Fairfax, VA: Christmas Anti-Theft Team examines retail crime trends
Each holiday season, the Fairfax County Police Department places additional
officers at Tyson’s Corner Center, Tyson’s Galleria, the Fair Oaks mall and
Springfield Town Center. The additional officers, join the ones already
stationed in retail areas -- forming the Christmas Anti-Theft Team, or
CATT.
“Black Friday was an incredibly busy weekend for us, we had a number of cases,”
explained Lt. Charles Riddle, who supervises multiple teams in the Tyson’s area.
In the past five years, Riddle said officers in the Tyson’s area recovered close
to $2 million in physical property.
In an office, tucked away at Tyson’s, Riddle has tools criminals utilized in a
number of closed cases. From aluminum-lined boxes designed to trip sensors; to
presses, designed to create credit cards -- the tools range from relatively
complex, to incredibly basic. Due to relatively complex new technology,
Riddle said many criminals, are actually reverting back to basic tactics, and
tools.

Charlotte, NC: Drones, 'Bait' Cars Used in Salisbury Holiday Patrols
Grinches, be gone. That’s the message Salisbury Police is sending wannabe
thieves this holiday season with their Operation Santa Patrol. Because
officers say they see an uptick in shoplifters and car break-ins during the
season, they're deploying a drone in the downtown core and near big box stores
as a deterrent.
While virtually every business has a sophisticated surveillance system, many
people said having this extra layer of protection is great for shoppers and
stores alike. Other Santa Patrol methods include undercover officers and loading
up "bait" cars with fake merchandise.

Naples, FL: Michael Kors fire causes $8M in
damage,
reopening date unknown
The
Michael Kors shop at Miromar Outlets in Estero was closed Monday after a fire
caused about $8 million in damage on Thursday, according to a fire official. The
fire was caused by sparks from a light over storage racks in a backroom, said
Susan Lindenmuth, director of public affairs with Estero Fire Rescue.
The fire was investigated by the Lee County Fire-Arson Task Force along with the
State Fire Marshal's Office and was initially contained by two fire sprinklers.
The smoke damage to the store's merchandise was extensive, which is why the
damage was so costly, Lindenmuth said.

Convenience store operator goes digital with surveillance
Sprint Food Stores has taken its anti-theft efforts to the next level with an
advanced digital security-camera and recorder system. The cameras provide easily
retrievable and emailable surveillance video evidence (with clearer images) that
help deter theft and fraud and enable the retailer to efficiently monitor store
conditions from home, headquarters, or anywhere with an Internet connection.
“With an advanced surveillance camera system, a convenience store chain could
achieve ROI within a year through better prevention of theft, fraud, and
unjustified claims as well as improved operational oversight,” said Todd
Harrison, IT director, Sprint Food Stores, which operates 20 convenience
stores in Georgia and South Carolina. Harrison also oversees loss prevention
camera surveillance for the company.
Previously, Sprint Food Stores used lower resolution cameras that required
onsite DVD burning as a means of storage. According to Harrison, limitations in
surveillance video quality and connectivity were the main reasons that the
convenience store chain sought an alternative.
As a solution, Harrison turned to an advanced surveillance camera system
provided by ERC, a Kennesaw, Georgia-based supplier and integrator of
surveillance and POS systems. The company has provided over 10,000 stores
and restaurants with surveillance or POS systems including Arby’s, Popeyes, KFC
and Burger King.

12 NYC companies join the IMAGE program, including Five 7-Eleven franchises 'ICE Mutual Agreement between Government and Employers' A dozen New York based businesses have partnered with U.S. Immigration and
Customs Enforcement's (ICE), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in New York
Thursday by joining the agency’s employment compliance program IMAGE, or “ICE
Mutual Agreement between Government and Employers.”
Five
corporations, each individually owning one 7-Eleven franchise, joined the IMAGE
program. FYN Management, Inc.; HYN, Inc.; YN 1, Inc.; 5th Avenue Wali, Inc.;
and ZHSG, Inc. were represented by Yousaf Naseer, the President of all five
corporations. Combined, these companies employ approximately 60 individuals.
Four of the locations are located on Long Island and one is located in
Manhattan. Besides owning five franchises, Naseer is also the President of the
United Franchise Owners of Long Island & New York, which represents all of the
7-Eleven franchise owners on Long Island, in the Five Boroughs of New York City,
and in Westchester and Putnam Counties.
Yousaf Naseer of 7-11 stated, "I became a 7-Eleven franchisee in 1985 and have
been a part of United Franchise Owners of Long Island and New York (UFOLI) for
more than twenty-five years. I have served as President of UFOLI since 2017. As a 7-Eleven franchisee, I decided to participate in the IMAGE program to work
closely with Homeland Security Investigations, so that I can ensure that I have
established proper hiring procedures for my businesses. IMAGE provides me
with the training, tools, and resources I need to hire an authorized workforce
and to eliminate all clerical mistakes while properly completing the I-9 Forms.
The E- Verify program makes it easy for me, as an employer, to ensure that all
of my employees are authorized to work in the United States and that all of
their documents are authentic. It gives me the ability to avoid non-compliance
with the immigration laws.”
ice.gov
To qualify for IMAGE certification, partners agree to conduct a
self-assessment of their hiring practices to uncover vulnerabilities that could
be exploited by unauthorized workers; enroll in E-verify, an employment
eligibility verification program; train staff on IMAGE Best Employment Practices
and the use of new screening tools; and undergo a Form I-9 audit by ICE.
Companies interested in more information on the IMAGE program can visit

