Cam-Dex Names Dan Krumme President

Cam-Dex Security Corp., a company focused on quality design, testing, and maintenance of integrated security systems, announced it has named Dan Krumme as its new President. Dan Krumme is the fourth-generation family member to be involved in the business operations of Cam-Dex Security Corp., a well-known security systems integration company with offices in Kansas City, Kan., and St. Louis, Mo. The Coast Guard will also be patrolling the water and establishing security zones along Biscayne Bay. At Port Miami, already one of the nation's busiest, agents have started looking out for drugs and contraband, including counterfeit Super Bowl souvenirs.

In the sky, the FAA will be restricting airspace above Hard Rock Stadium with Blackhawk helicopters patrolling for unauthorized aircraft - even drones.

Some of the military-grade helicopters will be equipped with infrared cameras that can spot people on the ground and in the stands.

Yorgan Arnaldo Ramos Teran (Ramos Teran), 46, of Weston, Florida, is charged with violating the temporary flight restrictions set up to protect the public during Super Bowl LIV and the week leading up to the game. The night of January 29, 2020, Ramos Teran illegally flew a drone in the temporarily restricted air space of Ocean Drive and 8th Street in Miami Beach. If convicted, Ramon Teran faces up to one year in federal prison. Initial appearance before a federal magistrate judge at 2:00 p.m. today. justice.gov
 


Coronavirus Update


213 people have died, with about 9,800 infections

100 cases have been confirmed in 19 other countries

 

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases has gone up more than tenfold in a week, and Chinese officials on Friday reported the highest death toll in a 24-hour period.

● Forty-three more deaths in China were announced, bringing the toll to 213.

● Nearly 2,000 new cases were recorded in the country in the past 24 hours, raising the worldwide total to nearly 9,800, according to Chinese and World Health Organization data. The vast majority of the cases are inside China; about 100 cases have been confirmed in 19 other countries.

How SIAC Works With Law Enforcement to Reduce False Alarms

The voice of the electronic security industry

The Security Industry Alarm Coalition (SIAC) has a mission to be the voice of the electronic security industry on issues involving municipal alarm management for the approximately 18,000 public safety agencies in the U.S. and Canada. Specifically, SIAC works to minimize the number of false alarms, which are a costly waste of resources for law enforcement jurisdictions.

SIAC works directly with leaders in law enforcement at the national level, such as the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the National Sheriffs' Association (NSA); and at the state and local levels to provide expertise and proven strategies to reduce unnecessary dispatches to alarm sites while maintaining the police response taxpayers endorse and deserve. The primary tools for alarm management are education on causes of false alarms and implementation of the Model Ordinance for Alarm Management and False Alarm Reduction.

Recently both the International Association of Chiefs of Police and National Sheriffs' Association passed resolutions supporting SIAC's Model Ordinance. This has resulted in dispatch reductions between 40-50% in jurisdictions where all of the model's recommendations have been followed.

 SIAC's biggest challenge is maintaining strong financial support for its work during a time of dramatic changes in the structure of the electronic security industry.

SIAC, Inc. is a 501(c)(6) not-for-profit Delaware corporation.  The top three departments for increased investment were IT (69%), marketing/sales (69%) and risk management and compliance (60%).

Digital transformation (67%), product or service expansion (65%), restructuring or reorganization (40%) and geographic expansion (36%) ranked as the top growth strategies that retailers are planning to pursue in 2020, according to a survey of retail CFOs by BDO. Investing in technology or infrastructure (28%), data privacy (16%) and preparing for an economic downturn (15%) ranked as their top priorities.

Seventy-three percent of retail CFOs said their business is thriving, with 83% anticipating a revenue increase in 2020, and 77% expecting higher profitability. CFOs at big-box retailers are the most confident, with 92% saying their companies are thriving, followed by specialty retailers (76%), pure-play e-tailers (64%) and department stores (61%).

UK: Britain's worst KFC installs WIRE FENCES at counters after staff are attacked
KFC is installing wire fences on its counters to protect staff from customer attacks. The fast food giant has been forced to put up a metal barrier after a customer jumped the counter and attacked one of its workers in Birmingham, England. The shocking move means metal bars - just big enough for a family chicken bucket to pass - separate staff and customers. The barricades - secured by chunky metal bars bolted from the counter to the ceilings - were introduced after fighting and an incident involving a worker, according to BirminghamLive. Coronavirus Campaigns Spreading Malware
A new report by IBM X-Force Exchange found that cybercriminals are taking advantage of the coronavirus outbreak, and using it to spread malware.

