Facial recognition is becoming a competitive tool in the fight against fraud
Return policies are coming back to haunt some retailers. Customers — and some people who are not customers — seem to have an insatiable appetite for bringing goods into a store and asking about credit for returned merchandise.

Some retailers are using facial recognition technology to combat returns fraud, comparing the facial image against a database of known shoplifters and fraudsters.

Merchandise returns cost retailers in the United States more than $350 billion in sales last year, including up to $22.8 billion attributed directly to fraudulent returns and abuse, estimates data analytics firm Appriss.

“Fraud is such a big number in retail, one that largely goes unchecked,” says Peter Trepp, CEO of FaceFirst, a software firm that provides a security face recognition platform for use in industries including retail, air transportation, casinos, sports and event venues. The company recently unveiled Fraud-IQ, which it calls the first facial recognition product built specifically for use against retail return fraud.

“It’s hard to find tools to combat fraud,” Trepp says. “Part of this is because criminals have become so sophisticated. We think [facial recognition] is a contribution to battle this.”

The new Fraud-IQ works in two ways to assist retailers. “First, it can identify people entering the store without a package and then showing up at the return counter with goods to return,” Trepp says, “and the second works against repeat offenders.”

This latter involves patterns, analytics and software. “It arms retailers against previous offenders,” he says.

ADDITIONAL LP USES The technology has the capability for multiple uses inside stores. “It absolutely can be of help” in combatting employee theft, Trepp says, because it can track how many times an employee leaves and re-enters the store during a work shift. It can also track how often a friend might visit an associate and buy a few things, not all of which are necessarily rung up, or how frequently friends are showing up in a store just around an employee’s quitting time. stores.org

Google employees around the world are walking out today to protest the company's handling of sexual misconduct
Hundreds of Google employees will walk out of more than 20 offices around the world to protest the company's handling of sexual misconduct in the wake of a bombshell New York Times report.

The protest is meant to send a message that the company needs more transparency around its handling of sexual harassment as well as more employee empowerment overall.

The demonstrations — set for 11:10 a.m. at each local time — come in in the wake of an explosive New York Times' report that detailed how Google shielded executives accused of sexual misconduct, either by keeping them on staff or allowing them amicable departures.

Demonstrators were seen pictured in Singapore, Tokyo, London, Berlin and Zurich in a number of Twitter posts shared by the organizers, accompanied with the hashtag #GoogleWalkout.

Previously, employee organizing has appeared to sway company business decisions. In June, Google's cloud unit said that it would not renew a controversial Pentagon contract next year following intense internal backlash.

Most recently, Google employees expressed outrage after plans leaked that it had considered a censored search app in China. A handful of employees quit in protest and hundreds of others signed a letter saying that it raised "urgent moral and ethical issues."

Other tech companies, too, have had employees protest recent projects. Representatives from Amazon, Salesforce, and Microsoft have signed petitions and held demonstrations concerning how their work is being used for surveillance or separating families at the U.S. border.

The Tech Workers Coalition, an employee activist group, says that it's seen an increase in interest and events over the last year.

It's a Make-or-Break Season For a Few
These 8 retailers can't afford a disappointing 2018 holiday shopping season
Department store chains Sears, J.C. Penney and Neiman Marcus are ailing, while strip-mall stalwarts Kmart and Bed Bath & Beyond are struggling to lure customers. And flailing mall retailers like Claire's and Charlotte Russe must deliver results.

Many major retailers are already showing signs of suffocation. Seventeen have defaulted on their debts since the start of 2017, including Sears, Payless, GNC, Rue 21, Bon-Ton Stores and David's Bridal, according to S&P Global Ratings.

Even during the financial crisis it wasn’t this bad. Only five defaulted in 2009 and five in 2010, the worst individual years until 2017. Companies that fail to pay their debts on originally promised terms qualify as defaulters and are often considered at serious risk of bankruptcy — if they’re not already there.

Flourishing apparel retailers like T.J. Maxx and Marshalls — part of parent company TJX Companies — as well as adaptable specialty chains like Best Buy are proving that retailers can succeed when they cater to their customers.

But they are the exception to the rule in the retail business, as many others are grasping for traction, especially retailers that rely heavily on mall foot traffic. Vacancy rates at regional and super-regional malls hit 8.6 percent in the second quarter, marking a six-year high.

