Whitepaper: Top 4 Factors to Consider for Your Retail Security System

Modern physical security solutions for retail offer benefits that go far beyond simply improving security. Today's systems gather a wealth of data from video surveillance systems, access control, automatic license plate readers, identity management, and a variety of other sensors and systems. Yet without a fully unified software solution, it's hard to see how all these puzzle pieces fit together.

The right physical security system can significantly impact your security team's ability to target loss prevention, make informed decisions, and improve customer service.

When selecting the retail security system for your organization, there are four things to consider:

1. Actionable insights that improve daily retail operations.
2. An open architecture that scales as your business grows.
3. Support for cloud and hybrid-cloud security functionalities.
4. A unified platform that centralizes operation

The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact

Retail Workers Ditch the Industry Over Theft & Crime Surge
Theft and crime are driving retail workers to look for new roles, joint study from the Loss Prevention Research Council and Verkada finds
More than four in ten retail workers in the U.S. say they are likely to leave their current job in the next 12 months due to personal safety concerns, according to new research conducted by the Loss Prevention Research Council (LPRC) in partnership with Verkada.

LPRC and Verkada's State of Retail Safety Report reveals the challenges facing retail workers and, importantly, offers a blueprint for employers tasked with addressing them.

Safety concerns are widespread, and workers report higher-ups aren't taking action: More than one in four (27%) retail workers reported feeling unsafe at work. Those fears aren't unfounded: more than half (54%) of retail workers experienced customer aggression or harassment. Despite these persistent threats, nearly one in four (22%) retail workers say their workplace has minimal to no security and 62% say that their company hasn't changed the level of security measures in the last 12 months.

These threats have a ripple effect on retention and hiring: Nearly twenty percent of retail workers report they have considered looking for a new job due to personal safety concerns, and they are motivated: 40% report they are likely to leave their current job in the next 12 months due to personal safety concerns. Retailers face hurdles when they're backfilling these roles, though: 37% of store managers agree that concerns about safety are a barrier to hiring.

Retail workers believe better security would help: Nearly three in four (71%) retail workers who have experienced some type of violence at work say they would feel safer with enhanced security measures. Those same respondents say that theft (77%), robbery (76%), and physical assaults (61%) could have been prevented had better security been in place.

But just increasing security isn't enough: Retail workers also need better mechanisms to report these threats to law enforcement. Only half (52%) of respondents always report violent incidents to police/law enforcement. The number drops even lower when asked about witnessing a coworker(s) experiencing physical violence, where only 44% reported to police or law enforcement.

"Retail is a cornerstone of the economy, supporting 1 in 4 American jobs. The unfortunate reality is that today, retail workers are being asked to shoulder unacceptable risks every time they clock into work," said Read Hayes, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Loss Prevention Research Council. "This research provides a sobering snapshot of that reality, and builds on the Loss Prevention Research Council's ongoing work to provide a roadmap for how retailers can better protect their employees and merchandise, and importantly, create safer work environments."

The Friction Between Security Measures & Shopping Experience
Shoplifting on the rise this year as stores balance security with the shopping experience
As the holiday shopping season intensifies, businesses in major cities continue to grapple with a rise in theft, and experts are working to better track the data.

Experts are able to zone in on some patterns. In Atlanta, police reported a 14% increase in shoplifting incidents this year compared to last. In contrast, a mid-year report from the Council on Criminal Justice, which analyzed law enforcement data from 23 cities, also found a 24% increase in shoplifting during the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year.

The numbers are likely an undercount, the report notes, given that the data is based on incidents reported and doesn't reflect the total that occurred. Ernesto Lopez, a researcher with the Council on Criminal Justice, suggests that heightened attention to shoplifting may also explain an uptick.

Lopez said a good sense of the data is needed to inform better policy. The FBI, he explained, pulls statistics from two different sources, making it challenging to understand the full scope of the shoplifting problem and the reason for upticks. Earlier this year, the Council on Criminal Justice released its working group's recommendations aimed at improving crime data infrastructure, not just for retail theft but also for more serious crimes such as non-fatal shootings.

