How Long Before Amazon Begins Selling
'Surveillance as a Service'?
It certainly appears that Amazon's continued encroachment into the
residential security arena is primed to grow by leaps and bounds - block by
block - using drones for monitoring home safety.
At least that is what the mega retailer envisions in a recently awarded
United States patent that details how "[a]n unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)
may perform a surveillance action at a property of an authorized party."
Originally filed in 2015, the patent explains how Amazon's UAVs could be
employed to spot potential life-safety threats such as fires or even open garage
doors, broken windows and the like, prior to alerting property owners.
These electric drones fly up to 15 miles and deliver packages under five pounds
to customers in less than 30 minutes. "And, with the help of our world-class
fulfillment and delivery network, we expect to scale Prime Air both quickly and
efficiently, delivering packages via drone to customers within months," explains
Jeff Wilke, Amazon CEO of global consumer, in a blog post.

Organized Crime Groups Becoming More Professional & Harder to Detect
New Counterfeiting Report Warns That Fake Trade is Growing
Most counterfeiting is carried out by ever more professional, organised crime
networks, which can reap large profits while running relatively few risks. So
says a first EU-wide
intellectual property crime threat assessment from the European Union's
policing agency,
Europol, and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
It concludes: "More organised crime groups are specialising in one particular
crime, producing better quality counterfeit goods, controlling the whole
marketing process from production, to distribution, to the points of sale,
most often under the pretence of legitimacy. They have also made better use of
their available resources, for example using illegal laboratories and the same
skilled workers for synthesising both counterfeit medicines and drugs."
The threat assessment also stresses that, as well as the traditional categories
of counterfeited clothes, footwear and luxury products, there is a growing
trade in fake products which have the potential to damage human health. An
example of this would be the trade in counterfeit medicines for the
treatment of serious illnesses, which appears to be increasing.
Fake goods are increasingly shipped via small parcels and express couriers,
harder for enforcement authorities to detect. Counterfeiters continue to exploit
the anonymity the internet; but don't need to use the 'darknet'. Counterfeit
goods that are less obviously illegal, especially clothing, cosmetics,
electronics and pharmaceuticals, continue to be mostly sold on the surface web,
on widely available trusted platforms and by online pharmacies, according to the
report.

and headsets, is becoming a mainstay of major retailers, for a variety of
scenarios. Originally seen as a method of safely and affordably placing workers
in critical situations - think hospital operating rooms or robberies - more
brands, from Walmart to Lowe's, are finding virtual reality as a proven method
for teaching old-fashioned customer service.
According to
research by Capterra, nearly 33% of small and midsize U.S. businesses are
expected use virtual reality in employee training by 2021, with projections it
will get employees up to full productivity 50% faster than traditional
instruction. Because the technology replaces actual in-store equipment and is
getting pretty affordable - estimates are a virtual reality-ready laptop can

$174 Million Paid Over Background Check Lawsuits
Employers resolving class-action lawsuits over alleged background check
violations paid out a total of $174 million, a news
report says.
The companies that provided those reports to employers paid another $152 million
when they were sued directly by individuals for allegedly violating the Fair
Credit and Reporting Act (FCRA).
Forty employers have paid out $1 million or more in FCRA employment settlements
since 2011. The database includes settlements involving:

Treating the #MeToo Movement as an Opportunity to Create Better Workplaces
HR professionals and organizational leaders should treat the eruption of
such mandates as an opportunity-not an obligation, said Glen Kraemer, an
attorney with Hirschfeld Kraemer in Santa Monica, Calif.
Sexual-Harassment Claims on the Rise
HR professionals and the federal government are seeing more sexual-harassment
claims since the #MeToo movement went viral in October 2017. Thirty-six percent
of HR professionals who responded to a 2018 SHRM survey said the number of
sexual-harassment allegations they received increased between 2017 and 2018.
Training Considerations
Employers should move toward a more results-oriented training program that
features fresh content and new instructional methods. The focus should be less
on liabilities and how to avoid them, and more on the behaviors and
communications that can create the perception of harassment and bullying,
Kraemer said.
Multistate Employer Policies and Programs
Employers should consider adopting the law of the location that is most robust
in protecting the rights of employees, Kraemer said. For example, multistate
employers with operations in California may incorporate the state's broader
definition of hostile work environment into their policies for all locations.

