ALTO Takes Retail Crime Cases to the
'End Zone'
How ALTO Achieves Higher Retail Theft Conviction Rates in Philadelphia
Retail
theft remains a growing issue impacting the safety of businesses and
communities alike. A recent
WTAJ report highlighted that retail thefts in Philadelphia, PA
have surged by 53% between 2021 and 2023, with over 37,000 reported
offenses statewide in 2023 alone. Unfortunately, despite the sharp rise,
the state's theft conviction remains less than half, with only 42% of
cases resulting in convictions over a five-year period.
These statistics stress the challenges of holding offenders accountable,
particularly in difficult markets like Philadelphia. However, ALTO's
strategic approach to retail crime accountability has produced
significantly stronger results. With a conviction rate of 57.7% in
the greater Philadelphia area-15% higher than the average reported
by WTAJ-ALTO is setting a new benchmark in retail safety and
accountability.
Moreover, when factoring in dismissed cases that achieved favorable
outcomes (such as diversion programs or negotiated conditions),
ALTO's success rate rises to 66.3%. Here, we'll explore how ALTO's
collaborative and strategic approach achieves these industry-leading
outcomes in this challenging market.

Retailer Partners with Auror, Unveils
New Tech to Fight Crime
UK: Currys unveils major safety spend to protect staff, curb retail
crime
Currys, a British omnichannel technology retailer, has unveiled its
most significant annual investment in store safety measures to date
reaffirming its focus on staff security. The move is aimed at
protecting employees and discouraging retail theft. The announcement
coincides with the company's observance of 'Safety Week' for its store
personnel throughout the UK.
It follows a report from British Retail Consortium which revealed reveal
that incidents of violence and abuse against retail staff surged to
more than 2,000 per day in fiscal year 2023-24, compared to 1,300
daily occurrences the previous year.
The retailer is introducing an array of new technologies and safety
protocols as part of this extensive investment in safety.
Upgrades include enhanced Public Display Monitors in stores deemed
high-risk, experimentation with novel product security measures, and a
commitment to better intelligence gathering and analysis.
Additionally, there will be a heightened focus on security personnel and
surveillance systems.
Currys is piloting the use of staff headsets in select locations,
with a full rollout expected by the end of May this year. These devices
enable staff to communicate more effectively on the sales floor,
enhancing their sense of security, particularly when dealing with
shoplifters.
Currys has also partnered with
Auror for the
implementation of a crime reporting software platform that
streamlines crime reporting and increases its precision.
The software facilitates secure information sharing about crimes and
suspects among stores. By correlating data on offenses nationwide,
it not only equips store employees with knowledge of current threats but
also supports law enforcement efforts to make shopping environments
safer.
Currently undergoing trials in two regions, there are plans to expand
this platform across all stores early next month.

Does Bail Reform Fuel ORC?
No Clear Link Between Bail Reform and
Surging ORC
By
the D&D Daily staff
Recent discussions have centered on the potential impact of bail
reform on organized retail crime. Bail reform initiatives aim to
reduce pretrial incarceration by eliminating cash bail for many
nonviolent offenses, allowing individuals to await trial without
financial constraints. Some critics argue that these reforms may
inadvertently lead to an uptick in organized retail theft by enabling
repeat offenders to return to criminal activity more readily.
However, empirical studies have not substantiated a direct correlation
between bail reform and increased crime rates. A comprehensive study by
the
Brennan Center for Justice analyzed crime trends from 2015 to
2021 across 33 cities, comparing those that implemented bail reforms
with those that did not. The findings indicated
no statistically significant difference in
crime rates between the two groups, suggesting that bail
reform has not led to increased criminal activity.
Similarly, research from
John Jay College examined New York City's bail reform law and its
effect on recidivism. The study found that eliminating bail for most
misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies resulted in reduced re-arrest rates,
indicating that such reforms may contribute to lowering recidivism among
individuals charged with less serious offenses.
While concerns about organized retail crime are valid, attributing
increases solely to bail reform lacks robust evidence. Factors such
as economic conditions, law enforcement practices, and broader societal
issues also play significant roles in crime trends. Addressing organized
retail theft effectively may require a multifaceted approach that
includes targeted law enforcement strategies, community engagement, and
social support systems, rather than solely focusing on bail policies.
Progressive Candidate for NYC Proposes
Alternative to NYPD
NYC mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani floats ‘community safety’ agency as
alternative to more cops
Zohran Mamdani, the most left-leaning candidate in this summer’s
mayoral election, rolled out a public safety plan Tuesday that
hinges on launching a new city agency tasked with using non-police
emergency responses to combat complex problems like mental illness,
homelessness and gun violence.
The
agency would be called the Department of Community Safety and have an
annual budget of $1.1 billion, according to the plan from Mamdani, a
state Assembly member representing western Queens whose mayoral campaign
has gained significant traction recently, especially among younger
voters.
Setting himself apart from many other candidates in the June 24
Democratic mayoral primary, Mamdani, a democratic socialist, isn’t
proposing to hire more NYPD officers as part of his public safety plan.
His blueprint argues more cops won’t be necessary as his newly
envisioned agency would absorb certain responsibilities currently in the
NYPD’s wheelhouse, including responding to mental health emergencies.
That will, in turn, free up officers — who have “a critical role to
play” — to focus on more pressing police work, the plan maintains.
“Its mission will be to prevent violence before it happens by
taking a public health approach to safety,” the plan states of the
Department of Community Safety.

