Pinkerton to appear for hearing into hiring of unlicensed security guard charged
in deadly shooting
Isborn Security Services has surrendered its license for the hiring of an
unlicensed security guard involved in a deadly Oct. 10 shooting in Denver.
Pinkerton
Consulting and Investigations is slated to appear before the Denver Department
of Excise and Licenses for a hearing into what led up to the hiring of an
unlicensed security guard, 30-year-old Matthew
Dolloff, who is now charged with second-degree murder for the death of a man at
dueling Denver rallies.
Wednesday's hearing is slated to begin at 9 a.m. Dolloff is slated to be
arraigned on Feb. 19 and is currently out on a $500,000 bond. During a previous
court appearance, an attorney representing Dolloff called his actions
self-defense.
Dolloff is accused of fatally shooting 49-year-old Lee Keltner outside the
Denver Art Museum. It happened near the end of two dueling demonstrations
that included members of Black Lives Matter as well as people attending what
they dubbed a "Patriot Muster."
Dolloff was contracted through Pinkerton by 9NEWS. It has been the
practice of 9NEWS for a number of months to contract private security to
accompany staff at protests.
Witnesses said Keltner was seen holding a bottle of OC spray before he hit
Dolloff on the side of the head with an open hand, the PC statement says.
Dolloff then took a gun out of his waistband and fired one shot at the same time
Keltner sprayed the OC spray, according to the PC statement.

Portland riots caused at least $2.3M in damage to federal buildings in city
For weeks, the Mark O. Hatfield United States Courthouse was a ground zero for
protesters in downtown Portland, drawing hundreds to thousands of protesters
night after night. At one point, demonstrators shattered the glass on the doors
and threw fireworks into the building. The building's façade and entry were
covered with graffiti. Federal officials said they also must repair or replace
mounted security cameras and access control devices that people had vandalized
or stolen. Now the bill has come due for the cleanup, U.S. Attorney Billy
Williams said Tuesday. It amounts to $2.3 million so far for cleaning the
courthouse and four other federal properties.

NRF Calls on Congress to Move Quickly with COVID-19 Relief
The
National Retail Federation today issued the following statement from President
and CEO Matthew Shay as the House and Senate debate next steps for COVID-19
relief:
"Retailers have been at the forefront of calling on Congress and our elected
leaders to move quickly, decisively and in a bipartisan manner to get economic
relief to individuals, families and businesses to help relieve the financial
stress they have been facing the past 10 months. Equally important are efforts
to ensure that states and municipalities have whatever tools are necessary to
equitably get the COVID-19 vaccines distributed in their communities so people
can get back to work and children can safely return to school.
"As our retailers have been on the front lines of this pandemic since the
beginning, they are once again ready to serve our government at all levels to
provide whatever helps ensure that vaccines get administered into the arms of as
many citizens as quickly and safely as possible. Our elected officials must
prioritize this imperative as the virus begins to mutate and more people are at
risk, and take whatever steps are necessary to support legislation and policies
that address that necessity."

CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens to offer COVID-19 vaccines at stores in certain states
The nation's two leading drug chains on Tuesday both announced plans to bring
COVID-19 vaccinations to the retail setting in multiple states. CVS Pharmacy
said that on Feb. 11 it would begin offering COVID-19 vaccines at stores
in 11 states, with its initial supply of roughly 250,000 doses coming from
the federal government. Walgreens said vaccinations would begin Feb. 12 at
locations in 12 states, as well as Puerto Rico, New York City and Chicago.
Both companies noted that the vaccines would be available only to eligible
patient populations based on state and jurisdiction guidelines.

U.K.'s Rapid Covid-19 Vaccination Campaign Shows Early Signs of Success
Indications raise hopes over how soon the U.K. will be able to reopen its
ravaged economy
The U.K.'s fast-paced vaccination drive is showing early signs of curbing
Covid-19 infections, government scientific advisers say, a promising litmus test
of how a mass inoculation campaign in a developed nation can slowly turn the
tide on the virus.
Britain moved quicker than any other European nation to both approve and
deploy Covid-19 vaccines, injecting nearly 15% of its population in just
over two months in an enormous logistical operation. It has doled out more than
nine million shots in locations as varied as clinics, cathedrals and
racecourses. The U.S. in comparison has inoculated 9% of its population.
"The preliminary data looks promising and our confidence in the data will get
better as more time passes,"
In a further positive signal, scientists at the University of Oxford said
preliminary research showed the vaccine developed with AstraZeneca PLC
caused a reduction in transmission of the virus by 67% after a single dose.

