The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact
Retail Execs Fought Back Against Theft
in 2024
In 2024, retail execs took action against rising shoplifting & violence
in stores
According to Bob Larkin, shoplifting is only getting worse for
retailers.
Larkin,
the senior vice president of retail enterprise accounts for security
services provider Allied Universal, said his clients - retailers at
malls and shopping centers throughout North America - have watched
shoplifting become more intense, and sometimes violent, over the past
few years. He said those retailers are seeing larger groups of
shoplifters come in the stores at the same time, sometimes as many as
eight people, and that jewelry stores are more often seeing
smash-and-grabs in the middle of the day.
In 2024, retailers sought out solutions to ramp
up security while minimizing any impact on sales - both by
ramping up traditional security measures and adopting new technology.
What the year laid bare is that some of the most common tactics - like
locking up merchandise and getting customers to flag down an employee to
unlock it - haven't cut it, and retailers are increasingly in search of
other solutions.
Larkin said some retailers have asked for additional security guards
in the stores or to bring in more off-duty police officers. Some, he
said, requested a more tactical look for their security guards - for
example, a bright yellow uniform as opposed to a black suit and white
shirt - to be able to identify them more easily.
Retailers, including CVS and Walmart, have started testing ways for
customers to open locked security cases with their phones, per
reports this year. "This pilot is an example of how we're applying
technology as a possible solution and we're eager to learn more about
how it works and is received," CVS spokesperson Amy Thibault told Retail
Brew. In December, CNBC reported that some Walmart employees in Texas
began wearing body cameras in a pilot program.
Larkin said his clients have also turned to RFID for information on
what's being stolen or lost and where - whether it be in the supply
chain, store or at the point of sale - as well as miniature GPS units
help track products and aid law enforcement.
"Retailers want to look at what are the ways now that they can deter
the criminals from committing the crimes, reduce the amount of violence,
but not create the friction for an everyday, legitimate customer,"
Johnston said.

Lawmaker Urges DOJ to Ramp Up Fight
Against ORC
Sen. Ossoff Launches Inquiry to Protect Georgia Businesses from
Organized Crime
U.S.
Senator Jon Ossoff is launching an inquiry to better protect Georgia
businesses from organized retail theft. Sen. Ossoff recently urged
the Department of Justice to strengthen investigations and stop
organized retail theft.
"I write to request information on DOJ's efforts to combat organized
retail crime (ORC) and to urge federal law enforcement to
comprehensively respond to these criminal networks," Sen. Ossoff wrote
to Attorney General Merrick Garland. "ORC threatens the safety of
Georgia's retail workers and customers."
According to a May Congressional Research Service report, the FBI's
National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) does not collect
data on theft that separates organized retail theft from other types of
theft.
According to a report issued by Retail Industry Leaders Association and
Buy Safe America Coalition,Georgia businesses are estimated to lose over
$3 billion annually to retail theft. This includes $1.6 billion in
stolen goods and $326 million in lost tax revenue, along with 17,000
lost jobs, the report said.
"To effectively fight ORC, we must understand its scope and impact,"
Sen. Ossoff continued. "Therefore, I request information regarding
the Department of Justice's efforts to identify, evaluate the impacts
of, and stop ORC."

Another State Enacts Law to Fight ORC
Ohio Takes Action Against Organized Retail Theft with New Law
A new law aimed at combating the rising tide of organized retail
theft in Ohio was signed into law by Governor Mike DeWine on
Wednesday. The legislation, co-written by Attorney General Dave Yost's
office, seeks to address the crime rings responsible for stealing
billions of dollars worth of merchandise each year, which ultimately
drives up prices for consumers.
"Consumers bear the cost when organized retail theft goes unchecked,"
said Yost. "With this law, we aim to ensure that thieves, not Ohio
consumers, are the ones who pay the price."
The Fight Organized Retail Crime and Empower Law Enforcement Act
introduces stronger penalties for retail theft
rings and creates a statewide task force to investigate these crimes.
The law also establishes an advisory council within the Attorney
General's Office. Yost's office worked in collaboration with the Ohio
Council of Retail Merchants, Ohio Chamber of Commerce, and state
lawmakers to craft the law. State Rep. Haraz Ghanbari and state Sen.
George Lang sponsored the legislation.
One of the key provisions of the new law is the creation of a felony
offense for organized retail theft, with penalties that escalate based
on the value of the stolen merchandise. Repeat offenders will face
harsher charges, with a minimum fourth-degree felony charge for
individuals convicted of theft in the last three years.
The law also forms a new task force under Yost's Ohio Organized Crime
Investigations Commission to focus on investigating retail theft
across the state. The task force will be supported by the Organized
Retail Theft Advisory Council, which will include representatives from
law enforcement, retail organizations, and prosecutors.

