Fueling the Ongoing "Arms Race"
"We want to be the employer of choice"
Walmart kicks off shareholders' meeting with focus on associates
First, uniform guidelines have changed. Associates will now be able to wear
jeans and shirts of any color to work, although the store's signature blue apron
remains a staple. In addition, managers can wear sneakers, a perk already
enjoyed by associates.
There's also a new scheduling app that will let employees have remote access
to their schedule and swap shifts with another associate, all through a mobile
device. Walmart is also addressing a much-requested associate need by
offering an option for schedules with set days and hours each week, and locked
in on a quarterly basis.
New employee training programs are being developed using virtual reality.
There's also a newly developed video game designed for in-store training
and engagement. Classes taken through Walmart's training Academies will be
translated into college credit as part of this program.
But the crowning glory for Walmart, is the launch of a new educational benefits
program
that will fund college degrees for associates, paying for all tuition,
books and other costs beyond financial aid. Employees pay just $1 toward the
total to have "some skin in the game."
"In combination with increased pay, training and improved career opportunities,
Walmart is recognizing the positive impact across the board of a stable
workforce, and increases the pressure on other companies inside and outside
of retail as this heats up the competition for quality employees. This new
benefit escalates the ongoing 'arms race' for employees in retail."

Editor's Note: In a tough job market where every retailer is competing
for the best talent this is a game changer industry wide throughout North
America. And obviously includes LP/AP associates.
Walmart Combines Real Estate and Central
Operations in One Role
In a push to streamline its sprawling business, Walmart Inc. Mark Ibbotson, the
executive vice president of U.S. central operations at the world's largest
retailer, will take over the company's realty division.
Walmart's real estate arm includes 3,100 employees and manages a budget of
about $8 billion, according to its website. Ibbotson will take over the
division in addition to overseeing departments including innovation, employee
communication, online grocery pickup and asset protection.
Walmart has taken several steps over the past year to reduce the complexity of
its operations and reduce costs. That's included cutting jobs at its
Bentonville, Arkansas, headquarters, shuttering 63 Sam's Club warehouses and
consolidating its U.S. business down to four divisions from six. It also removed
about 3,500 store co-managers, while adding other positions to supervise
fast-growing areas like online grocery shopping.

6 people killed in four-day period in Indy, 3
were at local retailers
There were six people killed in Indianapolis over a four-day period that
included Memorial Day weekend, and three of those victims were killed at or near
their place of employment.
The latest murder happened Tuesday morning when
an employee at a Shell gas station was shot and killed in the parking lot
around 5 a.m.
On Saturday, an employee at McDonald's was killed in the CVS parking lot next
door while he was taking a break from work.
And on Sunday, an
employee at Dollar General was killed during what police believe was a robbery.
IMPD Deputy Chief Chris Bailey says the bottom line is that it's easy for a
criminal to get a gun - and they're quick to pull the trigger - even over minor
arguments.
"We could put an officer in every single store in the city," said Bailey. "There
are certain types of violence that unfortunately is going to be perpetrated
because no matter how many cops you have, you cannot police someone's
wickedness."
That's why customers have to protect themselves. "Run, hide and if you have to -
then fight," said Bailey.

Need an entry-level job at a store? It can be
harder now
Across all entry-level retail jobs, the number of skills being demanded rose
from 2010 to 2016, according to an analysis done for The Associated Press by
Burning Glass Technologies, which scours 25 million job postings. A greater
emphasis on customer service and communications skills for cashier, stock clerk
and sales floor support jobs. And for many other entry-level jobs, employers
want even more skills, like the ability to use customer relations software like
Salesforce. Even forklift operators are being asked to be proficient in
inventory management software.
This has major consequences for workers without college degrees or vocational
training trying to get an economic foothold. A decade ago, workers, especially
young ones, could start as cashiers and move up to become store managers or even
higher. But now, it's harder to even get in the door.
"The bottom may be coming out of the career ladder," said Burning Glass CEO Matt
Sigelman.

