(Update) Visalia, CA: Kmart LP employee stabbed at Visalia store dies from his injuries
The Kmart employee who was stabbed in Visalia has died from his injuries Friday morning. 31-year-old Jeff Campbell passed away a day and a half after he was stabbed in the neck and chest while escorting a customer out of the store. The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Jeremy Kechloian had been acting strangely inside the store, so he was asked to leave. For unknown reasons, he stabbed Campbell, a loss prevention associate, near the store's exit. Kechloian is being held without bail and will be back in court later this month. abc30.com

What Makes Retail Workers Uniquely Vulnerable to Sexual Harassment
Inferior complaint procedures, lack of corporate oversight, and low-wages for workers mean that retail has a sexual harassment problem.

Retail has a sexual harassment problem, according to a recent analysis by the Center for American Progress. While media attention has largely focused on the prevalence of harassment in politics and media, the study demonstrates its pervasiveness across all industries, but particularly in ones with a high number of service-sector workers, says the authors of the analysis.

The analysis examined a decade’s worth of data around private sector sexual harassment charges filed through the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Of the more than 85,000 charges analyzed, 48.3 percent specify the industry in which these claims were made.

Notably, 13.44 percent of the EEOC’s sexual harassment claims were made in retail, which is the second highest percentage after the accomodation and food services industry.

What accounts for this? Experts link the high rate of sexual harassment in retail to the particular vulnerability of its workforce, its low wages, and a hazy, complicated, and sometimes ineffective complaint process following an incident. Retail workers who spoke to Racked cite the same factors when speaking of their experiences with sexual harassment.

Josie Torielli, the Assistant Director of Intervention Programs at the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault, connects the high rate of sexual harassment in the retail industry to the demographics of the industry’s workforce. She says that “from what we know about all sexual violence is that it is a crime of power and control, and that usually people who perpetrate these crimes will try to use vulnerabilities against the people that they are targeting.” racked.com

Chipotle to pay $8M to Ex-Manager
Fired after being accused of stealing $626
In 2015, Jeanette Ortiz was fired as a general manager at a Fresno, California Chipotle after working for the chain for 14 years, The Fresno Bee reports. Ortiz was accused of stealing $626 in cash from the restaurant's safe, with Chipotle superiors claiming to have viewed video footage that implicated her.

However, Ortiz's attorneys allege that Chipotle destroyed the footage after Ortiz denied stealing the cash. According to the attorneys Ortiz was maliciously fired after going on medical leave due to a job-related injury caused by carpal tunnel syndrome.

Last week, jurors ordered Chipotle to pay Ortiz $6 million for emotional distress and $1.97 million for loss of past and future wages. businessinsider.com

A Crime Problem on the Upper West Side: Shoplifting at Duane Reade
Top targets are razors, baby formula and cold medicine; the thefts have driven a 11.3% increase in the precinct’s major crime.

A surge in shoplifting at one of New York City’s most recognizable drugstore chains is driving crime in the staid streets of Manhattan’s Upper West Side—and rattling the police.

New York Police Department Capt. Timothy Malin said he has had to take officers off emergency radio calls and deploy them directly to the neighborhood’s six Duane Reade locations more than 880 times since the start of the year.

Thefts from Duane Reade account for 41% of larcenies under $1,000 this year and 32% of shoplifting grand larcenies in the 20th precinct, which covers most of the Upper West Side. Larcenies at the stores alone are up 43% this year compared with the same time last year, Capt. Malin said. The precinct has recorded no murders this year.

Overall, the shoplifting at Duane Reade has driven a 11.3% uptick in major crime in the precinct.
Another big drugstore chain, CVS, isn’t experiencing the same theft issue at its two stores in the 20th precinct. In a statement, CVS said the company doesn’t speak to specific security measures but it does use “technology to balance the need to prevent theft with ensuring the products we sell are easily accessible to customers.”

The police, Duane Reade executives and industry groups said the larcenies are part of a growing “gray market,” in which gangs steal hundreds of consumer products and send them to illicit warehouses, where the goods are inventoried, scrubbed of labels and resold either to local stores or through third-party websites. wsj.com

Century 21 guard busted after seen on video choking, beating teen caught swiping Prada shoes in Manhattan
Crime didn't pay for a Prada-loving shoplifter — or the belligerent security guard who busted him.

