Sensormatic Solutions Releases Results of 2020 Holiday Consumer Survey
Consumers are more likely to shop in-store
on weekdays this holiday season

Controls, the global leader for smart and sustainable buildings, today announced
that Sensormatic
Solutions, its leading global retail solutions portfolio, released the
results of its 2020 Holiday Consumer Survey of more than 1,000 U.S. consumers. A
key finding revealed that nearly half of respondents (43%) have already started
or plan to start their holiday shopping as early as October.
Other key findings include:
• 65% say they are very concerned or concerned
about shopping in-store this holiday season.
• 80% said they would use buy online, ship to home services this holiday
shopping season.
• This was followed by in-store shopping (39%) and other fulfillment services
like buy online, pickup in-store (BOPIS) (33%), buy online, curbside pickup
(33%).
“Despite concerns about COVID-19, many consumers still plan to shop in-store
this holiday season and others will take advantage of services like BOPIS or

Two
former employees of eBay, Inc.
pleaded guilty today to their
roles in a cyberstalking campaign
targeting the
editor and publisher of a
newsletter that eBay
executives viewed as critical of the company.
Stephanie Popp, 32, of San Jose, Calif., eBay’s former Senior Manager of Global
Intelligence, and Veronica Zea, 26, of San Jose, Calif., a former eBay
contractor who worked as an intelligence analyst in eBay’s Global Intelligence
Center (GIC),
pleaded guilty to conspiracy
to commit cyberstalking and conspiracy to tamper with witnesses.
Scheduled sentencing for Feb. 25, 2021.
Popp and Zea were charged along with co-defendants Brian Gilbert, 51, of San
Jose, Calif., a former Senior Manager of Special Operations for eBay’s Global
Security Team and Stephanie Stockwell, 26, of Redwood City, Calif., the former
manager of eBay’s GIC. Gilbert and Stockwell are
scheduled to plead guilty on
Oct. 29, 2020.
Former eBay executives, James Baugh and David Harville, were charged on June 15,
2020. Phil Cooke, another former member of eBay’s Global Security Team, was also
charged and is
scheduled to plead guilty on
Oct. 27, 2020
The charges of conspiracy to commit cyberstalking and conspiracy to tamper with
witnesses each carry a
sentence of up to five years
in prison, three years of supervised release, a fine of up to $250,000
and restitution.

Workplace violence 2nd leading cause of
occupational fatalities
The 29th edition of
Death on the Job: The Toll of Neglect features state and federal data on
worker fatalities, injuries and illnesses, as well as worker protections.
The report is put together by the American Federation of Labor and Congress of
Industrial Organizations (AFL–CIO), the largest federation of unions in the U.S.
In particular, the report examines some of the industries and workers most
affected by the pandemic. Data shows that at least 163,000 health care
workers have been infected by COVID-19, and 713 have died as of the end of
September, while the meatpacking, food processing and farming industries
reported more than 58,000 infections and 238 deaths from April 22 to September
16.
According to the report, susceptible work environments include indoor
workplaces, those with poorly ventilated spaces or crowded working conditions,
and where workers are in proximity to infected individuals.
Other statistics in the report include that workplace violence accounted for 828
deaths, including 453 homicides. Workplace violence was
the second leading cause of occupational fatalities, behind transportation
incidents (2,080 deaths).
A third of the fatalities involved workers 55 and older, while those 65 or older
had a fatality rate of 9.6 per 100,000 workers. The overall fatality rate was
3.5 per 100,000 workers.
States with the highest fatality rates were Wyoming (11.5 per 100,000
workers), Alaska (9.9), North Dakota (9.6), West Virginia (7.9) and South Dakota
(6.9).

Editor's Note:
The D&D Daily's
2018 Retail Violent Fatalities report shows that there were 488
retail-related deaths that year. Of those deaths, 108 were retail associates -
20 of whom were killed in a homicide/suicide and 14 were killed by a former
co-worker or relative. So the 46 retail homicides reported in the AFL-CIO data
were loosely in line with our own reporting, which is basely only on publicly
reported data. Another similarity we found was the gender breakdown, with men
making up a large share of homicides.

