INFORM Consumers Act Update
Retailers: Consumers Deserve Peace of Mind When Shopping Online
INFORM Will Help Protect Consumers, Combat Organized Retail Crime
Washington,
DC - RILA Senior
Executive Vice President, Public Affairs Michael Hanson issued the following
statement as the Senate Judiciary Committee holds a hearing, “Cleaning Up Online
Marketplaces: Protecting Against Stolen, Counterfeit, and Unsafe Goods”.
“Today’s hearing will expose the exponential growth of criminals selling
counterfeit and stolen goods through online third-party marketplaces. The
anonymity afforded con artists and criminal networks has allowed dangerous
knockoffs, tampered products, and stolen goods to flourish, putting
consumers and communities at risk.
“As we will learn from the hearing witnesses today, this problem not only hurts
consumers, but it impacts businesses large and small, and has a significant
impact on the U.S. economy, as well. The INFORM Consumers Act would require
basic transparency and verification on e-commerce platforms, making it
harder for bad actors to hide behind screennames and fake business information.
Transparency is key to breaking this corrosive and illegal business model of
those peddling counterfeit and stolen goods. It’s a commonsense, bipartisan
solution that retailers large and small, and now the majority of e-commerce
platforms support.”
“We’re glad that Congress is shining a light on this issue now and are
hopeful that a solution is within reach so consumers can shop with confidence
that the items they bring into their homes are safe.”

Nearly 600 Mass Shootings So Far in 2021 - 611
in All of 2020
At least 12 people were killed and 64 injured in Halloween weekend mass
shootings across the US
Two
people were killed and at least another dozen were injured as
shots rang out a house party in Illinois where people were gathering for
Halloween. It was one of at least 11 mass shootings in the US over the
holiday weekend, including several at places where crowds had assembled.
The violence left at least 12 people dead and another 64 injured,
according to CNN reporting and an analysis of
data from Gun Violence Archive and local news and police reports. CNN
defines a mass shooting as an incident with four or more people killed or
wounded by gunfire, excluding the shooter.
The number of mass shootings in the US increased during the coronavirus
pandemic. There have been 599 mass shootings so far this year, according
to the archive. There were 611 in 2020 and 417 in 2019,
the
group said.
The increase in mass shootings during the pandemic is consistent with the
notion that the violence may be influenced by social and economic factors,
researchers have said.
Over the weekend, gunfire erupted at house parties, a boxing event and on the
streets.

Violent Crime in Chicago Set to Surpass 2020
Chicago crime numbers released: Shootings, murders up compared to October 2020
The Chicago Police Department released its October crime report Monday. In
Chicago, the violent crime is still on track to top 2020.
Through the end of October this year, compared to the same period last
shootings are up 9%, shooting victims are up 8.6% and murders are up 3%.
Carjackings are at an all time high and up more that 26% compared to last year.
Monday Chicago Police Supt David Brown also noted the positives. His officers
have seized a record number of illegal guns from the street and making
inroads in clearance rates for murder cases.
Still, the increase in shootings, murders and carjackings, especially in
previously lower crime areas, like downtown, are an issue.
“I think what works is whole of government approach,” Brown said. “We’ve seen
that in the pilot program over the summer. One of those beats had a 75%
reduction in homicides.”
Brown believes much of the rise in crime is attributed to a lack of
consequences, as younger criminals believe they won’t pay the price with time
behind bars.

Crime & Policing Dominate Today's Elections
Mayoral races stay focused on police practices, rising crime
Voters
across the U.S. will pick new city leaders Tuesday from candidates who have been
largely defined by their stances on police and crime.
Those issues came to the forefront in cities big and small after the death of
George Floyd last year led to a national reckoning on racial injustice
and law enforcement. The debate centered on questions of when and where
police are needed — or sometimes whether they’re needed at all. It also unfolded
amid an increase in homicides in the wake of the pandemic.
In some big cities, fear or a desire for a middle-ground approach elevated
candidates seen as more supportive of law enforcement or who have rejected
liberal calls to defund the police. In Minneapolis, where Floyd was killed,
the push for change could upend law enforcement practices and help decide who
leads the city.
In New York City, Democrat and former police captain Eric Adams is expected
to cruise to victory as the next mayor. Adams’ triumph in a crowded
Democratic primary contest this past summer came after he struck a nuanced
stance on policing and crime. He has not embraced calls from some
progressives to defund the police by shifting money from law enforcement to
social work and other programs aimed at addressing the root causes of crime.
In Atlanta, rising crime rates and a spate of high-profile killings have
many residents saying that they would like to balance policing and racial
justice. Former Mayor Kasim Reed is seeking to return to office as a top
contender in a crowded nonpartisan race that will likely result in a runoff.
Reed cited the crime surge as the motivation for his campaign for a third term.
He has told voters that the low crime rate during his tenure and the hundreds
of police offices he once hired make him the best choice.

