Post-Super Bowl Violence & Looting

Post-Super Bowl Violence Breaks Out in Philadelphia
Super Bowl celebrations descend into violence as wild video shows brutal mass street brawl and looting

Some fans who packed out Philadelphia's downtown areas resorted to lighting fires and looting before brawls broke out with cops as they pushed them off the streets.

Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl celebrations descended into violence as wild videos showed fans lighting fires, looting trucks, and brawling with cops.

The shocking scenes were captured after midnight in the city's center after thousands of fans gathered to toast their team's crushing victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. One of the clips, shared on X, showed fans wearing the Eagles' green jerseys ransacking a laundry truck that had stopped in the street.

A further violent video showed cops using bicycles to push people who had gathered on the city's Broad Street before the fans turned and began to brawl with the officers. More police later drew their battens before continuing to move the fans back. Other footage seemed to show supporters lighting fireworks in the crowd. Elsewhere, cops were seen in footage posted to X drawing their tasers as they attempted to move fans away from the city's smoke and debris-filled streets.

A post on X by the City of Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management read: "Philadelphia Police ask crowds to disperse and clear the streets in Center City. Follow public safety instructions on where to safely exit. Watch those around you."   themirror.com

Public Safety Alert Issued After Philly Super Bowl Win
Looting Breaks Out in Philadelphia After Eagles Win Super Bowl
Looting and vandalism has broken out on the streets of Philadelphia after the Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 to win the Super Bowl.

Philadelphia Police have issued a public safety alert in the wake of the incidents, saying: "Philadelphia police order crowds to disperse and leave city center streets." Newsweek has contacted the Philadelphia Police Department for further details.

A FreedomNews.TV video shows people throwing laundry out of a truck and cheering, with a row of law enforcement standing by. Another clip shows a large fire in the middle of the street, with police officers directing people to move away from it. Other officers on bicycles can be seen gathering as sirens sound in the background.

It reported several fires and said multiple arrests had taken place in the 12th St & Market St area, "where the linen truck was looted and the contents were set on fire."  newsweek.com

The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact

Rite Aid Manager of ORC & Special Investigations Shares Keys to Success
Douglas Horsting, Manager of Organized Retail Crime & Special Investigations/Law Enforcement Liaison at Rite Aid, shares his insights on successfully partnering with law enforcement.

Understanding the language of law enforcement
Douglas Horsting, Manager of Organized Retail Crime & Special Investigations/Law Enforcement Liaison at Rite Aid, entered the NYPD auxiliary police at the age of 17.

Horsting has taken on several roles through his career, including a Senior Security Supervisor at St. John's Riverside Hospital and a School Safety/Security Agent at Hastings-On-Hudson Public Schools. He also served as a both an Armed and Unarmed Patrol Officer for various organizations, where he conducted routine patrols and responded to emergency calls.

Eventually, his career path led him to join Rite Aid as an Organized Retail Crime Investigator/Law Enforcement Liaison. There, he started by covering six Rite Aid store locations and spearheaded programs to combat organized retail crime. To achieve this goal, Horsting got in touch with local law enforcement agencies.

By collaborating with local law enforcement, Horsting began to run operations to arrest offenders and charge them accordingly. It began with Horsting's investigations, where he would identify repeat offenders. Once offenders were identified, Horsting would partner with the NYPD to arrest the individuals in question, and with the support from the District Attorney's Office, have the offenders charged appropriately.

The success of these operations led to Horsting being promoted to his role as Manager of Organized Retail Crime & Special Investigations/Law Enforcement Liaison at Rite Aid.

Partnering with law enforcement successfully

Horsting describes how he successfully facilitated communication between his retail program and the local law enforcement for a collaborative project. With suggestions and ideas from both law enforcement and retail, Horsting was able to devise a plan that has led to nearly 7,000 arrests in three years securitymagazine.com

30+ States Have Laws Against ORC - Lawmakers Want to Do More
State leaders fighting organized retail crime increase in Oklahoma

State leaders are proposing new laws and standardized reporting systems to help agencies better communicate and catch criminals.

State leaders are working to cut down on organized retail crime. One lawmaker wants to create a task force to see how the state can deal with the growing problem nationwide.

The Oklahoma Organized Retail Crime Task Force was created through a 2023 Senate Bill. It created the Oklahoma Organized Retail Crime Task Force until December of 2024. The law says the goal of the task force was to provide the legislature and the Governor with information on organized retail crime and suggestions for what they could do to stop losses from happening in Oklahoma. The task force had 15 members.