In St. Paul and Minneapolis, hundreds join in second night of protests
No arrests were reported after the marches
wrapped up Thursday,
one night after 51 people were taken into custody
Protesters took to the streets for a second night Thursday to
decry the release
of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged with killing
George Floyd on May 25.
The rallies — one in St. Paul, one in Minneapolis — came on the heels of a march
Wednesday night in south Minneapolis that ended when 51 people were arrested
near the Police Department’s Fifth Precinct headquarters. As of 10:15 p.m.
Thursday, the rallies appeared to have wrapped up, and no one had been arrested.
At the St. Paul event, dubbed the Secret March, hundreds of people, including
family members of Minnesotans killed by police, marched down University Avenue
to the State Capitol. The marchers carried signs bearing the names of 100 people
killed by police in Minnesota, along with five coffins and a sign that said,
“Who will be next?”

Portland Protests: Multnomah County DA unveils tool to track arrests,
cases
The Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt unveiled a new
statistical dashboard on Tuesday that allows the public to stay informed on
cases and arrests regarding the protests in Portland. The data shows that white
people account for nine out of 10 arson charges and 94 out of 125 property
damage charges (or 75%) in cases police referred to the DA. Additionally, two-thirds
of people charged with protest-related crimes are ages 35 and under.

COVID Cases Trending Up Across All U.S. Regions
U.S. reporting more than 46,000 positive Covid-19 tests on average every day
The US is averaging more than 46,000 new Covid-19 infections each day -- up
12% from the previous week and more than double what the country was seeing in
June, as lockdown restrictions were easing.
On Thursday, the number of cases reported in the country -- 57,191 -- was the
highest in almost two months, and 10 states saw their highest seven-day
averages of new daily cases.
And where in the past just one or a few regions were experiencing a growth in
cases, infections are now on the rise across all regions.
It's a case count that experts warn is far too high, ahead of what's forecast to
be a challenging -- and deadly -- winter season. The latest US Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention ensemble forecast says US Covid-19 deaths could
reach 233,000 by the end of this month.

Teamsters Prepare To Strike Against Some SoCal Grocers
More than 4,000 Teamster warehouse workers and truck drivers that deliver food
and supplies to Southern California grocery stores are facing the possibility of
a work shutdown. Grocery supply chain workers and their employers – Albertsons
(includes Vons and Pavilions) and Kroger (includes Ralphs and Food4Less) – have
been in contract negotiations since early August. The workers’ contract expired
on Sept. 20 and both parties agreed to an extension. However, with no meaningful
progress on the key issue of health care, on Tuesday, Oct. 6, Teamster
negotiators say they had no choice but to give a 72-hour notice to cancel the
contract extension and prepare to strike.

Pandemic fears, distancing
requirements, and job losses could dampen holiday madness.
Traditional brick-and-mortar holiday shopping has been declining for a decade as
consumers flock to e-commerce, and the Covid-19 outbreak and recession will only
hasten its fall. With barely seven weeks left, merchants are scrambling to
prepare stores and websites to make up for lost time.
The holiday playbook of opening stores right after family Thanksgiving feasts,
lining the weekend with doorbuster sales, and cramming shops with inventory and
workers
has been thrown out the window.
Stores will be reconfigured, with fewer racks on the floor and service stations
spread farther apart.
Online sales will take center
stage. Supply chains will be strained like never before
as businesses try to keep up with record e-commerce purchases, with distribution
centers hiring tens of thousands more workers to package and ship orders.
“This will go down as the most
difficult holiday season to prepare for, whether you’re a retailer, a vendor, or
anything in between,” says Joel Bines, co-head of retail consulting at
AlixPartners LLP.

Curbside Pickup Emerging as Store Savior & Cabin Fever Escape
The popularity of curbside pickup reveals that the future of retail is not just
more packages piling up on people’s doorsteps. Beyond satisfying the need for
contactless shopping in the pandemic, it taps into Americans’ desire to drive to
a store, a pull that can be just as strong as, or even stronger than, the
convenience of home delivery.
“Americans are used to their cars and actually do like stores, so this is kind
of a hybrid where you’re getting the best of both worlds,” said Oliver Chen, a
retail analyst at Cowen.
As of August, about three-fourths of the top 50 store-based retailers in the
United States offered curbside pickup. Target curbside up 700%, 41% of Best
Buy's Q2 online sales.
The rise in curbside pickup, part of a larger surge in e-commerce sales, has
implications for preserving retail jobs, though workers’ duties are likely to
transform. It is also helping to keep brick-and-mortar spaces relevant when
thousands of storefronts have emptied out as more customers move online.