Will Minneapolis 'Defund the Police'?
Police Reform Is On The Ballot Today In Minneapolis. But It’s About More Than Defunding The Police.
On
June 7, 2020, in the wake of the high-profile murder of George Floyd by
Minneapolis police, nine members of the City Council made a public statement:
The police department couldn’t just be “reformed” — public safety in the
city would have to be drastically altered. On that summer afternoon, large
white letters leaning against the stage spelled out “Defund
Police.”
The slogan can
take many forms in practice, from
reallocating part of the police budget to social services to
setting up accountability structures. Often it’s an outright misnomer,
simply a way for criminal-justice activists to express their anguish and
frustration with the repeated killings of people of color at the hands of
police.
Such is the case now in Minneapolis, where on Tuesday voters will decide the
fate of City Question 2, a municipal ballot measure that would replace the
Minneapolis Police Department with a new Department of Public Safety under the
City Council’s control. The debate leading up to the vote shows just how
much one idea can take on wildly different meanings. Just like “defund the
police,” Question 2 is more than the sum of its parts.
Question 2 is a “defund
the police” proposal that doesn’t actually defund the police. Instead,
it hopes to make police more accountable by creating a broader approach to
public safety. Except it might not do that either, depending on how other city
races pan out. In a contentious election year marked by a citywide increase in
gun violence, the proposal has become a way for citizens to express their
feelings on a whole range of issues. As Pugh put it, “It’s not what you say.
It’s what people hear.”
At its core,
Question 2 wouldn’t eliminate the police department, but the city would no
longer be required to have a formal police department or minimum police staffing
levels that have been mandated
since 1961. The question would also create a new Department of Public Safety
that could include both police and other kinds of safety officers, such as
therapists, social workers or violence interrupters. And the city’s hierarchy
would change, too. The new system would have police answering to the head of the
Department of Public Safety, who would answer to both the mayor and City
Council.

Minnesota police referendum one of the top
races today
Here are the major 2021 races to watch
Voters across the country head to the polls Tuesday to decide a series of races
that will test the national political landscape and the direction of the
Democratic Party a year into Joe Biden's presidency.
Minnesota police referendum
Voters in Minneapolis, nearly a year-and-a-half after the murder of George
Floyd, will go to the ballot box with a chance to either approve or reject a
referendum that would significantly overhaul policing in the city. The
referendum is being watched nationally as a test of the "defund the police"
movement, a controversial slogan that gained traction among progressives in
the wake of Floyd's killing and has since been used against Democrats across the
country.
If the measure passes, the city would create a Department of Public Safety,
eliminate a requirement on the number of officers the city must have and split
control of the new department between the city council and the mayor.

Leading Minnesota Democrats skip campaigning against policing question
Three oppose Mpls. ballot question but haven't campaigned against it.
More than a year after George Floyd died at the hands of Minneapolis police, the
divide over Question 2 has torn through established partisan political lines.
With polls closing Tuesday, U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith and Gov. Tim
Walz have made their opposition clear but appear to be staying away from
actively campaigning to defeat the measure.
The ballot question is a complicated one for Democratic politicians, said
Kathryn Pearson, a University of Minnesota political science professor. It's
a rare local measure that has attracted statewide and national attention.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, both
progressives who live in Minneapolis, are working to see Question 2 pass.

Carjacking Trend on the Rise Nationwide in a Slew of Cities
In Minneapolis more than 440 carjackings in Minneapolis have been reported in
2021, a 38% increase compared with last year, according to city
statistics. Similar to a slew of cities where these incidents have been on
the rise in recent months —
the crimes largely committed by juveniles.
As of Oct. 25, there were 436 carjackings in 2021. Despite the spike in
carjackings, overall robbery cases increased by just 7% and robberies of
businesses dropped by 6%.