Rampant Brazil Cargo Theft Disrupts Retail, Drives Up

60 Heists a Day - 22,000 Cargo Robberies in 2 States Alone
LY
Brazil Cargo Theft is Out of Control
Last year, 22,000 cargo robberies were reported in two states alone - Sao Paulo
and Rio de Janeiro - home to the country's two largest cities. That is about 60
heists a day, a record figure that has almost doubled since 2012. Authorities
blame criminal gangs preying on shipments. Losses are estimated at
hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
All manner of businesses are targets, but authorities say bandits favor
consumer goods that are easy to fence. That is posing a particular challenge
to Brazil's fast-growing e-commerce trade. Security costs are squeezing
profit margins and forcing retailers and logistics firms to adjust their
strategies to succeed in Latin America's largest economy.
Electronics retailer Via Varejo SA, for example, has developed a
satellite-tracking system to keep tabs on its trucks. And it dispatches armed
guards to accompany many shipments, logistics chief Marcelo Lopes told Reuters.
The tricky terrain will be a test for Amazon. The world's largest online
retailer is gearing up for a major expansion in Brazil after about six years of
peddling mostly e-books and digital movies here.
Amazon declined to discuss its strategy. But retail veterans said the Seattle
company had better buckle up.

UK: Nonprofit Helps Retailers Tackle Repeat Offenders
With New Civil Injunction Service
National Business Crime Solution (NBCS), a not for profit initiative that
enables the sharing of data between law enforcement agencies and the business
community in order to reduce crime, in conjunction with Tees Law, has
announced the launch of a new initiative that will help retailers tackle the
problem of repeat offenders. This new service can issue exclusion notices and
civil injunctions, which are proven to act as a workable deterrent.
NBCS can now help to identify an offender and, in the first instance, issue an
exclusion notice, which withdraws the implied invitation to enter one or more of
the retailer's premises and the notice can be served at home, at work, or even
in the street. If the exclusion notice is subsequently breached, NBCS can work
to obtain additional details of offences committed by those individuals across
its membership database in order to cross-reference their activities with other
members.
If the individual continues to offend the next step is to take out a civil
injunction. This is a civil order that is available in the county court for over
18s. To obtain an injunction the court must be satisfied that an individual has
engaged in, or threatens to engage in conduct that is capable of causing
nuisance and annoyance in premises belonging to the retailer in question and the
implied right to enter that retailer's premises has been withdrawn. An
injunction can include a power of arrest in cases where the perpetrator has used
or threatened violence, or if there is a significant risk of harm to others. If
a perpetrator fails to change their behaviour they can receive more serious
sanctions, and if they do not obey the order they will be considered guilty of
contempt of court and could be fined or sent to prison.

Effects of E.coli Outbreak in Lettuce Ripple Through U.S. Food-Supply Chain
A deadly E.coli outbreak tied to romaine lettuce has shaken consumers' faith in
the nation's favorite salad green, resulting in millions of dollars in losses
for growers, retailers and restaurants.
More than six weeks into the outbreak, prices for romaine, historically the
most-sold salad green, have dropped by more than half. Grocers nationwide have
been clearing it from shelves in hundreds of stores. Several restaurants that
served romaine are facing lawsuits from customers, and wholesalers have had to
quickly round up kale and mesclun for restaurants that struck it from their
menus.

How Facebook protects data with physical security
Thorough cybersecurity takes more than tech: That's the thinking at Facebook,
where Chief Global Security Officer Nick Lovrien deploys physical
security to protect data. Yes, canine units and human guards stereotypically
keep people safe, but when properly integrated, physical security protects
information as well.
Acting as a final layer to a perimeter defense, Facebook's global security
data centers team guards intellectual property. It's an integrated approach
where even the company's office buildings are designed to put physical
protection between servers and the public.
"Everything we should do is based on ruthless prioritization," Lovrien says. "Move fast and build things." To speed development, the company has an open
office floorplan. "Nobody has an office at Facebook," he explains - "Mark,
Sheryl, CEO, COO, nobody." The business also doesn't issue employee badges,
meaning there are no physical keycards to separate staff from the 20,000
visitors streaming through Facebook facilities every day. That's an obvious risk
- not just for physical threats but for keeping those guests from grabbing data
while inside.
Lovrien admits a workplace where so many guests come in or out is "obviously a
different approach to creating that safe and secure environment, but the risk
level that that has technically is offset by the collaboration and the output
and the impact that we feel it enables." In other words, the business needs open
offices, so security has to deal with it.
For starters, within that open environment, every location has "secured
spaces" - areas Lovrien describes as shared areas beyond access control points.
This, of course, includes the data centers.

