Retailers Insuring Against Civil Unrest
U.S. businesses splurge on insurance to protect against post-election chaos
Retailers, pharmacies, liquor stores and other merchants across the United
States are gobbling up insurance that protects buildings from damage caused by
societal unrest, worried about possible street violence after the U.S.
presidential election, insurers and brokers told Reuters.
Many shops and offices are facing double-digit premium hikes for such
policies but buying them anyway because the cost of not doing so might be
higher, industry sources said.
Memories of smashed windows, stolen merchandise and stores set ablaze is fresh
in the minds of business owners in major U.S. cities including New York, Los
Angeles and Portland, where aggressors damaged buildings under the cover of
peaceful demonstrations sparked by the May 25 police killing of George Floyd, a
Black man. On Chicago's Magnificent Mile, for instance, stores like Gucci, H&M
and Nordstrom are open but remain clad in plywood, having being looted months
ago.
Sales of commercial policies that cover damage from societal unrest in the
United States have already doubled in October from September levels, insurers
and brokers said. That is partly because some providers, mainly in the
Lloyd's of London marketplace, stopped including "strikes, riots and civil
commotion" coverage within general property policies for businesses such as
retailers and pharmacies that were already hard-hit by civil commotion,
forcing them to buy separate insurance, said a person familiar with the
matter.
Among retailers, high-end brands typically have the greatest risk for protest
damage, said Morgan Schrubb, AXA XL underwriting manager for war, terrorism
& political violence coverage. Many are hunting for alternatives after some
insurers excluded the coverage, Schrubb said.
Some pharmacy, grocery and liquor chains have also been looking for
additional coverage after their insurers stopped including civil unrest in
policies, the person familiar with the matter said.

Curfew Lifts As City Is Roiled By Protests In Walter Wallace
Shooting
Philadelphia officials issued a citywide curfew on Wednesday after consecutive
nights of protests - which at times turned violent - following the fatal police
shooting of a 27-year-old Black man, Walter Wallace Jr. He was holding a knife
when police shot him.
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney lamented the looting and property destruction
that's taken place during nighttime protests: "By looting, people are not only
hurting retail businesses that have struggled in the midst of the pandemic, but
they're doing a great disservice to the many others who want to exercise their
First Amendment rights by protesting," Kenney said at a press conference
Wednesday.
The curfew was in effect from 9 p.m. Wednesday and lasts until 6 a.m. Thursday.
Grocery stores, restaurants and pharmacies may operate in a delivery-only
capacity once the curfew is in effect.
City officials said Wednesday afternoon that 81 people had been arrested
during the previous night's demonstrations, including
53 for burglary, seven
for disorderly conduct and eight accused of assaulting police.

following three nights of unrest in the city and elsewhere in the country.
Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw pledged Wednesday that her office would
release the video and audio footage "in the near future," but will first meet
with Wallace Jr.'s family "to ensure they get an opportunity to view the
materials first."

Tuesday. Salons may open by appointment only.
It is here where the

Jersey struggles to control an
alarming uptick in new virus cases statewide.
New Jersey's governor, Philip D. Murphy, has so far avoided the targeted

U.S. economy rebounded to grow at record 33% rate last quarter
The U.S.
economy grew at a sizzling
33.1% annual rate in the July-September quarter - by far the largest quarterly
gain on record
- rebounding from an epic
plunge in the spring, when the eruption of the coronavirus closed businesses and
threw tens of millions out of work.
Yet the recovery from the deepest recession since the Great Depression of the
1930s remains far from complete. The Commerce Department's estimate Thursday of
third-quarter growth regained only about two-thirds of the output that was lost
early this year when the economy essentially froze as safety orders forced
restaurants, bars and many retailers to shut down.
However, the economy is
now weakening again and facing
renewed threats.
Confirmed viral cases
are surging. Hiring
has sagged. Government stimulus
has run out. With no further federal aid in sight this year, Goldman Sachs
has slashed its growth forecast for the current fourth quarter to a 3% annual
rate from 6%.
The economy is
still roughly 10.7 million
jobs short of
recovering all the 22 million jobs that were lost to the pandemic.