Signs of vaccinations paying off emerge in Minnesota
A drop in COVID-19 cases among congregate care residents in Minnesota might be
the first encouraging sign that the state's mass vaccination efforts are
starting to pay off.
Last week's average of 64 cases per day among these residents was the lowest
since September, said Kris Ehresmann, state infectious disease director. Surveys
showed that 81% of the most vulnerable residents of nursing homes opted for the
two-dose COVID-19 vaccine, and 13% have completed the series.
Vaccine seems to be having a positive effect," she said, "In the weeks ahead, we
think we will be able to say that with greater confidence."

Minnesota COVID-19 positivity lowest since July
Roughly one in 50 Minnesotans have completed two-dose series of COVID-19
vaccine.
Minnesota's positivity rate of diagnostic COVID-19 testing dropped to 4.3%, the
lowest rate since July 1 that underscores the state's opportunity to vaccinate
more people at a low point in the pandemic.
The decline was reported by the Minnesota Department of Health on Wednesday
along with 24 more COVID-19 deaths and 669 newly diagnosed infections with the
novel coronavirus that causes the disease. The rate, an average of testing
results in the seven days ending Jan. 25, represents a sharp decline from a peak
of 15.5% on Nov. 10.

N.Y.C.'s Covid Metrics Are Dire. Cuomo Is Reopening Restaurants Anyway.
Mr. Cuomo said Friday that "on our current trajectory," New York City could
reopen indoor dining on Feb. 14, typically a busy day for the restaurant
industry.
As the governor spoke, average per-capita case counts in New York City were
64 percent higher than when he announced an indefinite
ban on indoor dining in December.
Average Covid-19 hospitalizations in the city, while trending downward, were
still 60 percent higher late last week than they were when Mr. Cuomo closed the
restaurants.
Mr. Cuomo has said that the decision to open any part of the economy is based on
four metrics: new cases per capita, hospitalizations, the test positivity rate
and the rate at which people are infecting one another.

Re-Post: OSHA updates coronavirus guidance;
mandates still on the table
Many U.S. employers have already been taking measures in coronavirus
pandemic-related prevention programs for almost a year, Susan Harthill, partner
at Morgan Lewis. "The new guidelines, therefore, largely track current
practices," Harthill said.
Some guidelines are new, "including the statement that face coverings may
protect the wearer (another reason to encourage mask-wearing), a recommendation
on supporting vaccines for employees, a recommendation not to test someone who
has had COVID-19 in the last 90 days, and some return-to-work criteria,"
Harthill said. The new guidance also notes that other, shorter quarantine
periods may be used in conjunction with other measures, though it still
emphasizes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's 14-day quarantine
recommendation for close contacts, she added.

Hero Pay Ordinances Popping Up on West Coast
Pitting Unions Against Retailers
L.A. - Oakland - Montebello - Seattle - Santa Monica - CA Passing $5 'Hero Pay'
for Drug Store & Grocery Store Employees this Week
The California Grocers Assn., which represents about 6,000 stores across
the state, filed a lawsuit against Long Beach in federal court.
Seattle and Santa Monica have already moved forward with hazard pay. The
L.A. County Board of Supervisors is also
expected to vote soon on a similar plan.
United Food and Commercial Workers International, which represents 1.3
million workers in grocery, meatpacking, and other front-line industries, is
spearheading the pay increase push.
The cascade of local ordinances around hazard pay in Seattle and several
California cities is "just the beginning," UFCW International President
Marc Perrone said in a statement.
The group is also urging Congress to enact legislation around hazard pay for
front-line essential workers and calling on CEOs of major food and retail
companies to provide pay boosts.

