NRF Big Show 2026

Hedgie's Day 3 Dispatch & The Wrap-Up (Hedgie Style, Extra Sauce)

By Hedgie Bartol, LPQ, LPC

Day Three at NRF is where the caffeine gets stronger, the shoes get more uncomfortable, and everyone suddenly remembers they have flights to catch. It’s also the day when the truth starts slipping out. The sales pitches get shorter, the questions get sharper, and nobody has patience left for anything that smells like “a pitch.”

And for me, Day Three comes with a twist. I’m packing up, hopping on the subway, and heading straight to the LPRC Kick Off, because NRF is where we talk about what’s shiny… and LPRC is where we find out what actually works.

That’s a pretty good handoff.

Day Three: The “Alright, Show Me” Day

By now, nobody is impressed by:

  • Big screens

  • Bigger promises

  • Or booths that look like a Vegas nightclub

We’re impressed by:

  • Systems that integrate

  • Platforms that simplify

  • And technology that doesn’t require a PhD to operate

The vibe today was less “Look what we built!” and more “Here’s what you can actually do with it.

Three Truths That Hit Home

1. Integration Is Sexy Now

Ten years ago, integration was the boring slide at the end of the deck. Now? It’s the main event. If your solution doesn’t:

  • Talk to case management

  • Connect to video

  • Feed investigations

  • And play nice with others

…it’s not innovative. It’s lonely. Retailers want fewer logins, fewer vendors, and fewer systems that “almost” work together.

2. Data Is Only Cool When It Moves

Every booth claims they have “great data.” Cool story. What do you do with it? The smart platforms are turning:

  • Events into evidence

  • Evidence into cases

  • And cases into court-ready outcomes

If your data just sits there looking pretty, it’s just digital wallpaper.

3. Confidence Is the Real Product

Nobody is really buying cameras. Nobody is really buying AI. Nobody is really buying dashboards. They’re buying the ability to sleep at night. Confidence that:

  • You won’t miss the big one

  • You won’t get surprised in a meeting

  • You won’t be explaining failures instead of showing wins

That’s what closes deals.

Why LPRC Is the Perfect After-Party (With Lab Coats)

Heading from NRF straight to the LPRC Kick Off is like going from the showroom to the wind tunnel. NRF is:

  • The sizzle

  • The sparkle

  • The “what if”

LPRC is:

  • The science

  • The proof

  • The “does it actually reduce loss?”

One is Vegas. The other is MythBusters. And you need both if you’re serious.

Hedgie’s Final Bow on NRF 2026

NRF 2026 wasn’t about being impressed. It was about being convinced. We’re officially past the phase where:

  • AI is optional

  • Integration is negotiable

  • And standalone systems are acceptable

Now it’s about:

  • Simplicity

  • Reliability

  • And technology that survives real retail chaos

So I’m trading the Javits Center for LPRC, swapping buzzwords for benchmarks, and chasing something far more valuable than hype: Results. Because in this business, flashy fades… but proof pays.

The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact

How Do Ice Raids Impact Retail?
Increased ICE Enforcement Ripples Through Retail Corridors

By the D&D Daily staff

As federal authorities expand Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in multiple U.S. cities, enforcement activity and related unrest are beginning to affect local retail environments, particularly in immigrant-heavy neighborhoods.

In recent weeks, heightened ICE presence in metropolitan areas including Los Angeles, Chicago and Minneapolis has coincided with declines in foot traffic and consumer activity in nearby commercial districts. Local business owners have reported fewer in-store visits, shorter shopping trips and reduced discretionary spending as residents seek to limit public exposure during enforcement operations.

In some Midwestern cities, small and immigrant-owned retailers have noted measurable slowdowns in daily sales following reports of nearby raids. Business operators say customers are increasingly opting to stay home or rely on delivery and curbside pickup options when enforcement activity is rumored or confirmed. Several retailers have adjusted operating hours, staffing levels or service models in response.

