NRF Big Show 2026

Hedgie's Day 3 Dispatch & The Wrap-Up (Hedgie Style, Extra Sauce)

By Hedgie Bartol, LPQ, LPC

Day Three at NRF is where the caffeine gets stronger, the shoes get more uncomfortable, and everyone suddenly remembers they have flights to catch. It’s also the day when the truth starts slipping out. The sales pitches get shorter, the questions get sharper, and nobody has patience left for anything that smells like “a pitch.”

And for me, Day Three comes with a twist. I’m packing up, hopping on the subway, and heading straight to the LPRC Kick Off, because NRF is where we talk about what’s shiny… and LPRC is where we find out what actually works.

That’s a pretty good handoff.

Day Three: The “Alright, Show Me” Day

By now, nobody is impressed by:

  • Big screens

  • Bigger promises

  • Or booths that look like a Vegas nightclub

We’re impressed by:

  • Systems that integrate

  • Platforms that simplify

  • And technology that doesn’t require a PhD to operate

The vibe today was less “Look what we built!” and more “Here’s what you can actually do with it.

Three Truths That Hit Home

1. Integration Is Sexy Now

Ten years ago, integration was the boring slide at the end of the deck. Now? It’s the main event. If your solution doesn’t:

  • Talk to case management

  • Connect to video

  • Feed investigations

  • And play nice with others

…it’s not innovative. It’s lonely. Retailers want fewer logins, fewer vendors, and fewer systems that “almost” work together.

2. Data Is Only Cool When It Moves

Every booth claims they have “great data.” Cool story. What do you do with it? The smart platforms are turning:

  • Events into evidence

  • Evidence into cases

  • And cases into court-ready outcomes

If your data just sits there looking pretty, it’s just digital wallpaper.

3. Confidence Is the Real Product

Nobody is really buying cameras. Nobody is really buying AI. Nobody is really buying dashboards. They’re buying the ability to sleep at night. Confidence that:

  • You won’t miss the big one

  • You won’t get surprised in a meeting

  • You won’t be explaining failures instead of showing wins

That’s what closes deals.

Why LPRC Is the Perfect After-Party (With Lab Coats)

Heading from NRF straight to the LPRC Kick Off is like going from the showroom to the wind tunnel. NRF is:

  • The sizzle

  • The sparkle

  • The “what if”

LPRC is:

  • The science

  • The proof

  • The “does it actually reduce loss?”

One is Vegas. The other is MythBusters. And you need both if you’re serious.

Hedgie’s Final Bow on NRF 2026

NRF 2026 wasn’t about being impressed. It was about being convinced. We’re officially past the phase where:

  • AI is optional

  • Integration is negotiable

  • And standalone systems are acceptable

Now it’s about:

  • Simplicity

  • Reliability

  • And technology that survives real retail chaos

So I’m trading the Javits Center for LPRC, swapping buzzwords for benchmarks, and chasing something far more valuable than hype: Results. Because in this business, flashy fades… but proof pays.

The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact

Combatting ORC Act Moves Forward in Congress
RILA Statement on House Judiciary Mark-Up on CORCA
The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) issued the following statement commending the House Judiciary Committee for passing the Combatting Organized Retail Crime Act (CORCA):

“Leading retailers commend the House Judiciary Committee for advancing the Combatting Organized Retail Crime Act, a critical step toward protecting retail workers, supply chains, and communities from the ongoing threat of organized retail crime,” said Sarah Gilmore, RILA senior director, government affairs. “American consumers and businesses deserve to be protected from criminal networks engaged in gift card fraud, cargo theft and increasingly violent in-store ORC incidents. CORCA provides the tools necessary for coordinated action, ensuring that law enforcement and industry partners can stay ahead of these evolving threats.”

If enacted, CORCA will strengthen investigative resources, facilitate information sharing, and foster partnerships across federal, state, and local agencies. The retail community stands ready to work alongside policymakers, law enforcement, and other stakeholders to advance this essential legislation and protect businesses, workers, and consumers from the growing threat of organized retail crime.

"Advancing the Combatting Organized Retail Crime Act out of the House Judiciary Committee is a vital move toward safeguarding retailers and our communities. We applaud Republican and Democratic lawmakers for prioritizing protecting consumers and we urge the full House to pass this bipartisan legislation," said Gilmore.

CORCA is sponsored by Reps. Dave Joyce (R-OH), Susie Lee (D-NV), David Valadao (R-CA), Dina Titus (D-NV), Michael Baumgartner (R-WA), Brad Schneider (D-IL), Laurel Lee (R-FL), and Lou Correa (D-CA). The bill has strong bipartisan support with a total of 197 House co-sponsors.