Just 34 NYPD Cops Didn't Comply With Vaccine
Mandate
Here’s how many NYPD cops are on unpaid leave over vaccine mandate
Only a few a dozen NYPD members were placed on unpaid leave Monday after
refusing to get the COVID-19 vaccine — but thousands of unvaccinated employees
remain on the job with pending exemption requests, the city’s top cop said.
Police
Commissioner Dermot Shea said 34 cops and 40 civilian members of the force —
which account for fewer than .15 percent of NYPD employees — did not comply
with Mayor Bill de Blasio’s mandate requiring most city workers to get their
first jab by Monday.
“That’s very fluid. That could go up as the day goes on,” said Shea referring to
NYPD members forced on unpaid leave, while adding that applications for
medical or religious exemptions are still pending.
“It could also go down and people get their vaccinations,” he added at the
mayor’s daily press conference.
The NYPD’s current vaccination rate was 85 percent Monday morning, which
reflects a nearly 15-point jump from the start of last week, leaving just under
8,000 uniformed and civilian members without the jab.

LA Vax Mandate Causing Mass Cop Exodus?
Sheriff warns vaccine mandate causing ‘mass exodus’ among personnel
Los
Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva continues to rail against the county’s
vaccine mandate, warning it is causing a “mass exodus” in his department and
threatens public safety at a time when violent crime is on the rise.
“I have repeatedly stated the dangers to public safety when 20% to 30% of my
workforce is no longer available to provide service, and those dangers are
quickly becoming a reality,” Villanueva said in a statement that he posted on
social media last week. “We are experiencing an increase in unscheduled
retirements, worker compensation claims, employees quitting, and a reduction in
qualified applicants.”
As a result, he said, homicide rates in the county would continue to rise,
while response times increase and patrol services decline.
“With the pandemic waning, there is no justification for the board mandate,”
Villanueva said. “It is like putting up the storm windows after the storm has
passed.”
Under an
executive order ratified by the Board of Supervisors in August, all Los
Angeles County employees were required to register their vaccination status
by Oct. 1 on an online portal, though religious and medical exceptions are
allowed.
More than half of the Sheriff’s Department’s 16,084 employees are fully
vaccinated, according to preliminary data collected by the county. Nearly
300 are semi-vaccinated, 2,327 are not vaccinated and 1,843 are seeking
exemptions.

Amazon
is rolling back its mask requirement for fully vaccinated warehouse workers.
Starting Tuesday, fully vaccinated operations employees in the U.S. will no
longer be required to wear a face covering at work, unless mandated by state
or local law, according to a notice Amazon sent to workers Friday that was
viewed by CNBC.
“Vaccines are universally available across the U.S. and vaccination rates
continue to rise which enables the ability to return to our previous mask
policy,” the notice states.
An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the company is changing its mask policy in
warehouses. Amazon continues to evaluate all of its Covid safety measures
based on guidance from public health officials and internal medical experts, the
spokesperson added.
Amazon
in August resumed its mask mandate for all frontline employees,
regardless of their vaccination status, amid a surge in Covid-19 cases due to
the highly contagious delta variant.

Just the Beginning of Travel Chaos
Canceled Flights and Crowded Airports: Brace Yourself for Holiday Travel
Staffing shortages have already disrupted travelers’ plans, and it could
get worse with more people planning to fly between Thanksgiving and New Year’s
This
won’t be a normal holiday travel season. Travelers had best plan
accordingly.
Multiple airlines have sold more tickets this year than they can accommodate.
Normal weather disruptions or temporary hiccups have cascaded into major
meltdowns because of staffing shortages. Airlines haven’t had enough spare crews
to recover normally, so
customers end up stranded for long periods. Any bad weather or other
problems at the holidays could spell trouble for travelers.
American Airlines is the latest example of this lack of reserve capacity. High
winds in Dallas slowed American last week. And the airline says a lack of flight
attendants
led to 2,000 canceled flights over the weekend and into Monday. More than
half of the cancellations came on Sunday, when American scrubbed about 20% of
its schedule.
This now-familiar pandemic travel pattern began with the summer travel surge
that brought
widespread delays and cancellations at American, Spirit and Southwest.
All struggled at times to handle crowds while still rebuilding their own
staffing. Contractors that provide fuel, wheelchair service, cleaning and
other necessities also saw worker shortages.