Kroger to shut two Long Beach stores due to local $4 hero pay mandate
Planned Ralphs, Food 4 Less closings highlight issue of pandemic compensation
for frontline grocery workers.
The Kroger Co. is closing two supermarkets in Long Beach, Calif., because of a
new municipal law that mandates hazard pay to grocery workers amid the
COVID-19 pandemic.
The
Long Beach ordinance (Ord-27), passed by the city council in December and
enacted Jan. 19, requires grocery retailers to establish "premium pay" of an
extra $4 per hour to wage-earning store associates for a period of at least 120
days. Store managers or supervisors aren't covered by the mandate. The ordinance
explained that added pay to grocery workers is warranted because they perform a
key public function amid a high level of exposure to COVID-19.
Los Angeles-based Ralphs and Food 4 Less described the affected stores as
underperforming and criticized the Long Beach ordinance's premium pay
mandate as "imbalanced."
"As a result of the city of Long Beach's decision to pass an ordinance mandating
extra pay for grocery workers, we have made the difficult decision to
permanently close long-struggling store locations in Long Beach," a company
spokesperson said in a statement.

Coalition of Law Enforcement and Retail Joins Buy Safe America Coalition
CLEAR Joins Coalition to Combat the Sale of Fraudulent & Counterfeit Goods
Online
Washington,
DC - The Buy Safe
America Coalition, a diverse group of retailers, consumer groups,
wholesaler-distributors, and manufacturers who support efforts to combat
organized retail crime and protect consumers and communities from the sale of
counterfeit and stolen goods, announced its newest member -
The Coalition of
Law Enforcement and Retail (CLEAR).
As a non-profit, non-partisan national association of Law Enforcement Retail
Loss Prevention professionals, CLEAR works to build and support efforts to
improve the safety of communities. CLEAR joins the coalition as organized retail
crime, which refers to criminal networks that steal merchandise in mass
quantities from storefronts and sell those goods online, continues to increase.
CLEAR will take part in the coalition alongside existing members including
Walgreens, CVS Health, The Home Depot, Rite Aid, Ulta Beauty, DICK's Sporting
Goods, HP Inc., OpSec Security, and Philips.
The opportunity for organized retail crime groups to resell stolen merchandise
has experienced some difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The use of
digital platforms to sell stolen merchandise has grown exponentially in recent
years, and with traditional shops and markets closed, many criminals have
further expanded their online channels to sell stolen products.
Despite the increasing sales of stolen and fraudulent goods online, e-commerce
marketplaces have not taken sufficient action to solve the problem. The Buy Safe
America Coalition is urging Congress to pass the INFORM Consumers Act,
which addresses this issue by requiring online marketplaces to collect and
verify basic seller information and having sellers provide that information to
consumers.
"The consequences of organized retail crime are severe. Profits from the sale of
stolen and counterfeit goods have been closely linked to criminal organizations
involved in other serious crimes including terrorism and human and drug
trafficking," said Ben Dugan, CLEAR President.
"The INFORM Act is a commonsense measure that will help address the growing
problem and consequences of organized retail crime by increasing transparency
and accountability on online marketplaces."

The Need for Chief Risk Officers
While many organizations understand the need for a security executive,
organizations that have taken a holistic approach, have added the chief risk
officer (CRO) position to evaluate all organizational risk. After speaking with
academics, experts and executives in the risk and security field, I have found
an increasing interest toward risk identification and mitigation and identified
key factors in developing the ideal role and finding the perfect candidate for
any enterprise.
The CRO takes a higher-level approach than the chief security officer (CSO),
who is tasked with overseeing the physical and/or cybersecurity of an
organization. The CRO looks at all aspects of risk and how it may affect an
organization. This includes physical security and cybersecurity, but also may
include financial, insurance, reputational and other risks.
Currently, only about 2,000 CROs exist in the U.S., according to
Bloomberg, but as of this summer, "their ranks already have grown by 5% since
last year." Additionally, many companies do not have someone specifically
titled a CRO, but instead have a vice president of risk management, a risk
committee, or another executive, such as a CSO, pulling double duty.
How a CRO can Improve Your Organization
Traditionally, the CRO position sat most often in the financial world; however
other organizations are seeing the need for an executive solely focused on risk
identification and management. "Financial services and healthcare have led the
way" with prioritizing risk management, Trowbridge shares. "It depends on the
size and complexity of other industries whether you see the chief risk officer
really becoming a real role."