Broad stakeholder support for CORCA was demonstrated last year when RILA joined a coalition of retailers, manufacturers, and industry associations in sending a letter to congressional leadership urging swift passage of the bill. This coalition effort underscores the widespread recognition that organized retail crime and cargo theft pose a serious threat to businesses, workers, and consumers nationwide. rila.org

Can New 'Just Walk Out' Lanes Help Reduce Theft?
Amazon's new portable Just Walk Out lanes bring checkout-free shopping to pop-up venues

Enhanced RFID lanes deploy in hours at events as the technology expands to hundreds of locations worldwide.

Amazon is announcing the next generation of our radio frequency identification (RFID) lanes that are portable and can be deployed in hours, not weeks—ideal for pop-up shops, festivals, and temporary retail locations. This builds on the RFID technology we pioneered in 2023 for merchandise: walk-through lanes that use RFID tags to automatically detect what customers are carrying, so they can simply grab items and walk out by tapping their card to pay.

The latest RFID lanes feature three enhancements that make checkout even faster and easier. In-lane screens with an intuitive user interface guide shoppers through the checkout process while displaying cart totals. Motorized gates automatically open and close for seamless traffic flow. Dynamic pre-authorization gives customers greater cart visibility to help ensure they know what they’re spending before completing their purchase. Previously, customers using RFID lanes had to push through manual gates and wait until after checkout to see their cart total—now these enhancements give customers greater cart visibility and automated guidance through the checkout process.

Amazon's Just Walk Out technology uses two approaches to eliminate checkout lines. Our computer vision systems excel at tracking every item interaction in real time, ideal for items with rigid shapes and packaging such as packaged snacks and beverages. These camera-based systems can detect when customers pick up, move, or put back items.

Using specialized readers to detect unique tags on merchandise, the updated RFID lanes leverage multiple antennas and smart algorithms that detect everything a customer is carrying. Each lane can handle up to six transactions per minute—making these lanes five to ten times faster than a traditional checkout. Built-in loss prevention also automatically detects unpaid items and closes exit gates when necessary, while ensuring paying customers never experience delays or false alarms. This accurate tracking capability helps retailers reduce theft while improving the customer experience. The updated RFID lanes have rolled out to 17 pilot locations in 2025—including a pop-up at the Camp Flog Gnaw music festival with Amazon Music selling artist merchandise and a store at the Circuit of the Americas racetrack operated by Proof of the Pudding selling concessions. aboutamazon.com

Will D.C. Address Cargo Theft 'Crisis'?
Federal Lawmakers Target Rising Cargo Theft Across Supply Chain
The transportation industry faces a rising problem with cargo theft, and it appears that the federal government is poised to do something about it.

A bipartisan bill introduced in the U.S. Senate in 2025, along with a companion bill in the House, is designed to crack down on thefts. The chief points of the Combating Organized Retail Crime Act (CORCA) would create a federal database within the Department of Homeland Security and enhance penalties for supply chain theft.

The transportation industry obviously supports the legislation, which is working its way through the political process. American Trucking Associations CEO Chris Spear told a House Judiciary subcommittee in December that the “rapid rise” of cargo theft amounts to an “escalating crisis.”

The National Retail Federation has said that cargo thefts cost the industry about $35 billion a year. “This is money that belongs in consumers’ wallets, not criminals’ pockets,” Spear said.

The nonprofit American Transportation Research Institute released a theft report in October. The survey of motor carriers and logistics companies revealed that cargo theft costs carriers between $1.8 billion and $6.6 billion annually.

The news isn’t great for Arkansas, which ranks as the ninth-worst state for cargo theft for motor carriers, according to the ATRI. Cargo thefts are broken down into three generalized categories: straight, pilferage and strategic.    arkansasbusiness.com

Difference Between Flash Mob Theft & Typical Shoplifting
What police officers need to know about flash mob shoplifting

What FBI data shows about coordinated retail theft and how it differs from typical shoplifting

Flash mob shoplifting is often referenced in broader conversations about organized retail crime, but what qualifies as a flash mob — and how these incidents differ from more typical shoplifting cases — is not always clearly defined.

To address that gap, the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program analyzed five years of National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) data, examining flash mob shoplifting incidents reported between 2020 and 2024. The report outlines how these incidents are identified, when and where they most often occur, and how they compare to non-flash mob shoplifting cases.

Here are five key findings from the FBI’s analysis:

1. Flash mob shoplifting is identified by specific criteria.
2. Flash mob shoplifting represents a small share of overall shoplifting.
3. Flash mob shoplifting incidents are more likely to involve additional offenses.
4. Flash mob shoplifting timing and locations show measurable patterns.
5. Clothing is the most frequently stolen item during flash mob shoplifting.

Overdoses Account for 10% of Workplace Deaths
Snapshot of Employee Drug Use

Workplace drug use did not trend down in 2025

With the recent confirmation of Sarah Bailey as the Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, the National Safety Council took the opportunity to remind safety professionals that in the workplace, overdoses account for 10% of all deaths on the job.