Luring Workers Back to the Office
Businesses Lease Trophy Space to Stoke Return to the Office
Businesses
trying to wean employees off remote work and
lure them back to the office are spending more than ever on upscale

These
new office digs offer custom-built lounges, game rooms with ping-pong tables

apps that enable employees to contact building security or order a burger
from the company cafeteria. The state-of-the art office towers also emphasize
sanitation, outdoor space and sustainability, featuring robust ventilation
systems and outside dining areas with fire pits.
Many firms are swallowing hard while paying the steeper rents that accompany all
these extras. But they believe the costs are necessary to
draw employees back into offices and to help recruit and retain talent
in a tight labor market.

Prosegur Security to Begin Offering Free EAS Systems Supported by Advertising
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (November 02, 2021) –
Prosegur Security, a
global leader in security technology, has launched EVO, the world’s first EAS
system with an integrated ad platform that can pay for itself through
advertising revenue. The EVO system features monitors that play
retailer-approved ads at store entrances, managed remotely by Prosegur and its
technology partner Ineo.
“Silicon Valley and even major online retailers have created major revenue
generation platforms through advertising. EAS is strategically placed in one of
the most important locations inside the physical store where consumers can be
influenced to buy more,” said
Tony
D’Onofrio, CEO of Prosegur’s global retail business unit. “It is time for
EAS to evolve into a powerful AI cloud-supported advertising platform with
increased security and operational features. The EVO system’s large monitors can
play a welcome message, information on mask-wearing and social distancing,
store’s current specials and more. Best of all, brands are willing to pay to
have their ads appear on the screens too, offsetting or completely paying for
the cost of the system itself.”
The EVO system is built on a patented EAS media integration platform developed
by Prosegur’s partner INEO, which allows for automated and remote management of
ads across the entire store chain. Ads can be regionally-targeted, or even made
unique for one specific location.
“We are excited to partner with Prosegur, a global security leader, on the
launch of the EVO system,” said
Kyle Hall,
CEO of Ineo. “EVO comes packed with the best-in-class loss prevention features,
including a built-in camera which captures a 15-second video of any alarm event,
and can send notifications by email or text. Most importantly, EVO comes with
built-in store analytics supported by AI, which can provide store traffic count
as well as certain demographics info, such as gender, age, and even customer
satisfaction rating. All the data is easily accessible to the retailer through a
cloud-based dashboard, which can be customized.”
More information about Prosegur’s new EVO system can be obtained at the
company’s website where retailers can also register their interest to join
the free system rollout program. |

Cybersecurity Spending Hangs in the Political
Balance
Cybersecurity funding is at stake in Democrats' spending battles
The largest-ever investment in the nation's cybersecurity is hanging in
the balance as Democrats continue to spar over two mammoth spending bills.
The
bipartisan infrastructure bill and the Democrats’ $1.75 trillion social spending
deal together would commit about $2.5 billion to cybersecurity.
Provisions would boost federal government cyber operations and raise
protections against ransomware and other cyberattacks for state and local
governments and critical infrastructure, such as the energy grid.
The spending would effectively reverse course on a decade of inadequate cyber
spending that’s been out of step with the surging threats to government and
industry. But that investment is in limbo as moderate and progressive
Democrats tangle over the size of the spending package.
“We have significantly underinvested in cybersecurity for decades at this
point, and this would be the first time in a long time that we’re really upping
our investment and perhaps meeting the need in some areas,” Ari Schwartz, a
former top White House cyber official during the Obama administration, told me.
What if one or both bills fail to make it into law? “We’d just continue to do
this in an underfunded way,” Schwartz said. “That just means the investment
we’d have to make in the future is going to have to be bigger. You wouldn’t get
the benefit of having the right people in the workforce and the right tools in
place.”
U.S. intelligence officials have for years treated the danger from cyber
threats as at least on a par with threats from foreign terrorism. But
Washington has never invested in protecting the nation's critical infrastructure
against cyberattacks in the way it surged funding to terrorism protections after
9/11.