Economists and labor analysts say the pattern reflects broader economic disruption tied to aggressive immigration enforcement. When workers avoid jobs and families reduce routine errands due to fear of detention, retail corridors can experience sudden and sustained drops in activity. These effects are most pronounced in neighborhoods where immigrant labor and consumer spending play a central role in local commerce.

Enforcement actions have also sparked protests and unrest in several cities, further complicating retail operations. In parts of Los Angeles, demonstrations erupted near open-air markets and shopping districts following raids, prompting temporary closures and reduced customer access. In other locations, protests have targeted major retail chains amid allegations that agents conducted arrests near store properties, raising concerns among retailers about reputational risk and customer safety.

Nationally, ICE operations have expanded under the Trump administration, with large-scale deployments reported in multiple regions. In Minneapolis, recent enforcement actions — including a fatal shooting connected to an operation — intensified protests and heightened community anxiety, contributing to additional disruptions for nearby businesses.

Retail Crime Falling in the Bay Area
These Bay Area cities recorded a noticeable dip in crime in 2025

The Bay Area’s largest cities also recorded historic lows in homicides and violent crime in 2025, marking a significant shift after years of elevated public safety concerns.

Property crimes, particularly “bipping,” the local term for car theft, have fueled a lasting stigma for the Bay Area’s biggest cities. In 2025, San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose all saw decreases in motor vehicle theft, larceny theft and burglaries.

In San Francisco, there was a 21% decrease in larceny theft, including retail theft. The police department reported 16,855 cases, compared with the 21,259 instances in 2024. Burglaries are also down significantly, with 3,729 in 2025, compared with 5,176 the previous year.

The decrease comes as the police department has launched large-scale retail theft blitz operations in recent years, with the latest resulting in 104 arrests. Motor vehicle theft, which has been a lingering concern in the city, often exacerbated by viral videos, saw a drop in 2025. There were 3,045 reports in 2025, down from 5,176 in 2024.

In Oakland, larceny theft decreased by 16%. The city saw 7,291 cases in 2025, a drop from 8,658 in 2024. One of the biggest reductions, though, was in motor vehicle theft, which fell by 40%, from 10,445 incidents in 2024 to 6,259 in 2025. Burglaries also saw a notable decline, dropping from 9,939 in 2024 to 8,368 in 2025.

The San Jose numbers echo regional trends. In 2025, larceny theft fell to 13,609 cases, down from 15,073 in 2024. Motor vehicle theft and burglaries also decreased, with 4,771 motor vehicle thefts reported, compared with 6,288 the year before, and 3,197 burglaries, down from 4,156 in 2024. sfgate.com

What Will Mamdani's Criminal Justice Policy Look Like?
Meet the Anti-Cop Activists Who Will Advise Mamdani on Criminal Justice

Many members of the mayor-elect’s Committee on Community Safety have long histories of anti-law-enforcement radicalism.

Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani wants to reimagine public safety in New York City. On the campaign trail, he promised to devote more than $1 billion to the “Department of Community Safety,” a new agency that will “tak[e] a public health approach to safety.”

But what will his agenda look like in practice? Late last month, the mayor-elect released the roster of his transition team’s Committee on Community Safety, a 26-person group that will advise him on criminal-justice and related issues. The list contains several activists who are not only openly hostile to law enforcement but also reject the very concept of carceral punishment. city-journal.org

Workplace Safety is Critical
Crucial Health and Safety Practices Every Employer Must Enforce

A Practical Guide to Protecting Employees, Ensuring Compliance, and Building a Safer Workplace

Creating a safe workplace isn't just about meeting legal obligations—it’s about building a sustainable, ethical, and high-performing business. When companies prioritize employee well-being, they reduce the risk of injuries, legal consequences, and operational disruptions. OSHA and other regulatory bodies have laid down clear guidelines to help employers maintain secure environments. These rules are designed to prevent accidents and illnesses, but their real value lies in protecting the people who keep businesses running.

Every business, regardless of size or industry, must take ownership of its safety practices. A proactive approach means recognizing that safety isn't a one-time setup—it’s an ongoing commitment. From the moment a new employee joins the team to daily operations years down the line, the rules must be clear, up to date, and enforced. Embedding workplace safety standards into the core of your operations leads to long-term gains in productivity, morale, and trust.

