From $4.35-an-hour Security Guard to the C-Suite:
Getting to Know Lowe’s New CEO Marvin Ellison
Marvin
Ellison’s first job in retail was as a part-time security officer at a Target
store in Memphis when he was a junior in college. Ellison, the middle of
seven kids, grew up in in Brownsville, Tenn., a small town about 60 miles
northeast of Memphis. Ellison’s father often worked several jobs to make ends
meet, so he didn’t want to burden his parents by asking for money.
Ellison, who
took the helm at the world’s second-largest home improvement retailer this
summer, made $4.35 an hour, enough to help pay for books and other expenses at
Memphis State University.
Ellison’s foray into retail wasn’t exactly intentional. But Ellison describes
that job as “the best thing that ever happened to me.” That’s not only because
it would lead to another 15 years with Target, but more importantly, Ellison
says, his time as a rank-and-file employee helped shape how he operates now as
the CEO of Lowe’s.

Why Senior Management is the Biggest Threat to Workplace Security New research undertaken by 247meeting has revealed senior management as being
the culprits for some of the biggest lapses in workplace security. 247meeting
surveyed 2,000 UK office-based workers and remote workers to understand their
attitude to workplace security and the impact it has already had throughout
their career. The
new report
aims to educate businesses on the biggest potential threats to security and how
to overcome this.
Some of the biggest lapses in security admitted by senior managers include

in 4 allowing other colleagues to use their conference call PINs, meaning
those colleagues can dial into their calls at any time.
Couple this with the fact that
senior managers also admit to discussing many
sensitive matters on calls such as business issues (34%), employee salaries
(31%) and internal company trading results (27%) and the potential for data
breaches is clear. Unsurprisingly a quarter of senior managers did admit to
experiencing a stranger on their conference call previously, yet this doesn’t
seem to have changed their behavior.
Strangers hacking into conference calls can be managed by employees not sharing
conference call PINS and using a safer option like a secure mobile app version
instead. While sharing conference call PINS might not seem to be very risky, it
can be the start of a major security breach and you should take every
precaution when it comes to calling clients and customers.
Other precautions you can take are making sure that you are taking all calls in
a private space and if you are out of the office you should leave important
calls about private information until you are back in a secure space.

4 Ways to Reduce the Risk of Violence in the Workplace Businesses have a duty to provide employees with a safe workplace. So they
should be prepared to handle threats of violence, particularly since workplace
homicides are on the rise.
Violent deaths in the workplace rose to 866 in 2016 from 703 in 2015,
according to the
latest
report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Five hundred of those deaths
were homicides, including 394 shootings. Only transportation incidents caused
more workplace fatalities (2,083) than did violent incidents in 2016.
Employers should create an environment where employees feel comfortable
reporting work-related and personal issues, Vance said. Then the employer can
take appropriate precautions. For example, if a worker reports that her spouse
threatened her, the employer can make sure that the receptionist or security
guard has a picture of the spouse and can call 911 if necessary.
Here are some additional tips to mitigate the risk of violence in the workplace:
1. Continuously Screen Workers - Employers should ensure that job
candidates are who they say they are, have the credentials that they purport to
have and meet the organization's risk profile in terms of previous criminal
history. "But circumstances change. That's why it's important for employers to
periodically rescreen their workforce to ensure that they identify new and
emerging threats to their organization."
2. Limit Access - Organizations should consider granting unrestricted
access to the worksite only to employees and visitors who have successfully
completed the organization's background check. Similarly, employers may want to
restrict access to the company's data network.
3. Don't Discriminate - "It's important to remember that workers with
previous criminal history should not automatically be excluded from hire."
Employers should offer such candidates a fair chance at hiring by conducting an
assessment of the individual's criminal history and how it relates to the job.
4. Monitor for Substance Abuse - A robust employee drug- and
alcohol-testing program can lower the risk of violence. Substance abuse can
alter a person's mental state and make someone more inclined to do something
impulsive, such as hurt a co-worker or steal money.

CVS Rolling Out More Time Delay Safes in Maryland & Washington D.C. to Prevent Pharmacy Robberies, Combat Opioid Epidemic Following CVS' announcement last week that it had completed a rollout of time
delay safes to all
900 pharmacies in California, CVS Pharmacy announced today that it has
completed a similar rollout for all
228 locations in Maryland and

OpenEye Announces Okta Integration with OWS
OpenEye, a leading provider of cloud managed video surveillance solutions,
announces the integration of the OpenEye Web Services platform with the Okta
Identity Cloud to help customers manage user access and permissions of their
OpenEye video surveillance system.
This integration was completed at the request of a large regional quick
service restaurant customer.
Several of OpenEye's large retail customers are also using this in their cyber
security portfolio. It is a big time saver for them to manage user permissions
across their national deployments and increase cyber security.