Kroger rolls out rapid antibody COVID-19 testing to all pharmacies
Supermarket giant becomes nation's first retailer
to offer antibody tests to customers
Kroger Health, the company's health care services arm, said Wednesday that the
Food and Drug Administration-authorized rapid antibody tests are now available
at Ralphs Grocery pharmacies in California and Kroger pharmacies Michigan. The
tests are slated to be available at all Kroger Co. pharmacies and 220-plus
Little Clinic locations in 35 states by the end of November.
Rapid antibody testing helps inform patients if they previously have been
infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Supplied by Sumner,
Wash.-based medical devices company Whitmire Medical, the tests are conducted
using a finger-prick blood sample, with results typically available within 15
minutes, Kroger Health said. People who think they may have been infected with
COVID-19 and aren't currently experiencing symptoms are eligible for the test,
which costs $25.
Kroger Health noted that the rapid antibody testing builds on its clinic and
at-home COVID-19 diagnostic testing services.

Are Privacy Concerns Stifling Innovation in Security?
Facial recognition is the latest technology to be targeted because of concerns
about privacy. If such concerns cloud the public perception, they can be harmful
to technology markets. Whether the concerns are genuine or based on
misinformation is often beside the point; the practical damage has already been
done. But beyond market demand, what is the impact of privacy concerns on
technology innovation? We asked this week's Expert Panel Roundtable:
Are privacy concerns stifling
innovation in security and related markets?
Sean
Foley Interface Security Systems LLC:
It's critical that any security installation addresses privacy as a core part of
the design. As cameras become increasingly powerful and feature-rich, their
ability to capture personal identifying information (PII) continues to grow.
Every organization needs to ensure that PII is handled in accordance with local
laws and that any security system deployed is flexible enough to adapt and
evolve as laws and best practices will almost certainly change over time.
Privacy-by-design is the approach any manufacturer or integrator must take, in
which privacy features and functionality are built into the core design from
inception and not simply an afterthought. These features should enable end-users
to easily conform to best practices and mandates. Employees should be able to
opt-in for touchless access, cameras should be able to mask out off-limit areas,
and operator rights and privileges should ensure that only people who are
authorized have access.

The Transformation We Need
Physical Security Has a Lot of Catching Up to Do
Merging the network operations center with the
physical security operations center.
I joined the physical security space from the cybersecurity and networking
world. Coming from that background, it has been fascinating to see how far
behind the physical security world is when compared with those two sectors. It
often feels like the land that time forgot.
But I have no regrets. Why? Because I have seen this movie before, and I like
how it ends. Let me explain.
I firmly believe that the future of physical security is touchless screening by
integrated artificial intelligence-powered platforms that can look for multiple
threats using multiple sensors in a single pass. It will mirror today's modern
cybersecurity platforms: intelligent, connected, precise, and adaptive. It will
be invasive for intruders while being barely noticed by valued visitors.
Just imagine how cool it would be if the same system that is scanning for
threats could also process tickets, guide visitors to their seats, and give
season ticket holders and other trusted visitors the premium experience they
deserve.
The physical security world has a lot of catching up to do in this digital
transformation. But when physical security is transformed, it will finally be
possible to fully merge the network operations center (NOC) with the physical
security operations center (SOC). We'll know were getting there when the NOC and
the SOC are in the same room and the occupants have total situational awareness
of all threats, whether they manifest themselves as bits or atoms, or both. The
situational awareness of the people in the combined SNOC might even include key
visitor experience metrics. They'll think about both risks and opportunities,
both threats and key business results.