Wall Street Rule for the #MeToo Era: Avoid Women at All Cost
Interviews with more than 30 senior executives suggest many are spooked by #MeToo
and struggling to cope. “It’s creating a sense of walking on eggshells,” said
David Bahnsen, a former managing director at Morgan Stanley who’s now an
independent adviser overseeing more than $1.5 billion.
This is hardly a single-industry phenomenon, as men across the country check
their behavior at work, to protect themselves in the face of what they consider
unreasonable political correctness -- or to simply do the right thing. The
upshot is forceful on Wall Street, where women are scarce in the upper ranks.
The industry has also long nurtured a culture that keeps harassment complaints
out of the courts and public eye, and has so far avoided a mega-scandal like the
one that has engulfed Harvey Weinstein.

A Digital Onboarding Experience for Seasonal Hires
As a retailer, you’ve no doubt met your hiring quotas by now for the holiday
season. Next comes an equally weighty challenge: how to onboard, train, and most
importantly, engage those thousands of seasonal workers that Santa has so
generously placed under your corporate tree.
Although many organizations have standardized platforms to manage the recruiting
process, very few have a coordinated solution in place to welcome, onboard,
train, and engage seasonal workers. This is where digital workforce platforms
are changing the nature of employee engagement. Workforce portals intelligently
analyze and track each individual worker’s needs, customizing their personal
experience to match their situation as well as the company’s priorities.
Everyone has faced a “first day” scenario in which they feel unsure of what to
do, where to go, or what to expect. Digital workforce platforms, such as
Deloitte’s ConnectMe, which connects employees to relevant HR resources and
tools, combat this dilemma by providing the hand-holding new hires may need. As
a one-stop resource, these platforms or portals can also eliminate frustration
and bewilderment; instead of exposing new workers to four or five different
systems, a single employee platform gives them a much simpler experience.
Fragmentation, multiple log-ons, and information disconnects are no longer an
issue.

Jared And Kay Jewelers Fix Consumer Data Breach
Signet Jewelers, the company that owns Jared and Kay Jewelers, has fixed a
massive data breach that allowed anyone to view the order information of other
customers, including a home address and the last four digits of a purchaser’s
credit card, according to a Monday (December 3)
report.
The problem came to light in the middle of November, when a web designer in
Dallas named Brandon Sheehy bought a pair of earrings for his girlfriend from
Jared online.
Sheehy found out that when he modified the link in the confirmation email just
slightly, and pasted it into a web browser, he could see another customer’s
order. The information clearly showed the customer’s name, shipping and billing
address, phone number, email address, all items and total amounts, the delivery
date, the tracking link and the last four digits of the customer’s credit card
number.
Scott Lancaster, the chief information security officer at Signet, said the
company fixed the issue for all future orders, but until recently didn’t fix the
issue for past orders.

First Lawsuits Filed in Starwood Hotels' Breach
Legal fallout from the massive Starwood Hotels reservation breach reported last
week has begun, with class-action suits filed on behalf of both guests and
investors.
On Friday, Murphy, Falcon & Murphy, with co-counsel Morgan & Morgan, filed a
class-action suit against Marriott International on behalf of the 500 million
guests whose personal information was part of the breach. According to a
statement announcing the suit, "Marriott failed to ensure the integrity of its
servers and to properly safeguard consumers' highly sensitive and confidential
information."
The next day, Dec. 1, Rosen Law Firm announced that it had filed a class-action
suit on behalf of those who purchased Marriott International shares from Nov. 9,
2016, through the day prior to the suit's filing date. The suit claims that
Marriott International made misleading statements to shareholders by not finding
and disclosing the breach prior to the purchase of Starwood Hotels.
At least one additional lawsuit on behalf of guests has been filed, and more
lawsuits on behalf of both guests and shareholders are anticipated.