How can racial bias be removed from retail stores?
According
to a new study, "Racial
Bias In Retail," commissioned by Sephora, two in five U.S. shoppers have
personally experienced unfair treatment on the basis of their race or skin tone.
The perception of bias is said to be particularly prevalent among Black
shoppers.
Among races, 53 percent of Black shoppers felt such unfair treatment versus 36
percent for LatinXers, 35 percent for Asians and 24 percent for whites. The
study was conducted over a year-long period, from fall 2019 until late 2020.
Retail shoppers who have experienced mistreatment in-store were found to be
three times more likely to say it happened while they were browsing than at
checkout (38 percent vs. 12 percent)
To avoid feeling underserved or ignored Black, indigenous or people of color,
BIPOC, customers say they often dress nicely or interact with employees to make
it known they are interested in spending money. To avoid feeling watched or
to avoid theft accusations, they adjust their body language and leave purses or
bags at home.
Sephora has rolled out a number of
actions to curb racial bias in the in-store experience:
● Rolling out a new greeting system across stores to ensure a consistent
experience for visitors upon entry;
● Creating new training modules for associates to define what behaviors
will not be tolerated;
● Delineating recovery responsibilities to loss prevention specialists to
enable associates to focus solely on client service;
● Reducing the presence of third-party security by replacing them with
in-house professionals;
● Implementing new feedback mechanisms;
● Establishing a D&I (diversity & inclusivity) in-store experience
dashboard to provide analytics on client service and feedback for monthly
checks.

Celebrating Black History Month
How Brands & Retailers Are Tackling Diversity in Their Organizations
Following a year marked by national unrest over racial inequity, a number of

Beyond product launches and collaborations with Black talent, retailers are

millions of dollars in product and funds to nonprofits, addressing

As the country observes the start of Black History Month, here's how retail
players are bringing more attention to the many contributions - fashion and
otherwise - of the Black community:

Group of Retailers in Spain Stole Millions
From U.S. Banks
105 arrested for stealing over $14.4M U.S. from US-based banks
A
cross-border 8 month long operation coordinated by Europol and led by the
Spanish National Police (Policía Nacional) and the US Secret Service resulted in
the dismantling of an organized crime group involved in fraud and money
laundering.
The criminal organization, mainly formed of Greek nationals, set up shell
companies in the United States and opened bank accounts for these companies.
To gain the trust of the financial institutions, members of the criminal network
made transfers to the US-based accounts from different locations in the
EU. Based on this trust, the American-based banks issued debit and credit cards
for these accounts. A group of retailers in on the scam,
most of whom were in Spain, used the payment cards to
finance the available credited amounts on the cards. To launder the
stolen funds, they transferred them to different bank accounts, owned by
members of the criminal network located in several EU countries. More than 50
American financial institutions became victims of these fraudulent activities
losing over 12 million euros.
Europol and law enforcement carried out more than 88 house searches, arrested
105 suspects and seized 14 luxury cars. The follow up actions led to the freeze
of 87 bank accounts worth $1.5M U.S.

How Recruiting Women Can Help Solve Security's Biggest Problems
There are simply
not enough cybersecurity experts in the global market to manage the growing
number and range of cyber-risks out there.
It's clear that COVID-19 made these talent problems more acute. The sudden shift
to remote work accelerated the expansion of the attack surface through a
precipitous rise of Internet of Things (IoT) and connected devices. Meanwhile,
cybercriminals redoubled their efforts to lob phishing, ransomware, and other
attacks against the newly distributed workforce. This combination of an
overwhelming expansion of the attack surface and threat volume increases
pressure on already strained security professionals, strengthening the need for
reinforcements to help them fight the good fight.
Early studies show that the effects of COVID have
disproportionately affected women's career and economic wellbeing. This
may be the perfect moment to plan a dramatic, strategic shift in how
companies attract, recruit, and retain a new and expanded generation of
cybersecurity rock stars.
An Opportunity to Reduce Risk
As vaccines come available and the world recovers, the post-COVID era will be
an opportunity to recruit more women to cybersecurity careers at all levels.
By focusing on reengagement campaigns with women and training
female professionals seeking to reenter the workforce,
cybersecurity organizations may be able to kick-start momentum in recruiting
women into the field. Hopefully, these gains can snowball into more outreach to
girls as they progress through school and enter the workforce.