Police Applaud Positive Impact of ORC
Law
Albuquerque police sees success with organized retail crime law
The organized retail crime law went into effect in June 2023. It
allows prosecutors to add up the value of stolen items regardless of
where it was stolen, making repeated smaller shoplifting charges into a
more serious felony crime.
APD Commander of Investigative Service Division, Jeffery Barnard, points
to Ryan Schuessler as an example of why this law is important.
"They're people who have significant history and have repeatedly
offended and victimized different stores after the last year and
even prior to that, so they're very difficult for the community to deal
with," Barnard said.
Barnard said they've been able to charge about 100 people under the
statute. It's landed more suspected criminals in jail for longer. He
also said in November they finally saw shoplifting number turn around.
"Year to date stats starting in November, we were down in shoplifting
for the year overall," said Barnard. While it takes more time and
work to get people on the felony charge, Barnard said it's worth it.

AI's Growing Impact on Retail
IBM survey reveals how retailers are using AI
A new survey indicates the use of artificial intelligence is growing
and expanding in the retail industry.
Retail and consumer product executives are "dramatically" shifting
their focus toward AI, according to "Embedding AI in Your Brand's
DNA," a new global study of retail and consumer products executives from
the IBM Institute for Business Value.
In 2025, respondents say they plan to allocate an average of 3.32% of
their revenue to AI - equivalent to $33.2 million annually for a $1
billion company. Survey data indicates this investment is set to span
functions such as customer service, supply chain operations, talent
acquisition, and marketing innovation.
Respondents also expect AI to evolve from a back-end tool to a core
business driver, with projected AI technology investments beyond the
IT function growing by 52% during the next year.
The study revealed that 81% of respondents and 96% of their team
members are already using AI to a moderate or significant extent.
Respondents said they want to expand AI usage to more sophisticated use
cases, such as integrated business planning, where they plan to increase
its usage by 82% in 2025.
Also, respondents expect that 31% of their employees will need to
learn new skills to work with AI in the next year, increasing to 45%
within three years.

Economic loss from California wildfires could reach $52B-57B: Report
Total damage from the devastating wildfires scorching Southern
California could amount to between $52 billion and $57 billion in
economic losses, according to a new analysis.
The estimate, issued by AccuWeather's Global Weather Center, accounts
for both direct and indirect impacts of the storm and includes both
insured and uninsured losses. Some such costs relate to property,
wages, crops, infrastructure, supply chains and travel, per the
report.
Also included are evacuations, cleanup, emergency management and medical
expenses.
"This is already one of the worst wildfires in California history,"
Jonathan Porter, AccuWeather chief meteorologist, said in a statement.
"Should a large number of additional structures be burned in the coming
days, it may become the worst wildfire in modern California history
based on the number of structures burned and economic loss."
To put the preliminary estimate into context, AccuWeather found that
total damage and economic losses from Maui's 2023 wildfires were $13
billion to $16 billion.

Report: Barnes & Noble to open 60 stores in 2025
It appears that brick and mortar book stores are having a resurgence.
Barnes & Noble is planning to open about 60 stores in the United
States this year, according to a report by the Financial Times. The
nation's largest retail bookseller was acquired by British private
equity group Elliott Investment Management in 2019. The all-cash deal
was valued valued at about $683 million. The deal followed Elliott's
2018 acquisition of Waterstones, the largest retail bookseller in the
U.K.
In 2024, Barnes & Noble opened 57 stores in the U.S., the report
said, while Waterstones opened 12 in the U.K. Both chains are headed up
by James Daunt, who also owns an independent bookstore chain in the U.K.