Today is 'Liberation Day': How
Retailers Are Impacted by the Trade War
Trade War Fallout: How Tariffs Are
Reshaping Retail Strategy
By
the D&D Daily
The escalating trade and tariff disputes initiated by the United States
are poised to significantly impact the retail sector, affecting both
operations and consumer pricing. With the U.S. imposing tariffs on
imports from countries such as China, Mexico, and Canada,
retailers are bracing for increased costs
across a broad spectrum of products, including electronics,
clothing, and household goods.
Major retailers like Target and Walmart have indicated that these
tariffs may lead to higher prices for consumers. Target's CEO, Brian
Cornell, highlighted potential price increases on items such as Mexican
produce due to a 25% tariff, while Walmart acknowledged that it might
not be "completely immune" to the federal import taxes.
To mitigate the financial strain, businesses are adopting various
strategies. Some are negotiating price reductions with suppliers,
exploring alternative sourcing options, or absorbing costs to remain
competitive. For instance, companies are considering selling products
without batteries, reducing packaging sizes, and increasing products
that require consumer assembly. These measures aim to offset tariff
impacts without directly passing costs onto consumers.
However, not all sectors can easily adapt. The footwear and apparel
industries, heavily reliant on imports, may find it challenging to
adjust pricing without affecting demand. Analysts warn that these
sectors could face significant pressure as tariffs increase.
Beyond domestic challenges, international trade tensions are
influencing consumer behavior abroad. In Canada, the "Buy Canadian"
movement is gaining momentum, leading retailers to favor local products
over American imports. This shift poses additional challenges for U.S.
companies aiming to maintain their market presence in Canada.
Economists caution that the cumulative effect of these tariffs may lead
to higher consumer prices and potentially lower disposable income.
Historical instances of increased tariffs have often resulted in
elevated prices and economic downturns, underscoring the potential risks
of prolonged trade disputes.
As the situation evolves, retailers must remain agile, exploring
diverse strategies to navigate the complexities of the current trade
environment while striving to minimize the impact on consumers.

U.S. Tariffs: “Liberation Day” and What’s Next
On April 2, 2025, the Trump administration will announce new tariffs on
Canada, dubbed “Liberation Day” by the president. The U.S. aims to
counter what it sees as unfair trade practices by imposing reciprocal
tariffs on key partners, including Canada. Additional tariffs on
Canadian autos and auto parts will follow on Thursday, prompting a third
round of Canadian counter-tariffs targeting more retail goods.
RCC
is actively working with the federal government to minimize the impact
on Canadian retailers. Last week, we submitted comments to
the Department of Finance, urging against tariffs on U.S. goods lacking
domestic or international alternatives. We also pushed for a more
responsive tariff remission process and support for businesses and
consumers. RCC will keep members informed as details emerge.

Injuries are Concern for Majority of Warehouse Workers
A recent survey,
Elevating Every Move: The Formula for High-Performance Warehousing,
from Zebra
Technologies, found that 72% of associates are concerned about
safety on the increasingly busy warehouse floor with 70% specifically
worried about injuries.
Additionally, 69% of associates reported there is a lack of qualified
staff on the warehouse floor and express concerns about fatigue and
physical exhaustion.
These concerns will continue as global warehouse square footage will
increase by 27% to 42 billion square feet in 2030 from 33 billion square
feet in 2023, as projected by Interact Analysis.
As this expansion continues and daily order volumes increase, feedback
shared by frontline workers as part of Zebra’s Warehousing Vision Study
suggests that warehouse leaders will need to move a bit faster to expand
workforce capacity:
-
85% of associates
say, “If my employer does not invest in technology to improve
warehouse operations, we will not meet business objectives.”
-
74% of associates
are concerned they are spending too much time on tasks that could be
automated.

