Hurricane Florence Prompts State of Emergency - The Retail Impact
Hurricane preparation pushes retailers
Water running low; stores fear outages
Stores
around Fayetteville on Monday worked to replenish their shelves with
water and other emergency supplies that were scooped up over the weekend
as residents prepared for Hurricane Florence. Some customers at Target
and Harris Teeter were able to grab water that went quickly.
Carlie C's IGA off Bragg Boulevard had about five pallets of bottled
water that were all gone before noon Monday, store manager Jason
Buechner said. Other stores may be making similar requests, however,
which could affect what is delivered to his business.
The warehouse cut his milk order in half, and after a full stack of
bread trays is expected to arrive Tuesday the next order is Thursday and
Friday. Still, the store has extra canned meat, peanut butter and
batteries.
"If we start losing power and stuff like that here at the store, loss
of product due to spoilage could be a big issue," Buecher said. "I
hope that doesn't happen."

How Retailers in the Carolinas Are Preparing for Dangerous Hurricane
Florence;
Some Store Owners Scramble, Others Stay Put as Evacuation Orders Take
Effect
Retailers
along the Carolina coast are bracing for impact as Hurricane Florence
approaches the Eastern Seaboard. More than one million
residents in eight counties along South Carolina's coast were ordered to
evacuate on Monday, and store owners were scrambling to batten down
the hatches before the mandate goes into effect on Tuesday at noon.
At Sound Feet Shoes in Greenville, North Carolina, manager Ashley
Spruill said "sales have definitely decreased today" as local residents
focus on stocking up on food, water and other essentials. She said upper
management of the footwear chain, which operates nine stores throughout
the state, had given the OK to reduce the number of staff coming in
beginning on Tuesday for safety reasons, and one of the owners was
gathering sandbags and plywood to protect the building.
Further south, Allen Murphy, the owner of Coastal Kicks in Wilmington,
North Carolina, said he's planning on staying put this week, just
as he did two years ago during Hurricane Matthew.

Start Hurricane Preparations Now
Employers should get ready for Hurricane Florence's arrival
Now is the time for employers in the path of the storm to start
preparations and work with employees to make sure everyone stays safe.
The storm could cause an estimated $15.32 billion in damage. Residents
in its path are being warned to gather supplies or evacuate, the Weather
Channel reported.
Some businesses must have an Emergency Action Plan and evacuation
strategy to make sure workers can get to safety in case a hurricane
strikes the area. Employers should know the warning terms used for
hurricanes, as well as their local community's emergency plans, warning
signals, and shelters.

Hurricane
Florence, already a monster, is due to strengthen as 1 million people
are told to flee East Coast
Hurricane Florence has potential to cause "massive damage" to parts of
the southeastern and mid-Atlantic United States -- and not just in the
coastal areas where the storm aims to make landfall Thursday night,
officials warned. More than 1 million people face mandatory evacuation
orders Tuesday in coastal areas of Virginia, North Carolina and South
Carolina, as one of the strongest hurricanes to churn toward the eastern
seaboard in decades -- a Category 4 storm that may approach Category
5 strength -- nears shore.

California: Continuing to Chip Away at Crime Penalties
The
recently completed California legislative session continued a years long
effort to lower criminal sentences, ease restrictions on suspects, and
keep juveniles out of adult prisons despite objections that the moves
could harm public safety.
From a nation-leading reform measure that eliminates cash bail to
restrictions on trying juveniles, a major goal of Democratic lawmakers
this year was to limit mass incarceration that supporters say often
disproportionately affects women, youth and minorities.
"All these bills are coming to you because it's time for us to rectify a
system that's been proven to not work, to not rehabilitate adults, and
that's been completely discriminatory" to minorities, said Sen. Ricardo
Lara, a Los Angeles-area Democrat. Lara successfully argued for a bill
prohibiting 14- and 15-year-olds from being sent to adult prisons even
for crimes like murder, arson and robbery.
The California District Attorneys Association is urging Brown to veto
the bill. It could set dangerous killers free at 25 with little
opportunity to keep even the most threatening locked up, the group
argues.
Prosecuting people younger than 16 in adult court should be rare,
Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert said, but
judges should have that discretion in the most serious cases.
Schubert and other DAs came to Sacramento last week to urge Brown to
reject the bill and to highlight the case of Daniel Marsh, who was 15 in
2013 when he murdered and mutilated an elderly couple in Davis.

Crew-style thefts plague Roseville, Calif. Apple store and other tech
stores
Eight incidents so far in 2018; Tens of thousands in merchandise
Roseville police say a trend of "crew"-style thefts has been on the rise
in recent months, with tens of thousands of dollars in electronics being
stolen from the city's Apple store and a number of other cellphone
stores.
The Roseville Police Department said in a statement Monday evening that
the city has had eight reported instances of crew-style thefts from
cellphone/tech stores so far in 2018. Four of the eight have taken
place at the Apple store inside Westfield Galleria, which had
merchandise taken both Sunday and Monday, according to a news release
from the police department.
These and other recent Roseville cellphone store thefts do not appear to
have been armed robberies, the Roseville Police Department said in
Monday's news release. Roseville police are working with mall
management to attempt to ward off future thefts and attempts at
Westfield Galleria, according to the news release.