Only 27.9% of organizations able to maintain compliance with the PCI DSS
Global organizations continue to put their customers’ cardholder data at risk
due to a lack of long term payment security strategy and execution, flags the
Verizon report. With many companies struggling to retain qualified CISOs or
security managers, the lack of long-term security thinking is severely impacting
sustained compliance within the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI
DSS).
Cybercriminals still mostly targeting payment
data
Payment data remains one of the most sought after and lucrative targets by
cybercriminals with 9 out of 10 data breaches being financially motivated, as
highlighted by the report. Within the retail sector alone, 99 percent of
security incidents were focused on acquiring payment data for criminal use.
On average only 27.9 percent of global organizations maintained full compliance
with the PCI DSS, which was developed to help businesses that offer card payment
facilities protect their payment systems from breaches and theft of cardholder
data.
More concerning, this is the third successive year that a decline in compliance
has occurred with a 27.5 percentage point drop since compliance peaked in 2016.

Number of corporate credentials exposed on the dark web increased by 429%
While there has been a year-over-year decrease in publicly disclosed data
breaches, an Arctic Wolf report reveals that the number of corporate credentials
with plaintext passwords on the dark web has increased by 429 percent since
March.
For a typical organization, this means there are now, on average, 17 sets of
corporate credentials available on the dark web that could be used by hackers.
With access to just one corporate account, attackers can easily execute account
takeover attacks, which allow them to move laterally within an organization’s
corporate network and gain access to sensitive data, intellectual property,
competitive information, or funds.

National Security Agency launches the Center for Cybersecurity Standards
The National Security Agency announced the official launch of the
Center for Cybersecurity Standards (CCSS) in the Cybersecurity Directorate. This office
will lead NSA’s Cybersecurity mission to engage with standards bodies to
communicate security requirements and influence standards to secure our National
Security Systems and provide support to the Defense Industrial Base (DIB).
As the U.S. Government relies increasingly on commercial products to secure

Amazon Pushes for More Covid-19 Disclosures. Companies Say No.
Amazon
last week called on other large companies to
share the results of their
workplace Covid-19 testing and disclose the rate at which employees are
quarantining. So far,
their answer appears to be no.
U.S. companies are in the midst of an unprecedented effort to prevent and
quickly contain outbreaks as they bring more staff back to
factories, restaurants,
offices and entertainment studios.
Companies including
Walmart Inc, Ford Motor Co.,
Kroger Co. and Smithfield Foods Inc.
have provided Covid-19 diagnostic testing to workers with varying degrees of
regularity. Some employees are tested daily and others every week. Some firms
ship swabs to the homes of employees who fear they have been infected, while
others host on-site testing.
Many companies are loath to share their results publicly beyond what they must
relay to public health agencies because they aren’t required to.
Some find publishing the
information burdensome and don’t want to open themselves up to criticism
if trends take a turn for the worse, testing advisers say.

Walmart signs trio of drone deals as it races to play catch-up with Amazon

Morgan is one of many Americans who have had a Walmart package dropped off at
his home during the
coronavirus pandemic. Yet his delivery did not fit the typical mold. A drone
flew overhead and dropped a bag in his front lawn. Inside, there was an
at-home Covid-19 test kit.
The aerial delivery in Morgan’s Las Vegas neighborhood is part of
a new effort by Walmart to
understand how drones could expand its on-demand deliveries
and help it better compete
with Amazon.
Over the past month, Walmart has announced three deals with drone operators to
test different uses for the drones. It’s
teamed up with Flytrex to
deliver groceries and
household essentials
in Fayetteville, North
Carolina. It
plans to launch another pilot project with Zipline, a company best known for
its medical drone deliveries in African countries like Ghana and Rwanda, for
on-demand deliveries of health and wellness products early next year. And it’s
testing deliveries of at-home Covid-19 test kits with Quest Diagnostics and
DroneUp in Las Vegas and Cheektowaga, a suburb of Buffalo, New York.