The task force report, released in December, has four suggestions for state leaders:

1. Updating the laws to meet today's challenges with organized retail crime.
2. Using a standardized reporting and intelligence sharing platform between retailers and law enforcement.
3. Maintaining an organized retail crime unit inside the Oklahoma Attorney General's Office.
4. Educating the public, prosecutors, and the judicial system on the impact of organized retail crime.

The report says organized retail crimes are often also surrounded with other crimes, like drug possession, illegal firearm possession and assault and battery. Leaders say more than 30 states already have laws against organized retail crime, and many have a method to distinguish organized retail crime from shoplifting or petit larceny. newson6.com

State AG Targets Foreign Gangs Engaging in ORC & Other Crimes
Attorney General of GA launches operation targeting gangs from other countries
Attorney General of Georgia Chris Car has announced the launch of Operation "Hold the Line," a multi-agency effort that targets transnational gangs.

Violent gangs such as Tren de Aragua, a gang that started in a Venezuelan prison, have spread their operations across at least 16 states, including Georgia.

Carr says gangs like Tren de Aragua engage in human trafficking, organized retail crime, weapons smuggling, and drug trafficking in Georgia. Both brothers of Jose Ibarra, the Venezuelan migrant who killed Laken Riley, have been linked to Tren de Aragua.

Along with Carr's Gang Prosecution Unit, his Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit, and his Organized Retail Crime Unit, participants in the operation will include local, state, and federal law enforcement partners.

"My message to these gangs is clear: Georgia is not, and will never be, a safe haven for violent criminals," said Carr. "We will track you down, prosecute you, and dismantle your operations."  yahoo.com

Retail Theft Penalties Enhanced 'Across the Board'
Utah bill seeks stiff penalties for catalytic converter thefts, gangs and repeat offenders
A Utah bill unanimously passed a criminal justice committee Tuesday that modifies retail theft and other crimes by enhancing penalties across the board.

The Criminal Offense Modification Bill, dubbed, HB 38, sponsored by Rep. Ryan D. Wilcox, would enhance penalties for certain theft offenses, particularly when committed as part of a criminal enterprise.

The amended bill also allows prior convictions from other jurisdictions to be factored into sentencing for retail theft, making it easier to increase penalties for repeat offenders, as well as those involved in organized retail theft operations.

The bill, if passed, would reduce the number of people required to constitute a gang or criminal group, modify certain criminal codes so the severity of the offense is based on the retail value of the theft, and would expand the list of offenses, including retail theft, that could be included as part of "a pattern of criminal activity," which stiffens the penalties as well.

Notably, retail crimes being committed by suspects coming from out of state. He also said they are still working through some of the questions and lawmakers expect changes along the way.  stgeorgeutah.com

Security Guard Kidnapping
Man kidnapped Salt Lake security guard for 2 hours, charges say

A Utah man was charged Tuesday with holding a security guard hostage in his car for two hours.

A man was charged Tuesday with holding a security guard hostage in his own car for approximately two hours in a parking lot, despite the guard's attempts to get the attention of others, including a second security guard. Joshua Emmett Barnes, 37, who is believed to be homeless, is charged in 3rd District Court with aggravated kidnapping, a first-degree felony.

On Jan. 7, a 33-year-old man was just finishing his shift as a security guard and walking to his car near 1594 W. North Temple when he was approached by Barnes who asked for a ride. "(The guard) told Barnes, 'No,' and the two went back and forth for about 10 minutes," according to charging documents.

The guard then got into his car, but Barnes followed and got into the passenger seat and demanded that the man drive him to a nearby gas station. Once there, he "deliberately parked between two parking stalls to try to get the attention of the security guards," according to the charges

The security guard waited two days before reporting to police what had happened. When officers interviewed the second security guard, he admitted that he "thought that it was a strange place for him to park" and that his friend "appeared sweaty and nervous" and also heard him say "'please don't leave'" but he didn't understand what was happening," the charges state. ksl.com

Fewer OSHA Inspections Under Trump?
Viewpoint: Early Executive Actions by Trump Portend a Major Contraction at OSHA
Among those Day 1 executive actions (and a couple others that followed later in his first week back in the White House), was a series of Executive Orders and directives targeting staffing, budgeting, and rulemaking, which are designed to drastically shrink regulatory and enforcement agencies, like OSHA.

This effort to shrink OSHA and other executive agencies should come as no surprise to anyone. Dismantling the administrative state was a stated goal of the first Trump Administration and again from the campaign trail this time, and that was one campaign promise President Trump delivered on the last go around. By the end of the first Trump Administration, federal OSHA had shrunk to the fewest number of compliance officers in the agency's history (dropping from 952 compliance officers at the start of the Trump Administration in 2016 to 761 by January 2020), and the agency had a record number of vacancies in "middle management" positions throughout the Area and Regional field offices.