Employee Training: The First Line of Defense

Before employees can follow safety rules, they need to understand them. OSHA regulations require that employers train workers on the specific hazards they may encounter. This includes everything from operating machinery safely to responding during emergencies. Practical training must be tailored to each role and delivered in a way that all employees can understand, regardless of their language or educational background.

Training isn’t a one-time event. It should be reinforced regularly through workshops, digital modules, and on-the-job mentoring. Supervisors must be involved in the process, ensuring that employees not only attend training sessions but also apply what they’ve learned. Companies that invest in education cultivate a workforce that is alert, confident, and capable of managing risks before they escalate into incidents. vocal.media

Three US Cities Account for 60% of Notable Retail Expansion
JLL: Three U.S. cities dominate high-street retail growth
Prime urban retail is consolidating into a “winner-take-all” environment, dominated by three cities.

JLL’s latest “City Retail Report” revealed that New York, Los Angeles and Miami capture 60% of all notable retail expansion in prime urban corridors in the United States and Canada, and account for over 80% of luxury and “luxury-lite” openings.

New York City maintains its retail supremacy through sheer corridor depth, according to the report, with SoHo, Madison Avenue and Fifth Avenue each function as distinct luxury ecosystem. Los Angeles holds second place with the “Beverly Hills Triangle,” while Miami’s rise to third displaces Washington D.C., driven by the inclusion of Brickell and Coconut Grove, according to the report. chainstoreage.com

Cybersecurity Concerns Top of Mind for Execs
Executives worry most about cyber-enabled fraud, geopolitics and AI

The World Economic Forum’s wide-ranging new report also found strong global support for cyber regulation.

Cyber-enabled fraud is the top concern of corporate executives, eclipsing ransomware on IT and security leaders’ list of the most significant risks facing their organizations, according to a World Economic Forum report published on Monday.

Nearly three-quarters (73%) of respondents to WEF’s survey said that cyber-enabled fraud had affected them or someone they knew in 2025. The report also covered organizations’ cybersecurity responses to geopolitical risks, their AI fears and the biggest obstacles to improving cyber defenses.

The shift from ransomware to fraud reflects the continuing pervasiveness of simple but effective cyber scams, as well as executives’ firsthand experience with the devastating consequences of these attacks.

In 2025, CEOs said ransomware, cyber-enabled fraud and supply-chain disruptions were their top cyber-risk concerns. In 2026, their top-three list consists of cyber-enabled fraud, AI-related vulnerabilities and traditional software vulnerabilities. Among CISOs, ransomware still tops the list, followed by supply-chain threats and software vulnerabilities.

Executives ranked threats differently depending on how cyber-resilient they considered their organizations.

At high-resilience organizations, WEF found, CEOs were most concerned about AI, followed by cyber fraud and supply-chain threats. At low-resilience organizations, CEOs listed cyber fraud first, followed by ransomware attacks and traditional software flaws. “As resilience strengthens, risk perception shifts towards emerging threats,” the report said. “This suggests that resilient organizations are more attuned to the evolving risks posed by advanced technologies.”

As AI worries grow, executives are expressing concerns about a wide range of specific challenges, the WEF found in its report. Data leaks topped the list, earning mentions from 30% of CEOs, followed by hackers’ advancements (28%) and security flaws in AI systems (15%). Almost no one (6%) cited vulnerabilities in the AI code supply chain, even as that issue becomes more of a risk. cybersecuritydive.com

Massive Cyber Bust
Cyber fraud network behind $6.9 million in losses dismantled in Spain
The Spanish National Police (Policía Nacional), working closely with the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office (Bayerisches Landeskriminalamt) and with support from Europol, has carried out an operation targeting the international criminal organization known as Black Axe.

Black Axe is a highly structured, hierarchical group that originated in Nigeria and has a presence in dozens of countries worldwide.

The network is suspected of being involved in a wide range of criminal activities, including cyber-enabled fraud, drug trafficking, human trafficking and prostitution, kidnapping, armed robbery, and fraudulent spiritual practices.