Ransomware Remains the 'Prime Threat'
Cybersecurity threat landscape growing in sophistication, complexity and impact
The 9th edition of the ENISA Threat Landscape (ETL) report released by the
European Union Agency for Cybersecurity highlights the surge in
cybercriminality motivated by monetization using ransomware or cryptojacking.
It covers a period of reporting starting from April 2020 up to July 2021.
Cybersecurity
threats are on the rise.
Ransomware ranks as a prime threat for the reporting period. For each of
the identified threats, attack techniques, notable incidents and trends are
identified alongside recommendations. The report also features a list of trends
concerning threat actors.
EU Agency for Cybersecurity Executive Director, Juhan Lepassaar stated that
“Given the prominence of ransomware, having the right threat intelligence at
hand will help the whole cybersecurity community to develop the techniques
needed to best prevent and respond to such type of attacks. Such an approach
can only rally around the necessity now emphasized by the European Council
conclusions to reinforce the fight against cybercrime and ransomware more
specifically.”
The cybersecurity threat landscape is growing in terms of sophistication of
attacks, complexity and impact. Such a trend is spurred by an ever-growing
online presence, the transitioning of traditional infrastructures to online
solutions, advanced interconnectivity and the exploitation of new features of
emerging technologies.
Without surprise, supply-chains attacks rank highly among prime threats
because of the significant potential they have in inducing catastrophic
cascading effects. The risk is such that ENISA recently produced a dedicated
threat landscape report for this specific category of threat.

Chinese Hackers Go on Rampage
Hackers Breach iOS 15, Windows 10, Google Chrome During Massive
Cyber Security Onslaught
During the weekend of 16-17 October, Chinese hackers went on something of a
rampage that saw all but three of the 15 target products breached during
the exploit onslaught that was the
Tianfu Cup.
As well as the attacks on Apple iOS and Safari, there were a whole host
of other victims. These included Microsoft, which saw five successful
exploits involving the Windows 10 operating system, one impacting Microsoft
Exchange, and Google, which saw Chrome succumb twice. But the list is far
from over: Adobe PDF, the Asus AX56U router, Docker CE, Parallels VM, QEMA
VM, Ubuntu 20, VMware ESXi and Workstation were also successfully hacked.
Full details of the vulnerabilities exploited and the exploits themselves will
filter into the public domain in the coming months. Meanwhile, full
disclosure of the security flaws would have been immediately made to all the
affected vendors.
The security industry hacking competition debate
There are, of course, lots of positives about a hacking competition, such as the
Tianfu Cup or Pwn2Own. "The security researchers involved in these schemes can
be an addition to existing security teams and provide additional eyes on an
organisation's products," George Papamargaritis, the managed security service
director at Obrela Security Industries, says, "meaning bugs will be unearthed
and disclosed before cybercriminals get a chance to discover them and exploit
them maliciously." Indeed, in terms of event style, Kristina Balaam, a
senior security intelligence engineer at Lookout says, there's not much
difference between the two. "Both give hackers relative free rein over the
products they're attempting to exploit," Balaam told me.

Supply Chain Crunch & Pandemic Impact Online
Shopping
Nearly 20% of consumers plan to shift holiday spending online: Coresight
As
the holidays draw closer,
more than a third of U.S. shoppers said they are worried their online order
won't arrive on time,
according to a new
Coresight Research survey. But despite that concern, 78.2% of shoppers
expect to buy gifts online this holiday season.
Almost two-thirds
(65.1%) of U.S. holiday shoppers plan to purchase their gifts from physical
stores
this holiday season. Among various income brackets, consumers earning between
$100,000 and $125,000 are driving brick-and-mortar shopping, with 74% of those
shoppers planning to buy gifts in store this year. That's followed by shoppers
earning $50,000 to $74,999, with 69.6% of them planning to make in-store
purchases.
Nearly
20% of consumers plan to shift some or all of their spending this year from
stores to online,
compared to 11.6% who plan to shift from e-commerce to physical retail.
A
report from Deloitte also found that
amid a supply chain crunch,
75% of shoppers are worried about products running out this holiday season,
which drove them to buy their holiday goods earlier this year.
But as a result of
shipping delays affecting the industry,
stores will also be a key channel this year. The report aligns with other
research indicating that consumers are willing to return to in-store shopping
this year and the next few years.
The
NPD Group released a report earlier this month showing that
58% of survey respondents plan to shop in stores thanks to the wide availability
of COVID-19 vaccines.
Another
report from Forrester found estimates that 72% of retail sales will occur
in-stores through 2024.