London's Met Police to Launch Branded Clothing Line
Cashing In On NYPD-inspired Merchandise Range
London's cash-strapped Metropolitan Police Service is to launch a range of branded clothing and souvenirs in a bid to boost its funds.

Seeking to emulate the popularity of merchandise bearing the NYPD logo, the Met hopes the plan will help ease the burden of recent budget cuts on frontline policing.

The force, which serves more than eight million people across 620 square miles in the UK capital, has enlisted the branding company The Point.1888, whose former clients have included the country's prestigious Tate art galleries, its Olympic contingent -- Team GB -- and the healthy-fast-food chain Leon. cnn.com

A Call for the Thin Purple Line - "Thin Line" - Colors By Discipline
One of the most common and recognizable symbols for law enforcement support is the "Thin Blue Line."

The "Thin Blue Line" American flag represents law enforcement and is flown to show support for the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect America and its citizens.

The "Thin Red Line" is used by the firefighting community to show support for firefighters as well as to memorialize firefighters who are killed in the line of duty. The "Thin White Line" represents Emergency Medical Services and the "Thin Gold Line" represents Communications Operators (dispatchers). The "Thin Green Line" represents Federal Agents such as Border Patrol, Park Rangers, Game Wardens and Conservation Personnel whereas the "Thin Silver Line" represents Corrections Officers.

"Security personnel in the public and private sectors form an essential part of the protective apparatus of most nations. Globally, there are an estimated 20 million private security workers. In the United States, the U.S. Department of Labor statistics states there are more than 1.1 million private security guards in the U.S. compared to 666,000 police officers.

But how is the security profession, both public and private, symbolized? At present, security professionals don't have their own "Thin Line" color. That may be changing.

The ASIS Law Enforcement Liaison Council (LELC) voted on July 11, 2018, unanimously to recommend the color purple (Velvet Purple [Pantone 2612]) be adopted as the official "Thin Line" color for the security profession. It's three weeks to Black Friday, and retailers have a problem
Desperate for labor, retailers offer workers more hours
One solution: Offer workers more hours, which can make them eligible for health benefits and other accoutrements of full-time work.

"These candidates are demanding 40 hours a week, and they can," says Erika Mendez, senior vice president of a staffing firm called Pyramid Consulting Group. "A lot of the power is in their hands, and the employer has to bend to that power."

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in September that the average workweek for retail jobs has rebounded to 31 hours, up from a low of 29.4 hours in early 2014.

According to an analysis by the career website Indeed.com, jobs in retail experienced the largest decline in the share of all jobs posted that are part-time since 2016 — by nearly 40% in some positions.

"It is my understanding that in order to attract people, we are giving them additional hours," says Jack Kleinhenz, chief economist at the National Retail Federation. cnn.com

Will Albertsons have robots filling online grocery orders in its stores?
First National Grocer to Implement AI-Driven Micro-Fulfillment
Albertsons announced earlier this week that it is engaging in a pilot to test a micro-fulfillment center that makes use of artificial intelligence and robotics to fill online grocery orders at the store level.

The system that Albertsons has chosen for the test creates a designated area within an existing store location, typically somewhere between 6,000 and 10,000-square-feet, where the most popular items ordered online are stored. When an order is received , the system uses totes and conveyors to deliver the selected items to an Albertsons’ associate, who will prepare the order for delivery. The vendor behind the system, Takeoff Technology, claims it greatly reduces the time it typically takes stores to fill individual customer orders. globenewswire.com

Employers Can Be Liable for Distracted Driving
It's easy to imagine: A manager takes a business call while driving to work, a driver browses social media while delivering packages, or a salesperson who's stuck in traffic sends a text to a client. So what happens when distracted drivers cause accidents while they're working? Employers could be on the hook for damages.

About 100 people die in car accidents every day, and distracted driving is a leading cause of fatal crashes, 40% of all workplace fatalities in 2016 involved transportation incidents. Roadway accidents accounted for more than any other type of transportation incident that led to a worker's death.

If an employee is driving a work vehicle, even when off duty, the employer could be held responsible. Furthermore, an employer may be liable when an off-duty worker is driving his or her own vehicle and causes an accident while making a work-related call or sending a text.