Starting on Day 1 of the second Trump Administration, the writing has been on the wall for OSHA that it is about to experience another major contraction. A smaller OSHA means less resources to conduct inspections (OSHA conducted thousands of fewer inspections during the first Trump Administration than during the Obama or Biden Administrations), engage in robust enforcement (the total number of citations and significant enforcement actions decreased during the first Trump Administration), and to work on or promulgate new standards (there was essentially no new rulemaking, other than deregulatory rulemaking, during the first Trump Administration). We predict similar effects on the work of OSHA during this term. claimsjournal.com

How a Looming Trade War Impact Shopping Habits
Many Montrealers changing their shopping habits as trade war with U.S. looms
"We're all changing our way of shopping," said Taché, 67, who works as a pharmacist in the South Shore. "It's a historic moment right now."

Management at Supermarché PA is already in talks with buyers about cutting out some U.S. products, according to director of strategy and innovation Nicholas Erimos. He said buyers for the supermarket scoped the store early Monday morning to assess which products are American-made, and that all five PA stores across Greater Montreal will be heavily promoting Canadian products in their flyers.

Changing the produce aisle will be a challenge, Erimos said. "They have huge fruit and vegetable manufacturers and massive plants. It's hard to not depend on them, but limiting our dependence on them is what we're focusing on right now." He said PA suppliers are looking toward orange producers in Valencia, Spain, to swap out their oranges from Florida.

But he said only about 10 per cent of PA's stock comes from the U.S. These challenges will also funnel toward consumers, Erimos said. "Canadians are struggling with two things right now: They want Canadian-made products, but they also want affordable groceries. So it's going to be a challenge."  montrealgazette.com

Making All Apple Data Worldwide Accessible?
U.K. orders Apple to let it spy on users' encrypted accounts

Secret order requires blanket access to protected cloud backups around the world, which if implemented would undermine Apple's privacy pledge to its users.

Security officials in the United Kingdom have demanded that Apple create a back door allowing them to retrieve all the content any Apple user worldwide has uploaded to the cloud, people familiar with the matter told The Washington Post.

The British government's undisclosed order, issued last month, requires blanket capability to view fully encrypted material, not merely assistance in cracking a specific account, and has no known precedent in major democracies. Its application would mark a significant defeat for tech companies in their decades-long battle to avoid being wielded as government tools against their users, the people said, speaking under the condition of anonymity to discuss legally and politically sensitive issues.

Rather than break the security promises it made to its users everywhere, Apple is likely to stop offering encrypted storage in the U.K., the people said. Yet that concession would not fulfill the U.K. demand for backdoor access to the service in other countries, including the United States.

The office of the Home Secretary has served Apple with a document called a technical capability notice, ordering it to provide access under the sweeping U.K. Investigatory Powers Act of 2016, which authorizes law enforcement to compel assistance from companies when needed to collect evidence, the people said. washingtonpost.com

Microsoft warns 3K exposed ASP.NET machine keys at risk of weaponization

An unknown threat actor recently used an exposed key to wage code injection cyberattacks.

Microsoft has identified more than 3,000 publicly exposed ASP.NET machine keys that could be used by threat actors in code injection attacks against enterprise servers.

In a blog post Thursday, Microsoft Threat Intelligence said it observed "limited activity" in December, in which a threat actor used a publicly available ASP.NET machine key to inject malicious code and deploy the Godzilla post-exploitation framework. While Microsoft said the threat actor is "unattributed," the U.S. government previously has tied the Godzilla framework, which creates malicious web shells that can be used as backdoors, to Chinese state-sponsored threat actors. cybersecuritydive.com

Another Amazon Settlement Over Delivery Driver Compensation
Amazon to pay nearly $4M to settle lawsuit alleging it took tips from drivers
Amazon has agreed to pay nearly $4 million to settle charges that the e-commerce company subsidized its labor costs by taking tips its delivery drivers received from customers, District of Columbia Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb said Friday.

The settlement came four years after Amazon forked over $61.7 million to resolve a complaint the Federal Trade Commission brought over similar accusations.

In 2022, the office of DC's attorney general at the time followed up with a lawsuit alleging Amazon violated the District's consumer protection laws by misleading residents about how tips paid digitally were used.

According to the lawsuit, the affected drivers were part of Amazon's Flex business, which allows people to deliver Amazon packages with their own cars.

