A Layered Approach to Securing Retail Entrances Against Theft

Retailers across the nation are feeling the strain and profit loss attributed to a rise in external theft hitting their stores. Taking an active role in layering technology and updating policies and procedures can help retailers stem the flow of activity and risk.

Shoplifting has been around as long as shopping itself. What changes over the years is the methods deployed by the thieves and the magnitude of the issue for retailers’ bottom lines. As reported by a number of industry associations, security suppliers and retailers, the COVID-19 pandemic has played a significant role in increasing the frequency of more violent types of crimes.

While no one solution or even combination of solutions will completely eradicate shoplifting from our society, taking an active role in layering technology and updating policies and procedures can help retailers stem the flow of activity and risk. Active prevention methods such as signage, visible camera technologies and public view monitors, along with solutions designed to modify consumer behavior, can have an impact on deterring crime across the retail industry.

Shoplifting, organized retail crime and social media-driven theft impacts everyone—from the consumer to the retailer and the communities where they operate—so a coordinated effort between retailers, their security partners and law enforcement is an essential first step.

To learn how Everon's retail security professionals can help create a safe shopping environment and minimize shrink in your stores, discover our comprehensive security, fire, and life safety solutions below.

The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact

Retailers Applaud Florida's Aggressive War on ORC
Florida AG Launched Special Investigative Task Force to Combat ORC
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier launched a Retail Theft Investigative Special Task Force to aggressively combat organized retail theft in Florida.

“Instead of having toothpaste locked behind plexiglass like CA & NY, we are taking decisive action to combat organized retail theft,” said Attorney General James Uthmeier. “Shoppers suffer when retail thefts drive up prices. This partnership between law enforcement and the Florida Retail Federation will help keep prices down and put criminals behind bars.”

The Florida AG said the Retail Theft Investigative Special Task Force equips local law enforcement with statewide tools and resources, removes jurisdictional barriers, and allows investigators to close the cases they open with stronger charges. Collaboration allows for streamlined investigations and eliminates enforcement barriers.

The main goal of the task force will be to ensure swift action against organized retail theft rings and repeat offenders. “The Home Depot is proud to be part of this solution to this growing challenge for communities across the county,” said Michael Tribony, Store Manager, The Home Depot.

“The launch of this statewide task force reinforces that Florida stands tall as a law-and-order state,” said Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters. “This state and our leadership prioritize protecting law-abiding citizens and promoting a fertile business culture.

“The Florida Retail Federation is grateful for the bold leadership of Attorney General James Uthmeier and our law enforcement partners in combating organized retail theft,” said R. Scott Shalley, President/CEO, Florida Retail Federation. “The cross-agency collaboration made possible by this task force not only brings criminals to justice, but also protects Florida businesses, retail team members and consumers.” westorlandonews.com

What's Fueling Canada's Retail Crime Surge?
Sask. police crack down on shoplifting amid provincewide rise in retail crime

Police say desperation, addiction and organized crime are all factors driving the trend

Retail theft is on the rise across Saskatchewan and police say it’s getting more violent. They say shoplifting is also rising at grocery stores, pharmacies, hardware stores and other shops. They want to crack down on both violent robberies and simple thefts.

“We receive on average six reports of shoplifting or theft under $5,000 a day,” Regina police Insp. Sean Fenwick said.

People enter stores and leave with goods — sometimes small things, sometimes entire carts of products — without a word, police say. Many return for more. Some are acting alone and others are part of coordinated theft groups, investigators say.

“We'll see new Canadians, we'll see people struggling with addictions, we'll see professionals, we see youth, adults. It does vary, but there's certain trends that are interesting,” said Saskatoon police Sgt. Erica Weber, a restorative justice coordinator.

She said some of the rise in the retail crime numbers reflects better reporting from stores — like those that hire loss-prevention staff — but she believes thefts and violence have increased.

Weber meets with many of the people brought in during the blitzes. Behind each file is a different story: a parent who couldn’t afford groceries, a worker who recently lost housing, someone in early recovery who relapsed and stole to fund their addiction, she said. cbc.ca

Museum Debuts Retail Theft Exhibit
Retail Theft Steals the Spotlight at Alcatraz East Crime Museum
A new exhibit is joining Al Capone’s rosary, Ted Bundy’s dental molds and Charles Manson’s acoustic guitar at the Alcatraz East Crime Museum, which has debuted a temporary display focused on retail theft.

Located in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. and inspired by the famous island prison in San Francisco Bay, the museum will feature Sticky Fingers, Heavy Consequences: The True Cost of Retail Crime through March 2026. The exhibit will display some of the most commonly stolen retail items, along with information on the counterfeit industry and prevention tips.