In total, 34 people were arrested in Spain: 28 in Seville, three in Madrid, two in Málaga, and one in Barcelona. Investigators believe the network is responsible for fraud resulting in losses of more than €5,93 million. During the operation, authorities froze €119,352 in bank accounts and seized €66,403 in cash during house searches.

Europol played a key role by helping map the group’s structure in multiple countries, centralizing information, sharing intelligence packages, and supporting coordinated national investigations. helpnetsecurity.com

False Alarm!
There was no data breach, Instagram says

News of a possible Instagram data breach spread over the weekend after Malwarebytes reported that cybercriminals had stolen sensitive information from 17.5 million Instagram accounts, potentially leading to a surge in password reset requests.

Users have been complaining last week about receiving repeated password change requests, but Instagram parent company Meta has denied that a breach of their systems occurred.

“We fixed an issue that let an external party request password reset emails for some people,” the company stated on Sunday. “You can ignore those emails — sorry for any confusion.”

Malwarebytes’ warning was likely related to a recent report about a threat actor offering a massive trove of Instagram user data for download via a dark web forum. helpnetsecurity.com

Consumers Embracing AI Shopping More Than Ever
Adobe: Holiday Shopping Season Drove a Record $257.8 Billion Online with Consumers Embracing Generative AI Tools

Consumers spent more than $4 billion in a single day for 25 days during the 2025 holiday season, up from 18 days in 2024

Last week, Adobe released online shopping data for the 2025 holiday season, covering the period from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31, 2025. Based on Adobe Analytics data, the analysis provides the most comprehensive view into U.S. e-commerce by analyzing commerce transactions online, covering over 1 trillion visits to U.S. retail sites, 100 million SKUs and 18 product categories. Adobe Analytics is relied upon by the majority of the top 100 internet retailers in the U.S.* to deliver, measure and personalize shopping experiences online.

Consumers spent $257.8 billion online from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31, up 6.8% year-over-year (YoY) and setting a new record for e-commerce. 25 days saw consumers spend more than $4 billion in a single day (a significant jump from 18 days in 2024). Mobile shopping hit a new milestone, with the majority of online transactions (56.4%) taking place through a smartphone this season (up from 54.5% in 2024); Mobile shopping was highest on Christmas Day (Dec. 25), driving 66.5% of online sales (vs. 65% in 2024), followed by Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 27) at 61.6% mobile share (vs. 59.3% in 2024).

Record online spending this season was bolstered by a strong Cyber Week (the five days from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday), which brought in $44.2 billion online overall, up 7.7% YoY. Cyber Monday remained the biggest e-commerce day of the season (and year), driving $14.25 billion in online spend, up 7.1% YoY. Cyber Monday growth was outpaced by Black Friday ($11.8 billion, up 9.1% YoY), as consumers embraced earlier deals. On Thanksgiving Day, consumers spent $6.4 billion online, up 5.3% YoY.

Generative AI-powered chat services and browsers have become an integral tool for consumers to find deals and research products. This season, traffic to retail sites from generative AI tools (shoppers clicking on a link to a retail site) increased by 693.4% compared to the year prior. On Cyber Monday, AI traffic to U.S. retail sites increased by 670%. While the base of users remains modest, the uptick shows the value AI can deliver as a shopping assistant. These services were used most in categories including video games, toys, appliances, electronics and personal care products.

“This 2025 holiday season, consumers embraced generative AI more than ever as a shopping assistant in their purchasing decisions,” said Vivek Pandya, lead analyst, Adobe Digital Insights. “Competitive discounts and flexible payment options like Buy Now Pay Later also contributed to driving record spend of $257.8 billion throughout this holiday season.” news.adobe.com

Online Shopping Cannibalized In-Store Traffic?
Fewer shoppers visited Charlotte malls during the 2025 holiday season

Data shows declines in holiday mall traffic, as online shopping continued to capture more consumer spending

Placer.ai tracks foot traffic by using location data on mobile devices. It caveats its data by saying changes in foot traffic can be tied to a variety of factors, including calendar shifts, decreased consumer confidence, economic and tariff uncertainty, and weather conditions.