Cloud, Mobile & Social Media Tech:
Your Company's Hidden Vulnerability?
New poll suggests enterprises should harden systems
against unconventional attack vectors
SafeGuard Cyber's Digital Risk Survey was conducted to understand how businesses
rate their own security and compliance risks in the new digital reality of the
workplace wrought by COVID-19 pandemic. The study revealed the need to
harden unconventional attack vectors in cloud, mobile, and social media
technologies. Moreover,
enterprise organizations are juggling the twin demands of budget constraints and
the need to drive business outcomes.
Key findings include:
● There is a significant disconnect and tension between the perceived security
and compliance needs and the level of organizational planning. Despite perceived
digital risk around unsanctioned apps, ransomware attacks, and securing various
tech stacks, only 18% of respondents cite security as being a board-level
concern.
● 57% of those surveyed cited internal collaboration platforms, like Microsoft
Teams and Slack, as the tech stack representing the most risk, followed closely
by marketing technologies (41%).
● 1 in 4 respondents cite Executives' personal social media as being an area of
risk.
● The biggest security and compliance challenge is the use of unsanctioned apps
(52%), followed by trying to monitor business communications in multi-regional
environments (43%), suggesting global enterprises are seeing more friction in
adapting processes to the new post-COVID digital workspace.
● When it comes to purchasing new technology, 59% cite budget as the top concern,
followed very closely by "impact on business outcomes" like revenue growth and
agility (56%). Enterprises are juggling the twin demands of budget constraints
and the need to drive business outcomes.

boundaries, said Paula Goldman, chief ethical and humane use officer, at tech

Rethinking Security for the Next Normal -- Under Pressure

changes that have been made are enabling new levels of operational flexibility

security? That's a question that professionals throughout the industry have been
trying to figure out. If you're not sure yet, you're not alone.

How the Cannabis Industry Quickly Adapted to the
Pandemic
COVID-19's Prolonged Impact on the Cannabis Industry
From growers, to producers and wholesalers, to retail sellers - the entire
cannabis industry end-to-end has been impacted in some way by the COVID-19
pandemic. As we continue to pick up the pieces of the initial shock from back in
March and look ahead to the rest of 2020 and into 2021, I'm amazed at how
the cannabis industry quickly adapted
and am optimistic for its future.
Why
COVID-19 didn't kill cannabis sales
As it turns out, the industry saw record sales in the early days of the pandemic
as consumers stocked up, fearing that dispensaries would face a long term shut
down. Many expected these elevated sales trends to slow down after stimulus
checks and unemployment benefits began to run out for Americans. But that didn't
end up happening. We believe that new consumers who began turning to cannabis
rather than pharmaceuticals as a more natural method of treating various
ailments or anxiety had a great experience, and opted to continue on that path
rather than reverting back to previous synthetic methods of treatment.
The pandemic's impact on
cannabis sectors varied
Wholesale operations, especially large outdoor grows in states with lower
infection numbers, have been impacted the least. Guidelines for social
distancing in warehouses have changed the way people work, but higher than
normal demand is forcing wholesalers to adapt quickly to the new normal.
Looking ahead to 2021 and
beyond
While it's nice to think that COVID-19 will become a distant memory in January
next year, that wish is looking less likely. The cannabis industry is still
strong and growing, but I suspect that it will continue to grow at a slower rate
until the pandemic is fully behind us. This is because the cannabis industry is
highly regulated and relies on several other industries - including state and
federal government - which have all been impacted in their own ways by the
pandemic.

Halloween Checklist for Cannabis Businesses
Suppose you own a business, particularly one that deals with pricey, desirable
items like jewelry or recreational cannabis. In that case, you know how
important security is. Before closing up for Halloween night and the night
before, follow this checklist to protect your business from crime:
●
Check your security systems
and fire alarm. Ensure your cameras and floodlights are working if you have them
installed or consider investing in some before Halloween.
●
Leave your property well-lit
to discourage vandalism.
●
Remove your cash register or
pricey retail items from obvious view for the night.
●
If you decorated for the
holidays, make sure your décor does not obstruct any walkways or exits. If
someone hurts themselves on your property, your business could be held liable
even if you weren't there to witness the injury.
Checking with your insurance provider to make sure you understand your coverage
can give you increased peace of mind
during the most violent night of the year.

