Retail Security's Consistency Problem
Retail Security's Biggest Weakness May Be Inconsistency

By the D&D Daily staff

For large retailers operating hundreds or thousands of locations, maintaining consistent security standards can be one of the most difficult challenges facing loss prevention and asset protection teams. While corporate policies may establish clear expectations, their effectiveness often depends on how consistently they are implemented at the store level.

Differences in staffing, management experience, employee training and daily operating conditions can create significant variations in how security procedures are followed. A policy that works effectively at one location may be overlooked or applied differently at another, potentially exposing retailers to preventable losses and safety risks.

This challenge becomes particularly important for retailers with geographically dispersed operations. Regional differences, high employee turnover and competing operational priorities can make it difficult for corporate LP/AP teams to maintain uniform standards across their networks.

Even routine security responsibilities, such as merchandise receiving, access control, incident reporting and opening or closing procedures, can become vulnerabilities when execution varies between locations.

For asset protection leaders, identifying these inconsistencies requires more than periodic audits or compliance reviews. Regular communication with store management, ongoing training and clear accountability measures can help ensure that security expectations remain part of everyday operations rather than occasional corporate initiatives.

Technology can also provide greater visibility into how procedures are being followed across locations. Centralized reporting platforms, digital checklists and automated alerts can help identify recurring problems, although these systems still depend on accurate information and consistent employee participation.

Importantly, maintaining consistency does not necessarily mean applying identical solutions everywhere. Stores face different risks based on their location, size, merchandise mix and customer traffic. Effective security programs must balance companywide standards with the flexibility to address individual store conditions.

As retailers continue to evaluate their security investments, the effectiveness of existing policies may deserve as much attention as new technology or additional protective measures.

For LP/AP departments, strengthening execution across the store network could represent one of the most practical opportunities to reduce preventable losses, improve employee safety and build more reliable security operations.

Violent Crime Drops 25% Nationwide
Violent crimes have single largest annual drop ever recorded during first year of Trump’s second term: DOJ report
Violent crimes dropped by at least 25% across most categories in 2025, the first year of President Trump’s second term, according to a new Department of Justice report.

Preliminary estimates in the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) released Monday found the majority of non-fatal violent crimes — including rapes, sexual assaults and robberies — dropped by one-quarter from 2024.

Last year also saw a 31% reduction in aggravated assaults, a drop of 390,000 in raw numbers; a 25% reduction in burglary or trespassing, 460,000 fewer; and a 30% decrease in motor vehicle thefts, amounting to 349,000 fewer vehicles stolen.

All other types of household thefts fell by 19%. The declines were the largest single-year reduction in the history of the NCVS, which is compiled by the DOJ’s Bureau of Justice Statistics and began in 1973.

The declines are steeper than those reported by the FBI this past May, which recorded aggravated assault dropping by more than 7% and violent crime declined by about 9.3%.

Officials have credited the reductions to Trump’s push to end cashless bail policies, deploy the National Guard to Washington, DC, and other major cities, and close the southern border to illegal immigration. nypost.com

Bringing Police Into Shopping Centers
Lee's Summit police opening satellite office in shopping center to address retail crime
Lee's Summit city leaders and police are partnering with a local shopping center to tackle organized retail crime. The Lee's Summit Police Department will open a satellite office at Summit Fair Lifestyle Center, located at the intersection of Interstate 470 and U.S. Highway 50 near Chipman Road.

Addressing retail crime has become a priority for the Lee's Summit City Council. That's why city leaders approved the partnership to bring the 500-square-foot substation to the popular shopping destination.

The substation is set to open during the first week of November, Block & Company Inc. Realtors announced. Through the partnership with Summit Fair property ownership, the city will not have to pay for the rental cost.

The goal of the office is to reduce police travel time in the event of crimes, establish a consistent police presence and strengthen relationships with local businesses. Major retailers in the shopping center include Dick's Sporting Goods, H&M, Lululemon, Sephora, Victoria's Secret, Made in KC Marketplace, DSW and more. kmbc.com

Cities Invest in Crime-Fighting Drones, Other Tech
Peoria to consider spending millions for drones, other crime-fighting technology
A proposed five-year, nearly $13.8 million contract between Peoria and a crime-fighting technology firm includes launching a Drone as First Responder program.