Meanwhile, for business owners like Brown, the impact of theft goes beyond just security measures-it affects the bottom line. He said such incidents could potentially lead to higher prices for consumers as retailers try to recoup their losses.

"The challenge for retailers is to ensure that security doesn't create a tense atmosphere in their stores," Bowman said. "No one wants their customers feeling nervous while shopping."

With the holiday shopping season in full swing, Brown reminds people of the impact on the community as a whole. He hopes would-be thieves reconsider their actions. 11alive.com

'Tis the Season for Retail Theft
'Theft always a problem during holiday season'
The Washington County Sheriff's Office told KOIN 6 News that theft is always a problem during the holiday season, specifically with shoplifting and organized retail theft.

"Organized retail theft is that theft where the person who's stealing the property is then going to give it to a fence, or someone else who is going to sell it on a different marketplace and undercut the traditional retailer," Huey said. "So the business owner really loses twice."

Most of the stolen goods they see "comes from the big box stores," he said. "Our loss prevention teams within those stores really work with us to try and get us a better, best information that they can at the time so that we can act on these."

Shoppers Andrew Lepley and Truc Lepley said they "definitely lock them in the car" when they have multiple packages and are still shopping. "Make sure they're in the back" or in the trunk.

Another suggestion involves moving your car to a different parking area before making another round at the shops in case someone watches you put your bags in the trunk.

Additionally, you can ask at stores and malls if they have a package holding area where you can leave purchases and get a receipt that shows they belong to you. This is all so you can come back and pick them up when you are done shopping. yahoo.com

'Private Security Personnel Will Be Hired in the Thousands'
What Role Will Private Security Play in Trump's Mass Deportations
Private security agencies have partnered with the Federal Protective Services, Immigration and Naturalization, and Homeland Security for dozens of years to protect federal properties, staff, and visitors, and for at least a dozen years, they've also had a hand in guarding, transporting and protection of illegal immigrants.

Private security agencies have been hired for years to transport illegal migrants from Customs and Border Patrols to detention centers, hospitals, and processing facilities. Customs and Border Protection was and still is looking for ways to use private security companies to replace agents and officers assigned to guard and transportation roles.

The agency said in papers filed both then and recently again that it wants to minimize the use of frontline agents for those duties. Private security guards have replaced CBP officers and Border Patrol agents guarding people in custody at hospitals and courtrooms and also act as guards in transportation assignments.

Contractors are often seen along the southern border acting in several different capacities and are expected to have additional training including the knowledge of the government's standards for use of force by CBP as well as transport and escort procedures.

If, as the President-Elect has indicated, a massive round-up and deportation operation takes place, private security personnel will be hired in the thousands to perform custodial duties mainly that of transportation and facility security.

With the inability of local, state, and federal law enforcement to staff employees for day-to- day duties, civilian employees nationwide have been hired as Community Service Officers, Civilian Accident Investigators, Parking Enforcement Agents, and Evidence Technicians.

Once again, an operation of this magnitude currently being planned by the Trump administration will need civilian security personnel to provide non-law enforcement services. Currently, contracted private security in Arizona and Texas are armed and fulfill tasks that were previously planned in 2021. privateofficerbreakingnews.blogspot.com

Breaking Through the 'Digital Noise'
Retail Media Networks Set to Forever Transform Loyalty & Consumer Engagements

By Tony D'Onofrio - President, Sensormatic

Today's world is media noisy, but much of the messaging is broadly delivered with minimal impact. Television and newspapers were primary historical mediums for delivering product knowledge, differentiation, and building consumer loyalty.

The average human attention span has dropped from 12 seconds in 2000 to a just 8 seconds in 2020. A goldfish now has a higher span that a human at 9 seconds.

