The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact

Organized iPhone Thefts Reshaping Retail Landscape
Stolen iPhones fuel global resale pipeline, say retailers

A surge in mobile phone theft, driven largely by organized criminal groups targeting iPhones, is reshaping the global retail landscape.

Rising mobile phone theft is reshaping retail economics and store operations, with stolen iPhones moving quickly through international resale routes despite tougher on-device security.

UK retailers estimate shoplifting losses at a record £2.2bn in 2023/24, while police say London alone recorded roughly 80,000 stolen phones last year—pressure that translates into higher costs, new security routines and strained staff morale.

Rising costs and store responses

For retailers, mobile phone theft sits within broader “retail shrink”. US data show shoplifting incidents and dollar losses have climbed markedly since 2019, echoing trends reported by British chains.

The Co-op Group, for example, booked £80m in retail crime losses in 2024—over half its adjusted operating profit—underscoring how theft pressures pricing and investment decisions.

Stores are reacting with higher-touch controls on high-value products: locked cases, staffed access to phone displays, and tighter entry management at peak times.

Yet these measures carry trade-offs. Consumer surveys show that a notable share of shoppers walk away or switch retailers when faced with locked merchandise, and analysts warn that over-securing can depress sales or push customers online.

Front-line conditions are also changing. Industry surveys describe increased threats and abuse towards staff as they manage theft-prone categories, and UK retailers collectively report more than 20 million theft incidents a year.

These trends contribute to stress, absences and turnover, adding hidden costs beyond the lost stock. retail-insight-network.com

The UK's 'Safer Business Action Week'

Law Enforcement Worldwide Battling Retail Crime
UK: GMP supporting retail crime blitz as part of Safer Business Action Week
GMP is supporting this year’s Safer Business Action Week, which will see a targeted focus on tackling retail crime and shoplifters across our districts.

Organised by the National Business Crime Centre (NBCC), the targeted initiatives saw more than 750 arrests made across the country last year, seeing neighbourhood teams, local partnerships, and store security working together to tackle prolific offenders and share best practice.

Within Greater Manchester, officers will be focusing on hotspot areas, including retail parks, shopping precincts, and town centres. Teams will be proactively working to arrest offenders, provide crime prevention advice, and provide reassurance for workers and shoppers alike.

Retail crime remains a focus for GMP, with teams taking part in multiple days of action throughout the year, and constantly reviewing the best ways in which to tackle shoplifting and business-related offences.

Throughout this week, multiple tactics will be deployed to tackle retail crime, including high-visibility patrolling, visits to stores, and the use of Live Facial Recognition technology.

The LFR deployment is a new tool that we are utilising to locate those wanted for offences and who are on a pre-set watchlist – with any images taken deleted within seconds. gmp.police.uk

UK: Working together to tackle retail and business crime
We’re supporting the National Business Crime Centre’s Safer Business Action (SaBA) Week, which starts today and runs until Sunday 16 November. This national initiative brings together police forces, local authorities, and business partners to tackle retail crime and anti-social behaviour affecting businesses and frontline workers.

Throughout the week, officers will be visiting local businesses, retailers, and hospitality venues across Derbyshire to raise awareness of business-related crime and share practical prevention advice. This includes guidance on shop security, deterring theft, and protecting staff from abuse or violence.

Business crime can take many forms, including shop theft, non-payment in restaurants, staff theft, burglary, and aggressive behaviour towards workers. Many incidents go unreported, and we’re encouraging businesses to report crimes to help us build a safer and more supportive environment.

While SaBA Week highlights this important issue, our commitment to tackling business and retail crime continues all year round. Our officers work closely with local businesses throughout the year to provide support, share prevention advice, and respond to incidents that affect staff, customers and the wider community. derbyshire.police.uk

From the Battlefield to the Sales Floor:
Why Veterans Excel in Retail Loss Prevention

By the D&D Daily staff

As retailers continue to face mounting challenges from organized retail crime, workplace violence, and evolving cyber-physical threats, many are looking to an experienced and proven talent pool for leadership — America’s veterans and former military personnel.

Those who have served in the armed forces often transition naturally into the fields of loss prevention, asset protection, and security management. The reasons go well beyond discipline and structure. Veterans bring a mission-driven mindset, an understanding of situational awareness, and an ability to lead under pressure — all qualities essential to protecting people, property, and profits in today’s retail environment.

In the military, success depends on assessing risks, executing plans with precision, and maintaining team cohesion in fast-changing situations. In retail LP, those same principles apply. Whether it’s managing a high-stakes investigation, leading a store response to a robbery, or deploying technology to prevent theft, veterans are trained to analyze threats, adapt quickly, and operate calmly under stress.