"The practice of leveraging worldwide events by basing malicious emails on current important topics has become common among cybercriminals. Such a strategy is able to trick more victims into clicking malicious links or opening malicious files, ultimately increasing the effectiveness of a malware campaign," notes IBM.
 
X-Force discovered the first campaign of this type, in which the outbreak of a biological virus is used as a means to distribute a computer virus. IBM researchers say that what makes these attacks rather special, is the fact that they deliver the Emotet trojan, which has shown increased activity recently. The virus urges its victims into opening an attached Word document, described as a supposed notice regarding infection prevention measures. securitymagazine.com

How to prioritize IT security projects

For better, faster and more robust protection, smart prioritization is an absolute must. Unfortunately, prevailing conditions in the IT space have long worked against this goal.

How should IT teams prioritize risk?

The simplest way to implement an effective prioritization strategy is to develop a basic framework that can be followed and adjusted as needed. The following is one such example:

Risk identification.
You can't prioritize effectively if you don't understand what makes you vulnerable. Control risks, systemic risks, integration risks - all of these categories (and more) must be accounted for.

Risk assessment.
Once you've identified all potential risks, it's time to assess the likelihood and probable impact of these risks. Risks that fall into the high likelihood, high probable impact bucket should obviously move to the front of the remediation list. 3 Retailers Sharing Their RFID Journeys
Under Armour: RFID Is a 'Must Have'

Radio frequency identification is essential technology for Under Armour moving forward. That was the message Kathleen Joyce, Under Armour's lead for global inventory control, delivered during a panel discussion sponsored by Nedap Retail at the National Retail Federation (NRF)'s Big Show.

"We don't really see this as a 'nice to have'," Joyce stated during the panel discussion. "It's really a 'must have' to get you to the next level. We know it's coming, and we are on board. We want to make sure we do it the right way. Our global partners are excited about it. Everyone sees the value in it. It's just a question of laying the right foundation."

Also on the panel was Nate Peterson, the VP of supply chain at Outdoor Voices, a recreational apparel retailer operating 11 stores (see RFID Helps Bring Outdoor Voices to Shoppers on the Move). "We're a smaller brand," he told attendees. "We're using [RFID] as a competitive advantage. We're focused on customer acquisition and customer retention."

Sophie Ecobichon, the VP of finance at French retailer Celio, said her company originally adopted RFID in 2018 to improve inventory accuracy, and that the technology has since delivered a "huge improvement" (see RFID Tracks Goods at 750 French Menswear Stores). The firm now wants to use RFID inventory data to improve "click and collect" (also known as "buy online, pickup in store," or BOPIS). "The difficulty," Ecobichon explained, "is that we don't have real-time inventory on our website. Our goal is to get this everywhere in the company and available on the website. It will be easier for staff to fulfil the order."

The session's moderator was Jeroen Struycken, Nedap Retail's VP of business development. Struycken asked the panelists to offer advice for retailers in the audience, and Ecobichon replied, "You don't have to waste time on ROI [return on investment]. It should be a conviction." RFID Helps Bring Outdoor Voices to Shoppers on the Move

Active wear brand Outdoor Voices (OV) has deployed an RFID-based solution across all of its stores within a matter of weeks, in an effort to increase the visibility of its inventory and thereby enable omnichannel services, as well as in-store availability. The solution employs Nedap's !D Cloud solution, running on a mobile device, including its cloud-based software platform.

To reach customers wherever they may be (on a cycle trail or in a park, for example), the women's and men's athletic apparel brand has a focus on e-commerce first, followed by retail. The company deployed RFID across all of its stores in October 2019, following a three-store pilot that spanned three months. Homeland Security vows crackdown on e-commerce counterfeiting

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Office of Strategy, Policy, and Plans on Friday released a 54-page report to the president on "Combating Trafficking in Counterfeit and Pirated Goods," promising to strengthen scrutiny, enforcement and punishment to tackle what it calls a rising problem in e-commerce.

In a foreword, acting department secretary Chad Wolf wrote that, "illicit goods trafficked to American consumers by e-commerce platforms and online third-party marketplaces threaten public health and safety, as well as national security," and stifles innovation and competition.

The American Apparel & Footwear Association - which said it had weighed in as the report was compiled and last year called on the U.S. trade office to deem several Amazon websites as "notorious markets" for their proliferation of counterfeit goods - said in an emailed statement that it welcomed the actions outlined in the report.

The announcement of a federal crackdown on counterfeits comes as Amazon in particular struggles to contain the proliferation of fakes and unauthorized sales on its platform.