Cash And 'Cannabis Rents':
Landlords Warming Up To Pandemic-Proof Weed Retailers
Lawyers,
brokers and retailers working with and in the cannabis industry in the LA area
say that sales are up and demand is strong.
Cannabis was designated an
essential business early on and didn't face lockdowns
like the ones experienced by storefronts for retail destinations like gyms, bars
or live music venues.
With cannabis tenants doing so well, some experts anticipate that
it could get easier for
retailers in the industry to find space
as the market shifts and tenants hold more power over landlords who have space
to spare.
For those looking to enter the heavily regulated industry, finding a retail
space is a huge hurdle. Because cannabis is still illegal federally, the pool of
available real estate is often limited to those spaces whose owners own them
outright. Among those owners, the pool of landlords who are open to renting to
cannabis tenants has been smaller still. Nevertheless,
there is continuing traction
for opportunistic investors.

Banks Navigate Hazy Regulations to Serve Cannabis Businesses
Many financial institutions looking to offer banking services to the expanding
number of legal cannabis growers and distributors in the U.S. are still limited
by
spotty regulations and
expensive compliance efforts.
The
disparities between federal
and state laws
governing the use of marijuana
and hemp, and the differences across states, are inhibiting banks from stepping
into what has become a lucrative and legal business in many areas. Regulators
have issued scant guidance and some of the existing advisories are outdated or
set few clear obligations for banks, such as information that a bank should ask
for from potential clients, financial institutions say.

$500K Cargo Theft Ring
Tampa, FL: Four Individuals Plead Guilty In $500,000 Tequila Cargo Theft Ring
Each
have each pleaded guilty to charges involving cargo theft of an interstate
shipment of goods, and receipt and possession of stolen goods. They
face a maximum penalty of 10
years in federal prison.
According to court documents, on December 30, 2018, Escobar, Ramirez, Obaya, and
Estrada stole a tractor trailer that was parked near U.S. Route 301 in Tampa.
The trailer contained cases of Patron tequila, with a
value of more than $500,000.
The tequila was an interstate shipment from Texas that was en route to a
business in Lakeland, Florida. The shipment had not yet reached its final
destination when the trailer was stolen.
The trailer was relocated to Thonotosassa where the defendants proceeded to move
cases of the tequila from the trailer to a nearby box truck. The
box truck was
registered to Escobar. Deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office
were alerted to the movement of the trailer and, when they arrived on scene, the
deputies observed the defendants
moving the cases of tequila
from the trailer to the box truck.
When the deputies commanded the individuals to stop, they fled but were later
arrested near the scene. The cases of tequila were recovered.

Madison, WI: MPD warns of spike thefts at gas stations, grocery store parking
lots
The Madison Police Department is recommending drivers lock their vehicles while
pumping gas after seeing a spike in theft cases at gas stations and grocery
story parking lots. MPD said the trend continued Saturday when a 43-year-old
Madison woman was filling her tank at a Kwik Trip on Maple Grove Rd.
The woman saw a red Cadillac SUV pull up to the pump next to her, but it left
after a couple minutes. During the time it was there MPD suspects someone from
inside the SUV got out and stole the woman's laptop and purse because when she
returned to the car they were gone. MPD is also suggesting drivers keep their
purses with them while at gas stations and in grocery store parking lots instead
of leaving them in the car.

When anyone goes for an interview you've got to play to win. You should not
allow: any outside variable, any future promotion thoughts or promises, your
guilt feelings towards your current employer or boss, your preconceived opinions
of the possible future employer, or any miss-step in the process on the part of
the future employer disrupt or impact your performance. All interviews have long
range implications on your career. The executives interviewing you are part of a
community and you'll run into them again at another company. So if you do get
involved and go for an interview, commit yourself all the way and play to win.
It doesn't mean you've got to take the job. It just means you have to perform at
100%.