and drivers that “100% of tips are passed on to your courier.” But as
the FTC alleged in its
complaint, from late 2016 through August 2019, Amazon illegally pocketed a
substantial percentage of tips that customers expressly earmarked for drivers.
The FTC just sent 139,507 checks totaling $59,428,878 and 1,621 PayPal payments
totaling $171,715 to Amazon Flex drivers. Drivers who had $5 or more illegally
taken by Amazon will get 100% of their tips returned to them. The highest award
amount is $28,255 with an average of $422.
Do you or your employees have friends or family who have been Amazon Flex
drivers? Tell them to visit

Largest seizure ever of stolen mail in TX
Northern District history
Postal Contractors Charged Following Seizure of 8,000+ Pieces of Mail Worth $4
Million
Joe Roy Rivas, III, 22, and Jessica Lynn Solomon, 35, two contractors of
Lubbock, were indicted on Oct. 13 on one count of conspiracy to possess stolen
mail and eight counts of possession of stolen mail. Ms. Solomon was arrested in
Slaton, Texas the following day and made her initial appearance in federal court
on Oct. 15; Mr. Rivas was arrested in Slaton on Oct. 27 and made his initial
appearance in federal court yesterday afternoon.
According to the indictment, Mr. Rivas and Ms. Solomon were former co-workers at
Cargo Force, Inc., a company that contracts with the United States Postal
Service to load mail into and out of air containers destined for flights to and
from the Lubbock International Airport.
During their shifts, the defendants allegedly sifted through mail looking for
items containing cash, gift cards, checks, and money orders. They allegedly
stole that mail and stashed it in 55-gallon trash bags at their residences.
Among the checks they stole were a $25,728 check made payable to a telecom
co-op, a $15,000 check to a consulting group, and a $241,1863 check to a
facilities management and food services company.
If convicted on all counts, they face up to 45 years in prison.

Final guilty pleas expose multi-state identity fraud ring
BRUNSWICK, GA: The last of four defendants has admitted guilt in an
elaborate multi-state scheme to use stolen information to create fake identity
cards for fraudulently purchasing cell phones.
Kenson Hunte, 36, of Canton, Ga., pled guilty to Possession with Intent
to Use Five or More False Identification Documents in a case from the Southern
District of Georgia, and to Aggravated Identify Theft in a related case from the
Northern District of Alabama, said David H. Estes, Acting U.S. Attorney for the
Southern District of Georgia. Hunte faces a statutory penalty of up to five
years in prison and up to $250,000 fines in the Georgia case, and a minimum of
two years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines in the Alabama case, all
followed by a period of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal
system.
Three codefendants also have admitted to participating in the scheme,
with Sheryl Henderson, 39, of Norcross, Ga.; Colby Hart, 27, of
Vidalia, Ga.; and Monique Laing, 23, of Atlanta, all pleading guilty to
Possession with Intent to Use Five or More False Identification Documents.
Henderson awaits sentencing, while Laing is serving 16 months in federal
prison and Hart is on supervised release after being sentenced to time
served. Hunte’s sentencing date has not yet been set.
The conspirator received employee commissions from the retailer and kickbacks
from Hunte, while Hunte profited from the black market sale of the fraudulently
obtained phones. The total loss amount from the conspiracy is $104,347.16.

Palm Springs, CA: Brazen Theft Halted By Home Depot Shopper
The
Home Depot in Palm Springs was the latest target of brazen theft, the thief
trying to escape with power tools, but this time he did not get away with the
merchandise as a shopper stepped in and took matters into his own hands. We’re
told by a viewer that sent video into the NBC Palm Springs newsroom, that
multiple people tried to stop the thief and it was ultimately the older man in
the video that stopped the thief from leaving the store with merchandise.
Shoppers reacted to the video Monday morning, supporting the man who stopped the
theft, but also saying it could have been a worse outcome. “You don’t even
think, you just react to the moment, but if you take a chance, even a second to
think about it, you know the person could have a gun or a knife and it could end
up being a lot worse than just stopping a robber,” explained Sergio Suhett,
Cathedral City Resident.
Palm Springs Police advise the public that the best thing to do is to step back
and take note of what is going on. “We certainly encourage people to just be a
good observer, to watch what’s going on, try to get a description as you can,”
said Sergeant Michael Casavan with the Palm Springs Police Department.
Police confirmed that this incident was not initially reported, but authorities
were contacted to retrieve some of the suspect’s property. “We certainly
encourage you not to get involved with the retailer and whatever might be
occurring, if they’re losing property, certainly your safety is more important
than losing some property at a commercial retailer,” added Casavan. The Home
Depot responding to our request for comment issuing this statement: “Organized
retail crime is a growing problem for all retailers. Thieves are often brazen
and sometimes violent, and we don’t encourage people to engage with them.”