The internet has intensified the media noise. Globally, individuals between the age of 16 to 64 now spend an average six hours, 40 minutes online (for the United States is 7 hours and 3 minutes). This equates to 47 hours per week and 101 days per year. By this estimation, beginning at age 18, a person who lives to 80 will have spent 17 years of their adult life using the internet.

The increased online digital noise is changing viewer habits of traditional media such as television. Note the decline in daily viewing time with digital surpassing traditional television in 2022.

Younger generations are accelerating the shift to digital. About 1 out of 6 Millennials said they did not watch any original TV series from traditional TV sets within the past 30 days, a significant trend highlighting the potential for linear TV viewing to erode over time. If young people do watch television, it is on other digital devices, often skipping the commercials.

Backing Away from DEI?
Walmart DEI gives up the ghost, giving way to 'belonging'

A cultural moment all but forced employers to pivot to DEI in 2020. If the retailer's decision demonstrates anything, it is how far the pendulum has swung since then.

Walmart is rolling back several diversity, equity and inclusion programs, the company confirmed to sister publication HR Dive on Tuesday, joining a slew of other large U.S. employers.

The company will not renew a five-year commitment to create a racial equity center and has ended its supplier diversity goals. It also ended participation in the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index. Anti-DEI activist Robby Starbuck claimed credit for Walmart's announcement in a post to X on Tuesday.

"We've been on a journey and know we aren't perfect, but every decision comes from a place of wanting to foster a sense of belonging, to open doors to opportunities for all our associates, customers and suppliers and to be a Walmart for everyone," the company said in an email. retaildive.com

UK Supermarket Chain Recovers from Ransomware Attack
Blue Yonder moves closer to full recovery after November ransomware attack

U.K. supermarket chain Morrisons says its operations are mostly restored, while Blue Yonder is working with other customers to recover operations.

Blue Yonder is making progress toward a full recovery following a pre-Thanksgiving ransomware attack, the company said Sunday. A number of impacted customers are back up and running.

The Arizona-based supply chain technology company was the target of a Nov. 21 ransomware attack, which impacted its managed services hosted environment. Major companies, including Starbucks and U.K. supermarket chain Morrisons, dealt with operational disruptions in connection with the attack.

"We are making good progress, several of our impacted customers have been brought back online, and we are actively working directly with others to return them to normal business operations," a Blue Yonder spokesperson said via email.

Morrisons, which has about 500 stores in the U.K., said the Blue Yonder attack led to an outage in its warehouse management systems for fresh food and produce. The company on Monday said the situation has significantly improved.

"We are recovering quickly and our back up system is working well," a spokesperson said via email.

There are still some supermarkets where some products are not fully available, but the chain said it is making good progress, Morrisons said.

Starbucks last week said the attack impacted an internal platform the company uses to track hours worked by employees. The company reverted to manual processes to make sure workers would get paid. A spokesperson was not immediately available for comment Monday. cybersecuritydive.com

'Tis the Season for Cyberattacks
As holiday season begins, US braces for looming risk of cyberattacks

Security teams are on the alert for nation-state threats and ransomware as millions of workers break for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

AdvertisementJust ahead of the holiday season, U.S. companies and critical infrastructure providers are once again bracing for the potential risk of cyberattack, as threat groups look to exploit distracted IT security teams for maximum leverage.

The vast majority of organizations - nearly 9 in 10 - hit by ransomware over the past 12 months were targeted at night or over a weekend period, when IT security staffing was low, a November report from Semperis shows.

Nearly two-thirds of organizations said they were targeted by ransomware after a major corporate event when employees could be distracted, such as a restructuring or major layoff announcement, an initial public offering or a corporate merger.

The report, conducted in partnership with Censuswide, is based on a survey of more than 900 IT security professionals in the U.S., U.K., France and Germany. cybersecuritydive.com

New Password Guidance
When password rules change, who benefits?

As the National Institute of Standards and Technology rolls out updated password guidance, some experts want to make passwords a thing of the past.