Okta integration allows users to log in to their OWS account using their
Okta credentials from both the Okta portal or any OpenEye Web Services portal

Sears owes billions of dollars: Who will be left holding the bag? Vendors, shareholders, & pensioners will be left 'fighting over scraps' Sears is on the hook to vendors, lenders and even customers who recently bought
Kenmore fridges or Craftsman lawn mowers. The company has close to $7 billion in
assets, according to court filings Monday. But it has $11.3 billion in
liabilities. More than 100,000 creditors are owed money by Sears. After
Sears filed for bankruptcy protection Monday, those creditors will all get in
line to fight to collect pennies in return for their investment dollars.
Unsecured vendors and service providers, shareholders, and pensioners will be
left to fight over the scraps. Companies that sold to Sears may not get paid
back in full -- or at all. Shareholders have mostly gotten wiped out already --
the stock is down 89% this year -- but they're generally last in line to claw
back their investments.
The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp., a US government pension insurer, is the
company's largest unsecured creditor. The government agency claims Sears'
pension plans are underfunded by about $1.5 billion. It has been negotiating
with Sears for years, and the insurer believes Sears will be able to pay
benefits for most of its 90,000 pensioners. The rest will be guaranteed by the
agency, so pensioners won't lose out.

latest municipality to implement Automated Secure Alarm Protocol (ASAP),
a technology designed to automate communication between alarm monitoring
central stations and public safety dispatch/911 centers.
Electronic data transmission results in the following benefits for
residents and first responders:

Less phone calls to emergency response centers. Alarm center data
is passed to public safety dispatch/911 operators electronically within
seconds and then provided to first responders upon dispatch.

Quicker processing times. Data doesn’t have to be input manually
or communicated verbally, resulting in reduced hold times, less chance of
human error, and faster responses.

Greater accuracy of information transmitted. Electronic
transmission of data reduces chances for errors.
More

Starbucks CISO Explains Security Outsourcing Model
The 62 full-time employees of the global cybersecurity team at Starbucks Corp.
can’t do everything. The international coffee giant designates many tasks to
those staffers, but also hires smaller firms to take on cybersecurity
responsibilities that augment employees’ capabilities, Chief Information
Security Officer Dave Estlick said.
The question of when to outsource security functions is key in the retail
sector, where there is a high volume of transactions and relatively small
security teams, according to research published in August by the Retail Cyber
Intelligence Sharing Center and Deloitte LLP. Companies outsource cybersecurity
work to overcome talent and budget constraints and to monitor their systems for
possible threats, according to the report. At Starbucks, a member of the
intelligence sharing center, the decision to hire a vendor rests on whether
companies can provide a service that will help protect the coffee company’s
brand, Mr. Estlick said.
In one case, Starbucks outsourced an important role that was beyond its
expertise, according to Mr. Estlick. Starbucks for four years has relied on a cybersecurity vendor to help fend off hackers who plug lists of stolen usernames
and passwords into automated tools, then use those tools on Starbucks’ website
and applications to try to access customer gift card accounts. The company hired
the firm in 2014 after breaches at other organizations resulted in
cybercriminals selling batches of usernames and passwords on the dark web, said
Mr. Estlick. Roughly 20% of those breaches included valid Starbucks credentials
because customers re-used their name and password on multiple sites, he said.
“Let’s say another site loses those accounts but those accounts also work within
Starbucks,” he said. “Where do you think the customer is going to see the
problem manifest itself first? At Starbucks, which is often a daily routine.
It’s really someone else’s issue, but it’s my brand that’s getting impacted.”
Mr. Estlick in an interview with WSJ Pro Cybersecurity explained why he assigns
some cybersecurity work to his own staff, and why he hires outside firms, which
he declined to name.

Consumers Mixed on Retailers’ Use of Facial Recognition Technology
Surprisingly, Younger Shoppers Are Less Favorable to It Than Older Shoppers
Many consumers are unaware that retailers use facial recognition technology in
retail stores to monitor shoppers and prevent shoplifting. Consumers see cameras
in retail stores and assume it is to monitor for shoplifting and theft, but many
are unaware that facial recognition technology is used so their actual identity
can be determined while they are shopping in the store.
The Brookings Institute recently released a
survey of 2,000 adults asking about their feelings relating to the use of
facial recognition technology in retail stores, airports, schools and stadiums.
Fifty percent of the respondents said they were “unfavorable” to the use of
facial recognition technology in retail stores to prevent theft and only 27
percent were favorable.
Interestingly, the results differ depending on the respondents’ gender and age,
and the region in which they live. As to retail stores using facial recognition
technology, 51 percent of women were unfavorable to its use, compared to 49
percent of men. Even more interesting, 58 percent of those aged 18-34 were
unfavorable, compared to 50 percent of those aged 35-54 and 40 percent of those
over 55.
Those living in the west were by far the ones who object to the use of facial
recognition technology in all four categories.