Asheville, NC: 3 women arrested after theft of more than $1,600 in merchandise
from Walmart
Three women were arrested Monday after they were accused of taking more than
$1,600 worth of merchandise from an Asheville Walmart and at least one other
store. Asheville police said officers received a call about 11 p.m. Sunday, Oct.
31, from loss prevention at Walmart on Airport Road saying suspects had just
left the store with stolen merchandise. Officers located a vehicle matching the
description of the one the suspects had left in and arrested Sareese Jewelle
Jones, Elisha Dequan Harrison and Kimberly Nicole Hardaway. Inside the vehicle,
officers recovered $1,629.19 worth of stolen merchandise from Walmart, as well
as additional merchandise that still had security tags, possibly from Target.

Canton, MA: 25 missing packages at local UPS stores; one employee linked to
‘multiple incidents’
After
getting a tip from a Boston 25 News employee who lost a rare Mac Jones trading
card after bringing it for shipping to a Canton UPS store, 25 Investigates began
reviewing police reports mentioning the store, which were obtained through
public records request. A pattern of complaints soon emerged and one man’s name
kept coming up – 25-year-old Seth Silbert from Easton. Among the items mentioned
in the police reports was a Sony PlayStation, which the owner had sold on eBay
to a customer in Arizona for $750.
Silbert is the son of the man who owns the Canton store and two other UPS stores
in Massachusetts. He’s been working for his father since he was a teen. Sources
tell 25 Investigates Silbert hasn’t been seen at any of his father’s stores
since September. He’s charged with one count of larceny for the Playstation
theft. The only other theft-related charge we could find involves the Norwood
Police iPhones but that charge was dismissed in court. 25 Investigates reached
out to Silbert’s father, the owner of the stores, for comment. By email, he
directed us to speak with the UPS store corporate office.
According to the police reporters we reviewed, UPS security has been aware of
Silbert’s alleged connection to missing valuable since 2017. So we asked them
why more wasn’t done. They didn’t respond to our question directly, but in a
statement a spokesperson said: “The trust of our customers is a top priority
and we take these allegations seriously. As the situation is ongoing, we
continue cooperating with authorities. If these allegations are proven to be
true, it is a breach of trust and we intend to take swift and strong action, as
appropriate, to make it right.”

women when she confronted them for stealing from the store. The women then left
the store and got into a silver Acura occupied by a man and a teen boy. The
driver of the Acura attempted to hit the employee with the car, police said,
before hitting a parked car and fleeing the scene.

Austin, TX: Man convicted of killing Police Officer at Walmart found dead in
cell
A
33-year-old man sentenced to death in the 2012 fatal shooting of an Austin
police officer at a Wal-Mart has been found dead in his cell, officials said.
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice said authorities are investigating the
death of Brandon Daniel, who was found dead Saturday. Officials say foul play
doesn’t appear to be the cause.
Daniel, a former software engineer, was convicted of capital murder in 2014 in
the fatal shooting two years earlier of Officer Jaime Padron during a
disturbance and shoplifting call. Padron had been responding to complaints from
store employees about a shoplifter who was possibly intoxicated.
TDCJ spokesman Robert Hurst said that at 4:25 a.m. Saturday, a correctional
officer at the Polunsky Unit in Livingston was doing security rounds when he
found Daniel unresponsive on his bunk. He said officers who entered the cell
found that Daniel wasn’t breathing. Hurst said medics arrived at the bunk a
short time later, but Daniel was pronounced dead at 5:10 a.m.

Washington County, PA: Prosecutor to seek death penalty in Pennsylvania
convenience store slaying
A western Pennsylvania prosecutor will seek the death penalty for two men
charged with the murder of a convenience store employee who was was shot and
killed while making a sandwich. Sidney McLean, 32, of McKeesport, and Devell
Christian, 32, of White Oak were arraigned Friday in Washington County court on
homicide and other charges for the February slaying of Nicholas Tarpley in Anna
Lee’s Convenience Store in Donora. Washington County Prosecutor Jason Walsh will
seek capital punishment against both if they are convicted of Tarpley’s murder,
according to the Observer Reporter.
Two masked men walked into the store and fired six shots into the back of
28-year-old Tarpley, who co-owed the establishment, while he was turned around
making a sandwich for a customer, cops said. He died at the scene. A teenager
and another customer were present at the time of the shooting, cops said. Walsh
noted the danger the men put the other customers in as reason for seeking the
death penalty. No motive for the killing has been determined, however Walsh has
said that the suspects may have been targeting someone else, the newspaper
reported.