Nobody likes passwords. Or, more specifically, nobody likes trying to remember passwords, especially when company systems force users to change their passwords every 60 or 90 days.

Industry standards had evolved to encourage users frequently change passwords, incorporating a complicated series of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols between eight and 12 characters. It was supposed to thwart credential theft, so that's what companies enforced.

But the National Institute of Standards and Technology is changing its password recommendations in an effort to improve digital identity guidelines.

The agency no longer recommends users change passwords four or six times a year. Instead, a new password is in order if the previous one was compromised. cybersecuritydive.com

Global Amazon Strike

Amazon workers continue global strike through Cyber Monday
Thousands of Amazon workers around the world began striking on Black Friday in order to receive improved pay and working conditions from the giant online retailer, and the strike is continuing through Cyber Monday.

The Amazon workers decided to use Back Friday, arguably the biggest shopping day of the year in the U.S., to launch its strike. Dubbed "Make Amazon Pay," there have been demonstrations in more than 20 countries. The workers are represented by UNI Global Union.

According to Adobe Analytics via CNN, online shoppers spent $10.8 billion on Friday, approximately $1 billion more than in 2023. The same analytics expect Cyber Monday to net a record $13.2 billion in shopping sales, 6.1% more than in 2023.

"This is the fifth year employees have gone on strike to make their demands for higher pay and better benefits," KIRO 7 reporter Brooke Griffin said. "They're also asking the company to respect workers' rights to join a union."

Amazon subsequently made it clear it does not support, let alone understand, the strike, stating, "This group is being intentionally misleading and continues to promote a false narrative."

"The fact is, at Amazon, we provide great pay, great benefits and great opportunities, all from Day One," Amazon said, according to KIRO 7.

Some of the countries having Amazon-related demonstrations include France, Bangladesh, Australia, London and the U.S., the union said on X. In the U.S., Amazon Teamsters are holding demonstrations in California, New York, Kentucky, Michigan and Illinois. It's unclear if any demonstrations are occurring in Washington Monday. mynorthwest.com

Suffolk County, NY: Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney's Retail Theft Crackdown results in Repeat Offenders receiving lengthy sentences
Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced the initial results of the Retail Protection Partnership, a program he created in October 2023, in response to rising rates of shoplifting nationwide and particularly in New York State, following bail and discovery reforms. The partnership program allows merchants and law enforcement to work collaboratively to investigate and successfully prosecute the top shoplifting offenders in Suffolk County. While reports of shoplifting have increased dramatically in New York and nationwide, reported retail larceny incidents in Suffolk County have decreased since the District Attorney Tierney's Retail Protection Partnership began. "We must protect our merchants and the jobs that come from retail businesses. In Suffolk County, you cannot steal someone else's property. Through our Retail Protection Partnership, we are aggressively prosecuting repeat shoplifters and seeing actual results," said District Attorney Tierney. "When criminals target our local businesses, they are not just stealing merchandise. They are threatening jobs, driving up costs for honest consumers, and destabilizing neighborhoods that depend on these stores. Our message is clear: retail theft in Suffolk County will earn you jail time, not a revolving door." "Retail theft has a widespread impact from the business itself down to the consumer," said Suffolk County Police Acting Commissioner Robert Waring. "The Retail Protection Partnership has taken a major step in curtailing the behavior of shoplifters. This public-private partnership is a model that will benefit retailers and consumers, while sending a message to thieves that combatting retail theft is a priority for law enforcement in Suffolk County."     suffolkcountyny.gov

Networking has always been a key to career development and finding that next job. However, if you're not careful it can also limit you, eliminate you and even work against you. If your network is comprised of executives doing exactly what you do, then you may have competition and may even find some working against you. You've got to broaden and expand your network outside your immediate group and establish relationships outside your company and your professional circle. Remembering that quantity is no substitute for quality and, as in any mutually beneficial relationship, what you bring to the table for them is as important as what they bring to the table for you.