Strip casinos have begun deploying facial recognition technology.
And not just for security purposes.
A major casino operator on Las Vegas Boulevard has put the new technology into
operation, said Alec Massey, a director in PwC’s Connected Solutions practice,
during the Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas.
Hospitality companies, including Strip casinos, have been testing facial
recognition over the past few years and nearly gave up on the technology because
of inconsistent results, said Massey. Improvements have now made the technology
viable.
Facial
recognition technology enables security to potentially identify people, such as
criminals, by matching facial features captured on video with an existing
database of photographs.

Despite concerted efforts by many US organizations to improve security awareness
among users, a new study shows they still have a long way to go. Some 75% of
respondents today pose a moderate or severe risk to their company’s data,
according to MediaPRO's third annual State of Privacy and Security Awareness

Startups Take On Porch Pirates With Neighborhood
Networks
With consumers turning to eCommerce retailers to order all sorts of valuable
merchandise, package theft has become a pervasive problem. According to one
estimate, a sizable
30 percent of consumers have reported losing a package to a porch pirate.
To tackle this problem, retailers and security firms have taken various
approaches from in-home delivery to doorbell security cameras and pickup
lockers.
But startups are also turning to more low-tech, community-oriented ways to
reduce package theft: Vyllage is gearing up for the launch of a service that
allows consumers to have their packages delivered to their neighbors when they
are not home. The idea is it might take a village to raise a child, but it
could also take one to keep packages safe — and out of the hands of porch
pirates. Vyllage Co-founder Laura Borland told PYMNTS.com the offering is, in a
sense, a “neighborhood watch for packages.”
To use the service, consumers will open up the Borland’s app to find neighbors
within their ZIP code. Once they select a neighbor, they then pay a small fee by
credit card that varies depending on the size of the package. After that point,
they receive the full address of the neighbor who can accept their delivery.
That person, however, is not identified by name; rather, the customer sees a
name that the neighbor has chosen for the location along with a four-letter
identifying code for the location that they provide to an eCommerce merchant.
When the package is delivered to the address, the neighbor takes a picture of
the tracking label as well as a wide shot of the box to show the condition of
the package in which it was delivered. Those two pictures are then sent to
customers in a text messages to notify them that their package has, in fact,
arrived. Customers do have a 48-hour window in which they can pick up the
package.

How Much Of The Consumer’s Paycheck Goes To
Amazon?
Based on detailed analysis by the PYMNTS research group, we estimated that
Amazon now accounts for 2.1 percent of all consumer spend — some $1,320 of
the total paycheck for a household that earns roughly $63,000 a year ($62,941,
to be precise). We estimated average annual consumer spending for 2018 based on
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data from 2014 to 2017.
What’s driving that share of spend is the growing proportion Amazon has captured
in the biggest chunk of it: retail. Retail spend captures about 31 percent of a
household’s paycheck for things like food, clothing, electronics, healthcare
products and furniture.
We estimated Amazon has, today, captured 6.4 percent of the $19,556 a typical
household spends on those things — or some $1,243 annually.

Columbia, SC: Shoplifting suspects accused of
hitting Deputy in custody
A Richland County Deputy is recovering tonight after investigators say he was
hit by shoplifting suspects fleeing a crime scene. According to investigators
Saturday night they were patrolling the Village at Sandhills when they spotted a
suspicious car in front of a department store. Deputies tried to stop the car
about a half mile down the road when they say the suspects struck an off-duty
Deputy’s vehicle.

Hilo, HI: Man and two women charged with 59
offenses involving drugs and fraudulent credit cards
Last month, officials at a local bank informed Criminal Investigations Section
detectives of fraudulent credit card purchases made at various places in the
Hilo area. Video surveillance acquired from the establishments allowed Big
Island Police to identify three individuals responsible. Pohai Souza, Ryan Ikeda
and Rosenda Santiago were arrested last week for fraudulent credit card charges.

Madison, WI: Alleged shoplifter banned for life
from malls, stores
A Madison man who currently has five open court cases for shoplifting and was
arrested again on Saturday has been banned for life from area shopping malls and
stores. Jermaine Harris Sr., 45, was arrested for strong arm robbery, retail
theft and felony bail jumping on Saturday at Walmart. "He was arrested after
stealing 10 bottles of liquor worth $320. "Police also had probable cause to
arrest him for two other recent retail thefts" Police said. Harris has been
banned for life from West Towne and East Towne malls, and all Walmart, Walgreens
and Hy-Vee stores. "The suspect already has five open court cases, including two
felonies and three misdemeanors, all related to retail thefts," Police said.