Leadership and communication are other key strengths. Former military leaders are accustomed to motivating diverse teams, working collaboratively across departments, and holding themselves and others accountable — attributes that translate directly to running successful LP programs and building partnerships with operations, HR, and law enforcement.

Retailers also benefit from veterans’ familiarity with technology and protocols. Many bring experience in surveillance, intelligence gathering, and logistics — all increasingly critical as LP teams integrate AI, video analytics, and data-driven solutions into their operations.

Beyond skill sets, hiring veterans supports a broader culture of service and loyalty. These individuals have already demonstrated integrity, resilience, and commitment to mission — traits that foster trust across the organization.

With the retail industry prioritizing both safety and leadership continuity, veterans continue to stand out as an invaluable resource. By recruiting and promoting them into LP and security leadership roles, retailers aren’t just filling positions — they’re strengthening the backbone of their protection strategy with proven, battle-tested leaders.

Record-Breaking Holiday Sales Coming?
Holiday sales to top $1 trillion for the first time: NRF

Consumers are expected to spend an average of $890 each, marking the second-highest amount in the survey’s 23-year history.

Retail sales during November and December are expected to reach $1 trillion for the first time, according to the National Retail Federation.

That translates to growth of between 3.7% and 4.2% year over year during the two-month period. That compares to a 4.3% increase in 2024, when holiday sales reached $976 billion.

Consumers will spend an average of $890.49 each over the holiday, constituting the second-highest amount in the 23-year history of the survey. The NRF’s calculations exclude automobile dealers, gasoline stations and restaurants.

American consumers may be cautious in sentiment, yet remain fundamentally strong and continue to drive U.S. economic activity,” Matthew Shay, NRF president and CEO, said in a statement. “We remain bullish about the holiday shopping season and expect that consumers will continue to seek savings in nonessential categories to be able to spend on gifts for loved ones.”   retaildive.com

As AI Explodes, Nordstrom Leans Into Human Connections
In an AI world, Nordstrom is leaning into human care

AI has a role to play, but when customers “really want the face-to-face, eye-to-eye, voice-to-voice connection,” the retailer is there to meet the need, Nordstrom’s Heather Bissell said.

Nordstrom’s overall sales continue to grow, and Heather Bissell thinks she knows the driver: customer experience.  The senior director of customer care at Nordstrom says what sets the retailer apart is human care. That doesn’t mean that Nordstrom isn’t investing in AI or technology, but it’s keeping humans in the forefront, Bissell said.

“The biggest thing for us is really about the human connection,” Bissell told sister publication CX Dive at the Reuters Customer Service and Experience East conference Tuesday in New York City.

AI can handle an aspect of personalized care, she said. “But when you really want the face-to-face, eye-to-eye, voice-to-voice connection, at Nordstrom, that is what we do really well, whether it is in the store, on the phone, chat, email, social media. Just across the board, it’s about really making people feel special and validated.” retaildive.com

'Tis the Season for More Cyberattacks
Retailers Urged to Brace for Cyberattack Surge During the Holiday Season

By the D&D Daily staff

As retailers gear up for the busiest shopping period of the year, cybersecurity experts are warning of a parallel surge—one that plays out behind the screens. The holiday season consistently sees a spike in phishing, ransomware, credential-stuffing, and point-of-sale (POS) attacks targeting retailers large and small.

The reasons are simple: higher online traffic, seasonal hiring, and the rush to meet demand create ideal conditions for cybercriminals. According to multiple industry reports, retail remains one of the top five most-targeted sectors for cyberattacks, with incidents increasing by as much as 30% between November and January in recent years. Threat actors know that retailers are often stretched thin, with IT and Loss Prevention teams focused on physical security and store operations.

Experts advise retailers to take immediate steps to shore up their defenses before peak season. That includes reviewing access permissions for seasonal employees, enforcing multi-factor authentication, and ensuring that all POS terminals, self-checkout systems, and connected devices are updated with the latest security patches. Network segmentation—isolating POS systems from customer Wi-Fi and other business networks—remains a simple but often overlooked safeguard.

Phishing remains the leading entry point for many retail breaches, and cybercriminals increasingly use convincing order confirmations or shipping-delay messages to trick employees into clicking malicious links. Security awareness training can be especially effective if conducted now, before temporary staff join the front lines.

Retailers are also encouraged to test their incident response plans—verifying who must be contacted in the event of an intrusion and ensuring backups are secure and recoverable. Coordination between Loss Prevention, IT, and store operations is crucial; the faster an organization can detect and isolate suspicious activity, the less damage it will sustain.