OSHA Clarifies Safety Incentive Programs and Post-Accident Drug Testing
Action taken under a safety incentive program or post-incident drug testing policy would only violate 29 C.F.R. § 1904.35(b)(1)(iv) if the employer took the action to penalize an employee for reporting a work-related injury or illness rather than for the legitimate purpose of promoting workplace safety and health.

In addition, most instances of workplace drug testing are permissible under § 1904.35(b)(1)(iv). Examples of permissible drug testing include:

● Random drug testing.
● Drug testing unrelated to the reporting of a work-related injury or illness.
● Drug testing under a state workers’ compensation law.
● Drug testing under other federal law, such as a U.S. Department of Transportation rule.
● Drug testing to evaluate the root cause of a workplace incident that harmed or could have harmed employees. If the employer chooses to use drug testing to investigate the incident, the employer should test all employees whose conduct could have contributed to the incident, not just employees who reported injuries. osha.gov

A Conversation With Your Field Teams Worth Having?
Ahead of the Nov. 6 midterm elections, the nation is as divided as ever along partisan lines. Employers need to remind employees that they expect any political discussions at work to be civil.

Many political discussions are "extremely divisive in the workplace, reflecting our country's current polarized political climate," said Audra Jenkins, chief diversity and inclusion officer with Randstad North America, based in Atlanta.

Over half—55 percent—of 807 respondents of a Randstad survey conducted in August had witnessed heated political discussions at work, and more than a third—38 percent—had participated in them. Although 38 percent said they'd changed their opinions based on discussions with colleagues, 72 percent felt anxious when heated arguments occurred, and 44 percent said the arguments hurt their productivity.

The Loss Prevention Research Council (LPRC) conducted a series of in-person survey interviews at a Jacksonville, FL Mid-box StoreLab to understand associate, customer, and offender reactions to CIS’s IR/Magnet Convertible tag and detacher ecosystem of technologies. The trial portion of this test, along with another set of Customer, Offender, and Associate data and an additional technological focus of anti-shoplifting tethers, will be collected and released as a Part 2 Report in 2019. (Ratings scale is from 1.0 to 7.0 on all surveys)

Use pass phrases and 2FA to beef up access control
If you must rely on passwords, the key principle is that they should be created at random from a large number of possible combinations without the predictability described above. However, people are not good with randomness, so increasing entropy by using more characters is usually a better option than trying to create short random character strings which are unlikely to be remembered so may be written down.

One approach is to use three unconnected words. This, in theory, can give eight trillion combinations, but only if one cannot be guessed from another. Another is to use a passphrase. This gives a much longer password, so increasing the number of possibilities. Don’t assume common short words add much except making it easier to remember, but including uncommon place names and foreign words should help, as this increases the attackers search space.

Calculating the entropy or strength of a password is not easy, because of the human element, but generally longer is safer. Also, while there are many “password strength testers” available on the net, they give varied and often inaccurate results dependent on the algorithm used. computerweekly.com

3 Charts Show Why The Good Old Days Are Shrinking For Mainstream Retail
Unfortunately for them, things may soon get worse
American consumers are likely to spend about $2.6 trillion on what Morgan Stanley calls "core" retail products. Of that amount, about 20% will be spent online and will hit 22.4% next year. That's up from about 18% last year and just 12% in 2014.

Overall core retail will only grow 1% next year, with online sales stealing every dime of their massive growth from brick and mortars, and the pace is speeding up!

With ecommerce averaging one percentage point of market share each year in growth for about a decade. But that number doubled in 2016 and will hit 2.3 points this year and 2.4 points next year.

But the real and biggest spike came last year's fourth quarter when it jumped 4 points or 21% of core retail sales.

Morgan Stanley is expecting a similar rise this year, forecasting that online sales will account for 23.3% of core retail sales this holiday season. That could spell bad news for traditional retailers. businessinsider.com

Dispatches From The Mobile Ad Fraud Battlefield
The exact numbers are elusive. But it’s estimated that 70% of marketers’ budgets flowing into digital are now allocated to mobile. According to ad spend research from eMarketer, that’s a 34% share of total U.S. ad spend. It’s also an increasingly attractive target for fraud, where the battlegrounds constantly vanish and reappear.