St Augustine, FL: Trio stole $4,500 worth of
shoes from Adidas outlet; Nearly 40 pairs of shoes were stolen
Deputies are looking for a trio suspected of stealing nearly 40 pairs of
sneakers from the Adidas store at the St. Augustine outlet mall earlier this
month. The theft happened about 8 p.m. Oct. 6, but it wasn't reported until the
following week when store employees noticed the shoes -- valued at a combined
$4,555 -- were gone.

Houston, TX: Ross Dress For Less shoplifter
caught with over $2,000 worth of merchandise
According to the Houston Police Department, the woman, 57, entered the discount
store around 9 p.m. Monday and began shopping. She would put items into plastic
bags and take them out to her vehicle before returning to the store to repeat
the process, police said. When store employees caught on, police said they
confronted the woman, who said she would pay for the products, but instead threw
down $150 worth of merchandise, got into her vehicle and fled the scene. HPD
officers had to physically pull the woman out of her vehicle after she refused
to get out, even at gunpoint, police said. According to authorities, the woman
had over $2,000 worth of stolen merchandise in her vehicle.

Wynn had a video arraignment. Police say Wynn and Jahkil McPhail, both 20,
robbed a 7-Eleven on South Independence on Oct. 12 Amazingly, police had the
store under surveillance trying to solve a string of armed robberies. Shots were
fired as the two suspects ran from the store. The one who shot at police with a
handgun shot one round through the pants leg of an officer, but did not injure
him, according to police.

Lakeland, FL: Update: Experts breakdown Lakeland
fatal store shooting video
Lakeland police released surveillance video Monday showing a controversial
confrontation between a suspected shoplifter and a city commissioner at his
store. So far, Lakeland City Commissioner Michael Dunn, who owns the Vets Army
Navy Surplus store, has not been charged. The video shows Cristobal Lopez
allegedly shoplifting what investigators said was a hatchet. Moments later, the
video shows a confrontation between Lopez and Dunn, and Dunn ends up shooting
and killing Lopez as he tries to leave.
Dunn’s attorney said the commissioner wanted to protect himself from Lopez. But
defense attorney Anthony Rickman -- who's not connected to the case -- said he
doesn’t believe it is a self-defense case, even though the commissioner’s
attorney said Dunn feared for his life.

Cortland County, NY: Man Who Threatened Shooting
At Walmart Was Unhappy With Customer Service
The
Cortland County Sheriffs office says it responded to the Wal-Mart just before
2:00 am, where several employees reported speaking to a male on the phone who
was threatening to shoot everyone in the store. Dryden Police Department, the
Sheriffs Investigative team located and arrested 32-year-old Veasna Pederson.
Deputies now say Pederson was upset with the store’s customer service that he
received over the phone. He was ultimately arrested for Making a Terroristic
Threat, a Class “D” Felony, and Aggravated Harassment in the 2nd Degree, a Class
“A” Misdemeanor. No weapons were shown or found during the investigation.

Englewood, OH: Rite Aid Pharmacy Armed Robbery
ends with vehicle crash
Two people are in custody after a reported robbery ended with a chase and a
crash. Monday afternoon a suspect approached the pharmacy counter with a note,
saying he was armed and demanded drugs. They got away with a large bag of
prescription drugs but police later found the suspects. Crews chased them into
Trotwood, where they crashed. At least one individual was transported to Miami
Valley Hospital.

Lakewood, OH: Man fired for refusing to serve
Cleveland Police arrested for robbing same store
The man accused of robbing the Dunkin Donuts on West 117th Street in Lakewood
was arrested on Monday. Shontay Brown, 30, was charged with aggravated robbery.
“The Lakewood Police Department is to be commended for their efforts on this
investigation. The robbery happened over the weekend and by Monday, Brown was
named the suspect and now behind bars to answer for his actions," said U.S.
Marshal Pete Elliott in a news release on Monday. Brown was fired from the same
Dunkin Donuts location in July for refusing to serve a Cleveland police officer.
Brown insisted it was a misunderstanding.

Anderson, SC: Fire at Walmart prompts police
investigation, arson suspected
A small fire that forced an evacuation of an Anderson Walmart on Monday
afternoon is being investigated as a suspected arson, according to the South
Carolina Law Enforcement Division. Kathryn Richardson, a spokeswoman for the
state agency, confirmed state arson specialists are at the Walmart on State 28
Bypass and they are treating it as a criminal investigation The Walmart was
closed after the fire Monday due to damage from smoke and a sprinkler system
that helped extinguish the blaze. No one was injured when the store was
evacuated around 2:30 p.m., officials said.