With consumer trust and brand reputation on the line, a single breach can quickly overshadow a successful holiday quarter. As one cybersecurity analyst put it, “Retailers can’t afford to treat cybersecurity as an afterthought during the holidays—it has to be part of the playbook.”

Mandatory Employee Phishing Training Helps
What keeps phishing training from fading over time
When employees stop falling for phishing emails, it is rarely luck. A new study shows that steady, mandatory phishing training can cut risky behavior over time. After one year of continuous simulations and follow-up lessons, employees were half as likely to take the bait.

The research, carried out by teams from various universities, offers a look at how behavior changes when training never stops.

Why long-term training matters

Phishing still kicks off most cyberattacks, and awareness training is standard practice. Still, many companies wonder if it actually works. The study followed more than 1,300 employees across 20 companies over a 12-month period to find out what works when phishing simulations are repeated regularly and backed by mandatory training.

Each employee received a series of simulated phishing emails during the year. When someone took an unsafe action, such as clicking a malicious link, the system assigned a short mandatory training session before the person could return to work. More than 13,000 phishing emails were sent in total, each one designed to test different psychological cues such as urgency, curiosity, or helpfulness.

By the end of the experiment, employees were making far fewer mistakes. Unsafe clicks and submissions dropped by roughly half within six months and then stabilized near the industry average for organizations that use ongoing training. The findings suggest that repetition and timing matter more than the format of the lessons themselves. helpnetsecurity.com

Do Businesses Have the Infrastructure to Support AI Surge?
AI agents worsen IT’s capacity crunch: S&P Global

An infrastructure overhaul to support agentic systems is underway, bringing with it a new set of capacity demands and security considerations.

Enterprise demand for AI agents is driving significant changes in infrastructure needs, according to an S&P Global report published Wednesday.

“Agentic systems consume significantly more IT capacity than chat-based systems as they break free of human pacing and launch multiple prompts and cascade into other agents,” S&P Global said in a release accompanying the report.

GPU shipment projections from leading suppliers have increased more than 500% for the 2025-2026 period compared with initial estimates released in 2023. The rapid investment growth comes as most organizations aim to deploy agentic tools.

As more enterprises actively pursue agentic AI adoption, the infrastructure considerations needed to support the technology are coming into clearer view.  cybersecuritydive.com

The Holiday of AI Shopping?
AI shopping tools are evolving, but are they ready for the holidays?

Most consumers are open to generative AI-powered guidance, but only 3% say they will start their shopping journey with a ChatGPT-type search, according to Coveo research.

Many consumers are interested in AI shopping tools ahead of the holiday season, with about 7 in 10 saying they are open to using generative AI guidance, according to a survey released last week by Coveo. More than one-third say they have already used it.

Respondents’ top use cases for generative AI tools are comparing products, getting budget-based recommendations, and learning more about what they’re buying, according to the survey of 6,000 people across the the U.S., the U.K., Australia and New Zealand.

When customers start shopping for a product or gift, nearly one-third start with a search engine and nearly one-quarter look to Amazon or another marketplace, according to the Coveo study. In comparison, only 3% start with an AI assistant-powered search like ChatGPT.

While consumers express curiosity about generative AI shopping tools, traditional product discovery methods are still the norm.

People are still turning to human-curated sources for recommendations, particularly when it comes to choosing gifts, according to Terra Higginson, a principal research director at Info-Tech Research Group. customerexperiencedive.com

Early Holiday Shopping Boosts October Online Sales
Adobe: Holidays helped drive almost $89B in October online spending
Online consumers in the U.S. got an early start to the holidays in October to the tune of $88.7 billion.

Adobe is sharing new Adobe Analytics e-commerce data for October 2025 indicating U.S. consumers spent $88.7 billion online in the month of October 2025, up 8.2% year-over-year. Mobile drove the majority of online spend with a 51.4% share ($45.6 billion, up 11.6% year-over-year) compared to desktop shopping.

In addition, "buy now, pay later" installment spending drove $7.1 billion in spend (up 7.6% year-over-year). The data also reveals three e-commerce elements that helped prompt some U.S. consumers to begin their digital holiday shopping before Halloween. They were Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days fall online sales extravaganza, increasing use of generative AI as a shopping tool, and growing consumer reliance on social media and influencers for product discovery and education. chainstoreage.com

Titles Don’t Make Leaders — People Do

If you need to remind everyone that you’re “in charge,” odds are… you aren’t. True leadership shows up quietly. It’s in the way your team talks about you when you’re not around, how people step up because they want to — not because they fear the consequences. The strongest leaders influence through trust, clarity, and example, not volume. If your badge does more talking than your behaviors, you’re just renting authority, not earning it.