NSC reported that emergency medical services were activated over 12,600 times to respond to potential opioid overdoses occurring in workplace settings in 2024.

Also, last year, in July, a study from The Ohio State University found that 9% of young US employees use alcohol and drugs at work.

Among respondents, 8.9% of workers reported any substance use in the workplace, including 5.6% drinking alcohol, 3.1% using marijuana and 0.8% taking cocaine or other hard drugs, a category that also included opioids.

The industries that saw the highest use were in food preparation and construction.

I would note that the data in this study is older since it's hard to come by this data. Efforts to secure better data were taken in 2025 by the Department of Transportation to add a rule that would require fentanyl and norfentanyl mandatory drug testing panels for transportation workers under federal jurisdiction, as reported by EHS contributor David Sparkman.

And in 2025, fentanyl positivity tested on a random basis was found to be more than seven times higher in pre-employment testing. ehstoday.com

Using AI to Improve Customer Experience
Ulta teases future AI use cases
Executives from the beauty retailer hinted at building agents and utilizing AI to improve personalization for loyalty members. Ulta is eyeing AI to improve its loyalty member experience, according to the retailer’s CEO Kecia Steelman.

The chief executive spoke at The National Retail Federation’s 2026 Big Show in New York City on Monday, noting that AI technologies have the potential to help Ulta leverage its existing customer data to make product recommendations more personalized and predictive.

But Steelman stressed that with a majority of the company’s sales still coming through stores, it’s important to consider how AI can be utilized to improve associates’ product knowledge and interactions with customers.

Meanwhile in a separate session at the conference, the retailer’s senior vice president of e-commerce and digital, Josh Friedman, said that Ulta is working to develop its own AI agents. Friedman said that Ulta’s agent roadmap is still a work in progress, but the company thinks it knows what types of agents it wants to build out. retaildive.com

Big Brand Tire & Service Eliminates After-Hours Break-Ins with Interface Virtual Perimeter Guard

AI-enabled perimeter monitoring eliminates overnight break-ins
and cuts security activations by 65 percent

St. Louis, MO, Jan. 13, 2026 -- Interface Systems, a leading managed service provider delivering remote video monitoring, commercial security systems, business intelligence, and network services for multi-location enterprises, today announced that Big Brand Tire & Service, one of the nation’s fastest-growing independent tire and automotive service providers, has eliminated costly overnight break-ins and significantly reduced trespassing and vandalism at a high-risk location. The company achieved these results by deploying Interface Virtual Perimeter Guard, an AI-powered perimeter security solution designed to deter incidents before they occur.

Operating more than 300 locations nationwide, Big Brand Tire & Service faced persistent after-hours security challenges at several sites. Store perimeters became frequent targets for trespassing, illegal encampments, and theft of high-value items, including tires and tools. Incidents also included repeated vandalism, such as broken windows and property damage, creating safety concerns and operational disruption.

Interface deployed its AI-powered Virtual Perimeter Guard at a high-risk Big Brand Tire location using the existing network infrastructure, allowing the system to be implemented without interrupting daily operations. During an initial calibration phase, the system learned the site’s environment and activity patterns to improve detection accuracy.

Following deployment, the site saw immediate and measurable results. Break-ins stopped entirely after installation, and monitoring reports showed a steep decline in trespassing and loitering as repeat offenders stopped returning. Ninety-one percent of events were resolved through automated deterrence without human intervention, and overall security activations were reduced by 65 percent within weeks.

The improvements also had a direct impact on daily operations, reducing late-night alerts and eliminating the need for overnight responses to secure the property.

Based on the success of the initial deployment, Big Brand Tire & Service is now evaluating a broader rollout of Virtual Perimeter Guard across additional locations as part of its perimeter security strategy.

How Retailers Can Defend Against Ransomware Attacks
Retail ransomware attacks often start in Active Directory: Here’s how to defend it

Threat actors actively exploit weaknesses in on-premises Active Directory security to deploy ransomware attacks in the retail sector.

In April 2025, Marks & Spencer (M&S) was hit by one of the most disruptive ransomware attacks ever reported against a UK retailer. The incident quickly turned into a case study of a cyberattack's worst-case scenario: months of disruption across the business and its supply chain, with costs from incident response and lost revenue running to hundreds of millions of dollars.

What happened to M&S was a huge event. Yet it later emerged that that attack began with a single reset of a privileged employee credential at an external service provider. It’s a powerful reminder that even the smallest missteps, misconfigurations, and lack of basic controls such as multi-factor authentication (MFA) can lead to major consequences. It also reminds us that no one is immune to a ransomware attack, not even the most well-resourced enterprises.

