular video management systems (VMS) for
remote access and monitoring."
"Thermal video technology can a very helpful part of your overall temperature
screening efforts, but it is extremely important to use it according to
the
guidelines set by the FDA, which includes having a secondary verification," said
Mike Dunn, Prosegur USA's chief technology officer.
"Companies that don't, risk
not only fines but also inaccurate temperature readings which can lead to people
with fever being allowed to enter premises. For us at Prosegur USA, the number
one priority when deploying these cameras is to ensure our customers get
accurate readings from a quality solution, and also to help our customers with
training materials for their employees on the proper use of the system."

The Longer it Goes Big Brother Has to Be There
Employee Surveillance: Who's the Boss(ware)?
Pandemic Drives Increased Adoption of
Workplace Monitoring Tools
With so many more employees now having to work from home during the COVID-19
pandemic, numerous organizations have been exploring the use of
employee-monitoring tools.
Proponents say such tools can help companies manage remote teams, maximize
billable hours and spot idle workers - for example, salespeople who are failing
to contact or visit prospects. Such tools may also help enforce security
policies to better prevent home workers from getting hacked and corporate data
being exposed.
Many different types of software may include monitoring capabilities. But
looking specifically at the time-tracking and productivity monitoring space, big
players include Hubstaff, Sapience and WorkSmart. Others named in a recent
PC Magazine roundup include ActivTrak, DeskTime Pro, Hubstaff, InterGuard,
StaffCop Enterprise, Teramind, Time Doctor, Veriato, VeriClock and Work
Examiner.
From Light Touch to Big Brother
In the early days of COVID-19 lockdowns, many organizations chose a path of
great leniency, especially as workers were struggling to juggle working from
home, childcare, home-schooling and more, he says. "But I think that give and
take has to be reduced eventually, particularly because ... gangs are
looking out for devices that haven't hit the network, so haven't been patched
for three months. ... We know that they're looking for vulnerabilities in home
Wi-Fi connections. So every organization has to review their risks against that
new risk matrix."

• The current status of CCPA enforcement and

Office 365 A "Gold Mine of Information," For APT Actors
How Advanced Attackers Take Aim at Office 365
Researchers discuss how adversaries use components of Office 365 that are
poorly understood and not closely monitored.
Microsoft Office 365 is quickly becoming the most common business email
platform and a hot target for cybercriminals following their enterprise
victims to the cloud. The size, complexity, and data stores in Office 365 make
it an appealing and often easy target for advanced actors.
Since he started working at Mandiant more than four years ago, manager Josh
Madeley has seen attackers use Office 365 in ways he never previously considered
while handling large intrusion investigations. As more companies adopted the
platform, advanced persistent threat (APT) groups started to use tactics nobody
had discussed let alone developed investigative methodology for, he says.
The past year alone has seen multiple cases in which APT actors have realized
Office 365 is a "gold mine of information," adds Doug Bienstock, principal
consultant at Mandiant. His work in red teaming and incident response has led
Bienstock down the path of investigating the Office 365 platform from an
attacker's perspective. They're becoming experts in it, he says.
Advanced attackers seek long-term, persistent access and will use techniques
that enable them to keep access to a mailbox for a period of months or years.
"It's really a huge treasure trove of information," Bienstock says. "Especially
in the last six months with COVID, it's what a lot of organizations are
dependent on to work together."

Number of Stolen & Exposed Credentials Up 300% from 2018
From Exposure to Takeover: The 15B stolen credentials allowing account takeover
Digital Shadows
reveals new research assessing how cybercriminals exploit stolen credentials
for accounts that we use every day, including bank accounts, social media and
video streaming services. The study, entitled
From Exposure to Takeover finds there are more than 15 billion
credentials in circulation in cybercriminal marketplaces, many on the dark web -
the equivalent of more than two for every person on the planet
The research finds that access to organizations' key systems trade at a
significant premium. Usernames with "invoice" or "invoices" were by far the most
common advertised and comprise 66 percent of the 2 million usernames assessed. "Partners" and
"payments" came in a distant second and third place, both with 10
percent each. Dozens of advertisements for domain admin access are also
advertised and in many cases are being auctioned to the highest bidder with
prices ranging from $500 to $120,000 - with an average $3,139. Digital Shadows