“Fraudsters find the new mobile ecosystem much easier to scam with a plethora of opportunity,” says Matthew Kaskavitch, with the department of communication, University of Colorado Denver. “Ad fraud schemes still happen across all devices, but mobile is the next frontier, particularly app installs.”

One of the organizations attempting to drive this ongoing conversation is The Coalition Against Ad Fraud. Andreas Naumann, head of fraud at Adjust, a mobile technology firm headquartered in Berlin, is helping to lead the coalition. “A growing list of platform leaders has pledged to tackle mobile ad fraud head-on. We are working closely together to develop new solutions that further tackle the persistent issue of fraudulent traffic. “All members share the same objective: disincentivizing ad fraud together.”

The group’s first step was to create what it refers to as “a standardization document.” Next, opening CAAF to advertisers and third parties. “The goal,” says Naumann, “is to massively improve the transparency and measurement quality in order to give advertisers a leg up in the fight against fraud.” This fight against ad fraud takes on an accomplished army of invisible enemies. Three Arkansas women were arrested Monday on charges of burglary after allegedly stealing credit cards at Ada County recreational facilities. According to a release from the Boise Police Department, Jonte Duhart (25), Daikisha Johnson (26) and Larhonda Martin (28) are part of a “traveling fraud group” from Little Rock, Arkansas, who came to the area to steal credit cards and then buy gift cards worth thousands of dollars. The Organized Retail Crime Association of Idaho assisted in the exchanging of information between law enforcement agencies and businesses, Boise police said. idahostatesman.com

Glenview, IL: $19,000 Furniture Store heist
Someone broke into the Furniture & Bedding Outlet between 4 p.m. on Oct. 28 and 11:15 a.m. on Oct. 29. The owner discovered the back door left partially open and a large amount of furniture missing, including four Italian leather sofa sets worth about $4,800, 150 children's chairs and 50 children's tables and shelves worth $12,000, four metal filing cabinets containing paperwork and about $2,300 in cash. patch.com

Jefferson County, AL: Man robs CVS of over 1,000 Opioid pills

Tallahassee, FL: Kay’s Jewelers Manager accused of stealing nearly $3,500 through fake refunds
A Tallahassee man is accused of stealing from a Kay Jewelers store he managed. Holloway Samuels, 25, used fraudulent refund and return/exchanges to steal from the Kay Jewelers Store, according to a probable cause affidavit. wtxl.com

Waupaca, WI: Brothers busted for $1,500 shoplifting at Fleet Farm store
Police say two brothers from Burlington were caught leaving a store with nearly $1,500 in stolen merchandise. Jason R. Bennett, 32, is charged with retail theft, felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and obstructing an officer. Russell W. Bennett, 29, is charged with retail theft. According to the criminal complaint, one of the men allegedly had a drill combo, battery, circuit breaker, sheath, leather boots and hooded jacket worth $673. The other man allegedly had a pistol magazine, tool kit, marine items, LED lights, cordless drill, batteries, belt, shirt and two hats worth $810. waupacanow.com

Savannah, GA: Police looking for Lowe’s shoplifting suspect
Savannah Police are asking for the public’s help to identify a man who shoplifted from a business on Thursday, Oct. 4. Police say surveillance footage caught the suspect walking into Lowe’s on Abercorn Street around 1:30 p.m. and shoplifting items collectively valued around $400. Mesa Police said officers responded to a report of an injured person at Lindo Mercado on Monday morning. Head bowed and speaking in a clear voice, Holly Colino appeared in state Supreme Court on Monday and admitted to the August 2017 slaying of Megan Dix in a Sweden parking lot. Dix, 33, of Orleans County was sitting in her vehicle eating lunch while on break from the nearby Lowe’s home improvement store on Owens Road when Colino approached and shot her in the head. Although Colino admitted to her string of crimes before state Supreme Court Justice Charles Schiano Jr. — second-degree murder, criminal possession of weapons, threatening a woman with a gun in Henrietta and a two-hour escape from Monroe County sheriff’s deputies — she pleaded "not responsible by reason of mental disease or defect." democratandchronicle.com