NRF: Technology is dramatically improving
consumers' shopping experience
Consumers are embracing the use of retail technology to improve their shopping
experience, according to the latest issue of the
Consumer View report released today by the National Retail Federation.
"Technology has become part of our everyday lives, and consumers are open to
adopting technologies that make shopping easier," NRF Vice President for
Research Development and Industry Analysis Mark Mathews said. "Retailers know
this and are embracing investments in technologies that improve customer service
and the customer experience whether it's online, in store or on mobile devices."
According to the report, 63 percent of consumers say retail technologies and
innovations have improved their shopping experience on mobile devices while 66
percent said they have done so in stores and 80 percent online.
The report found that there are numerous opportunities for retailers to simplify
shoppers' path to making a purchase. Consumers are interested in technologies
that show whether a product is in stock (55 percent), help them compare prices
or read reviews (49 percent), make it easier to find a product or its location
(47 percent) or try an item before buying it (38 percent).

Payment-Card Fraud Funds Terrorism and Other Transnational Crimes
New Research from Terbium Labs Finds an
Undeniable Link Between Payment Fraud and Criminal Financing Worldwide
 Researchers
at the premier dark web data intelligence company, Terbium Labs, have released
the findings of new research that examines the deeply intertwined nature of
payment fraud and transnational crime. Results from the report illustrate the
far-reaching effect of payment fraud - where and how stolen payment data is used
to either fund or launder the proceeds from large-scale, pernicious criminal
activity across the world.
The research features geographical breakdowns and real-world case studies of how
payment-card fraud is used to launder money by organized crime syndicates;
subsidize the costs of trafficking in drugs, guns and humans; and provide
material support for terrorist groups at levels in the billions of dollars.
A summary of key findings from the research follows:

North America has the highest rate of terrorism
linked fraud cases, with more than seven times as many cases as Europe.

EA Origin had a vulnerability that left 300
million players potentially exposed
EA had to step up its game after researchers found an EA Origin vulnerability
that could have exposed millions of people to account takeovers. The flaw
exposed more than 300 million players on popular online games such as
Battlefield, Madden NFL, NBA Live and FIFA, according to security researchers
from Check Point and CyberInt.
The security flaw would have allowed hackers to hijack people's accounts without
stealing their login or passwords. That's because it would steal a Single
Sign-On authorization token instead, which could give complete control for
hackers. Access tokens are an authentication method similar to passwords, as
codes generated by services to keep you logged in.

Tech teams will continue to grow in the second half of the year, but finding the
right talent won't be easy, according to Robert Half Technology's State of U.S.
Tech Hiring research. Of the IT hiring decision makers polled, 67% plan to

Threats Continue to Grow as Attackers Evolve, Innovate
Threat actors increasingly using malicious URLs, HTTPS domains,
file-sharing sites in email attacks, FireEye says.
Email continues to be an extremely effective vector for delivering malicious
content because of how adept attackers have become at tricking users over the
years.
The latest examples include the increasing use of malicious URLs in emails
rather than attachments, a trend toward use of HTTPS domains for hosting
malicious sites, and new variants of impersonation fraud.
FireEye recently analyzed a sample set of 1.3 billion emails for the first three
months of 2019 and counted more URL-based email attacks than attachment-based
ones in the first quarter.
URL attacks involve emails with embedded links pointing to a malware download
site or a phishing site designed to steal a user's account credentials or credit
card data. Emails containing such links are often harder to detect and block
than ones with malicious attachments, according to FireEye.

expert calls out Costco and other retailers on bag searches
Security specialist Brian Farr contacted CBC News after he read last week's
story about a
B.C. man who filed a human rights complaint because the store checked his
backpack and not women's purses.
For Farr, who has worked in the security industry for about 25 years as a loss
prevention agent, supervisor and now a freelance contractor, the issue isn't
about whether the man was discriminated against - it's about the fact that in
most cases retailers, by law, aren't allowed to search customers' bags.
Unless a security guard has witnessed a crime, Farr and other experts say,
bag checks could violate a person's Charter rights, which protect against
unreasonable search or seizure. There are also provisions under the Criminal
Code that outline the rules under which police, security guards and other
citizens must follow in order to arrest someone.
The Charter applies to people and institutions representing the state, but
Vancouver lawyer Kyla Lee, who has represented clients who were wrongfully
accused of theft and detained, says case law suggests that private security
guards are sometimes seen as acting on the state's behalf.
"Stores don't have that much power to conduct searches of customers bags or
searches of any belongings when they're leaving the store," Lee said.
CBC News contacted Costco, but the store declined to comment.