Black sorority files lawsuit against Bahama Breeze for racial
discrimination
White managers called police after falsely accusing them of being
'unruly'
Members
of a black sorority filed a lawsuit Monday against Bahama Breeze
Holdings, Inc. in response to an incident in June when two managers
called the Orange Village police and reported guests from a black
sorority at a private party were "unruly guests," the lawsuit says.
The lawsuit states that from the moment the party arrived, the staff
treated the party with hostility. The two white managers at the
store called police and falsely reported that the group were "unruly
guests" who were "threatening to walk out without paying," the
lawsuit says. The sorority group alleges that the white managers' false
reports to police were motivated by not what the party was doing, but
the stereotypes the managers had about black criminality.
Officers left the restaurant 30 to 45 minutes later but remained
conspicuously parked by the entrance as the group left the restaurant,
the lawsuit says. Before police arrived, the party was accosted and
forced to prove they had paid before being permitted to leave the
private party area, the lawsuit alleges.

Amazon's checkout-free Go store is heading to New York
But competition for checkout-free stores is heating up
Amazon is getting ready to open an Amazon Go store in New York,
The Information reports. Job listings for a new Amazon Go
location popped up Thursday night and the company confirmed to The
Information that it has plans for a store in the New York area. Amazon
already
has three of its
cashierless stores up and running in Seattle -- the third opened
earlier this week -- and it has plans to expand to
Chicago and San Francisco as well. But Amazon is no longer the only
player in the game.
Standard Cognition opened its first location today in San Francisco
and like Amazon Go, it lets customers shop and pay without having to go
through a checkout line or scan their items. Microsoft reportedly has
its own checkout-less shopping technology in the works as well,
something that Walmart is said to have its eyes on.

How a Brooks Brothers salesman inadvertently saved a man's life on 9/11
Antonio
DeJesus, a salesman at Brooks Brothers, inadvertently saved another
man's life because it took him too long to sell him a tie. On the
morning of 9/11, DeJesus remembers a man rushing in just moments after
the store's doors opened. He said he didn't like his tie and needed to
find a different one before heading to a job interview at Cantor
Fitzgerald, the financial firm at the top of the World Trade Center's
North Tower.
Exactly one year after the attacks, the store reopened at One Liberty
Plaza across from Ground Zero. Not long after it reopened, a man walked
into the store. It was the man who was interviewing at Cantor
Fitzgerald, which ended up being one of the worst-hit companies on 9/11.
Nearly two-thirds of its workforce died that day. But the man had never
made it to his interview because he was delayed in Brooks Brothers
looking for a tie.

The Equifax Breach One Year Later: 6 Action Items for Security Pros
The Equifax breach last September was the largest consumer breach in
history. We talked to experts about lessons learned and steps companies
can take to prevent and minimize future breaches.
1. Pay attention to patching and configuration management
Most analysts agree that the Equifax breach could have been prevented or
minimized if the company had instituted a solid patching system that
would have identified a vulnerability in an Apache Struts application.
2. Deploy encryption and tokenization
Julie Conroy, research director for Aite Group's Retail Banking
practice, says companies must assume they will get hacked, so working to
devalue the data makes the most sense.
3. Think differently about data management
George Avetisov, CEO of HYPR, says companies have to change their
mindset about data management.
4. Monitor the company's data by making frequent risk assessments
It's one thing to start managing data more efficiently, but many
companies fall short because they don't have a benchmark for what's
normal.
5. Find out who has access to which data - and for what reasons
Companies have to become really clear on who will have access to
sensitive data and for what reasons.
6. Develop a public relations program
Companies really need to step it up when it comes to dealing with the
public following a breach.

GAO Says Equifax Missed Flaws, Intrusion in Massive Breach
The 2017 Equifax breach involved at least 9,000 queries to 51
databases over a period of 76 days, according to a report on the
attack issued by the Government Accountability Office (GAO). The report
details the mechanisms used by the attackers to gain access and
exfiltrate personal information of approximately 145 million individuals
in the US, Canada, and the UK.
According to the report, there were a number of different issues at
Equifax, each contributing to the possibility and severity of the
breach. The security issues ranged from bad network architecture to a
failure to establish limits on the number of database queries possible
from a single address.
The report notes that Equifax has publicly reported that it has
remediated all the issues associated with the breach. The company has
not detailed those remediation steps, and the GAO has not independently
verified or assessed the remediation.