The Limits of Big Data in Compliance
More companies are making use of big data to try to keep them out of legal and
reputational trouble, but the technology has its limits-and making good use of
it is no simple matter, compliance professionals say.
Compliance teams are hiring more people with expertise in data analytics to help
them understand their computer systems, their data and what tools can help best
make use of that information, he said. Still, the task remains difficult.
"There's all these demands for metrics and data analytics and how do you get
more predictive and manage the risks, but meanwhile we see a lot of companies
struggling at the underlying level to get to that data," she said.
"The data can be used to potentially validate and to identify the seriousness of
that risk, and to perhaps predict when that risk is going to happen, but looking
at the data to identify that risk I think is a fallacy," said Mr. Lane.

$1 Million Data Ransom
Hackers threaten to reveal personal data of 90,000 Canadians caught in bank hack

customers of two Canadian banks unless the lenders pay a $1-million ransom for

On Monday, Bank of Montreal and online bank Simplii Financial - owned by CIBC

information of a combined 90,000 different account holders at the two banks was

The thieves said they accessed information such as names, account numbers,
passwords, security questions and answers, and even social insurance numbers and

Online Journey Hijacking
The Phenomenon Costing Retailers Hundreds Of Millions Of Dollars
Leading up to the holiday season, retailers spend significant time and
resources optimizing their customers' online shopping experience. Their
efforts seem to be working, as e-Commerce sales during this past holiday
season hit a record
$108.2 billion, a 14.7% increase from 2016, which was
$91.7 billion.
However, a
report analyzing 500 million web sessions found that online retailers
were still expected to lose up to $2.1 billion in sales during the 2017
holiday season. This is caused by a phenomenon called Online Journey
Hijacking, which involves unauthorized product ads injected into consumer
browsers while visiting retailer web sites.
Using tactics such as banner ads, pop-ups and in-text redirection, these
unauthorized ads distract the customer from the shopping experience,
effectively hijacking the customer to complete their transaction on a
competing web site.
So how can retail merchants and marketers better understand Online Journey
Hijacking, and how can they fight back?
First, take a look at what an infected
journey looks like to the user. Use a
browser infected with digital malware to look at their overall site
experience. This will let you see what approximately a quarter of your
visitors encounter when visiting your online store, and the different ways
this malware affects your online visitors. It will also show you where your
visitors are being hijacked to - and to which competitor sites.
Then, get the big picture to
understand the various ways your customers are being hijacked.
Break down what percentage of your page views include unauthorized ads, what
percentage of them are pointing to related products from your competitors,
as well as which pages throughout the journey are more likely to include
these ads. This will bring the bottom line impact of Online Journey
Hijacking into perspective for your business.
The good news? Innovations have emerged that use machine learning to
understand and identify user behavior on e-Commerce sites. These systems can
identify normal user activity and distinguish it from the behavior of
malware.

FCC asks Amazon and eBay to stop selling fake pay
TV boxes
On Friday, the Federal Communications Commission
sent a letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and eBay CEO Devin Wenig asking their
companies to help remove the listings for fake pay TV boxes from their
respective websites. These boxes often falsely bear the FCC logo, the letter
informed, and are used to perpetuate "intellectual property theft and consumer
fraud."
Amazon, Netflix and major Hollywood studios have gone after these box makers
through the court system already.
Amazon and eBay also proactively remove devices facilitating piracy from their
websites, the FCC acknowledged in its letter.
But the FCC wants the companies to do more, and faster, it seems.
"Unfortunately, despite your good work in this area, devices continue to make it
to consumers through your website," writes FCC Commissioner Mike O'Rielly. "Many
of these devices contain harmful malware that will most certainly be passed on
to the consumer. Moreover, the consumer may unwittingly believe that the device
is lawful since they were able to purchase it from a legitimate company."
The letter specifically
asks both Amazon and eBay to step up their enforcement, by "swiftly
removing" devices the FCC alerts them to;
it also asks the companies to provide the FCC with information about the
manufacturers, distributors and suppliers, when requested.

Making it new every day and getting energized - pumped up every day can be
difficult at times. But it's important to try to find that spark each and every
day to make sure you're adding value, getting things done, and motivating the
people around you. It's always great to drive home and think - where did the day
go because you were so busy and had so many things to get done, which usually
means you were pumped up and energized. But it's a terrible feeling when you
can't get out of first gear and the day drags on forever. Just remember,
oftentimes it's merely mind over matter and you make your own day and, quite
frankly, you're also making the day for a lot of people around you and they're
looking to you to set the pace.
Just a Thought,
Gus