The Peoria City Council Tuesday night will consider whether to continue working with Arizona-based Axon, which over the past several years has sold the city tasers, body-worn and in-squad car cameras, data storage software, and other technology.

Included in the new deal are about two dozen drones and a network of automated drone docks around the city, according to a council memo.

“This will provide faster emergency response times and improved officer safety” and provide live real-time information to responding officers before they arrive at a scene, the council memo said. 25newsnow.com

AI Doomsday Predictions
An AI safety leader says he stopped saving for retirement because he believes AI will kill us all in the next 10 years

Nate Soares said he stopped adding to his 401(k) because AI may kill us within a decade.

Saving for retirement is a bet on the future. Nate Soares, the president of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute, isn't so sure AI will let us get that far.

"I do not save for retirement right now. I have a 401(k) from when I worked at Google, but I haven't contributed for a decade," Soares told The Atlantic CEO Nicholas Thompson in a recent interview for Thompson's "The Most Interesting Thing in AI" series.

Soares' decision reflects a grim view of the AI race.

"Godfather of AI" Geoffrey Hinton and Anthropic researcher Evan Hubinger have, respectively, put the odds of AI killing everyone within a decade at 10% and more than 10%. Soares is more pessimistic: He told Thompson he believes there is a greater-than-50% chance AI causes human extinction in less than a decade.

Soares said that a sufficiently capable AI could develop goals at odds with humanity's, evade oversight, improve itself, and build the automated infrastructure needed to operate without people.

From there, he said, it could reshape the planet around its own objectives, potentially making it uninhabitable for humans — a warning he shared with Business Insider last year.  businessinsider.com

In-Store Payment Options Can Be a Deal-Breaker
Survey: Consumers willing to abandon purchases over lack of payment options
A retailer not offering a wide range of in-store payment options can be a dealbreaker for many consumers.

More than half (53%) of U.S. consumers would refuse to shop where their chosen method isn't taken, according to a new survey from in-person payment orchestration platform Aevi. The vast majority (85%) of those surveyed want paying in store to be as easy as paying online.

More than a third (36%) of U.S. shoppers abandoned an in-store purchase over a payment problem in the past year, including 10% in the past month. Almost half (44%) said they are less likely to return after a slow or failed payment.

Younger consumers value convenient payment methods the most. A third (33%) of 18 to 24-year-olds named payment failures as a top frustration, compared to 10% of those older than 65. chainstoreage.com

When Will Consumers Begin Holiday Shopping?
Walmart: Here’s when consumers plan to start holiday shopping
New data from Walmart Inc. reveals consumer attitudes and intentions for this holiday shopping season.

First-party data from Walmart customers indicates that close to four-in-10 (38%) intend to begin their holiday shopping from October through the first half of November. Another 20% plan to start shopping for the holidays from Thanksgiving weekend through Cyber Monday and 10% will begin between Dec. 1-15.

The “Walmart 2026 Holiday Trend Report” also indicates 2% will wait until Dec. 16 or later. Close to nine-in-10 Walmart customers plan to kick off holiday shopping before Dec. 1, and 27% say they will start earlier than last year, with the top reasons being skipping the last-minute scramble and spreading out their spending. However, in 2025, half of Walmart shoppers had not completed their seasonal purchases a week before Christmas. chainstoreage.com

Gatekeeper Systems enhances FaceFirst to combat violence and loss

Next-generation facial recognition built to help you keep people and spaces safer

FaceFirst alerts your team when an enrolled known offender walks in, now with faster performance, a streamlined interface, and more features to empower your team.

Foothill Ranch CA, October 28, 2026 — Gatekeeper Systems, a global leader in intelligent loss prevention and safety solutions, today announced the launch of the new FaceFirst, a next-generation facial recognition platform designed to preempt retail violence and loss. FaceFirst identifies known offenders the moment they enter a location, giving security teams the immediate intelligence they need for human review, decision-making, and response.

The new FaceFirst delivers even faster performance, a streamlined UI, and a modern architecture with enhanced security, privacy, and compliance features.

Detailed solution information and implementation strategies are available at gatekeepersystems.com/facefirst-next-generation/.