DC's lawsuit said that after launching the program in 2015, the company represented to consumers that all tips added during check-out for Amazon Flex orders would go to drivers.

But both the District and the FTC alleged that Amazon changed its payment model in late 2016 to lower its costs but did not disclose the switch to either customers or drivers. apnews.com

Will North Carolina Facility Become 2nd Unionized Amazon Location?
4,000 Garner Amazon workers part of upstart union, want $30 an hour

An upstart union is attempting to represent more than 4,000 Amazon workers at one of the online retailer's facilities in North Carolina.

North Carolina is a state that is generally hostile to unions. Amazon is a company that is, historically, extremely hostile to unions. Now an upstart union is attempting to represent more than 4,000 Amazon workers at one of the online retailer's facilities there.

More than 100 workers on Saturday were outside the Garner facility rallying for better wages and better benefits as the National Labor Relations Board will begin overseeing a six-day vote starting Monday, with votes due to be counted Saturday.

A win by the union, Carolina Amazonians United for Solidarity and Empowerment, or CAUSE, in the town of Garner would be just the second Amazon facility to see a union win a representation vote, following a 2022 election at one of the company's major sorting and distribution centers in Staten Island, New York. wral.com

Wichita, KS: Thieves in Wichita are targeting stores that sell Pokemon, Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh! Cards
Davin and Bailey Taylor thought about closing up shop after their card store near downtown Wichita was broken into for a second time less than a year after opening. Instead, they decided to close in Wichita at the end of last year and move to Derby, where they will reopen Arena Hobbies on March 1 at 200 N Baltimore Suite No. 900. The two break-ins totaled around $38,000 in merchandise -$8,000 worth taken in the first break-in on July 26 and $30,000 on Oct. 14 - from the store at 1602 East Waterman, Davin Taylor said. There was damage too. And that wasn't the end of break-ins and thefts at stores that sell and host people to play collectible card games like Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon. "Over the pandemic, trading cards blew up. Value spiked. People were scalping Pokemon left and right. People caught wind that cards have value," Taylor said. "And since the pandemic, a lot of people are in the game now, but I believe, personally, that these people realize that hobby shops don't have the level of security that a bank does, but they can probably get just as much value and product as though they were robbing a bank." There have been at least six thefts from different stores since then kansas.com

Stoneboro, PA: Pennsylvania State Police investigating attempted break-in at Mercer County gun shop
An investigation is underway after a local gun store owner says several people tried breaking into Griffin Arms in Mercer County on Sunday. Surveillance videos show every second as five people worked to break into the gun shop early Sunday morning. "I don't know if they were juveniles or what, they seem to be young, but yeah, they spent about 45 minutes trying to break into my store," owner Joshua Clark said. Seen in all black, wearing face masks and gloves, the individuals appear to have used several tools to pry open the store's front door around 5 a.m. before taking off, but not before leaving a trail of evidence behind. "Somebody cut their hand and left a bunch of blood at the scene. PSP Forensics came out, and they collected a bunch of DNA. I think there was a stick of deodorant that they left there, too, funny enough, that must have fallen out of their car, so and some other random things that had spilled into the parking lot," Clark said. Clark says in the 10 years he's been open, this is the first time someone tried breaking in, and says police believe the individuals are from the Pittsburgh area.  cbsnews.com

Los Angeles, CA: Update: Security Guard Sentenced to 15 Years to Life for Fatal Shooting in Walgreens
A Covina man who worked as a private security guard was sentenced Friday to 15 years to life in state prison for fatally shooting a man during a confrontation inside a Walgreens store in Hollywood more than six years ago. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge H. Clay Jacke denied defense attorney Alexandra Kazarian's request for probation for Donald Vincent Ciota, along with the defense's motion for a new trial. Ciota was convicted last Oct. 23 of second-degree murder for the Dec. 2, 2018, killing of 21-year-old Jonathan Hart. Ciota was arrested by Los Angeles police 26 days after the shooting. Jurors acquitted the 34-year-old man of the more serious charge of first-degree murder requested by the prosecution. One of Ciota's attorneys, Mark Geragos, had asked jurors to acquit his client. Geragos said after the verdict was read that it was "obvious to me that the pressure of the activists in the courtroom was too much for this jury," saying that two of the jurors were emotional when polled about the panel's verdict.  theepochtimes.com

Repetition is one of the keys to success. Developing and evolving your approach, your message, your actions and processes and focusing on repetitively delivering them, you'll be able to almost transcend your message and focus on its delivery as opposed to its action. We all have core things we do every day and if you can develop repetitive responses, that ensures continuity, you can then begin to master what you do and truly make an impact on the group you're working with.