How to Prevent Backdoor Theft and Improve Safety
with Cloud Video

As nearly a third of all theft across businesses is done internally, it's
crucial that companies keep a close eye on their backdoors. These points in your
perimeter present easy-to-target vulnerabilities for would-be thieves, and can
be exploited even more easily by those already working for you. Alongside that,
they also create an area that can be dangerous for your employees. To strengthen
your properties' backdoors while increasing employee safety, businesses can
leverage cloud video surveillance to fortify your store's security.
Cloud video security offers businesses powerful tools to leverage against theft,
such as video analytics, access control and intrusion integration, and alerts.
These features, along with remote management and real-time monitoring, can help
boost employee safety and reduce risk in difficult-to-monitor areas.
In this webinar, we'll cover how
OpenEye Web Services (OWS)
strengthens restaurant and retail businesses with a cloud video platform
designed to fortify every side of your business's security.
This webinar will feature a deep dive into:
-
Implementing access control and intrusion integrations to create a more
complete, end-to-end solution for your business
-
How video analytics can alert you to suspicious or criminal behavior at your
locations

Cybersecurity Can't Be Separated From
World Events
Why global tensions are a cybersecurity problem for every business
With global tensions climbing, cyber attacks linked to nation-states
and their allies are becoming more common, sophisticated, and
destructive. For organizations, cybersecurity can’t be treated as
separate from world events anymore, they’re closely connected.
Conflict between countries is spilling into cyberspace. Whether
it’s during military escalations, trade disputes, or diplomatic
standoffs, governments are using cyber operations to exert pressure,
gather intelligence, or disrupt systems. These attacks often hit private
businesses, not just governments or critical infrastructure.
One growing concern is the blurred line between cybercrime and
state-sponsored hacking. Criminal groups sometimes work directly with
governments, or at least operate with their blessing. This makes
attribution harder and retaliation riskier.
A PwC report outlines how board members and CEOs are paying closer
attention. Executives are asking new questions about risk exposure.
For example, does the company rely on suppliers in politically unstable
regions? Are there assets located in jurisdictions with rising tensions?
These are now cybersecurity questions, not just supply chain ones.
Industrial cyber threats are growing more
strategic
Energy, manufacturing, and healthcare remain top targets. But the range
of sectors at risk is expanding. According to Dragos’ 2025 OT/ICS
Cybersecurity report, cyber threats to operational technology (OT) are
becoming more strategic. Adversaries are learning the inner workings of
industrial environments and probing for weak spots.
This is not limited to power grids or water plants. Any system that
blends physical and digital components is vulnerable. In a
geopolitical crisis, these systems can become high-value targets for
sabotage or disruption.

AI Cybersecurity Detection & Response
AI-Powered Cybersecurity Firm ReliaQuest Raises More Than $500 Million
Armed with AI agents, ReliaQuest’s
platform detects and responds to cyberattacks within minutes, company
says
ReliaQuest, a once-bootstrapped startup that uses artificial
intelligence to automate cybersecurity detection and response, on
Monday announced more than $500 million in funding.
The round, led by investing firms EQT, KKR and FTV Capital, lifts
ReliaQuest’s market valuation to $3.4 billion. Other investors include
Ten Eleven Ventures and Finback Investment Partners. The new funding
will go toward driving global expansion, among other initiatives, the
company said.
Launched in 2007, and based in Tampa, Fla., ReliaQuest operated for
nearly a decade before seeking investor funding. It runs six global
operating centers with more than 1,000 enterprise customers, including
banks, airlines, hospitals and the Boston Celtics professional
basketball team. Recurring revenue recently surpassed $300 million,
according to the company.
Large cybersecurity vendors in recent years have sought to add tools
and bundle services in a bid to become one-stop shops for corporate
security chiefs—an approach known as Extended Detection and Response, or