What the retail sector can learn from the M&S breach

The M&S ransomware attack highlights broad issues that can affect any organization. But for the retail sector in particular, the lessons are many:

  • Modern retail networks are hard to defend. They rely on long supply chains built on top of data sharing, third-party service providers, and complex layers of trust. There’s a lot that can go wrong, and any point in this mesh of cooperating organizations can suddenly become a weakness.

  • Many retailers and their partners still rely on a core of legacy apps and on-premises Active Directory (AD). This might seem like a side issue, but it’s important to bear in mind when considering how to defend these networks.

  • Protecting AD is essential to retail cybersecurity. The attackers in the M&S incident used compromised (reset) credentials to target AD, specifically the domain controller file ntds.dit (NT Directory Services) that stores user accounts, group memberships, and domain password hashes.

This shows how threat actors are actively exploiting any weaknesses in on-premises security, whether it’s weak credentials, a lack of deeper account monitoring, a lack of strong authentication, or company processes that can be socially engineered.

The main takeaway: Attackers adapt quickly to target on-prem AD vulnerabilities, while defenders continue to rely on outdated assumptions. isdecisions.com

Cybersecurity Spending Up
Majority of hedge funds boosted cybersecurity spending in 2025

About half of firms suffered a breach, and a large percentage cited third-party risks.

Eight of every 10 hedge funds and other investment firms increased spending on cybersecurity in 2025, according to a report Tuesday from the Hedge Fund Association and SeaGlass Technology.

About half of these firms said they were breached over the past 12 months. The survey is based on responses from 400 executives at these firms, including hedge fund managers, institutional investors and industry service providers.

Phishing was the top concern of about two-thirds of those surveyed. About half of respondents said incidents were linked to third-party risk, which has increasingly been a concern across industries as companies become more interconnected.

These firms plan to boost spending over the next 12 to 24 months to boost resilience. Priorities include incident response, threat detection, cloud and endpoint security, and identity and access management.

Cybersecurity has been a growing area of concern among investment firms in recent years. These firms are among the most heavily regulated among all industries, yet, because they control so much money, they remain appealing targets for bad actors. cybersecuritydive.com

A New Kind of Phishing on the Rise?
Browser-in-the-Browser phishing is on the rise: Here’s how to spot it
Browser-in-the-Browser (BitB) phishing attacks are on the rise, with attackers reviving and refining the technique to bypass user skepticism and traditional security controls.

BitB phishing: Dangerous and effective

For BitB phishing, attackers create a pop-up window inside a real web page (browser) by using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The goal is to trick users into entering login credentials by making them believe they are on a legitimate login page.

The technique is being used to target users of popular services and brands like Microsoft, Facebook, the Steam gaming platform, and others.

Trellix researchers say that for Facebook users, attackers are faking legal notices, “Account Suspension” alerts, “Action Required” emails, and “Unauthorized Login” alerts to trick users into visiting the phishing pages. helpnetsecurity.com

Walmart Leans Into AI Shopping
Walmart teams up with Google’s Gemini for AI-assisted shopping

Incoming CEO John Furner said the company is rewriting the retail playbook, in part with new agentic AI capabilities.

Walmart on Sunday debuted plans for a new consumer experience directly in Google’s AI chatbot Gemini, adding to its list of AI initiatives with external partners.

The plan will allow Gemini users to discover Walmart and Sam’s Club merchandise when conducting research, with Gemini automatically including in-store and online products in response to queries when relevant. If Gemini users decide they want to buy a product, the transactions are then completed within Walmart’s checkout environment.

The experience will first launch within Gemini in the U.S., then internationally.

Incoming Walmart CEO John Furner spoke alongside Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai about the development at The National Retail Federation’s 2026 Big Show in New York City on Sunday.

Pichai also revealed a new suite of agentic AI tools for retailers through Gemini. The tech company launched its Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard for agentic commerce meant to be used across the shopping journey from discovery to decision.

Google has seen a significant year over year increase in the usage of its AI by retailers, Pichai noted. “We want to use our full stack approach to help you shape this next chapter of retail,” Pichai said. retaildive.com

Drone Delivery Expansion
Walmart to expand drone delivery to an additional 150 stores nationwide
Walmart continues to expand its partnership with Wing, an on-demand drone delivery provider powered by Google parent company Alphabet.

The retail giant will expand Wing’s “ultra-fast” service to an additional 150 Walmart stores over the next year, giving it a network of more than 270 drone delivery locations in 2027. The network will stretch from Los Angeles to Miami, and service about 40 million Americans. The expansion builds on the success of operations in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and metro Atlanta, according to a Wing release.

Wing and Walmart’s new service areas will include major metropolitan hubs such as Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Miami, with others to be announced later. The new markets expand Walmart’s previously announced expansion markets of Houston; Orlando and Tampa, Fla.; and Charlotte, N.C.