Both men were arrested after shoe-stealing suspect Victor Roberson was brutalized by guard Wilson Acosta on the sidewalk outside the flagship Century 21 store in lower Manhattan, police said.

"I felt as though I never should've been beaten so bad for what I stole," a repentant Roberson said after his arraignment Saturday.

A video shot by a passerby captured Roberson announcing "I can't breathe" as Acosta and two other security officers pinned the teen to the sidewalk and pummeled him. One of the guards was caught on video punching Roberson, who was left bleeding from the mouth and with a cut to his head. "I saw one of the security guards put his hands around his neck and choke him." The video showed a helpless Roberson, restrained by three men, taking blows to the face.

The arrested Acosta was quickly pulled off the job, according to a Century 21 statement issued Saturday.

The 24-year-old from the Bronx was charged with assault. His LinkedIn profile indicated Acosta started working at Century 21 in 2011, and joined the downtown store (pictured) two years ago.

A crowd soon gathered as the immobilized Roberson took the beating, prompting calls to the NYPD. Cops arrived, dispersed the crowd, and arrested both suspect and security guard. nydailynews.com

Milwaukee Black Panthers demand action from Tosa Police after incident at Mayfair Mall
One day after a controversial arrest outside Mayfair Mall the Milwaukee Black Panthers are demanding action from the Wauwatosa Police Department.

Cell phone video of the incident shows a 17-year-old being arrested by police Friday outside Mayfair Mall. At one point a Wauwatosa Police officer punches the 17-year-old in the face. Officers say they were called by Mayfair Mall security for five people causing a disturbance. Police say one of them tried to fight the officer who was attempting to detain him. They say the video shows only a small segment of the interaction between the teen and officer.

The Black Panthers say they're holding police and mall security accountable and are demanding the officer be fired and the department goes through diversity training, “It doesn't matter if that individual was causing a disturbance in the Mayfair Mall, he did not deserve to be brutally assaulted, and punched in his face and knocked down and then placed on his stomach and punched in his face again,” said King Rick. cbs58.com

MI Governor Signs Law Adding Retail Fraud - Shoplifters to Reimburse State or Local Government Expenses

McKinsey Accused of Running ‘Criminal Enterprise’
The founder of rival AlixPartners says the consulting firm hid conflicts of interest to win lucrative court appointments to represent bankrupt companies.

The founder of corporate restructuring firm AlixPartners has accused rival McKinsey & Co. of making at least $101 million in bankruptcy consulting fees by concealing potentially disqualifying conflicts of interest from the courts.

In a complaint filed on Wednesday, Jay Alix said McKinsey had conducted a “criminal enterprise” to secure lucrative consulting appointments, making it liable for violations of the federal Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. cfo.com

The analysts pointed to a slowdown in the expansion of store fleets across retail, with current growth at less than 1% as compared to a 2% to 3% expansion over the past five years. And even as retailers make fewer risky decisions about capital spending, their margins are eroding as the "lion's share of retailer growth" comes through e-commerce, which has lower margins than store sales, the analysts note.

All that leaves the more "e-commerce resilient" retailers in a better position to draw returns from their investments in stores and other spending, according to the Morgan Stanley team. Among them are the off-price sellers — namely TJX Cos., Ross Stores and Burlington Stores — which have been rapidly expanding their store fleets and posting enviable sales gains. The analysts also include in this group Home Depot, Lowe's, Costco, Ulta, Michaels and auto parts sellers.

As the Morgan Stanley team frames it, retailers have been caught in a "margin downdraft" since 2012 — during which time their earnings margins have shrunk by 230 basis points — due mainly to e-commerce competition, the rise of price transparency, shifts in their own sales from stores to online and the high cost to retailers of free shipping.

The analysts describe the retailers in this boat as "e-commerce challenged," as they are "the most at risk from the growing presence of Amazon" and falling returns on the investments they make to compete. The group, in the analysts' view, includes: Pier 1 Imports, Williams-Sonoma, Bed Bath & Beyond, Dick's Sporting Goods, Walmart, Target, Sally Beauty, Macy's, Nordstrom, Kohl's, L Brands, Chico's, Tiffany, Lululemon, Michael Kors, Urban Outfitters, Gap, Tapestry and American Eagle. retaildive.com

Toys ‘R’ Us Chief Executive David Brandon and many of his top lieutenants will exit the bankrupt chain on Monday — with the pockets of at least five of them stuffed with bonus money, The Post has learned.