Shoplifting Down 47% - But Business Break-Ins
Increased
Overall crime dropped during Covid-19, StatsCan says
However, data reveal
concerns about mental health and online fraud
The Covid-19 pandemic has been a drop in crime, according to new data from
Statistics Canada; however, demand for mental health checks and other sorts of
police service calls rose.
The national statistical agency said that, in the first eight months of the
pandemic (March through October), police reported that criminal incidents
dropped by 18% compared with the same period in 2019.
Reports of most forms of crime dropped, StatsCan said, including robbery,
assault and sexual assault.
StatsCan reported that there was a general decline in violent crime reported
during the pandemic, and that property crime dropped too, with
shoplifting down 47%, residential break-and-enters
dropping 27% and auto theft down 18%.
However, reports of business break-ins increased
during the pandemic. It also reported that cyberattacks and pandemic-related
fraud have been prevalent.
StatsCan said that, according to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, a total of
5,411 victims lost over $6.6 million due to Covid-related fraud in the March to
October period.
It also said that 42% of Canadians have experienced at least one type of
cybersecurity incident since the beginning of the pandemic, including

COVID Update
Lockdowns Lifted in Manitoba
Relaxed restrictions in effect for retailers & hair salons
For more than two months, code red restrictions have forced Manitobans to
stick to the essentials, and for some businesses that meant closing their doors
altogether. But on Saturday, some were able to welcome customers again.
On
Thursday, the province announced it would be relaxing restrictions, with new
public health orders coming into effect Saturday. They allow barbershops and
hair salons to operate at 25 per cent capacity.
Retail businesses are also allowed to operate at 25 per cent capacity,
while non-essential items can be sold again.
Director of Government Relations Prairie Region for the Retail Council of
Canada, John Graham, said the health orders in place in Manitoba were complex
for retailers and consumers. He said the ability to reopen is a big relief. The
relaxed health restrictions haven’t impacted Manitoba restaurants, they’re
still limited to offering takeout and delivery.

Employees Cut Amid Ongoing COVID Lockdowns
Hudson's Bay permanently laying off more than 600 workers across Canada
Hudson's Bay Co. is permanently laying off more than 600 workers across Canada
amid ongoing store closures due to COVID-19 lockdowns. Nearly half the
company's department stores remain temporarily closed, said Tiffany Bourre,
a spokeswoman for the iconic retailer.
The permanent layoffs represent less than five per cent of the company's
total workforce, Bourre said. She added that it was "an incredibly tough
decision" and that HBC is committed to treating each individual affected with
fairness and respect during these difficult times.

Shutout by allies, Canada will produce its own vaccines by the end of 2021
Canada says it has signed a tentative agreement with US vaccine firm Novavax to
produce millions of doses of its Covid-19 vaccine candidate at a facility in
Montreal. The agreement, announced Tuesday by Canadian Prime Minister Justin
Trudeau, is the first of several being developed as Canada says it intends to
repatriate vaccine production for decades to come.
Novavax is still doing clinical trials of its vaccine but submitted more data to
Health Canada for review Friday. Canada has an agreement to buy 52 million
doses from Novavax when and if its vaccine candidate receives Canadian
approval.

Secret Nygard videos show former fashion mogul charged with sex trafficking
travelling with teenage girl
Hours
of behind-the-scenes video shot by a whistleblower show former Canadian
fashion mogul Peter Nygard, who is alleged to have abused women and girls for
decades, screaming at his employees and approaching a 16-year-old girl at the
London Olympics.
Nygard has been held in jail since
his arrest last month, but is fighting to be released on bail, with a
decision expected soon. At a hearing in a Winnipeg court on Thursday, Nygard's
lawyers
presented a new bail plan that includes round-the-clock surveillance of
their client.
Feralio, who was based in Los Angeles when he worked for Nygard, came forward
and shared the video with CBC as part of an investigation into Nygard by The
Fifth Estate and the podcast, Evil By Design. "If I don't expose him, he's
going to get away with all the things that he's been doing," Feralio said.
“When I first was hired, Nygard told me that the reason why Jesus is so popular
is because he had a good PR team,” Feralio told CBC News, which aired some of
the footage as part of its “The Fifth Estate” series into Nygard’s alleged sex
crimes, according to the outlet. “My job was to film literally everything.”
He added, “Nobody else in my world of Nygard has this evidence.”.