Can Security Keep Up with AI?
Generative AI Is reshaping financial fraud. Can security keep up?
Fighting financial fraud has always been an arms race between
financial institutions and fraudsters, and AI has made it a much tighter
race. As payments innovations continue, legacy fraud solutions can’t
keep pace. Today, you need to be able to fight AI with AI to beat
fraudsters at their own game.
With many fraudsters leveraging generative AI to launch attacks, fraud
solutions can leverage generative AI to stay ahead in many areas. For
example, generative AI has already been adopted to automate rule
creation and tuning to provide better detection and save fraud teams
time and money on trial-and-error methods.
Organizations need to have adaptive responses to be ready for new and
evolving fraud and scam attacks. Sophisticated AI technologies and
machine learning models can analyze large sets of data and signals in
real-time to identify hidden patterns and correlations through usage
patterns, device information, location information, network
characteristics. These technologies are essential in identifying new and
evolving threats, and they continuously improve over time, which is
particularly crucial in combating deepfake threats.

E-Commerce Challenges for Retailers
How brands and retailers are tackling the pain points of e-commerce
E-commerce once promised faster fulfillment, frictionless checkouts and
hyper-personalization on a global scale, however, rising customer expectations,
operational complexities and technical inefficiencies have made delivering
seamless experiences harder than ever.
And if creating engaging e-commerce experiences is difficult for retailers,
customers will suffer an unpleasant shopping experience, too.
Changing shopper behaviors warrant a new retail
approach
Among the many outcomes of these painful e-commerce experiences is losing
customers, which ultimately costs brands sales.
According to a recently-conducted 2025 Scayle survey, 87% of U.S. shoppers
have abandoned a brand in the last twelve months — citing product quality
issues, slow delivery times and poor online shopping experiences as the top
causes.
Cart abandonment rates are sky-high, too — reaching a
shocking 70% across the board. The shoppers who make it through
checkout are unfortunately sending goods back at an alarming rate: Returns have
doubled since 2019, significantly impacting retailers’ bottom lines. But if
brands ditch free returns to stem the flow, customers simply won’t buy:
Unsatisfactory return policies cause around 18% of shoppers to spend elsewhere,
according to Baymard research. It’s a catch-22 for retailers.
A lean tech stack and a new returns method help
retailers with conversions | Flexible setups enable growth while eliminating
bottlenecks for a more agile strategy:

Drone Deliveries Taking Off Again
Amazon resumes drone deliveries after two-month pause
Amazon has resumed making drone deliveries
in Texas and Arizona after it halted the program earlier this year.
Amazon has restarted drone deliveries in two states after a months-long pause,
the company confirmed.
In January, Amazon halted Prime Air deliveries in College Station, Texas, and
Tolleson, Arizona, the two U.S. markets where it’s testing the service, as
the company rolled out a software update to its drone fleet.
Amazon discovered an abnormality with the drone’s altitude sensor, caused
by dust in the air, that could have caused its system to produce an inaccurate
reading of its position relative to the ground, the company said. Amazon “never
experienced an actual safety issue,” but said it opted to suspend deliveries
while it corrected the issue.
The company brought drone deliveries back online last week after it
completed the software update and received approval from the Federal Aviation
Administration, Amazon spokesperson Av Zammit said in a statement.

Oxnard, CA: Four face federal charges for robbing Home Depot, Walmart
Four
Oxnard residents are facing federal charges in connection with a pair of armed
robberies earlier this year. In a press release, the FBI identified the four as:
Erasmo Jose Corral, 19, Wendy Xitlali Gutierrez, 21, Sylvia Martinez, 51, Ramon
Olvera, 29 According to investigators, the four robbed a Home Depot in Oxnard on
Jan. 4 and a Walmart on Jan. 7. “According to court documents, on both
occasions, Corral brandished a handgun and aimed it at store employees, as he
and his co-conspirators fled with stolen items,” the release said. Corral and
Gutierrez were arrested by the Oxnard Police Department during a traffic stop
after the Walmart robbery, and during that stop, officers allegedly found a
loaded handgun that matched the weapon used in the robbery. Nearly three months
later on March 29, Martinez and Olvera were arrested by OPD officers and
transferred to federal custody two days later. All four face charges of
interference with commerce by robbery and conspiracy to interfere with commerce
by robbery. Each of the robbery charges carries a maximum sentence of 20 years
in federal prison.

Knowing the basic interview questions is one thing. Having the answers is
another. What's more important is communicating openly and honestly in a
professional manner that shows thought, vision and your business knowledge. Try
to apply your background to the interviewer's business and how you can impact it
and add value. The key to a successful interview is bridging the gap between
your background and the prospective employer's company and needs.