Vancouver mall offers homeless a safe place to sleep
 It's
not uncommon to see security guards removing homeless people from business
fronts at night. Vancouver's Pacific Centre is taking a different approach -
they're inviting those with nowhere to go to come sleep on their property.
The company is also opening its doors and offering the facilities up to people
in need first thing in the morning.
Homeless advocate with the Union Gospel Mission, Jeremy Hunka says when homeless
people feel like people care they are more likely to reach out for help. "If
businesses reach out and even just treat people with more compassion, it's more
likely for that exchange," Hunka says. "That relationship can be great for
both sides."
He adds for the most vulnerable people, a little bit of compassion can go a long
way, and that compassion can be in the form of a safe place to sleep or the use
of facilities. Night shift employees on the property will also conduct life
safety checks and are being trained on how to de-escalate confrontations.

'Retail Apocalypse' in Canada a Myth: Expert
It's not all doom and gloom in that sector of the economy. In fact, the retail
industry has remained resilient particularly for those retailers who have been
successful in adapting to the burgeoning growth in ecommerce. Kruti Desai,
Manager of National Research Insights with Data Solutions at the Altus Group,
said there is a clear message in all of this - retail isn't dead, it's just
evolving. And the retail landscape is also changing.
"Yes, we have seen several store closures happen in the last few years but these
are also very traditional retailers that left behind larger spaces and now with
changing consumer behaviours, preferences, changing habits, these changes are
driving the changes in retail which means a lot of these spaces which were left
behind that were vacant are now being transformed and they're being carved out
into more innovative store designs that cater to some of the needs from
customers," she said.
Ecommerce is also playing an increasingly more important role in the retail
landscape. Its growth has created more demand for logistics processes as well as
warehouse and fulfillment centres. It's also led to more adoption and adaptation
to a seamless and efficient omnichannel experience for consumers.

Kitchener, ON: One airlifted to hospital, 2 others hurt in shopping plaza

person was airlifted to a trauma centre after a reported shooting at a Kitchener
shopping plaza. A total of three people were injured, one seriously, but police
have not confirmed whether any were shot. Police say they received multiple
calls from people who heard gunshots at 500 Fairway Road, near Wilson, around
5:40 p.m. Witnesses in the area say they saw a man lying on the ground in the
plaza. Just before 6:30 p.m. another person was seen on a stretcher being put
into an ambulance. The reason for the shooting is also unclear. Police say
they're also concerned that this happened during a busy time of day when many
people would have been in the area.

Nanaimo, BC: Man charged with armed robbery, stealing jewelry worth $21K
Nanaimo RCMP said Friday the suspect is accused of entering the Best Buy Liquor
Store on Jingle Pot Road on June 5 and pointing a firearm at the clerk. The
suspect, who had his face covered, stole money from the till and fled the store
without being apprehended by officers who attended the scene. Police said the
same suspect also stole four rings with a combined value of roughly $21,000 from

Amazon to extend Prime Day to two days
Amazon is giving customers two full days to shop its annual sales extravaganza,
now entering its fifth year.
Amazon announced that Prime Day will start at midnight (Pacific Time) on Monday,
July 15 and - for the first time ever - run for 48 hours (compared to 36 hours
in 2018.) The online giant is hoping to build on the success of last year's
Prime Day, which Amazon said was its biggest ever and during which it sold more
than 100 million products despite an initial technical glitch.

Study: Shoppers set to spend more than ever on
Prime Day
Amazon Prime Day 2019 is looking to be the most lucrative shopping event yet -
and not just for Amazon.

according to a new study of U.S. and U.K. Prime members from Profitero, which
revealed that the annual shopping extravaganza is gaining more steam with each
passing year. Seventy-six percent of Prime members in the U.S. are planning to
shop on Prime Day this year, up from 63% last year.
Retailers beyond Amazon will also profit. While 98% of U.S. Prime members who

to shop for deals at other online retailers. And 58% of U.S. Prime members

to Prime Day Competitors

results of its newest study, exploring the shopping habits of 1,000 U.S.
consumers who are planning to shop "Black Friday in July" deals this year.
Initially sparked by Amazon five years ago, "Black Friday in July" refers to the
wave of sales that now crop up around Prime Day both from the retail giant and
competing retailers hoping to gain a portion of consumers' spend that led to
over
$4 billion in sales on Amazon last year. Bazaarvoice's research explains
what drives shoppers' behavior around Amazon Prime Day and why they are opting
to shop with retailers offering similar mid-summer sales.
Based on shopping activity across more than 6,000 retail sites, including those
of top U.S. retailers, Bazaarvoice saw a 21% increase in visitor traffic during
Prime Day 2018 in comparison to typical traffic. Additionally, the number of
shoppers increased by 15%, and the number of orders increased by 11%.
Key findings from Bazaarvoice's new study include:
● With major retailers offering competing "Black Friday in July" sales, Prime
Day shopping now extends beyond Amazon - Outside of Amazon, consumers plan
to shop at Walmart (44%), Target (40%), Best Buy (24%) and Macy's (18%) around