Staples To Pilot A Drop-Off Program For Easier E-Commerce Returns
Office supply chain Staples is
following the lead of retailers like Kohl’s and is planning to use its stores as
drop-off locations for returns of goods sold by other online brands.
Staples is partnering with returns and reverse logistics tech firm Optoro to
allow consumers to bring returns to the more than 1,000 Staples stores in this
country, and get credit for returned items through a QR code on their phones.

Organized Cybercrime That
Included Stores Merchandise
Chinese Nationals Involved in $1.1 Million Gift Card Fraud Scheme
ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Two Chinese nationals involved in a $1.1 million fraud scheme
involving gift cards, have both pleaded guilty and one has been sentenced for
their respective roles in the conspiracy.
According to court documents, Yuchen Zhang, 23, of Manassas, and Shouming Sun,
41, of Herndon, were part of a wire fraud conspiracy in which members of the
conspiracy contacted victims by telephone or through social media and assumed
fictitious identities. The conspirators falsely claimed to be from the Internal
Revenue Service or an employee of a financial institution, and falsely told
victims they were entitled to money or under some form of immediate financial
threat, such as having their personal identification information compromised by
known criminals. The co-conspirators used these ruses and others to
trick the victims into purchasing gift cards and then sending to them the gift
cards’ redemption codes. The redemption codes allow the gift cards to be
redeemed without being in possession of the physical card. Zhang, Sun and others
then used the fraudulently obtained redemption codes to purchase goods totaling
approximately $1.15 million.
Sun was sentenced today to
seven months in prison. Zhang pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison when sentenced on Feb. 10,
2021.

Port Jervis, NY: Hudson Valley Man Found With Drugs, Cash, Stolen Goods
A
Hudson Valley man is free without bail after police allegedly found large
quantities of drugs, cash and stolen property in his home. On Thursday, Orange
County District Attorney David M. Hoovler and Port Jervis Police Chief William
Worden announced the arrest of a suspect and the recovery of large quantities of
narcotics, cash and stolen property. Vinny Hannon, 24, of Port Jervis, was
arrested after police executed a search warrant in his apartment. Hannon was
charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession
of marijuana and criminal possession of stolen property.
The search of the apartment revealed a number of drugs and related items, police
say, including: 91 glassine envelopes of heroin or fentanyl;1 gram of crack
cocaine;1 gram of powder cocaine;2 pounds of marijuana;111 Oxycodone pills;51
Oxycontin pills;3 Xanax pills; A pill press, drug-packaging materials, and
scales. Police also
allegedly recovered from the apartment over $38,000 in cash and approximately
$20,000 worth of stolen retail merchandise, still in its packages, which Hannon
is alleged to have exchanged during narcotics purchases.

Folsom, CA: Walgreens heist leads to pursuit, 3 felony arrests
A
mad dash to pilfer a Folsom Walgreens of cosmetic merchandise last Friday
evening resulted in the arrest of three women who have been charged with
multiple felonies. Shortly after 8 p.m. last Friday, the Folsom Police dispatch
center received a report of a theft in progress at Walgreens, on Riley St. The
reporting party told dispatchers that three female subjects had quickly filled
large trash bags with more than $1,000 worth of cosmetic products and fled. Upon
getting the call, Folsom Police officers quickly located the vehicle on Highway
50. During what was considered a high-risk vehicle stop, the Nissan fled from
officers, leading them on an approximately 20-mile pursuit, reaching speeds over
120 mph. The pursuit came to an end when the suspects’ vehicle caused a
collision on Highway 50. The collision resulted in a pregnant mother being sent
to the hospital where they were reported to be OK and later released.
Officers recovered more than
$4,000 worth of stolen merchandise, along with several thousand dollars in
additional product stolen from a Walgreens location in Citrus Heights earlier
the same night.