Adidas Data Security 'Failure' Led To June Hack, Suit Says
Company accused of negligence, breach of contract and more
Adidas has been hit with a proposed class action over a June data breach
that saw hackers make off with the private information of millions of
customers, with the lead plaintiff claiming they now face "severe"
ramifications due to the data security "failures" that led to the breach
Lead plaintiff Christian Duke said Adidas had failed to encrypt its
customers' private information, failed to employ so-called
multifactor authentication and failed to employ "behavior monitoring
technology" that could have helped to "promptly detect unusual activity and
transfer of data."
"The ramifications of Adidas' failure to protect the personal
information of its members are severe," Duke said. "Identity thieves can
use the information taken in the breach to perpetrate a variety of
crimes that harm victims," including government fraud like obtaining a
driver's license in the victim's name or personal fraud like taking out
a mortgage or insurance policy using the stolen information, among many
other potential schemes.
"As a result, plaintiff and members of the class now face an immediate
risk of identity theft and other problems associated with the disclosure
of personal information and will need to monitor their credit for an
indefinite duration," Duke added.
He is suing for negligence, breach of contract and violation of
California's Customer Records Act, among other things, and is
seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages as well as an
injunction that would require Adidas "to implement and maintain
reasonable and effective security practices" going forward.

Apple Pay, Google Pay support arrives at 7-Eleven stores
You can now use Apple Pay and Google Pay to satisfy your Slurpee
craving. The mobile payment systems, which typically run through your
phone or smartwatch, have begun being accepted at 7-Eleven stores across
the US, the convenience store giant announced Monday. Support for the
contactless payments systems is rolling out gradually through September,
joining the Samsung Pay mobile payments option, 7-Eleven said in a
statement.
7-Eleven marks the latest retailer to embrace the rival mobile payments
platforms to pay for goods and services, which the tech giants see as a
critical step to getting more people entrenched in their respective
ecosystems of devices, apps and other services, making it tougher to
switch to a competitor.

The Sun Never Sets on the Amazon Empire
Amazon dominates international marketplace reach
Amazon's presence now spans 58 countries and reaches the greatest international
online population, 1.2 billion people,
according to Website Builder Expert (WBE), which used data from Amazon's
Alexa Internet.
Alibaba is a close second in population reached, at around 1.1 billion people,
but only operates in 15 countries. EBay landed fifth on the list of the top
e-commerce marketplaces, reaching 132.1 million in 13 countries.
Amazon is the leading e-commerce player in North America, Western Europe and
India, but Alibaba and its many online entities - such as Taobao in China,
Lazada in Southeast Asia and Tokopedia in Indonesia - rule Asia, WBE reported.
Africa and India appear to be the two biggest e-commerce battlegrounds in the
future.

Calvin Klein seeks to crack down on e-commerce
counterfeiters
American fashion brand Calvin Klein has filed a lawsuit against online
counterfeiters who have allegedly been selling infringing underwear, handbags,
and sunglasses.
The fashion brand explained that it filed the suit to combat online
counterfeiters who seek to trade on its reputation and goodwill. Calvin Klein
added that it is "forced" to take legal action to protect unknowing consumers
from purchasing counterfeit products.
Calvin Klein claimed that the defendants create internet stores "by the
hundreds". They appear to be selling genuine Calvin Klein products, while
instead selling counterfeit goods to unknowing customers, the complaint said.
The fashion brand asked the court to restrain the defendants from imitating its
trademarks and passing off non-genuine products as authentic.
Calvin Klein also requested a transfer of the domain names linked with the
defendants, as well as triple damages and all profits gained by the
counterfeiters as a result of the infringing activities.

Great Leaders are Great
Followers, Practice Patience, Strive to Be Nice
|
What's the 1 True Source of Good Leadership?
Research Finally Confirms Where it Comes From
We've commonly held on to the belief that good leaders are confident and
powerful. But now, with new research, that thinking is going to be blown away.
Instead, to be a great leader, you need to be an equally great follower.
Strong work ethic
Why Being Nice Makes You a Better Leader
For far too long, being nice has been mistaken for being weak, but that couldn't
be farther from the truth. Niceness is a critical quality of being a great
leader, so here's how any leader can be nicer and stronger in five ways and get
better results.

How Do You Know Someone is a Top-Notch Leader?
Look for These 4 Signs
If you want to improve your own leadership skills, just remember that it's a
journey. Make sure you enjoy the ride. To become a top-notch leader, you need to
remember these four lessons. They will help you become a better leader for
yourself and your team.
Patience is a virtue
Become a Great Leader By Working With Great
Leaders
What better way to become a great leader yourself, than by learning from the
best? We all have experienced bad leaders who think they have all the answers,
but great leaders don't see themselves as separate from their team.
Roll up your sleeves |

Your self-evaluation is probably the most important document
you'll write all year and it requires a degree of self-reflection and openness
that, if done correctly, thoroughly, realistically and written well, will in
actuality garner more respect than virtually anything else you can do. However,
it's also a double-edged sword that mandates your adherence and constant effort
to reach your written objectives and goals. The problem is that while most are
rather open about their areas of improvement, very few actually quantify what
they are going to do to improve and set specific goals that are realistically
obtainable. The first step may be in just approaching and completing the reviews
of your direct reports first and doing them with the same intensity and focus as
you do yours. This step gets you in the game so to speak and allows you to tie
yours into your team's and also may just give you some feedback you need to
hear.
Just a Thought, Gus