Canada's Retail Staffing Crisis Grows as
People Flee Big Cities
Mounting Retail Staffing Crisis in Canada Requires As Talent Pool Thins
“Retailers are approaching the pinnacle of crisis with respect to the staffing
of their stores and operations,” she asserts. “The biggest challenge they
currently face is a lack of potential staff to recruit from. That might
seem contradictory given the numbers of people who have been laid off in the
past year, leading some people to think that there must be thousands of
applicants responding to each job posting.
But the reverse is actually happening. And there are a multitude of reasons that
help explain why. One of the biggest influences effecting this trend is the
mass exodus of people from urban centres who have left to live elsewhere,
outside of the city. And as we all know most major retail is concentrated in
these urban centres across the country. It’s taken away from the population-base
that retailers draw from in each of these cities, depleting the pool of
talent in those areas.”
According to recently released data from
Statistics Canada,
a record number of Canadians moved away from Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver
— the country’s three largest cities. In fact, between July 2019 and July 2020,
an estimated 87,444 city-dwellers gave up their urban digs for the slower and,
presumably safer, settings of the suburbs, smaller towns, and rural areas.retail-insider.com

Winnipeg, MB: Officer cleared in fatal shooting of liquor store robbery suspect
A
Winnipeg police officer who shot and killed a 16-year-old girl following a
Liquor Mart robbery last April has been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing.
The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba released a report Thursday
on its probe into the April 8, 2020, death of 16-year-old Eishia Hudson. The
girl was shot and killed following a pursuit, in which police say she drove a
vehicle involved in a liquor store robbery in Winnipeg's Sage Creek
neighbourhood earlier that day. During its investigation, the IIU talked with 14
civilian witnesses — including three of the four passengers in the vehicle
driven by Hudson, in addition to reviewing forensic evidence, and audio
recordings of a 911 call and Winnipeg police radio transmissions.

Counterfeits & the Online 'Crime Triangle'
Attention Consumers: You Are The Key To Staying Safe Online
The convenience of shopping online has been overtaken as the primary driver of
rising rates of Internet commerce, replaced by consumers’ need to obtain
essential goods and services without exposing themselves to potential COVID-19
infection risks. However, the increasing amount of online shopping being done by
consumers is also exposing them to burgeoning risks posed by counterfeit
products.
Criminal
schemes like online counterfeiting persist because consumers are tricked into
becoming entangled with criminals on websites and through social media
platforms that have come to form the center of our social and shopping
activities. E-commerce platforms represent indescribably large ‘locations’
wherein consumers looking for products continually interact with product
sellers, both legitimate and illegitimate. For counterfeiters, the only things
they need to complete their illicit activities are to gain access to consumers
perusing various product listings, and effectively evade the anti-counterfeiting
activities undertaken by e-commerce sites. This relationship between
counterfeiters, consumers and e-commerce platforms can be summarized as a stable
criminal opportunity structure, one that is easily represented by a crime
triangle.
The crime triangle based upon the criminological theory of
routine activities. It is used as a device to help visualize and describe
the relationships that exist among key elements (a motivated offender, suitable
target, and place lacking capable guardianship) that are necessary for many
forms of crime to develop. While the crime triangle is not applicable to all
forms of crime, i t applies well to online product counterfeiting.
Importantly, it highlights the role of consumers as potential victims who must
interact with counterfeiters within a poorly guarded space in order for
victimization to occur. Consumers have no influence over the presence of
counterfeiters on e-commerce platforms. The ubiquity of counterfeiting and the
rise of e-commerce nearly guarantee that counterfeiters will continue to operate
online. So long as consumers go on to e-commerce platforms looking for products
they are almost guaranteed to have some interaction with product counterfeiters
who are advertising illicit goods.
Consumers have a say in product counterfeiting schemes and those
consumers wishing to avoid being a victim of counterfeiting and help to
destabilize the online product counterfeiting crime triangle. By engaging in
self-guardianship behavior consumers take on an active role in protecting
themselves while they are online, something that is tied to the choices
consumers make that can reduce their exposure to criminal elements.