Theft, or shrink as it’s often called in the industry, is a perpetual problem for retailers, but this may be the first time it’s getting the museum treatment. The exhibit calls out the fact that in recent years retail theft has become more sophisticated and widespread, highlighting not just shoplifting but issues like cargo theft and “Flash Robs,” when an organized group steals from a single retail store.

Though we may not think about it, retail theft impacts us all,” said Ally Pennington, Artifacts and Programs Manager at Alcatraz East Crime Museum in a statement. “It is not a victimless crime, and the more aware we are, the better we can learn ways to prevent it as both businesses and consumers.” retailtouchpoints.com

Preventing Credit Card Fraud at the Source
A relatively unknown public safety tool every time you swipe | Opinion
The good news is that banks, credit card companies and payment networks continue to improve and progress in early-prevention and enforcement methods of addressing credit card fraud. This is because credit card networks invest in modern fraud prevention systems which are an essential public safety tool to prevent victimization and aid local law enforcement.

Payment processing costs that average about 2% of every transaction help pay for these ongoing investments and upgrades. Every time you shop online or use a card for payment, the merchant pays a small fee to the bank for securely processing the payment. A portion of the electronic payment cost supports real-time fraud monitoring, a complex backend system that utilizes data, AI, technology and expertise to flag fraud within seconds of a suspicious transaction.

This helps stop identity theft and financial fraud at the front end, which reduces funds available for organized theft rings, online exploitation schemes, drug trafficking and other criminal enterprises. As a local captain, I can tell you that these costs are an investment in crime prevention. When credit card networks automatically detect and stop fraud and quickly reimburse victims, it significantly reduces the number of cases that land on our desks at the Sacramento County Sheriff’s office. It allows us to focus our resources on violent crime, property crime and emergency response. sacbee.com

Return Activity Up 16% During the Holidays
Returns are rising – here’s why

Consumers are returning purchases at growing rates, with a few key drivers.

Analysis of 10 million transactions from agentic post-purchase platform Seel indicates that returns in general are increasing on a year-over-year basis. During the November-December holiday shopping season, return activity increases 16%. (During the November-December holiday shopping season, return activity typically increases 16%.)

Looking at year-over-year data, the inaugural Seel 2025 Returns and Refunds Report indicates the main reasons for returns during the year were the result of quality and reconsideration, with defective item returns rising 14% and change of mind returns climbing 9% in 2025. Defective item returns were especially prevalent in the computers and electronics category, soaring 164% year over year.

In one bright spot, overall returns resulting from late deliveries dropped 10% from 2024. But delivery issues drove returns in the fashion and accessories category, including sharp increases in late deliveries (124% increase year over year) and missing packages (42% rise year over year).

In the consumer electronics category, Seel data indicates the biggest spike in returns came from product performance issues, where defective item returns climbed 33% year over year, while undelivered items rose 13% year over year. However, consumer electronics also saw a 45% drop in late deliveries. chainstoreage.com

From Caution to Acceleration on AI
CFOs Push AI Forward but Keep a Hand on the Wheel
Finance leaders still have their doubts about using artificial intelligence to make complex, predictive decisions. But in the future, they expect the rapidly evolving technology will reshape strategic and operational decision-making across the entire enterprise.

CFOs have high hopes for AI. As it stands, 100% of executives surveyed report using some advanced form of it for at least one finance task. But they’re taking a relatively cautious approach for now. While many are using the technology for monitoring and maintenance, they are far more hesitant to use it for high-judgment or cross-system jobs.

Finance chiefs are ready to automate a broader set of analytical tasks. They are eager to take on AI’s recommendations, but not to hand over complete control. Down the line, they see a future in which the tool can autonomously handle tasks such as regulatory compliance and capital structure optimization. They expect significant impact in areas where finance teams face the most manual work and system friction, particularly in budget reallocation and workflow coordination. However, they are less willing to hand over deeply contextual or externally facing decisions.

In short, CFOs are preparing for a shift from cautious automation to AI-driven strategic acceleration across the enterprise. pymnts.com

Retailers Brace for Record Traffic
Super Saturday expected to attract record crowds
Retailers should prepare for record traffic on “Super Saturday” as consumers rush to complete their holiday shopping.

An estimated 158.9 million consumers plan to shop on December 20, the last Saturday before Christmas, according to the annual survey released by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics. The figure is up from 157.2 million shoppers last year and surpasses the previous record of 158.5 million in 2022. (Black Friday and Super Saturday are generally regarded as the two busiest shopping days of the holiday season.)

Super Saturday shoppers are expected to embrace multiple channels this year, with nearly half, or 71.6 million (45%), planning to shop both in-store and online, up from 69.5 million (44%) in 2024. For those who plan to shop a single channel, 29% will do so exclusively in-store, while 26% will shop online only. chainstoreage.com

Businesses Continuity is Top Concern Following Cyberattacks
CISOs view hybrid environments as best way to manage risk, compliance

Security leaders are also focused on the convergence of IT and operational technology as business continuity becomes a major concern.