West Memphis clerk lucky to be alive after being shot 7 times during robbery
Update: Damien Morris turned himself in to Minneapolis Police in Minnesota.
He will be extradited back to West Memphis to face his charges. Police are
searching for a man who shot and robbed a store clerk just moments after making
a purchase last month. West Memphis Police Department is on the hunt for the
person who held up the Flash Market on North Service Road. Detective Mose Walker
said the robbery happened back on October 20th just before 4:00 a.m.
Surveillance cameras captured images of the suspect, Damien Morris, the moment
he walked through the door. Walker said Morris made a purchase but just as he
was about to leave, he did the unthinkable. “He turned around, turned towards
her and fired, then went into the register. He never mentioned anything about
money or it being a robbery,” Walker said. Detectives said Morris shot the
22-year-old clerk, LeToya Clark, seven times and walked out. “The victim was
able to notify law enforcement as well as some family members,” Walker said.
Paramedics got Clark to the hospital just in time. Walker said it was only her
second week on the job.

Buffalo, NY: Robbery at Tonawanda 7-Eleven is latest in string of convenience
store robberies
Town
of Tonawanda Police are investigating an armed robbery at the 7-Eleven near
Lincoln Park over the weekend. It happened a short distance from another
7-Eleven hold-up, and is the latest in a rash of store robberies at local
convenience stores. Convenience stores are frequent targets for criminals
looking for a quick score in cash, and authorities say it is often to feed a
drug habit. That is ironic because convenience stores are generally
well-equipped with security cameras to help police catch the suspects. Town of
Tonawanda Police say the latest holdup happened Sunday night. The suspect pulled
a gun and made off with about $50 cash. Just a week earlier, a 7-Eleven on
Brighton Road was targeted by a man who made off with an unknown quantity of
cigarettes, without showing a weapon. Deputy Buffalo Police Commissioner Joe
Gramaglia told us these crimes are usually about a quick fix. Studies have
shown that a convenience store clerk has one of the most hazardous jobs in
America’s workforce, and unfortunately there have been two holdups in our area
recently that ended in tragedy.

Clogged U.S. supply chains lead to cargo theft
As U.S. merchants grapple with clogged ports as well a shortage of truck
drivers, warehouse workers and front-line employees, the supply-chain snarls are
leading to another concern as the pandemic drags on: cargo theft. "The more that
the supply chain in general is backed up, the more cargo you're going to have
sitting. And that creates a bigger opportunity for thefts," Scott Cornell, a
crime and theft specialist at insurance giant Travelers, told CBS MoneyWatch.
This year, the prime targets of thieves are electronics amid the chip shortage
and refrigerated food, according to figures from CargoNet, a division of Verisk
Analytics, which tracks thefts along the supply chain for companies, agencies
and others. Through September, California topped the list of states with the
most reported cargo thefts, followed by Texas and Florida. On the West Coast, a
computer chip shortage means the value of some electronic goods that are
available, like game consoles, is rising, experts said. On the East Coast,
refrigerated trucks used to transport food have been a favorite target of
thieves this year.
Roughly $45 million in cargo thefts were reported through September,
according to CargoNet. That compares with almost $68 million for all of 2020
when thieves targeted toilet paper and personal protective equipment. In 2019,
before the pandemic, some $49 million in cargo theft was reported, according to
figures provided by CargoNet. The accelerated pace of theft is expected to
continue through 2022.

Interacting in large networking groups can be very challenging even for the most
seasoned of executives. The speed, the number of people, and the amount of
information shared can be overwhelming. However, the one basic principal you can
rely on is keep it simple, one person at a time and focus on that person both
mentally and visually. Slow it down in your head and make sure you communicate
clearly and sincerely regardless of the background you have with anyone or any
group. Because at the end of the day you're all part of the same industry, the
same community, and everyone has the same objective; to help develop and
represent the industry as professionals.
