Montreal Multi-Brand Luxury Men’s Retailer Closes Amid Death Threat
Store Owner with Alleged Ties to the Mafia 'Flees for His Life'
The three-level
Giorgio Gruppo Roma
store at 1440 Peel Street in Montreal has
shuttered as its owner, Tony Elian, flees for his life. That’s
according to a
French language report over the weekend in TVA Nouvelles, which says that it has
sources who say that Montreal police have informed Mr. Elian to go into hiding
because his life is in danger, with
threats said to be linked to his many debts
to creditors.
The threats to Mr. Elian’s life follow other serious incidents. In the spring of
2017,
his car was firebombed
and in March of 2018,
he was shot with a shotgun in
his Peel Street store. The TVA Nouvelles report notes that last week, a moving
truck was parked in front of the shuttered Giorgio Gruppo Roma store.
Debts have plagued Mr. Elian’s business dealings since at least 2015. TVA
Nouvelles reports that there’s a long list of subcontractors claiming to be
unpaid for work done on a condominium building in nearby Westmount that was
developed by Mr. Elian’s company Cesare Immobilier. Between 2009 and 2014, Mr.
Elian was involved in a $1.1 million lawsuit with Frank Bertucci, who was
accused of trying to bribe a Revenue Canada representative with $150,000 for a
tax reduction.
Some are saying Mr. Elian had
ties to criminal entities in the Montreal area. He
was seen in photos with gangster Ducarme Joseph who was murdered in 2014, and he
attended the funeral of Italian-Canadian crime boss Vito Rizzuto in late 2013 —
Rizzuto is alleged to have been the leader of the Sicilian Mafia in Canada.
According to TVA Nouvelles, some are claiming that Giorgio Gruppo Roma was
claiming that it’s “made in Italy” fashions were actually produced in China.

UK: Robberies and Burglaries on the Decline at Co-op Stores
Following Spate of Ram-Raids
Robberies at Co-op food stores in Norfolk and Suffolk have dropped by 30pc since
the retailer rolled out a series of crime prevention measures.
New figures, released 12 months after a major crackdown began, show the number
of burglaries at the company's shops also went down by 6pc.
From last summer, stores were fitted with external motion detectors and a
centrally monitored CCTV system, allowing workers to call for assistance at the
touch of a button. The changes have resulted in a decline in robberies and
burglaries across the region, bucking a national trend which has seen similar incidents jump by 508pc
and 137pc respectively.
Numerous convenience stories in Norfolk and Suffolk have fallen foul of
robberies and burglaries in recent years, many of them Co-op stores.
In 2017, Co-op offered a reward of £20,000 for information relating to a spate
of ram-raids in locations including Wells, Rickinghall, Lakenheath and Red
Lodge.
Earlier this year, a man and a teenage boy were sentenced for their part in a
ram-raid in Kessingland which saw a cash machine stolen and a car driven at
police officers.
Co-op's new technology sits alongside a range of other tools including
GPS
trackers, stringent cash controls and additional ATM anchors designed to prevent
successful ram-raids.
Central England Co-op stores now have full CCTV coverage, increased security
guards provision and motion sensors which can be activated outside trading hours
and contact police if necessary.

Rochester, NY: Former CVS Employee Pleads Guilty To Stealing Over $2.5 Million
Dollars Worth Of Diabetic Test Strips
U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr. announced that Antonio Rivera, 35, of
Williamsville, NY, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A.
Wolford to wire fraud. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in
prison and a $250,000 fine.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Melissa Marangola, who is handling the case, stated that
since February 2007, the defendant was employed as a
Senior Assistant Purchasing Associate for CVS
Pharmacy. This position required Rivera to
order a variety of retail products sold by CVS, including diabetic test strips.
In July, 2018, CVS’s internal systems red flagged the purchasing of diabetic
test strips at a CVS located in Rochester, NY. A package located in the store’s
shipping area did not have a CVS label, included Rivera’s return address, and
came from a company with which CVS does not do business. A subsequent internal
investigation by CVS determined that Rivera routinely purchased diabetic test
strips in excessive amounts, well over the need for that CVS location. The audit
could not account for 20,203 boxes
purchased by Rivera, for a total financial loss of approximately $2,535,307.
The defendant ordered the excessive amounts of diabetic test strips and then
intercepted the shipments once they arrived. He then
sold the stolen product to a third party located
in the State of Florida. A forensic
accounting of Rivera’s bank accounts identified payments for the fraudulently
obtained diabetic test strips that were deposited into the defendant’s bank
accounts.

goods
Customs and other law enforcement authorities from 29 countries, coordinated by

of cultural goods. In total, 59 individuals were arrested and over 18,000
cultural goods seized, including archaeological items, furniture, coins,
paintings, musical instruments and sculptures. During the checks, objects that
may facilitate the trafficking of cultural goods, such as metal detectors were
also seized. The majority of the objects seized during the operation were from
European countries; however, more than 30 objects originated in countries
outside Europe such as Colombia, Egypt, Iraq and Morocco.

