Six Questions to Ask
Before Deploying AI-Powered Video Analytics
Brent
Boekestein
Vice President of Enterprise Accounts,
OpenEye
Over the course of my career, I've orchestrated effective deployments of
AI-powered video analytics for numerous F10 corporations, major critical
infrastructure providers, and federal government agencies. While each business
has its own distinct technical requirements and needs, I have noticed a
consistent pattern in the decision-making criteria they follow Below, I'll
explore the six most common and pressing questions that businesses ask before
incorporating AI into their video security.
1. What goals do we want to achieve with AI-powered
video analytics?
It's crucial to have a clear vision and a well-defined business driver when
starting on any initiative. Otherwise, you might find yourself with so many
pilots that it feels like you're running an airline!
In my previous work with clients, I've employed various goals and associated
KPIs to measure success. Below, I've covered a few of those goals that I've set
with clients in the past and how we measured them.
Goal #1: Better Security
Reduced investigation time
We have seen customers reduce their investigative time /paragraph by 50% with
AI, meaning they were able to handle twice the number of investigations with the
same staff.
Loss averted
According to the
35th annual Hayes Annual Retail Theft Survey, the average loss per retail
theft incident was over $800 in 2022.
One of the best ways to measure this goal is by utilizing AI and seeing whether
a reduction was made against the average loss during incidents of theft.
Goal #2: Enhanced Safety
Unsafe behavior incident count
According to the 2022 National Council on Compensation Insurance's (NCCI)
Workers Compensation Statistical Plan database, injuries resulting in fracture,
crush, or dislocation cost employers $60,934 per incident.
If you've got spaces where heavy equipment and people cross paths, there's clear
value in using analytics to detect when a person is in a location they shouldn't
be.
Goal #3: Improved Operational Efficiency
Staff adherence to operational processes
Using analytics to measure wait times for customers in a drive through lane or
waiting to check out at a register provides immediate value to businesses in
sectors where employee-client interaction is so integral.
Guest occupancy counts and mapping
Understanding
not only what your customers are buying but how they're interacting with your
store as they move through it is incredibly valuable data, all of which AI can
provide.
For this goal, it's important to focus on real time and historic trends for
occupancy, people counting, and heat mapping.
Goal #4: Superior Customer Experience
Dwell times
All stages of the customer journey can be analyzed with AI-powered video.
This could be journey times, customer wait time, queue lengths, food delivery
time, employee present, or walk-offs for in person ordering.
2. What legal and ethical considerations should we
consider before utilizing AI technology?
There are four distinct areas to focus on when evaluating the legal and ethical
considerations of AI deployments...

The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact
Retailers Say Facial Recognition is 'Most
Effective' Anti-Theft Measure
Majority of Food Retailers Are in 'Theft Crisis' Mode
Avery Dennison survey takes current pulse of
companies in the U.S. and U.K.
It's
no secret that retail theft has become a major issue for grocers in recent
years, and solutions company Avery Dennison is taking a closer look at how
industry executives are currently looking at the issue. According to new
research from the company, 65% of food retailers in the United States and
United Kingdom say the impact of theft has reached a crisis point, with 38%
of respondents saying theft is a bigger concern today than it was 12 months ago.
Avery Dennison surveyed 300 senior retail leaders representing brands with
more than 200 stores, and for food retailers, addressing the impact of theft
was found to be the leading business concern. Other pressing concerns included
optimizing omnichannel, improving staff efficiencies, minimizing supply chain
disruptions and addressing talent shortages, respectively.
Grocers are still in the process of boosting their response to theft, with
55% reporting that 3% to 4% of their total IT budget is allocated to retail
theft detection and prevention. Half of the retailers surveyed said those
budgets include an increase in spend over the last two years. However, 27%
believe those allocated resources are insufficient.
Francisco Melo, president, Solutions Group at Avery Dennison, said: "To protect
profits and create safer store environments, it is imperative that retailers
take a data-led approach to security. Leveraging advanced track and trace
technologies such as RFID, with real-time analytics, will help to turn loss
prevention into a proactive operation rather than a reactive one."
Indeed, facial recognition technology was said to be
the most effective measure deployed to date among food retailers,
followed by security guards, license plate recognition technology and RFID tags,
respectively.
As for the future, 77% of respondents said they have either deployed RFID
tags or plan to in the next two years, while 42% will deploy AI-enabled
cameras and 36% plan to introduce facial recognition technology during that
time.