It's not that the e-commerce giant hasn't tried to stem the tide. In October, in response to AAFA's call to arms, Amazon said that in 2018 it prevented more than a million "suspected bad actors" from listing products and blocked more than 3 billion suspicious listings. The company also maintained that over 99.9% of its assortment "never have received a complaint about a suspected counterfeit from a customer or rights owner."

Other marketplaces have faced similar criticism, notably luxury resale site The RealReal. That marketplace came under fire last year after a CNBC investigation unearthed faulty authentication processes and led The RealReal founder and CEO Julie Wainwright to walk back its earlier claims that fakes are never found for sale there. retaildive.com

Amazon Q4 Sales Up 20.5% to $87.44 Billion

3rd Party Sellers - $54B in Sales in '19 - Screening For Counterfeits

Amazon.com Inc., No. 1 in the 2019 Digital Commerce 360 Top 1000, generated $280.52 billion in revenue across all business segments during 2019, up 20.5% from $232.89 billion the prior year. For the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, sales rose 20.8% over the prior year to $87.44 billion from $72.38 billion. The rollout of 1-day shipping impacted profit, but income still rose 15.0% for the year to $11.59 billion from $10.07 billion in 2018.

 Sales through physical stores - Whole Foods, Amazon Bookstores, Amazon Go, etc. - generated $17.19 billion, down 0.2% from $17.22 billion the previous year. In Q4, sales dipped 0.9%, to $4.36 billion from $4.40 billion the prior year.

 Third-party seller services, which include commissions from third-party marketplace sales, added $53.76 billion to consolidated revenue in 2019, up 25.8% from $42.75 billion the previous year. Brooklyn ID Theft Gang Member Gets 9 Yrs Fed. Prison
for $3.5M in Fraud Purchases Hitting Retailers
 Jamal Simon, 31, and his Co-Conspirators Stole Other Individuals' Identities To Fraudulently Obtain More Than $3.5 Million in Cash, Gift Cards, and Merchandise.

From March 2017 through at least July 2017, SIMON and his co-conspirators carried out a wide-ranging fraud scheme that involved unlawfully obtaining individually identifiable information of other individuals, impersonating those individuals in order to obtain unauthorized access to their bank accounts, credit and debit card accounts, and cellphone service provider accounts; and then using such access to, among other things, facilitate the fraudulent transfer of funds to bank accounts controlled by members of the conspiracy and the unauthorized purchasing of merchandise and gift cards at retail stores. In some cases, SIMON transferred victims' telephone numbers to a cellphone controlled by SIMON so that he and his co-conspirators could circumvent credit card companies' standard security measures that confirm suspicious transactions through text message or email to the consumer. 

The scheme perpetrated by SIMON and his co-conspirators defrauded financial institutions and individual victims of more than $3.5 million. justice.gov

Yulee, FL: 4 people accused of stealing from Hibbett Sports in Yulee involved in high-speed chase
Employees at Hibbett Sports on Pages Dairy Road in Yulee said on Sunday night, two men and two women were walking around inside the store, appearing to shop -- then made their way out the door with 82 pieces of clothing, valued up to $3,200. According to the arrest report, an employee was pushed out of the way on their way out of the store. The Nassau County Sheriff's Office said the group drove off in a silver Dodge van. Deputies tried to stop the van, according to the report, but it continued, leading them on a high-speed chase. In the dash cam video, the van could be seen weaving through traffic. wokv.com

Thieves smashed into a beauty store on Jacksonville's Northside Thursday morning. Lacey, NJ: Man Found Weeks After Home Depot Shoplifting
A Toms River man who got away after a shoplifting incident at Home Depot was caught Wednesday, Lacey police said. Robert Stevenson was the second person charged for the Jan. 14 incident. Two men face multiple felony charges in connection with last Friday's smash-and-grab theft at Macy's in Walnut Creek. Shortly after the theft, Walnut Creek Police arrested Christopher Dopp and Richard Lange. They are accused of stealing $65,244 worth of gold jewelry and doing $80,000 in damage to the store, for a total of $145,000 in losses for Macy's. The Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office announced Thursday that it has filed multiple felony charges against the pair. patch.com