The execs will walk away from the sinking ship of a chain while thousands of hourly workers finish the grim task of completing liquidation sales at hundreds of stores across the country.

The five execs in Brandon’s bunch shared $8.2 million in retention bonuses, approved by the company a week before the Sept. 19 bankruptcy.

“It’s very unusual for the C Suite to leave before the business is entirely wound down,” said bankruptcy lawyer Richard Weltman.

New Shrink Study from Tyco Retail Solutions Reveals the Products and Brands Most Likely to be Stolen from Stores
Shrink costs U.S. retailers a staggering $42.49 billion in 2015.

That's according to the 2018 "Sensormatic Global Shrink Index" from Tyco Retail Solutions, which found that the most likely to be stolen from U.S. stores included clothing, cosmetics, jewelry and confectionery, as well as consumer electronics. The brands targeted the most included Guess, Gap, Revlon, Apple (and Beats), Samsung and Sony.

U.S. fashion and accessories stores had the highest rate of shrink by retail vertical, the survey found. Office equipment stores had the lowest. Read more here

Cybersecurity salaries highest in retail sector
A recent study found cybersecurity salaries in the retail sector are among the highest in the field while those in education and telecommunication are some of the lowest.

Researchers also found it pays to keep learning either by getting advanced degrees and or by obtaining certifications. The Certified Information Systems Security Professional certification was held by 33.9 percent of respondents, CEH: Certified Ethical Hacker certification was held by 23.7 percent of respondents, and a CompTIA certification was held by 22.7 percent of respondents. scmagazine.com

Credit Card Data Stolen In Chili’s Malware Attack
The restaurant chain’s parent company Brinker International made the announcement on Saturday (May 12), just one day after discovering that malware on some locations’ payment systems may have harvested customers’ credit card information.

Once the incident was discovered, Brinker immediately activated a response plan and notified law enforcement. The company added that it’s also working with third-party forensic experts to investigate how the incident took place, as well as exactly which locations were affected by the breach.

Chili’s is the flagship brand of Dallas-based Brinker, with more than 1,600 locations in 31 countries and two territories. Brinker also owns and operates Maggiano’s Little Italy. pymnts.com

Blockchain Used To Track Gems To Counter Blood Diamonds And Fakes
Blockchain technology has been used in a pilot project to track diamonds from the mine to retail by South Africa’s De Beers Group, the world’s largest producer of diamonds.

The company has tracked 100 high-value diamonds along its entire value chain using an “immutable and secure digital trail [that] was created for a selection of rough diamonds mined by De Beers as they moved from the mine to cutter and polisher, then through to a jeweler” it said in a statement.

De Beers calls its Blockchain platform Tracr, which it says will be open to the industry when it launch later this year. The pilot was launched in January. “When fully operational, Tracr will provide consumers with confidence that registered diamonds are natural and conflict-free, improve visibility and trust within the industry, and enhance efficiencies across the diamond value chain,” it said.

“The Tracr project team has demonstrated that it can successfully track a diamond through the value chain, providing asset-traceability assurance in a way that was not possible before,” said De Beers Group CEO Bruce Cleaver. reuters.com forbes.com

APT (Advanced Persistent Threat) Attacks on Mobile Rapidly Emerging
"The phone is no longer a phone; it's an electronic device that has access to every part of our digital lives. Unfortunately, we still think of it and protect it like it's a Motorola flip-phone," says Mike Murray, vice president of security intelligence at Lookout. And that gap between what the device does and how it's protected has led to our current situation: "Mobile has become not just a target, but the primary target in the enterprise," he said.

It's becoming the point of entry for many attacks. Murray pointed to the 2018 Verizon Data Breach investigations Report, noting that phishing and smishing are examples of the social attacks that convince many users to click on malicious links or download infected software. Then a dropper installs, or the user clicks through and it installs, he said. "After that, they elevate privilege, install software, and perform espionage on the device," Murray said.