Canadian Retailers Grapple With Crime Surge
Retail Council of Canada looks to reduce shoplifting, violence at stores
Canadian businesses and police services are
working together to cut down on retail theft and violence.
Rui
Rodrigues with the
Retail Council of Canada told CTV News Atlantic's Todd Battis in
an interview Monday it launched a loss prevention task force a
year-and-a-half ago to bring together police and businesses so they could
figure out a joint approach to tackling retail crime.
"We have organized events with police and retailers where we can blitz areas
where we see retail crime," Rodrigues said. "We have 60 police services
across the country that participate regularly. It's a continued effort."
Retailers in Atlantic Canada and beyond have expressed frustration and concern
over what many of them see as a rising level of shoplifting and violence at
their stores. Rodrigues noted while it's hard to get concrete statistics on
such a rise, anecdotally the Retail Council has heard
thefts could be up by 30-to-50 per cent.
In 2021, Statistics Canada reported a 1,484 per cent rate change in
shoplifting under $5,000 in Halifax compared to 2020.
Thefts outside of shoplifting are also problems in Atlantic Canada. Earlier this
year, the New Brunswick RCMP announced they will no longer respond to gas
pump thefts unless there is an immediate or ongoing threat to public safety.
Rodrigues said the Retail Council plans to continue working with government
and police to address crimes in stores.

Anti-Theft Measures Spark Some Backlash
Ottawa, Canada: Concerns about Plexiglas prompt inspections at some Loblaws
locations in Ottawa
Inspections
are underway at more than one Loblaws location in Ottawa after complaints were
filed about tall Plexiglas barriers.
Loblaws says the Plexiglas barriers have been installed as part of its
anti-theft measures. "If somebody wants to steal something from a grocery store,
they're going to steal it anyway," said shopper Gilles Lacasse. "I think it's a
waste of money. They don't look nice. Almost like telling you not to go in
there." Some shoppers have safety concerns with the configuration of the
barriers including the height and width-often spanning for a long stretch before
any gaps by the entrance and exit.
In a statement to CTV News Ottawa, Loblaw writes that "using Plexiglas
partitions is a proven, industry-wide way to prevent theft and keep a
convenient, welcoming customer experience." The statement adds that the barriers
are "fully compliant with all safety and regulatory plans." The Retail Council
of Canada echoed concerns around rising theft.

UK: Grocery chain facing rise in 'fraudulent coupons' as social media users brag
of huge discounts
Some shoppers at UK grocery-store chain
Sainsbury's say they've got huge discounts using its app.
They
appear to have repeatedly scanned a coupon at its self-service checkouts,
taking large discounts off their shop. Sainsbury's said it had observed an "increase
in fraudulent coupons."
A UK grocery chain says it has been dealing with an increase in "fraudulent
coupons" after social media users bragged of getting huge discounts on their
shopping by repeatedly scanning the same coupon. Videos posted on social
media, some of which have gained millions of views, seem to show some
Sainsbury's customers getting massive reductions on their shops when they use
its self-service checkouts by scanning screenshots of a promotional coupon on
the retailer's app multiple times.
The Grocer, a British publication focusing on the grocery store trade, said that
a step-by-step guide on using the coupons had been shared via a voice note on
messaging platform WhatsApp. Retail Gazette reported that the coupon
appeared in Sainsbury's app on Monday.
"We have seen an increase in fraudulent coupons in our stores and we have
processes in place to detect and block them," a Sainsbury's spokesperson told
Business Insider. "We also have in-store detectives monitoring for fraudulent
attempts and we are working closely with the police on this issue."