MI: Bystander Jumps On Moving Vehicle, Tries To Stop Shoplifters At Lowe's
A bystander who wasn't too happy that people were stealing power tools took
things into her own hands and launched herself onto their getaway vehicle. The
incident unfolded Monday afternoon at the Lowe's store on Carpenter Road in
Ypsilanti, along US-23 just north of I-94. Marcel Hillier was in the parking lot
when he heard the security alarms and saw customers running out of the store.
One woman then threw herself on the hood of a silver sedan that was trying to
flee the scene. Other vehicles tried to help stop the suspects, but the woman
ultimately got off of the car and they fled the scene. Police are still looking
for the suspects, described only as three men.

Authorities are searching for three burglars who were caught on camera early
Tuesday smashing a door at a Harley-Davidson dealership here and making off with
two pricey motorcycles. Surveillance video shared on social media by Gold Star
Harley-Davidson shows the thieves dressed in motorcycle helmets throwing a rock
and breaking a glass door about 3:20 a.m. at the dealership. In the video, the
three men then scramble into the store. Two soon ride through the broken doorway
on motorcycles. The third robber struggles to start a series of bikes before
giving up and running out of the showroom.

Four Arrested for $1,600 theft from TJ Maxx in
Norwood
Store security called police Monday around 5:30 p.m. to report six people who
were gathering merchandise and putting inside a suitcase they had selected from
the store. Security personnel said the group then left with items without paying
and got into a white Ford Expedition. Norwood police were able to stop the
vehicle before it left the parking lot of Rookwood Commons, but the occupants
ran from the vehicle. After a foot chase, all six people were apprehended, 2
were not charged. Police said about $1,600 in merchandise was recovered.

A man is wanted for breaking into a pawn shop in Morris Heights, getting away
with thousands of dollars. Police say the suspect, who got away with over $6,000
in cash, was caught on a surveillance camera. Authorities say the man used a
shovel to break into a pawn shop on University Avenue on June 7 around 6 a.m.

Gunman either Disgruntled or Former Employee

gunman who killed two workers and then himself at a Ford dealership in the San
Francisco Bay area Tuesday had apparently just been fired, witnesses said.
Police confirmed that he appears to have been either a disgruntled or former
employee. Police in Morgan Hill, about 25 minutes southeast of San Jose,
responded to multiple reports of shots fired inside the dealership minutes after
6 p.m. When officers arrived, they found one man dead on the ground with what
appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound and a handgun next to him, police
and the city said in a statement. Police said that officers were directed to two
victims, both of them dealership employees who were found dead from gunshot
wounds.

NC: Police identify store clerk shot and killed during robbery at gas station
A store clerk was shot and killed just days before his birthday during a robbery
at a west Charlotte gas station early Monday morning, according to
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. The victim has been identified as 50-year-old
Ismael Doumbia, police said. His family has been notified of his death. Those
who knew Doumbia said he was a loving father and husband. The senseless deadly
shooting happened around 3:20 a.m. Monday, June 3 at a Shell Gas Station located
in the 2700 block of Freedom Drive.

Manhattan, NY: Man fatally shot in the neck
inside Harlem deli across the street from hospital
A 29-year-old Bronx man was gunned down inside a Harlem deli on Monday night,
police said. Leroy Phinazee was shot in the neck and shoulder inside Funfair
Deli on Lenox Avenue near West 137th Street, officials said. The man was rushed
to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem where he succumbed to his injuries. Phinazee
was not employed at the deli.

Visalia man with a lengthy rap sheet was convicted of yet another crime. This
time, prosecutors are hoping they don't see the thief back in court, or the
streets, for at least six years. A jury found Jason Hounihan, 42, guilty of
burglarizing a Visalia jewelry store. He was convicted of one count of burglary
and two counts of vandalism causing more than $400 in damage. Each count is a
felony.
Wednesday wasn't the first time Hounihan's fate rested in the hands of 12
people. Hounihan has a prior strike for assault with a firearm in 1997 and
convictions for felony weapons possession in 1999, two felony drug convictions
in 2008, burglary in 2014, resisting an officer in 2014, and bringing drugs into
the jail in 2018. In February, Hounihan was convicted of misdemeanor possession
of burglary tools and theft. His most recent run-in with the law was caught on
camera the morning of March 24, according to prosecutors.