TJ Maxx apologizes for racially profiling Connecticut family
Retailer TJ Maxx apologized after a Connecticut family claimed they were
racially profiled in one of the chain’s stores. According to Melissa
Askew-Ferris, one of her sons was falsely identified for shoplifting earlier
this month while the family was at the store near Hartford, in Wethersfield.
While in the store, Askew-Ferris’ three sons were followed by employees until
leaving the store. An employee later identified one of the boys as a shoplifter
who had struck before the family arrived. However, security footage of the theft
showed no resemblance aside from both Askew-Ferris’ son and the thief being
black.
“We take this customer’s concerns very seriously and expect that all of our
customers will be treated with dignity and respect when shopping in our stores,"
the company said. "We have spoken with our customer to sincerely apologize that
this was not the experience of her and her family.”
The statement added that all employees would undergo unconscious bias training
in order to prevent similar incidents happening in the future.

Walmart launches new store-to-store driverless delivery pilot

Walmart continues analyzing how autonomous vehicles can move groceries
throughout its supply chain.
The discount giant’s latest pilot of self-driving vehicles in its grocery supply
chain is a test of an autonomous vehicle from Gatik. The Palo Alto, Calif.-based
startup specializes in providing autonomous vehicles for B2B short-haul
logistics.
In March, Arkansas passed legislation allowing for autonomous vehicles to
operate in the state. This enables Walmart to test an autonomous vehicle to move
customer orders on a two-mile route in Bentonville, where the company is
headquartered, between two of its stores.

Amazon may create new grocery business from ground up
An internal memo at Amazon.com circulated before the company’s acquisition of
Whole Foods envisioned a grocery store that emphasized fresh foods and prepared
meals while storing non-perishable items on a separate floor that would be
ordered online and delivered to customers at the checkout stand. After having
had mixed results with Whole Foods, Amazon may be considering opening a separate
grocery operation with some of the elements of its earlier vision.

Developing Admissions
An important, yet underused phase of an interview is developing information
after an initial admission. Too often, this phase of “development” is either
conducted without any structure or not at all. Development is often associated
with large case values, suggesting that a subject was implicated for the theft
of $1,000 but the interview resulted in a confession of $10,000. With these
types of confessions, the investigator MUST substantiate the $10,000 to a)
ensure it was actually missing, and b) that the subject is actually the guilty
party. However, truth be told, there is a lot more to “development” than just
expanded admissions. Investigators should be asking questions to understand a
larger scope, rather than a simple “I did it”. Here are a few suggestions of
what to look for...

Execs Cop to Data Dysfunction
Two-thirds of corporate leaders prefer to
rely on others for accessing and using data from their own tools
Generally speaking, to be successful today — a decade after “big data” entered
the business lexicon — a company must make data-informed decisions.
So, why are corporate executives hesitant to “get their hands dirty” by learning
how to manipulate data themselves, as opposed to relying only on data
scientists, IT managers, or those team members who do have an affinity for data?
In a new Deloitte survey of 1,048 executives at companies with more than 500
employees, two-thirds (67%) of respondents said they weren’t comfortable
accessing or using data from their tools and resources.
There’s even a fair amount of foot-dragging at companies with strong data-driven
cultures, among which 37% of survey participants expressed discomfort in a
hands-on approach to working with data.
Such executive reluctance is all the more curious considering the outperformance
of companies with the strongest cultural orientation toward data-driven insights
and decision-making. Among executives at those companies, 48% said they
outperformed their business targets, compared with just 22% among companies with
a more diluted data analytics culture.

Companies' 'Anonymized' Data May Violate GDPR, Privacy Regs
For more than two decades, researchers have chipped away at the assumption that
anonymized collections of data could protect the identities of research subjects
as long as the datasets did not include one of a score of different identifying
attributes.
In the latest research highlighting the ease of what is known as
"re-identification," three academic researchers have shown that 99.98% of
Americans could be re-identified from an otherwise anonymized dataset, if it
included 15 demographic attributes.
The findings suggests that even the current policies surrounding the protection
of customer identities, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR),
fall short of truly protecting citizens.
"Many companies think that, if it's anonymous, I don't need to secure it, but
the data is likely not as anonymous as they think," says Bruce Schneier.