Kroger-Albertsons Merger Put on Hold
Judge puts temporary hold on Kroger, Albertsons $25 billion deal
A
Denver District Court has temporarily halted the proposed $25 billion merger
of The Kroger Co. and Albertsons Cos.
During a hearing on July 25, Judge Andrew J. Luxen granted a preliminary
injunction delaying the merger and also cancelled an Aug. 12 hearing on the
matter. The two companies agreed to the delay as they await a court ruling
on a lawsuit filed by the attorney general of Colorado to block the deal. The
trial is set to start on Sept. 30.
In a statement, Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser said he was pleased "that
Kroger and Albertsons agreed to halt their plans to merge until the court
rules on the state's lawsuit to permanently block the grocery merger."
"This is great news for shoppers, workers, farmers, and other suppliers
who can rest assured that this mega merger will not go into effect during
harvest season and while kids are headed back to school," he continued.
The Federal Trade Commission and a group of states have separately sued to
challenge the deal in Oregon federal court. A hearing in that case is set to
start on Aug. 26.
Earlier this month, Kroger released a list of the stores, distribution
centers and plant locations that the two grocers plan to divest to C&S Wholesale
Grocers as they look to allay antitrust concerns over their proposed $24.6
billion merger with Albertsons Cos. The assets include 579 Kroger- and
Albertsons-owned stores across 18 states and Washington, D.C., including 124
locations in the state of Washington, 101 in Arizona, 91 in Colorado and 63 in
California.

Department Stores Suddenly Making Waves After
Struggling to Stay Relevant
The Backroom Podcast: All of a sudden, a lot is happening at department stores
The team discusses a barrage of news from
several players in a retail space that has been written off many times.
The
department store is a century-plus-old retail model that has survived a slew
of transformational challenges, including the rises of specialty retail and
e-commerce. But in recent decades, several if not all major players have
struggled to stay relevant, amid the decline of the American mall and the
fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lately, though, several players in the space - including Macy's, Saks Fifth
Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and more - have garnered headlines with
major developments, announcements and possibilities. In fact, another department
store, Southern retailer Belk, made the news after this episode was
recorded. Belk picked up new owners with controlling interest in the company and
shrunk its debt by nearly $1 billion, the biggest financial relief since its
24-hour spin through bankruptcy three years ago.
Retail Dive Senior Editor Kaarin Vembar and Senior Reporter Daphne Howland
discuss what's going on at these retailers, what it might mean and what could
happen next.

The 'Surveillance Pricing' Debate
Should Surveillance Pricing Be Allowed or Prevented?
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating "surveillance pricing,"
where companies use artificial intelligence to set
different prices for the same item based on individual customer data.
This practice could lead to varying prices for the same product depending on a
customer's characteristics and behavior.
According to CNBC, the FTC has questioned eight companies - Mastercard,
JPMorgan Chase, Accenture, McKinsey, Task, Revionics, Bloomreach, and Pros -
about their use of AI and customer data in pricing. FTC Chair Lina Khan
expressed concerns that such practices could exploit personal data to set higher
prices and undermine privacy. The investigation aims to reveal how these
practices affect consumer pricing.
"Firms that harvest Americans' personal data can put people's privacy at risk.
Now firms could be exploiting this vast trove of personal information to charge
people higher prices. Americans deserve to know whether businesses are using
detailed consumer data to deploy surveillance pricing, and the FTC's inquiry
will shed light on this shadowy ecosystem of pricing middlemen." - FTC
Chair Lina Khan via the FTC
Different forms of price surveillance have existed for quite some time - from
charging different amounts to specific age groups to the newer notion of
dynamic pricing at fast-food restaurants. Additionally, individual
businesses that have loose pricing can adapt based on their perception of their
customer. For example, appliance installers, car repair shops, and handymen
might charge more if they notice that their customer is from a more affluent
neighborhood or has an expensive car.