A grand jury decided there's not enough evidence to indict a man accused of threatening to carry out a shooting inside Tri-County Mall. Jaime Bernard-Santiago is out of jail after charges of aggravated menacing and inducing panic were dropped. He is a former employee of Forever 21 at the mall. Lawrenceville, GA: The Home Depot Shoplifter Who Attempted to Shoot At Shoppers Arrested
Antonio McClure, 37, of Decatur, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and felony shoplifting. McClure was taken into custody without incident. On Sept. 5, McClure entered a business, loaded over $1,800 worth of equipment and fled to the parking lot. During the course of fleeing, other shoppers attempted to stop him but he pulled out a handgun and threatened to shoot them. He fled to a waiting vehicle and began to load the stolen merchandise. Additional bystanders attempted to intervene but the shoplifter tried to shoot them but his gun did not fire. Police said a second person, helping in shoplifter, was waiting in the vehicle. The shoplifter assaulted a shopper with his handgun, loaded the stolen merchandise into the vehicle, and fled. patch.com

When Augustine Gutierrez tried to rob a downtown 7-Eleven in early September, the clerk refused to open the register, according to San Antonio police. "It's not happening," the clerk said, according to court records. "If you want, you can reach over here and take the register." Gutierrez, who police said was armed with a handgun at the time, was apparently stunned. "You have balls," he said before shaking the man's hand and leaving the store. Now, a few months later, Gutierrez has been charged in the aggravated robbery. Springfield, MO: Authorities believe Romanian nationals tied to card skimmers found on ATMs
Court documents say multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating illegal card skimmers on ATMs in the Springfield area and believe the culprits could be tied to Romania. Loredana Baceanu, 30, was arrested in Nixa on Tuesday, Oct. 23 with 49 debit and gift cards in a hidden pocket of an undergarment and $880 in cash in her bra. Baceanu allegedly told officers she was a Romanian citizen who had entered the United States through the southern border. Before coming to America, Baceanu was part of a Romanian gang that committed a string of burglaries in Wales. news-leader.com

Raleigh, NC: Man sentenced to 14 years for series of Armed Robberies and carjacking; CVS and Walgreens
A Federal Judge this week sentenced a James Daniel Bloodworth, 60, of Raleigh to more than 14 years in prison for a series of armed robberies and also a carjacking. On June 14, 2017, Bloodworth was armed with a handgun when he walked into a CVS in Raleigh, approached an employee behind the counter and demanded cash. He threatened to shoot the employee if she did not comply, and he left with $200. The next day Bloodworth walked into a Walgreens in Cary and asked an employee for a pack of cigarettes. When the employee reached the cash register, Bloodworth retrieved a gun, pointed it at the employee and took cigarettes and $400 from the cash register, prosecutors say.

Police also charged Bloodworth with robbing at least three Raleigh businesses on June 12, 2017. The crime spree ended on June 16, 2017, when Bloodworth walked up to a woman getting out of her car in downtown Raleigh. Prosecutors say Bloodworth pressed a handgun to the woman’s back, threatened to kill her if she screamed and ordered her to drop her car keys before he drove off in her car. newsobserver.com

Bakersfield, CA: Former football player accepts plea in Apple Store robbery case
Over several months, Bakersfield police have investigated several theft from the Apple Store in the Valley Plaza Mall, and now a local football player may be responsible for one of them. According to police reports, former Bakersfield College football player Charles Ray Mitchell entered the store and grabbed a 2018 MacBook Pro laptop. Before fleeing the store, Mitchell allegedly punched a security guard in the face and fled. Store employees reported on a separate occasion, Mitchell took over $5,000 worth of iPhones. Bakersfield police said surveillance video captured Mitchell on that offense. kget.com

Kankakee, IL: Three Purse Thieves Not Charged with Robbery in parking lot incident at Kroger
Three Chicago women arrested for allegedly taking the purse of a woman in the parking lot of Kroger store in Bourbonnais Oct. 26 were released. Judge Clark Erickson found no probable cause to charge the women during a bond hearing Saturday. Prior to setting a bond, a judge asks prosecutors for an offer of proof and information from police reports. Not all reports had been finalized or submitted when assistant prosecutor Sarah Congdon presented the three cases on Saturday. Prosecutors constitutionally have 48 hours to seek charges before a suspect has to be released. State’s Attorney Jim Rowe said the charges were not dropped or dismissed. He said his office “will pursue them through a grand jury indictment, which is the plan.” The grand jury is set to meet Thursday and again Nov. 15. daily-journal.com