The FaceFirst update introduces a modern framework and streamlines the user interface while increasing system speed and performance. FaceFirst now integrates the separate portal, dashboards, and insights panels into a single, cohesive environment. This new interface lets loss prevention and security professionals complete common tasks with fewer clicks and delivers extensive new analytics, data governance, and audit features.

Advanced security, intelligence, and compliance features

  • Accomplice Linking: Helps identify and track associations among known offenders to uncover organized retail crime networks and fraud rings.

  • Criminal Behavior Analysis: Provides visibility to known offender patterns in monitored stores across multiple cities and states to help retailers build prosecutable cases and prevent repeat offenses.

  • Data Governance and Compliance: Expanded tools to help ensure responsible technology use and comply with privacy laws and regulations.

  • Enhanced Mapping: Provides visibility into top repeat offender locations and pre-enrollment visit history to improve resource allocation.

FaceFirst integrates ROC’s facial recognition algorithm, which is ranked #1 among American developers and #3 globally based on the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Face Recognition Technology Evaluation (FRTE) testing. FaceFirst continues to deliver rapid matching capabilities that are critical for threat recognition and mitigation. This accuracy and speed are now paired with a streamlined navigation menu and faster event-resolution tagging, so security personnel spend less time managing software and more time protecting employees, customers, and inventory.

The FaceFirst update also prioritizes responsible AI use through expanded data governance features. As facial recognition technology becomes a standard component of the retail safety stack, these additional compliance tools provide the necessary framework for transparency and ethical oversight. These updates reflect a direct response to the growing complexity of retail environments, where rapid threat recognition is essential to loss-prevention and workplace-violence-prevention strategies.

“The next-generation FaceFirst represents the evolution of facial recognition for life safety and loss prevention,” said Eric Schoch, CEO of Gatekeeper Systems. “When a known repeat offender enters a store, FaceFirst’s real-time alerts give associates the opportunity to engage early with attentive, service-oriented interaction. That presence alone often resolves the situation—no escalation, no loss.”

“We’ve taken an industry-leading solution and made it more accessible and efficient for loss prevention teams,” said Matt Howard, Vice President & Head of Product at Gatekeeper Systems. “The new FaceFirst empowers responders with even faster performance, a streamlined interface, and the continued confidence that comes from the integration of top NIST-ranked technology.”

Retail Customer Data Exposed Through Vendors
Breach victims discover their data was held by companies they’ve never heard of
Nearly seven in ten people affected by data breaches handled by Kroll were exposed through an outside supplier, according to its Data Breach Outlook 2026.

Businesses rely on outside providers to store information, process transactions and operate software. A breach at one of those providers can expose customer records across multiple organizations, including people who have never heard of the company holding their data.

“Across most of the major incidents we handled over the past year, a vendor, software supplier or service provider was the link between the initial breach and the organizations affected. One incident can reach businesses and individuals who have never dealt directly with the company where the compromise began,” said Denyl Green, Global Head of Breach Notification at Kroll.

Technology companies accounted for 6% of breach cases and 60% of affected individuals.

Providers serving multiple clients can hold records belonging to customers across several industries. A compromise at one company can require many organizations to investigate their exposure.

For example, several retailers might use the same provider to manage customer records. A theft from that provider could expose information belonging to each retailer. Subcontractors can extend the chain when a supplier uses another company to store or process its clients’ data.

The MOVEit file-transfer attacks illustrate this. Organizations were exposed through their own use of the software and through vendors that used it to handle their information.

After a supplier breach, each client needs to establish if its records were involved, which details were exposed and who needs to be notified. Those decisions may depend on evidence from the compromised provider.

“Cyber insurers now know that identifying dependencies on common vendors is critical to assessing and minimizing the risk that one breach will impact many policyholders.”   helpnetsecurity.com

Customer Records Compromised
Data breach at Sony-owned internet provider compromises 2.6 million customer records
Attackers who broke into the So-net member database made off with personal information belonging to more than 2.58 million current and former customers, along with the email passwords of 54,401 users, Sony Network Communications has disclosed.

So-net is a Japanese internet service provider run by Sony Network Communications, part of the Sony Group.