Foxboro, MA: CVS Shoplifter was fleeing Police; Go Fund Me created for 74 year
old man’s medical bills after being seriously injured, his dog was killed
The
man seriously injured in a head-on collision with a car carrying shoplifting
suspects allegedly attempting to elude police is recovering but his pet dog,
also seriously injured, had to be euthanized, the victim’s lawyer said
Wednesday. Edward Fitzpatrick, 74, of a self-employed plumber who lives in
Walpole, suffered multiple leg fractures and a ruptured aorta in the crash
Sunday but is recovering at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, his lawyer, Mike
Santo of Bellmore, N.Y., said. Sadly, his 7-year-old Australian Shepherd Cate
was left paralyzed by injuries she suffered in the crash on North Street, Santo
said, adding that Fitzpatrick raised Cate from a puppy.
Meanwhile, a Go Fund Me account has been created to pay for medical bills for
Cate and help pay for medical bills for Fitzpatrick which are expected to exceed
his insurance. Fitzpatrick is facing the likelihood of more surgery, Santo said.
Police say Fitzgerald’s truck was struck head on by a car driven by a New York
City man while allegedly speeding after a shoplifting incident at CVS at Patriot
Place on Route 1. Since it was created Tuesday, the

has raised over $18,000.
Meanwhile, police said Wednesday during an ongoing investigation police now
believe the driver of
the car and his passenger were involved in not only the CVS shoplifting but
numerous other retail pharmacy thefts all over New England and up and down the
East Coast. They were
targeting expensive over the counter name brand medications, as well as
fragrances, and personal health items, according to a press release.
A search warrant executed on
the suspects’ vehicle yielded over 311 items, valued at over $9,500 in pharmacy
merchandise, as well as tools and items commonly used by retail theft rings,
according to police.

Rome, GA: Trading Company business owner received over $14,000 in stolen
property
A West Rome business owner accused of receiving thousands of dollars worth of
stolen music equipment was released from jail Thursday on bond. According to
Floyd County Jail reports and warrants: Earl Lamar Renfroe Jr., 40, retained a
variety of music equipment including Gibson Les Paul and Fender Telecaster
guitars, Peavy and B-52 amplifiers and other microphones, cords and cables. The
equipment was located by Floyd County police inside Renfro’s business, the West
Rome Trading Co., and had a total combined value of over $14,000. Renfroe was
arrested Wednesday and charged with felony theft by receiving stolen property as
part of what the FCPD says is an ongoing, multi-county investigation.

19-year-old robbery suspect is dead and a store clerk and customer are
recovering in hospitals after a shooting at a convenience store in northeast
Columbus early Friday morning, police said. A 911 caller reported shots were
fired during a robbery at the Beechcroft Newsstand located on E.
Dublin-Granville Road shortly after 1 a.m., according to a dispatcher. Juanye
Hawkins-Payne, one of the robbery suspects, died at Riverside Methodist
Hospital. Store clerk Hamad Mobarak and customer Victor H. Mendez, 29, were
taken to area hospitals where they are expected to recover. Police arrested and
charged robbery suspect Daythan Jones, 20, with murder. Janiece N. Prowell-Bias,
18, was also charged with murder.

Richmond, KY: One man shot and killed during burglary; EKU placed on lock-down
One man is dead after a shooting that sent Eastern Kentucky University’s main
campus into lockdown for a short time. It happened around 1:45 a.m. Friday on
Main Street in Richmond. According to the Richmond Police Department, officers
were called out for a burglary at an apartment underneath the Visiting Angels
store on East Main Street. Police say two people were inside the apartment when
a man tried to break in and shots ended up being fired.

Orlando, FL: Arrest made in connection with shooting outside of Mall at Millenia
The Mall at Millenia is expected to open as scheduled Friday at 11 a.m.,
according to its website, after shots were fired outside the mall Thursday
evening. Early Friday morning, Orlando police said they made one arrest in
connection with the shooting. The suspect has been identified as Trey'von
Graham, 19. He's facing charges of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm
and discharging a firearm in public. Investigators said no other additionals
suspects were being sought. The Orlando Police Department said off-duty officers
were working inside the mall at around 6 p.m. when they heard the gunshots and
responded to the food court entrance. OPD Deputy Chief Eric Smith said, “[The
officers] responded to the training, engaged the suspects and took them down
without incident.” Initially, police said they took four people into custody.

pleading guilty to charges of impersonating a firefighter at a local wildfire

Competition is a good thing because it's what has made America so strong.
Whether it's competition between companies or between executives, it has a