Amazon posts a 'monster' Q4 with pandemic still driving demand
Amazon finished out 2020 on another blockbuster quarter, with its North
American
sales rising more than 40% year over year to $75.3 billion as shoppers
turned to the e-commerce giant during a surge in COVID-19 and disruptions to
holiday shipping.
The company said it had a record-breaking holiday season, which included 50%
year-over-year sales growth for independent sellers on its Marketplace. Sales by
independent sellers topped $4.8 billion between Black Friday and Cyber Monday,
up 60% from 2019.
Amazon chief and founder Jeff Bezos announced his plans to
step out of the CEO role on a high note. That includes a record holiday
season — helped along by
moving Prime Day to October — and a year that pushed its North American
sales up 38.4% to $236.3 billion. All that growth, however, wasn't cheap or pain
free by any means.
Part to the strength was Amazon's third-party platform, which accounted for
55% of units sold across Amazon's site. The company's fulfillment and
logistics network grew about 50% year over year in 2020,

Cumberland County PA: Accused Best Buy robbers spurred 25-mile, two-county chase
that ended in York area
A group of teenage Maryland shoplifters — who graduated to robbery by assaulting
store customers trying to stop them — led police on a 25-mile, two-county chase
that ended along Interstate 83 in York County when state troopers disabled their
stolen vehicle, police allege. The group went into the Best Buy on Carlisle Pike
in Silver Spring Township a little after 2 p.m. Jan. 17, according to Silver
Spring Township Police Chief Christopher Raubenstine. That's in Cumberland
County. "They all went right to the laptop computer display areas. Each went to
a different laptop, like they were looking at them," Raubenstine told The York
Dispatch. "It was very coordinated. Clearly they had done this before." They
stole whatever else they could easily grab as they fled, Raubenstine said, which
amounted to about $13,000 in merchandise. The crew also caused about $6,000
worth of damage to the store, he said.

stores were in Modesto, with one also in Denair and another in Riverbank. The
Modesto Police Department said Sen would gain entry to the stores by smashing
windows or using power tools to cut through the doors, resulting in expensive
repairs for the businesses. Once inside the store Sen and his accomplices
would usually steal cigarettes, according to the police department.

Liberty, OH: Electronics shoplifting suspect arrested on felony warrants
Police arrested a man on a couple of felony warrants during a shoplifting
investigation at Walmart in Liberty. Investigators were called there last
Wednesday afternoon for a report that a man put two televisions and a
PlayStation into a shopping cart and tried to push it out the door without
paying. A Walmart employee told police that the suspect, identified in a police
report as 21-year-old Jayshawn Sutton, was stopped by a greeter, who asked him
for his receipt. The employee said Sutton instead gave the greeter a receipt
from McDonald’s and then shoved past security, leaving the cart behind.
Police stopped Sutton behind Taco Bell and said he was found with a new iPhone,
which was still in the box. Police said he was also found to have warrants for
his arrest on a parole violation, felony receiving stolen property charge in
Mahoning County and felony possession of dangerous drugs charge in Portage
County. He also faces a theft charge for the incident.

Wyandotte, MI: Increase in Shoplifting since Face Masks have become the norm
Experts agree that covering your mouth and nose with a mask helps stop the
spread of COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends
that people wear masks in public settings and when around people outside their
household, especially when other social distancing measures are difficult to
maintain. The science behind mask wearing during a global pandemic is so sound,
most stores require customers to wear them. But one unintended consequence of
face coverings is that masks help conceal a person’s identity, leading Wyandotte
police to believe that could be a reason for an increase in shoplifting
incidents. “It has become the social norm to wear face coverings inside
private businesses,” said Deputy Police Chief Archie Hamilton. “As a direct
result, we have seen a substantial increase in retail fraud thefts.”

The difference between success and failure is in the planning and the execution.
Taking something from a thought or idea to a reality can be a long and painful
process lined with failures and detractors. But a great idea is only as good as
the plan you have to bring it to life and the execution everyone delivers to
give it a life. Because without the two the great idea never existed. As one "C"
level executive once told me - He never saw a bad great idea as it was always
the failed plan to roll it out and the poor execution that killed it.
Just a Thought, Gus