'Retailers Are Susceptible'
Cloud security threats CISOs need to know about
What are the most significant cloud security threats
CISOs must know in 2024? How do these threats impact different sectors, such as
finance, healthcare, and retail?
The most significant cloud security threats right now are data breaches,
misconfiguration, insider threats, advanced persistent threats, ransomware,
API vulnerabilities and supply chain and third-party vulnerabilities. Financial
institutions, healthcare organizations and retailers face specific risks that
are worth noting:
• Financial institutions face substantial risks, including
financial loss, regulatory penalties, and loss of customer trust due to breaches
and insider threats. Misconfigurations can expose sensitive financial data,
violating compliance with regulations like SOX and GDPR.
• Healthcare organizations are particularly vulnerable to data
breaches, risking patient safety and violating HIPAA regulations.
Misconfigurations and insider threats can lead to unauthorized disclosure of
patient information, causing privacy violations and significant fines.
• Retailers are susceptible to operational
disruptions and loss of customer loyalty due to data breaches and
ransomware attacks, which can also impact PCI compliance.
Cloud security monitoring and detection is necessary to identify and respond to
threats in real-time. Regular security audits and compliance checks ensure
adherence to relevant regulations and identify potential vulnerabilities.
Employee training and awareness programs are essential for mitigating insider
threats and promoting security best practices. Implementing a zero-trust
architecture minimizes the risk of unauthorized access. Developing and regularly
updating incident response plans enables quick and effective responses to
security breaches.

Cyber Insurance Can Improve Cybersecurity
Posture
How cyber insurance coverage is evolving
Cyber insurance coverage can help raise
security baselines across businesses, but organizations that have standalone
policies are the exception to the rule.
One of the most effective ways to improve cybersecurity throughout an
organization is to purchase cyber insurance.
It won't eliminate the possibility of a data breach, but because there are
strict rules to gain approval during the underwriting purposes, an
organization's overall cyber posture automatically improves, according to
research from Forrester.
Despite the positive impact from cyber insurance, the Forrester study found
just one-quarter of companies have a stand-alone cyber insurance policy.
There are plenty of reasons why organizations continue to shy away from
stand-alone cyber insurance. It could be that other insurance policies held by
the company include some cyber coverage. But concerns around cost and
coverage limits have also scared away potential buyers.
Adding to the coverage gaps is the complexity of gaining coverage, with separate
coverage for first and third party policies.

$5.4B in Losses Tied to Global IT Outage
CrowdStrike disruption direct losses to reach $5.4B for Fortune 500, study finds
A report from Parametrix estimates cyber
insurance will cover only about 10% to 20% of losses.
Parametrix said the global IT outage linked to Crowdstrike will likely cost
the Fortune 500, excluding Microsoft, at least $5.4 billion in direct financial
losses, in
a report released Wednesday.
Cyber insurance will only cover 10% to 20% of the losses, based on large
risk retentions and policy limits at many companies, according to Parametrix.
CyberCube estimates the cyber insurance market will face preliminary insured
losses of between $400 million and $1.5 billion, potentially the single
worst loss in the cyber insurance sector over 20 years.
Parametrix expects the healthcare sector to see the biggest impact among
industries with $1.94 billion in losses after three-quarters Fortune 500
healthcare companies were impacted. Though banking was also hard-hit,
with an estimated $1.15 billion in direct losses, airlines are expected to have
the highest per company costs.

100+ Amazon Drivers Go On Strike
Amazon driver strike extends its picket line, spreading from Illinois to
Doraville
On Wednesday, unionized Amazon delivery drivers drove from Skokie, Ill. to
Doraville to expand their unfair labor practice picket line.
Members of the Teamsters who are part of Skokie's Local 705 drove to the Amazon
warehouse in Doraville as part of their efforts to have the retail giant
recognize their union and to have them bargain with the Teamsters Union for
a fair contract.
More than 100 Amazon drivers from Skokie have been on strike over what
they say are unfair labor practices and mistreatment of workers since late June,
with the organization saying they've held so-called picket extensions at Amazon
facilities in New York, before coming to Georgia.
"Amazon drivers from Skokie are demanding the company provide affordable,
quality health care, safe working conditions, and fair wages as many drivers
struggle to make ends meet while living paycheck to paycheck," the union
said in a statement. "Amazon routinely dodges responsibility for its drivers
through its Delivery Service Partner (DSP) subcontractor business model, even
though it exercises total control over the wages, workplace conditions, and
safety standards of its DSPs."