Kazakh Hacker Charged For Selling Access To 300 Companies And Causing Tens Of
Millions In Damage
A Kazakhstan-based hacker who sold access to hundreds of companies across the
globe has been charged by U.S. authorities. The indictment landed just weeks
after the defendant's identity was revealed earlier this month by cybersecurity
researchers, as
first revealed by Forbes.
The hacker who went by the nickname "fxmsp" was unmasked by cybersecurity firm
Group-IB as Kazakh national Andrey Turchin, though it underestimated the
defendant's sprawling illicit sales network, according to a Justice Department
indictment. The DOJ's charges, unsealed on Tuesday, were first filed under
seal back in December 2018 and claimed that he and unnamed co-conspirators were
responsible for selling access to networks of as many as 300 companies,
more than double the 130 figure cited by Group-IB. Once on networks, criminals
could do what they wanted, whether that was steal data or pilfer computing power
for cryptocurrency mining.

Second Wave of Cannabis Robberies?
Dispensaries Say Law Enforcement is Failing to Protect Them as Burglaries Rise
Law
enforcement's failure to protect cannabis businesses-even after they'd been
burglarized once, twice, or, in the case of at least one San Francisco
dispensary, BASA, four times-is shaking faith in marijuana legalization as a
social experiment. Cannabis businesses pay possibly the highest taxes of any
merchants in California. With state and local sales taxes as well as cultivation
and excise taxes, the tax bill for legal weed in some cities exceeds 40
percent-a steep cost of doing business that, some merchants say, still doesn't
earn legal cannabis any state protection.
And now, rumors of a second wave of dispensary robberies during the holiday
weekend-and significant doubts that police will be able (or willing) to
respond-are leading cannabis entrepreneurs to prepare defend their businesses
by themselves. This in in turn is casting doubt on the value, and the
long-term viability, of legalization.

Cannabis Firms See Jump in Insurance Costs to Protect Leaders as Investors Sue
Canadian and U.S. cannabis companies are facing a spike in already high costs of
insurance to protect top executives from personal liability, following a slew of
lawsuits by disgruntled investors alleging fraud and misinformation, with
more such action expected.
Some of the biggest cannabis companies, including Medmen Enterprises, Canopy
Growth, CannTrust Holdings, Aphria Inc and Columbia Care, have faced
shareholder litigation, accusing leaders of false claims, failing to act in the
interest of all shareholders and attempts to defraud investors.
The lawsuits are yet another sign of souring sentiment against an industry that
has failed to deliver on promises of boundless growth. And the rising costs
are another headwind for companies already shuttering operations and cutting
jobs due to slower-than-expected demand.

The Marijuana Superweapon Biden Refuses to Use
Legalizing marijuana is extremely popular.
So why won't Joe Biden embrace the idea?
Democratic
political consultants dream of issues like marijuana legalization. Democrats are
overwhelmingly in favor of it, polls show. So are independents. A majority of
Republicans favor it now too. With legalization seeming such an obvious
political win, all that's stopping Biden, current and former aides say, is
public health. He's read the studies, or at least, summaries of the studies.
He wants to see more. He's looking for something definitive to assure him that
legalizing won't lead to serious mental or physical problems, in teens or
adults.
Still, he'd decriminalize use, which would mean fines instead of jail time,
and move to expunge records for using. He'd remove federal enforcement
in states that have legalized the drug.

Skimmed $7 Million in Theft
Magecart Group 8 skimmed card info from 570+ online shops

payment card information got stolen but you don't know how, when and where?
Maybe you shopped on one of the
570 webshops compromised by the Keeper Magecart group (aka Magecart Group 8)

The list of the online shops hit by the criminals has been released by
researchers from Gemini Advisory, who managed to compile it after gaining access
to the group's dedicated attack server that hosts both the malicious payload and
the exfiltrated data stolen from victim sites.
"Analysis revealed that the Keeper group includes an interconnected network of
64 attacker domains used to deliver malicious JS payloads and
73 exfiltration domains used to receive stolen payment cards data from
victim domains.
The researchers estimated that the group may have generated over $7 million
USD from selling compromised payment cards between 2017 and today.

A lot of articles talk about "How to impress your boss" and give you tips on how
to accomplish this. But at the end of the day, it's all about supporting them,
helping them reach their objectives, and not trying to merely impress them.
Impressing a person is great, but usually short lived. Supporting and helping
them reach their goals requires a long-term effort that, at times can truly test
your resolve and stamina.
The thought has always been that if your boss gets promoted, then you might as
well -- as long as you are the one helping them get ahead.
Just a Thought, Gus