In Case You Missed It
Cyber task force has a long to-do list for next president
The change in leadership presents an
opportunity to assess what's working, where adjustments could be made and areas
that are in most need of prioritization, the McCrary Institute said.
When the next president and their administration takes office in January, they
will confront perennial problems and a long list of unfinished cyber business.
A group of 40 cybersecurity experts from McCrary Institute for Cyber and
Critical Infrastructure at Auburn University and the Cyberspace Solarium
Commission 2.0 released 39 recommendations last week to provide a roadmap for
how the incoming administration can address gaps in cyber defense.
The most pressing recommendations - priorities for the first 100 days of the
next administration - include regulatory harmonization and a review of the
national cybersecurity strategy the Biden administration released in March
2023. The recommendations also call on the administration to prioritize efforts
to address the cyber workforce shortage and strengthen public-private
partnerships.
The task force insists the time for bold, decisive action is now. While
the recommendations in the report don't break new ground, they do emphasize and
reinforce goals long sought by the current and previous administrations.
"There is no obvious course correction here," Katell Thielemann, distinguished
VP analyst at Gartner, said via email.
There are some outliers in the 36-page report, according to Thielemann. The task
force had particularly forceful language around the need to "move beyond a
purely defensive posture to one that imposes real costs on those who would do us
harm in cyberspace."

Cybersecurity Startup Investment Up in 2024
Investors narrow scope of cyber funding deals in 2024
Total funding was up 9% year over year to
$9.5 billion. More than half of all dollars raised went to late-stage rounds,
Pinpoint Search Group said.
Venture
capitalists invested $9.5 billion into cybersecurity startups during 2024,
marking a 9% increase from 2023, according to Pinpoint Search Group research
released Tuesday.
Security startups raised the combined $9.5 billion last year over 304 funding
rounds and 79 M&A deals. Pinpoint Search Group tracked 346 funding rounds
and 91 M&A deals in 2023.
Nearly 60% of funding rounds in 2024 went to early stage security startups,
spread across seed and series A rounds. Yet, more than half of all dollars
raised went to late-stage rounds.
The lookback on cybersecurity funding underscored a continuing trend toward
larger deals in the sector. Total funding was up year over year while the
number of rounds declined.
That trend largely held on a quarterly basis throughout the year, too,
especially in the second half of 2024. Funding reached $2.3 billion over 77
rounds in Q1 and investors narrowed their scope further in Q4, spreading $1.7
billion in total investment across 56 rounds.

'Cybersecurity Labeling Program'
The U.S. Cyber Trust Mark set to launch
The White House has announced the launch of the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, a
voluntary cybersecurity labeling program for consumer-grade
internet-connected devices.
"The White House launched this bipartisan effort to educate American consumers
and give them an easy way to assess the cybersecurity of such products,
as well as incentivize companies to produce more cybersecure devices, much as
EnergyStar labels did for energy efficiency," the White House said.
"The U.S. Cyber Trust Mark program allows [manufacturers] to test products
against established cybersecurity criteria from the U.S. National Institute
of Standards and Technology via compliance testing by accredited labs, and earn
the Cyber Trust Mark label, providing an easy way for American consumers to see
the cybersecurity of products they choose to bring into their homes."
The program will apply to consumer wireless IoT products: smart home
appliances, home security cameras, voice-activated shopping devices, fitness
trackers, garage door openers, baby monitors, etc.

Will Amazon See Another Unionized Warehouse?
Amazon workers in North Carolina to vote on unionization next month
If the election is successful, the warehouse
would be only the second Amazon site in the U.S. to unionize.
Amazon warehouse workers at a site in North Carolina will vote next month on
whether to join a union, setting the stage for the company's latest labor
battle.
Workers at the Garner, North Carolina, facility will cast their ballots from
Feb. 10 to Feb. 15, according to a Tuesday post on X by Carolina Amazonians
United for Solidarity and Empowerment, the group seeking to organize staffers.
Representatives from Amazon and the National Labor Relations Board didn't
immediately respond to requests for comment.
Known as CAUSE, the grassroots group led by current and former employees has
been working to organize Amazon employees at the warehouse, which is located in
a suburb about 10 miles south of Raleigh, for the past three years.
If the election is successful, the warehouse, known as RDU1, would be only
the second Amazon site in the U.S. to unionize. Workers at Amazon's largest
warehouse in New York City voted to join the Amazon Labor Union in 2022, but the
group struggled to negotiate a contract with Amazon, and last June, the ALU
voted to affiliate with the Teamsters.
A handful of union elections were held at Amazon warehouses in the U.S. in
recent years but employees have either rejected unionization or the results
continue to be disputed in lengthy court battles. Last November, a federal
labor judge ordered a third re-run election at an Amazon warehouse in Bessemer,
Alabama, after ruling the company improperly interfered in the vote.