Counterfeit Drugs Being Sold Online
Are You Sure Your Ozempic Is Real? Fakes Are on the Rise.
Counterfeit versions of popular drugs used
for weight loss are putting people at risk.
Experts have grown increasingly concerned about fake versions of Ozempic and
popular weight loss drugs. These copycats can look deceptively real, and may
contain dangerous substances or entirely different drugs altogether.
In June, the World Health Organization warned that fake batches of Ozempic
were found in the United States, the United Kingdom and Brazil. Also in
June, Eli Lilly issued a letter expressing concern that
counterfeit versions of its own drugs, Mounjaro and Zepbound, were
being sold online, through social media and at medical spas.
Those who study the counterfeit drug market say these findings are alarming,
but not all that surprising. The drugs are expensive, often hard to find and
highly sought-after.
"Such high demand and short supply and such a desperate population - that's a
recipe for disaster," said George Karavetsos, a former director of the Food
and Drug Administration's Office of Criminal Investigations.

Akron, OH: Shoplifters rob 4 Dollar stores; on the loose after chase with Akron
police
Akron police are looking for several women who are wanted for shoplifting from
four dollar stores in Summit and Stark Counties earlier this month. According to
police, the suspects first robbed the Family Dollar in the 500 block of Cuyahoga
Falls Ave. in Akron on July 14. They loaded up shopping bags and as they were
attempting to leave without paying, the manager and an employee tried to stop
them by grabbing the bags, police said. The bags pulled apart, spilling the
items on the floor. One female suspect then started throwing items at the
manager and tried to spit on them, said police. Later that day, police said the
suspects stole items from a Family Dollar in North Canton. On July 18, they hit
the Family Dollar in the 900 block of Copley Rd. in Akron. The suspect's car was
located later that day at the Dollar General on S. Arlington Street in Akron,
where police said they were again stealing.

Wilmington, DE: State Police Arrest Man for Organized Retail Theft from Wegmans
Delaware State Police arrested 52-year-old Thomas Hetzler, of Wilmington,
Delaware, for organized retail theft charges stemming from multiple shopliftings
that occurred at the Wegmans in Wilmington. On July 23, 2024, at approximately
11:23 p.m., troopers responded to the Wegmans, on Buckley Mill Road, for a
report of a habitual shoplifter that trespassed on the property and shoplifted.
Wegmans employees and troopers were familiar with the suspect, identified as
Thomas Hetzler, from previous shoplifting investigations. Upon arriving,
troopers learned Hetzler placed several food items in a basket and walked out of
the grocery store without paying. After a brief search of the area, troopers
found Hetzler with the stolen items and took him into custody without incident.
A computer inquiry revealed Hetzler had an active No Contact Order with Wegmans
issued by the New Castle County Court of Common Pleas. Additionally, Hetzler had
warrants for his arrest for two prior shopliftings of a similar nature from
Wegmans.

Beverly Hills, CA: BHPD Targets Retail Theft at Small Business Training
Beverly
Hills can be a magnet for organized retail crime due to its worldwide reputation
as a luxury shopping destination, which is why the Beverly Hills Police
Department is teaching businesses how to best protect themselves. On July 17,
BHPD Sgt. Jeffrey Newman led a training for small business owners in
collaboration with officers from the California Highway Patrol's Organized
Retail Crime Task Force. During the program, Newman explained how to recognize
common criminal strategies, effective witness tips and proactive theft
protection measures. Newman said that in recent years property crime has surged
across the state and Beverly Hills is no exception. In fact, it is often seen as
an ideal target due to the concentration of expensive goods and designer stores.
"It's a very renowned city, with wealth and fancy businesses, nice restaurants,"
he said. "There are people who specifically come to the city of Beverly Hills to
commit their crimes, with the illusion that either they're going to get away
with it or that in general it's more worth their time as a criminal."

With everything that goes on in one's personal and professional life, it's
oftentimes difficult to be able to really focus on the day's objectives. It's
easy to get lost in everything going on around you and, while no one can bat
1,000 everyday, you've got to be able to separate -- to use your work as a form
of escape from everything and to get lost in your work. Your work can give your
mind the chance to separate from virtually anything going on in your life which
allows your subconscious time to rethink-refresh- and hopefully see things more
clearly. It's like using work as therapy. The trick is forcing yourself to do
it. Much easier said than done.