The traditional holiday shopping season — between Black Friday and Christmas Eve — was also compressed last year, with Thanksgiving falling in late November. For several years now, a broader trend has been observed within the retail industry of holiday shopping occurring earlier than Thanksgiving, even pushing into October or late September.

Although foot traffic was more subdued at many local centers in 2025, shoppers were out in full force online. U.S. consumers spent $257.8B online between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, up 6.8% year-over-year and setting a new e-commerce record, according to a recent analysis by Adobe Analytics, which analyzed 1 trillion-plus transactions on U.S. retail sites. charlotteledger.substack.com

Fort Lauderdale, FL: Masked burglars smash Fort Lauderdale vape shop—owner fights back, crew linked to 15 thefts
Surveillance video shows masked burglars attempting to break into a smoke shop early Sunday morning. The shop owner was there and chased them off. "As soon as it happened, we just ran out, barked a little bit, and got them out of here," said Marc Montalvo, 954 Vapes owner. Fort Lauderdale police said they were called to the store in the 6200 block of North Federal Highway around 4:30 a.m. "They were all wearing masks, and I want to assume just by the little bit I saw they looked kind of young I want to say possibly older teenagers to young 20- year-olds," Montalvo said. Montalvo told CBS News Miami the thieves left the bin behind when they ran off and police took it as evidence. He said other shop owners tell him they think they were hit by the same crew. "They could've filled up a lot, they could've done a lot of damage, they actually used that in 15 other burglaries," Montalvo said.  cbsnews.com

Cobourg, ON, Canada: 3 Brampton residents charged after traffic stop uncovers organized retail theft
Cobourg police say a late night traffic stop has led to organized retail theft charges against three Brampton residents, with a fourth suspect still being sought. Officers conducted the stop around 10:45 p.m. on January 4, 2026, after observing a driver improperly wearing a seatbelt. Police say they learned the driver was also operating the vehicle while under suspension. As the vehicle was being prepared for towing, officers say they discovered items consistent with organized retail theft. Following further investigation, police say they formed reasonable grounds that all occupants of the vehicle were involved in organized retail theft activity. Two Brampton men and a Brampton youth were arrested and charged with possession of property obtained by crime. The driver was also issued summonses for driving while suspended and failing to properly wear a seatbelt. Police executed a search warrant on the vehicle and seized a large quantity of merchandise believed to be stolen from retail locations across multiple jurisdictions. Items included more than 4,000 chocolate bars, sunglasses, cologne and perfume, candy and gum, cough lozenges, protein bars and energy products. The total estimated value of the seized property is approximately $16,183 northumberlanddaily.ca

Robberies, Incidents & Thefts

San Jose, CA: Shoppers on alert after Valley Fair Macy's smash-and-grab, 2nd major crime at mall in recent weeks
San Jose police are investigating a robbery at the Valley Fair mall that happened on Sunday afternoon. Right in the middle of a busy shopping day, three men with ski masks and hammers entered Macy's. They smashed cases in an attempt to steal expensive watches and stole the sense of security for shoppers as well. "The mall is a place since the 80s that families come together, have fun, grab a snack and shop - and to see someone with a sledge hammer, I would've been terrified," Raphaela Renner said. Broken glass and signs for Rolex watches were still left behind in the empty cases on Monday. "In the process of the strong-arm robbery, I know that they were able to smash the glass and take miscellaneous items," SJPD Public Information Representative Stacie Shih said. "I know at one point, there was a loss-prevention employee with the department store that was able to intercept one of the suspects." We learned at least one shopper also assisted following the robbery attempt, actually pulling the backpack off of that suspect when they fled the scene.  abc7news.com

The investigation, called “Operation Found Out,” targeted stores suspected of selling illegal drugs to the public, including minors. Detectives from the Stokes County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigation Division used an undercover officer to purchase marijuana and psilocybin products at shops in King, Pinnacle, and Walnut Cove.