“We have confirmed an information leak caused by unauthorized access to the member database,” the company said in a notice published on October 27, apologizing to customers for “the great inconvenience and concern” the incident has caused.

The attack on the database took place on October 19, and the company confirmed it on October 23. “After confirming this, we promptly stopped the affected server and cut off communications from the source of the unauthorized access,” the notice reads.

The stolen So-net records belong to 1,869,771 current members and 272,215 people who left the service in March 2026 or later, for a total of 2,141,986. Another 443,495 records come from plala (S Course), including 21,130 former members. helpnetsecurity.com

Hackers Impersonate IT Support on Teams
Hackers bury inboxes in spam then show up on Microsoft Teams posing as IT support
Threat actors are flooding employees’ inboxes with spam and then contacting them on Microsoft Teams as IT support, offering to fix the problem they created, Arctic Wolf has found.

The security company documented more than 400 incidents in which the external chat feature in Teams was abused. In many of these cases, the fake help desk message arrived minutes after the victim’s inbox had been filled with hundreds of newsletter and subscription confirmations.

“Microsoft Teams ships with external access (federation) turned on by default, meaning any Teams user in another Microsoft 365 tenant can find, chat with, and call an organization’s employees, provided both tenants allow external access. This is the feature attackers most frequently abuse. This activity does not exploit any known Teams vulnerability; it abuses a legitimate, default-on collaboration capability,” researchers explained.

Moving the conversation to Teams also helps the scammers get past people’s usual defenses. “Employees are generally trained to treat email with suspicion,” the researchers noted, but a message that shows up inside the company’s own Teams environment tends to get around that caution. helpnetsecurity.com

196 Million Counterfeits Intercepted
Record number of counterfeit products intercepted in EU
Customs authorities and other enforcement agencies in the EU intercepted a record 196 million suspected counterfeit items last year, with a total estimated value of 6.3 billion euros. That is 67 percent more than in 2024.

This is according to a report by the European Commission and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Formally, the figures concern items suspected of infringing intellectual property rights. Of the 196 million items intercepted, 154 million were detained within the EU. The remaining 42 million were intercepted at the EU’s external borders, more than double the number recorded a year earlier.

The total estimated value of goods intercepted at the EU’s external borders was around 2 billion euros. Most detention cases by EU customs authorities involved express courier shipments (45,094 cases last year) and postal consignments (26,453 cases), which are “typically related to ecommerce”, according to the European Commission.

Commenting on the figures, the European Commission highlighted the challenges facing customs authorities: “Customs face increasing challenges due to the growing volume of goods entering the EU through ecommerce, combined with fragmented supply chains and diverse transport methods. This makes identifying and intercepting counterfeit goods increasingly difficult.”

The European Commission points to the recently adopted Customs Reform, which will introduce an EU Customs Authority and an EU Customs Data Hub to track supply chains in real time and identify high-risk shipments more quickly.

Brussels is also using levies to curb the influx of counterfeit and low-quality products, particularly from China, while promoting fair competition, more efficient customs clearance and product safety. In addition to the 3-euro import duty and the upcoming 2-euro customs clearance fee, the European Commission is working on a surveillance fee aimed at improving product inspections. ecommercenews.eu

Online Shopping Safety
TikTok Shop, DTI promote safer online shopping practices
TikTok Shop is strengthening consumer protection measures in the Philippines through stricter seller verification, product compliance checks and buyer support mechanisms as online shopping platforms face growing scrutiny over counterfeit and unsafe products.

The e-commerce platform reported that it rejected more than 208 million products globally before listing between July 2025 and July 2026, according to its latest Global Safety Report.

The figure represented 99 percent of products found to violate platform policies that were proactively removed before reaching consumers. Another two million restricted or prohibited products were removed after listing, TikTok Shop said in a statement.

The measures form part of TikTok Shop's efforts to improve transaction safety and consumer confidence as more Filipinos use digital platforms to purchase goods and services. insiderph.com

The Best Solution Providers Know They're
Occasionally Selling Against "Do Nothing"

The competitor isn't always another vendor. Sometimes it's an old process that everyone already understands, even if it's inefficient. That's a harder opponent than people realize because “do nothing” requires no implementation, no budget meeting, and no new password. To beat it, the value has to be obvious enough to make change worth the trouble.