Record-Breaking Online Shopping Over the
Holidays
Holiday shoppers spent global record $1.2 trillion online
But $122 billion in returns could dampen
holiday profits, according to new insights from Salesforce.
Mobile and social commerce drove holiday sales that beat forecasts, according to
a Salesforce report released Monday. The data indicates
holiday retail sales reached $282 billion in the U.S., up 4% year over
year, and $1.2 trillion globally, a 3% rise from last year.
Both retailers and consumers used AI to enhance the shopping experience
with elements like product recommendations, targeted offers and personalized
customer order support. AI and agents influenced 19%, or $229 billion, of all
online holiday season orders, per the report.
However, the rate of returns for online purchases also rose by 28% to
$122 billion globally from last year. Consumer behaviors like bracketing and
try-on-hauls may affect profit margins as the total figure for returns may rise
to $133 billion, Salesforce said.

The

Depot was previously banned at other Home Depots
A man who is a suspect in a Fairfield Twp. shoplifting incident that
escalated to robbery when a 65-year-old employee was knocked down is in
the Butler County Jail facing a felony charge. Brandon McCarty, 43,
entered Home Depot in Fairfield Twp. on Aug. 20 and attempted to steal
power tools, according to the Butler County Sheriff's Office and the
Fairfield Township Police report. While fleeing, McCarty pushed down the
female employee, according to the police report. The merchandise was
dropped at the store before the suspect escaped. McCarty was developed
as a suspect using store video, a description and flock cameras used to
track a rental car. The sheriff's office became involved in the case
when Sheriff Richard Jones was shopping in the store and was approached
by an employee about the case, according to BCSO officials. On Oct. 28,
McCarty was charged with robbery, a second-degree felony, and two counts
of misdemeanor theft. The charge was increased due to the alleged
assault on the employee. "He is known to loss prevention in the area
and has been banned from numerous Home Depots," said Butler County
Sheriff's Chief Deputy Anthony Dwyer. "The sheriff has a thing about
these bold thieves who just do what they want and corporations that just
deal with it and tack the price onto (consumers)," he said.

Monroe, MI: Woman arrested for pushing 8-year-old son into store's glass door,

A 32-year-old woman was arrested for child abuse and property damage inside a
Monroe grocery store on Jan. 7. Police say the woman shoved her 8-year-old son
into a glass door, breaking it at Town Square Foods. According to dispatch, a
female subject had broken the business's front door. An in-store surveillance
video captured the following events, although the suspect had left before the
police arrived. However, she and her children were later found at a nearby
business. Police say that at about 4:20 p.m., the woman was in the store
shopping with multiple children when she grabbed her 8-year-old son by the head
and neck and pushed him onto a countertop. She held him there with his feet off
the ground, according to witnesses. "At that point, she lets loose and pushes
him away from her," said the Monroe police report. "The female tried grabbing
his face again, but he turned away. "Moments later, the female can be observed
pushing her son's entire body into a glass door, causing the glass to break."
Police identified the woman as a transient from the area. The woman cooperated
with the investigation but blamed her actions on her son's behavior.

Networking has always been a key to career development and finding that next
job. However, if you're not careful it can also limit you, eliminate you and
even work against you. If your network is comprised of executives doing exactly
what you do, then you may have competition and may even find some working
against you. You've got to broaden and expand your network outside your
immediate group and establish relationships outside your company and your
professional circle. Remembering that quantity is no substitute for quality and,
as in any mutually beneficial relationship, what you bring to the table for them
is as important as what they bring to the table for you.
