LOS ANGELES — Angel knew from the moment he raised his hand with a whistle and shouted “Labor!” at a white van pulling into the Home Depot parking lot full of workers last Friday that something felt wrong. His creeping suspicion exploded into full-blown fear just as the doors of the van opened and masked agents began pouring out.

“La migra!” Angel and another day laborer yelled. More than 100 men and women standing in the parking lot began to run. Six migrants who said they were present recounted how federal immigration authorities began handcuffing anyone they could grab in one of several raids in the city that would spark a wave of unrest and leave immigrant workers of all stripes jolted.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation was one of several Friday in Los Angeles that drew widespread criticism from elected leaders and community activists in a city that is home to one of the largest undocumented immigrant communities in the country. As word spread, protesters hit the streets to confront the officers and denounce their actions as a broad attack against immigrant families. The indignation continued into Sunday as officers fired tear gas at demonstrators outside a downtown building where some National Guard troops mobilized by President Donald Trump had been stationed.

The hardware store parking lot was empty for the first 24 hours after the raid. The immigration sweep spooked many day laborers who said they could not recall another enforcement action in which people had been detained so seemingly arbitrarily. But by Sunday, they began to return. Their numbers were far fewer but, they said, they showed up because they had to. Helmeted police in riot gear turned out on Friday evening in a tense confrontation with protesters in downtown Los Angeles, after a day of federal immigration raids in which dozens of people across the city were reported to be taken into custody.

Around 3 p.m. Pacific, a crowd of dozens gathered in the Fashion District near downtown Los Angeles after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents appeared at an apparel manufacturer there. Dozens of federal agents arrived in riot gear to disperse the crowd and clear a path for two white passenger vans leaving the area. The operation was one of three immigration raids on Friday in Los Angeles.

Later in the afternoon, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Los Angeles Federal Building, calling for an end to immigration raids in the city.

Early in the standoff, some protesters hurled chunks of broken concrete toward officers, and police responded by firing volleys of tear gas and pepper spray. Police also fired "flash-bang" concussion rounds. It was not clear whether there were any immediate arrests.

Clashes in Los Angeles between federal agents and people protesting immigration raids continued into its third day on Sunday. Around 300 National Guard members are in the city after President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of 2,000 troops, a move sharply criticized as inflammatory by California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Harrods, Co-op, Marks & Spencer (M&S) and now Adidas have all experienced damaging cyber attacks in recent weeks, which have sent shock waves through the retail industry. M&S alone has warned of a £300 million ($405 million) hit on profits. The attack, which began over the Easter weekend, also wiped more than £750 million ($1 billion) off its market capitalization.

On 30th April, the Co-op also fell victim, reporting a few days later that hackers had accessed a “significant” amount of customer data. Then on 2nd May, Harrods also experienced a cyber attack, although in this instance, they managed to prevent any malicious intrusion.

In the M&S incident, third-party service provider Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has reportedly launched an internal investigation to determine whether it was the gateway by which the hackers gained access.

It all points to a vulnerability amongst retail businesses, despite the fact that the threat from cyber attacks has existed for many years. But why are retail businesses being targeted?

“Retailers are prime targets for cybercriminals due to the vast amounts of personal, financial, and other sensitive data they manage. For malicious actors, access to this data is like gold dust: highly valuable and potentially extremely lucrative” Marc Rivero, Lead Security Researcher in the Global Research & Analysis Team at Kaspersky, told Fortune.

Rivero commented, “As seen in the M&S attack, social engineering allows attackers to bypass sophisticated cybersecurity measures by exploiting human error. These ‘human hacking’ tactics manipulate users into clicking malicious links, disclosing sensitive information, or granting access to restricted systems”.

“Simply put, data opens doors. It enables fraud, fuels targeted phishing campaigns, and can even be leveraged to infiltrate other businesses within the supply chain. This makes retailers not just lucrative targets, but also strategically valuable within the broader digital ecosystem”. fortune.com

Malicious actors are using deepfakes and voice-cloning technology to target senior executives in both the workplace and personal spaces.

Corporate executives are facing a rise in impersonation-based cyberattacks aimed at gaining access to their home networks and putting them and their families at risk of personal harm, security researchers and other experts warn.

The increase in threat activity is connected to the growing sophistication of voice-cloning and deepfake technology, which allows attackers to send out fake videos and messages claiming to be from trusted contacts, such as senior executives at the targets’ companies. After breaching their targets, the attackers use their privileged access to further dupe the victims’ colleagues and engage in corporate espionage or extortion.

The rise in impersonation attacks against executives comes as the fatal shooting of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in 2024 heightens business leaders’ fears for their personal safety and that of their families.

In a Ponemon Institute survey sponsored by BlackCloak, a security firm specializing in digital protection, slightly more than half of security professionals said hackers personally targeted an executive at their organization this year, up from 43% two years ago.

Approximately 40% respondents said an executive was targeted in a deepfake attack this year, up from about one-third in 2023. The study shows that the impersonation of trusted contacts is a common attack vector, with hackers requesting payments or confidential information under the guise of a security incident. cybersecuritydive.com

Security teams are overwhelmed by a flood of alerts, most of which lack the context needed to accurately assess and respond to threats, according to ARMO.

Respondents report receiving an average of 4,080 security alerts per month – or 136 alerts per day – related to potential cloud-based attacks, with 61% handling between 1,001 and 5,000 alerts monthy. Yet despite this deluge, the average number of true security incidents per year is just 7, meaning it takes an average of 6,994 alerts to uncover one bona fide incident.

This “needle in a haystack” challenge is the result of different tools raising “their perspective” of the same event, false positives, and a lack of contextual information – such as asset sensitivity, exploitability, and behavioral baselines – that would help SOC teams quickly zero in on high-risk events. Without context, even benign activity can trigger alarms, stretching resources thin.

Montvale police arrested eight people in a rapid series of incidents Thursday that began with a major shoplifting bust at a Lululemon store and continued with arrests at a local grocery and a bank — all within a span of a few hours. The first arrest happened at approximately 1:40 p.m. when Officer Maciej Zagaja spotted four individuals walking through the Farm View parking lot carrying armfuls of Lululemon clothing, with hangers and alarm tags still attached, Police Chief Douglas McDowell said. Zagaja detained 30-year-old Vincent Browning of Allentown, Pa., and radioed a description of three women fleeing the scene. Officers quickly apprehended Delashay Gore, 27, Dilice Sears, 36, and Ayanna Dozier, 25, all of Staten Island. The group had stolen $5,906 worth of merchandise from the athleticwear store. All four were charged with shoplifting and resisting arrest. Browning also faces an additional charge of hindering apprehension after giving police a false name.