Hybrid infrastructure that includes a mix of public/private cloud environments, on-premises workloads and air-gapped systems are preferred by security leaders as a way to boost resilience and better manage risk, according to a report Thursday by Trellix.

About 96% of chief information security officers said a hybrid model is the preferred approach to meet regulatory and compliance requirements, while 97% said such a model will help meet obligations related to data sovereignty and residency.

According to the report, working under a hybrid environment should help insulate their organizations from the impact of a cyberattack or localized failure. A key goal is to maintain business continuity, and about nine of 10 CISOs currently cooperate in hybrid environments.

Another key issue for CISOs is the convergence of operational technology with information technology. About 96% of respondents to the survey said convergence of IT and OT is an essential part of protecting critical infrastructure from attack.

Despite that consensus, two of every five CISOs said their leadership lacks the understanding of how IT and OT security differ from one another.

Operational resilience and business continuity have emerged as major concerns in 2025, as major companies have faced catastrophic attacks that led to weeks and in some cases months of disruption.

British automaker Jaguar Land Rover suffered a late-summer cyberattack that disrupted vehicle production for more than a month into mid-October. That incident had a $2.5 billion impact on the British economy, which included massive disruption of the company’s international supply chain.  cybersecuritydive.com

#1 Business Risk?
Cybersecurity concerns are paramount among executives in almost all roles, regions and industries

A new survey finds widespread agreement that security is one of the biggest challenges facing companies today.

Corporate executives see cybersecurity as the top risk facing their businesses, according to a new survey. Cybersecurity is also executives’ top investment priority, the consulting firm Protiviti found in its annual executive perspectives report, published on Dec. 11.

Third-party risks, which are closely associated with cybersecurity threats, ranked second on executives’ list of concerns.

In addition to topping the overall list of risk factors, cybersecurity was also the top concern across organizations of all sizes, the top concern of executives in most roles and the top concern for organizations in almost every geographic region.

Corporate leaders are “increasingly aware that cyber resilience must be embedded into enterprise strategy,” Protiviti said in its report, which was based on a survey of 1,540 board members and C-suite executives. “Addressing evolving cybersecurity threats must be treated as a strategic imperative, with organizations needing to integrate cyber risk metrics into C-suite and boardroom performance dashboards.”

Board members, chief financial officers and chief operating officers all identified cyber threats as the top risks to their businesses, as did chief information officers, chief technology officers and chief information security officers. cybersecuritydive.com

What types of compliance should your password manager support?
Lost credentials and weak authentication controls still sit at the center of many security incidents. IT leaders and CISOs know this problem well. They also know that regulators watch how organizations protect passwords, track access, and document security decisions. That is why password managers have become part of compliance conversations rather than optional add ons.

Alex Muntyan, CEO at Passwork, describes it this way: “When teams store passwords in scattered places, they create blind spots. A password manager helps bring order to something that can get messy fast.”

This raises a practical question. What types of compliance should your password manager support, and how do you judge whether a tool meets those expectations. helpnetsecurity.com

How Will the Amazon-USPS Relationship Change?
Amazon mulling delivery change that could affect 6.3 billion parcels
Amazon is considering making a major delivery change that could affect as many as 6.3 billion parcels, although it's not certain, Amazon has said it still wants to work things out, and the decision could hinge on the results of contract negotiations. Still, the possibility is generating headlines because it would be a big deal.

The online company has become "a key player" in the U.S. parcel industry, and now, according to Reuters, the company is "in discussions with the U.S. Postal Service about the relationship" they share. Amazon confirmed that the company is "considering its options before the current contract expires next year." The Washington Post reported in December 2025 that Amazon is looking into "expanding its nationwide delivery network and giving up its long-standing partnership with the U.S. Postal Service."

That's the newspaper owned by Amazon's founder Jeff Bezos, so the report received even more attention. Simply put, Amazon could theoretically cut ties with the Postal Service and create its own "shipping network" instead,The Independent reported. And that would affect a lot of parcels.

How many parcels would this change, if implemented, affect? A lot of them. Of the 22.37 billion parcels shipped in the U.S. in 2024, Amazon was responsible for delivering 6.3 billion of them, with the USPS delivering 6.9 billion, according to Reuters, which added that Amazon may ship 8.4 billion parcels by 2028.

UPS and Amazon are "already scaling back their partnership," Reuters added. Amazon already surpasses FedEx and UPS in shipping totals, Reuters reported.

The Postal Service relies on Amazon financially, so losing the partnership would be a big hit. According to The Independent, Amazon provided the Postal Service with $6 billion in 2025, or 7.5 percent of its annual revenue. The partnership expires in October 2026, the site reported. msn.com