How Restaurants Can Respond to the Rise in App Fraud
In April, a Canadian reporter brought attention to a recent rash of app hacking
that was costing McDonald’s customers thousands in fraudulent purchases. It’s
not an isolated incident. McDonalds along with Domino’s Pizza, Chipotle and
other restaurants over the years have had issues with fraudulent online or
mobile orders. While these problems most often arise from poor user security
hygiene, the overall security of restaurants’ apps could also be improved.
Most hacks originate with stolen access credentials, but it is a combination of
bad password hygiene on the users’ part and inadequate security mechanisms
behind an app that allow criminals to crack accounts with a relatively high
success rate.
Most restaurants probably work with independent software vendors to develop,
deploy and manage apps. Armed with an understanding of the ways hackers trick
apps into thinking their activity is legitimate, restaurants and their software
vendors can work together to put in place opt-in controls or activity alerts
that can help stop or identify account takeover attempts.

Counterfeit Products: Is There Any Way To Hold
Back The Flood?
The world is awash in counterfeit products; phony goods account for some 3.3%
of the world’s trade, and possibly a lot more. Pharmaceuticals, Apparel &
Accessories, car parts – if someone makes it, someone else is faking it.
This large-scale counterfeiting is thanks to the ever-growing e-commerce
environment. The anonymity, global outreach, ease of use, and the plethora
of online markets have made it easier than ever for sites to sell counterfeit
products and services. Unlike with the sale of “classic” illicit goods like
weapons, selling counterfeits entails less risk. Counterfeiting helps support
some of the world’s worst criminal groups – and many of the goods are
manufactured by forcing the most vulnerable, such as children, into forced
labor, according to the United Nations.
The effects of counterfeit products can be devastating – and dangerous. If a
pair of sneakers says Nike on them and they quickly fall apart due to
low-quality workmanship, that’s likely one fewer customer for Nike next time. If
the product is a phony prescription drug sold as the real thing, it could pose a
major health risk.
Counterfeiting is actually one of the main factors hindering the advancement of
technology and medicine. Companies spend millions of dollars attempting to
thwart counterfeiting. This money could otherwise be used for research on new
technologies and lifesaving medications. How can companies halt this flood of
counterfeits? Read more:

had abandoned a shopping cart because of unsatisfactory shipping options, while
39% of respondents have stopped shopping with an online retailer after a bad

consumer shopping satisfaction, nearly 50% of merchants respondents didn’t know
their online shopping cart abandonment rate, or how their shipping options may

ORC Blitz:
Georgia Retailers Partner with Law
Enforcement in Two-Day ORC Operation
47 Incidents -
29 Arrests - $6,236 Recovered
Last week, 18 retailers partnered with the Douglasville Police
Department to conduct an intense two-day operation combating organized
retail crime within that city. This was accomplished by concentrating
law enforcement and loss prevention professionals within specific retail
corridors with the aim of stopping and deterring retail crime.
In addition to the personnel involved in conducting the blitz, we were
also joined by Tommy Ratchford and Javier Pico, two attorneys in
Governor Brian Kemp's Office of Executive Counsel. They were there to
observe and learned first hand from loss prevention professionals the
struggles that our members face from the retail criminals themselves
(including getting to observe a shoplifting apprehension in real time),
the depth and complexity of ORC in the real world and how we partner
with law enforcement and prosecutors to fight it, as well as the
difficulties our members sometimes face in prosecuting these cases in
Georgia.

Prevention Council for submitting this article.
Tigard, OR: Lowe’s, Home Depot and Tigard Police
take down major ID theft suspect
A man from Texas was arrested after using counterfeit checks and identification
at local home improvement stores. At around 7 p.m. Tuesday, officers were
alerted that a wanted suspect from Texas was conducting fraudulent transactions
at the Lowes. Officers arrived to Lowes and learned the suspect had left the
area in a black pickup. Officer headed to the Home Depot on the hunch that the
suspect may be conducting other transactions at another home improvement store.
While checking the parking lot, the officer spotted a black pickup with
Washington license plates. Police said the officer became suspicious after
information shared with police indicted that a Lowes in Longview, Washington
reported fraudulent transactions the day prior. The officer then saw a man
matching the description of the wanted suspect enter the pickup and leave. The
officer conducted a traffic stop and took the suspect, identified as 47-year-old
Christopher Colwell, of Easton, Texas, into custody without incident. Police
said officers located "scores" of counterfeit identification and drivers
licenses, along with over $4,000 in cash, fraudulent checks, store receipts and
stolen merchandise.

Everyday you've got to work and you've got to ask yourself what value are you
adding to the company, to the industry and to your career. While this may seem
rather ominous at first, try reducing it to your daily tasks and just make sure
that with every effort you make there is value you deliver to someone, to some
store or to some project. If you can merely focus on the word "value" and ask
yourself am I delivering it everyday, you're then one step closer to advancing
your career. Because if you can build the field they will come and play.
Just a Thought, Gus