Security Breaches Come With High Price Tag for Business
With the busy Christmas shopping period now upon us, new research conducted on
behalf of payment security specialists PCI Pal has found that 44% of UK
consumers will stop spending with a business or brand for several months in the
immediate aftermath of a security breach or a hack.
Even more significantly, a further 41% of consumers will never return to a brand
or a business post-breach, representing a significant loss of revenue, offering
a stark warning to consumer-facing businesses.
The findings from the research commissioned by the payment security specialist
suggest that the combination of high-profile recent breaches, headlines devoted
to new data privacy regulations such as the GDPR, and personal experience have
put security concerns at the forefront for UK consumers. Over a third (38%)
confirmed they have personally suffered the negative consequences of a data
security breach.

Webinar: How to Automate Your Security Operations Center (SOC)
No matter a company’s size or organization, having a dedicated team to
constantly monitor security operations and respond to incidents is a necessary
function. A typical security operations center (SOC) tracks a significant number
of security alerts, which they then must validate, and when required, drive a
full incident investigation. With such a large volume of alerts, SOC analysts
can easily spend a majority of their time responding to alerts and not focusing
on hunting for complex attacks and managing large incidents.
With security automation tools, SOC analysts are able to automate some of the
repetitive, time-consuming tasks, freeing them up to focus on threat hunts and
other strategic initiatives to reduce risk.

$90 Scam: Fake Heart Rate Scanner App Slipped Into Apple’s App Store
It was recently revealed that a fake heart rate scanner app had made its way
past Apple’s App Store review process and was listed in the store, where it was
apparently charging customers a whopping $90 for it. Now for the most part no
one would pay that much for an unproven app upfront, so what it did was that it
offered to read your heart rate and asked users to place their fingers on the
Touch ID sensor. From there the app would flash and dim the screen’s brightness
as if it were actually doing something, when in reality it launched a request to
make an in-app purchase for $90 and if the user’s finger had been on Touch ID
and it was the same finger used for authentication, then the purchase would have
gone through.

A new way to vet transactions could boost
online sales
In an effort to throw online retailers a life-line, credit card networks
have come together to help with EMV 3DS (commonly known as 3DS 2.0), a
protocol to authenticate CNP transactions. The protocol has been revamped
and leaves behind the authentication complexity that had been a burden in
the past. The consumer doesn’t have to do anything. They will notice a
difference on how they are authenticated: Instead of receiving a request to
insert a 4-digit pin or other type of code to confirm the purchase, they
will either not be asked anything (90% of the times) or they will be asked
to authenticate themselves with a thumb, facial scan or other biometric
scan.
The new protocol collects more information around each transaction and
merchants have the choice to share that additional information with the
issuer—to help issuers make more accurate decisions and increase approvals.
Online retailers have to connect to the 3DS API. They need to choose a
vendor to do so.
Including seamless pre-transaction security enables merchants to make better
decisions around which transactions should be sent through the 3DS path and
which ones they should route outside of the protocol. By doing so, merchants
have better control over the experience they want to offer to their
customers.

Online Fraudulent Traffic Increases 20% Leading
Up To Holidays
The ad-verification company Fraudlogix published recent data showing an increase
in fraudulent advertising traffic in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving and
the holiday shopping season.
Fraudlogix analyzed three months of global programmatic ad traffic and found
that the average percentage of fraudulent traffic jumped from 11.6% in October
to 14.2% in November. The data includes all device types.
Invalid or fraudulent traffic is generated by bots, hijacked devices, or
malware. The data comes from monitoring traffic from more than 640 million
unique users, 1.2 billion unique devices, and 12 million URLs monthly.
Fraudlogix is not the only company to identify a rise in fraudulent ad traffic.
Companies like Distil Networks
estimate that bots create about 48% of all internet traffic across all web
sites.

Take multiple metrics into consideration and validate your hypothesis with

technologies, such as non-invasive 3D Secure. Set rules that help flag
suspicious orders but don’t make them too strict. Monitor why credit cards
are declined. Use security solutions that can adapt. It comes with working
with a reliable payment provider. Apply multiple layers of security