Shop owners in Perth's CBD have praised a specialist police operation targeting shoplifting but say they are concerned about what will happen when it ends. Theft costs WA retailers a billion dollars each year. After recent spikes in crime, WA Police have been cracking down as part of Operation Heat Shield. The blitz, which started in December, has cost $5 million in overtime to allow a bigger police presence on the street. While shopkeepers have welcomed the increased police presence, they say they're concerned that the operation is only being funded until May. They say if it's not continued, the problems with theft will return. Store manager Laurie Logan said the operation has made a difference. Columbus, OH: Officers kill armed 15-year-old suspected in CVS Robbery
Officers fatally shot a 15-year-old who was armed with a gun and suspected in the robbery of a pharmacy store on Thursday, Columbus police said. At least two officers fired at the boy when police confronted him at the CVS store and found him to have a gun, police said on Twitter. The boy was taken to a hospital in critical condition and died of his injuries. Nobody else was injured. Officers were called to the store just after 6 p.m. An investigation is underway. The death is the second fatal officer-involved shooting of a robbery suspect by Columbus police in less than a week. sfgate.com

Houston, TX: Woman comes out of grocery store to find boyfriend shot dead in car
A woman left a southeast Houston grocery store to find her boyfriend shot to death in their car. It happened around 6 p.m. in the Fiesta grocery store parking lot in the 800 block of S. Wayside. One witness said his wife heard several "bangs" but thought someone was just breaking into a car. Police are on the scene now and will be checking for surveillance video. abc13.com

Sparks, NV: Police arrest man with shotgun, pistols, bandolier of ammo at Walmart
Sparks police arrested a man who was reportedly caught carrying a gun and wearing a military-style vest with a bandolier of shotgun shells inside a Walmart store. Joe Elton Mosley, 42, faces three counts of carrying a concealed weapon and three counts of prohibited person in possession of a firearm. Authorities arrested Mosley after receiving a report from a citizen who reported seeing a man with a gun inside Walmart The citizen told police the man was possibly carrying a gun and a bandolier of shotgun shells under his jacket. The responding officers contacted the store's security guards, who reported that the man was still inside the store. He was seen wearing a military-style vest with a bandolier of shotgun shells across his chest, police said in a news release. An officer met with security and identified the suspect, who was also caught concealing a shotgun under his jacket. Police arrested the suspect, identified as Mosley, as he was leaving the store. They also found he had a shotgun slung across his back and was carrying two handguns, a large hunting knife and numerous rounds of ammunition. Investigators later learned that Mosely did not have a permit to carry a concealed weapon and that he had been previously convicted of a felony. rgj.com

Sonora, CA: Retail Shoplifting On The Rise In Sonora
Six different Sonora retailers including two groceries, a big box, dollar and dress stores were targeted by thieves this past weekend. While not all the thieves succeed in getting away with the loot, it wasn't for a lack of trying. Sonora Police relay the first theft report came in on Saturday at 4:16 p.m. with the last one on Monday just after midnight. The rash of crimes prompted Clarke Broadcasting to ask Sonora Police if a crime ring had targeted the area or if this is a new trend? Chief Turu VanderWiel dismissed the ring theory but pointed to what he calls "a steady increase over the years," which he attributes to recent legislation. "The designation of crimes from felonies to misdemeanors along with prison and jails being overfilled. Lebanon County, PA: Woman needs surgery to treat cancer,
but judge gives her 10 months prison time for $109 theft
A woman with cervical and ovarian cancer was hoping for house arrest when she went to a sentencing hearing for a retail theft charge earlier this month, but her plans to schedule surgery were thrown off when a judge sentenced her to 10 months in state prison instead. Ashley Menser, 36, was arrested in September 2018 for retail theft, and later pleaded guilty to taking $109.63 worth of items from Weis Markets in Palmyra. She has had cervical cancer for several years, and was diagnosed with ovarian cancer soon after her arrest. Stephanie Bashore. said they had tried to delay the criminal proceedings for as long as possible in order to focus on her treatment. They were shocked when Menser was sentenced to state prison and are desperate to get her the care she needs. This isn't Menser's first brush with the law - according to the criminal complaint she has several prior convictions for retail theft. ldnews.com

Jackson, TN: Jessica Conger, wife of Mayor Scott Conger, enters 'best interest' guilty plea in shoplifting case
Conger was cited misdemeanor shoplifting and theft under $1,000 in July 2019. Conger appeared in Jackson City Court Thursday afternoon and entered a best interest plea to a charge of shoplifting at Walmart. She will serve 11 months and 29 days on unsupervised probation, according to her attorney William Massey. She was also sentenced to pay court costs and restitution. jacksonsun.com

Birmingham, AL: Man convicted in 2018 deadly stabbing at downtown Birmingham furniture store
A 31-year-old man has been convicted in the fatal stabbing of another man inside a downtown Birmingham furniture store. A Jefferson County jury Thursday morning found Wesley Dewayne Conor guilty on a charge of murder. The slaying happened Aug. 4, 2018, killing 22-year-old Ladaniel Willis. al.com