Phishing Attack Bypasses Two-Factor Authentication
Businesses and consumers around the world are encouraged to adopt two-factor authentication as a means of strengthening login security. But 2FA isn't ironclad: attackers are finding ways to circumvent the common best practice. In this case, they use social engineering.

It starts with typosquatting, a practice in which hackers create malicious URLs designed to look similar to websites people know. Mitnick starts his demo by opening a fake email from LinkedIn and points out its origin is "llnked.com" - a misspelling people will likely overlook.

Those who fall for the trick and click the email's malicious link are redirected to a login page where they enter their username, password, and eventually an authentication code sent to their mobile device. Meanwhile, the attacker can see a separate window where the victim's username, password, and a different six-digit code are displayed.

"This is not the actual 6-digit code that was intercepted, because you can't use the 6-digit code again," Mitnick says in the demo. "What we were able to do was intercept the session cookie." darkreading.com

The e-commerce boom won’t save retail jobs
While traditional retail jobs have been on the decline, the growth of the e-commerce sector offers some hope. Just look at Amazon (AMZN). The e-commerce giant, which dominates nearly half of the online sales in the U.S., has created thousands of warehouse and delivery jobs.

But that may not be enough. Recent research by The Conference Board looking at jobs data from 2005, suggests that the growth in e-commerce jobs is not sufficient to make up for jobs lost in brick and mortar.

In the past 12 years, the share of e-commerce in total retail sales has grown from 2.3% to 9.1% in 2017. During the same period, “new” retail sectors, including warehouse and delivery, have created just 749,000 jobs.

If the trend continues, meaning every 6.8% increase in e-commerce yields 749,000 new jobs, a 100% online retail sector would employ just 12.1 million workers, far from the latest job figures in May, which shows the retail sector currently employing 17.6 million people. yahoo.com

11 people were arrested in a retail theft sting at a Walmart in DeLand yesterday. Five of those people were charged with felonies and seven others were charged with misdemeanor theft. fox35orlando.com

Cypress, TX: $107k in watches stolen from Fred Meyer in less than 30 seconds
On the 11th of May 2018, at 11:41am cst, Fred Meyer Jewelers store, located inside the Fairfield Kroger Marketplace in Cypress, Texas, became the victim of a Smash and Grab. At the time of this incident, the suspects entered the location, immediately approaching the island showcase, containing 11 Rolex watches. One suspect hit the showcase with a sledgehammer three times, as a 2nd suspect assisted in removal of the watches, while a third suspect acted as lookout brandishing a firearm, and pointing it at the manager on duty. The three suspects fled from the scene in a truck that police have identified as being reported stolen. This incident occurred within 24 seconds. A total of 10 Rolex watches were removed during this incident, and damage to an 11th watch left behind. This incident resulted in a total retail value loss of $106,800.00.

Rochester, MN: More Than 40 iPhones Stolen from Target North; Could be part of larger ring
Rochester Police are searching for two men after more than 40 iPhones were stolen from Target North in Rochester. Just before 10 p.m. Saturday, an employee noticed two men who didn't work at the store leaving the storage area and stockroom meant only for employees. The witness said the men were pushing a shopping cart with a suitcase in it. A press release said they exited the store quickly with the shopping cart and suitcase. After some investigating, Target employees discovered the men entered the stockroom and used a bolt cutter to open a locked cabinet and put more than 40 iPhones into the suitcase before leaving the store. Police say it could have been a part of a larger retail theft ring that operates in Minnesota or the Midwest. kaaltv.com kimt.com

Medford, OR: Woman sentenced for stealing $7,000 in Victoria's Secret underwear
A California woman was handed a probation sentence for a string of brazen shoplifting episodes earlier this spring that included more than $7,000 worth of Victoria’s Secret underwear. But a fugitive warrant means she could stay in jail for up to a month longer. Harmonie Jewel Taylor, 25, pleaded guilty Thursday in Jackson County Circuit Court to two felony counts of first-degree theft, admitting she stole thousands of dollars’ worth of underwear from the lingerie chain at the Rogue Valley Mall, as well as more than $1,000 from Medford Safeway stores last April. Most of the merchandise was returned, according to Deputy District Attorney David Orr, who prosecuted the case. mailtribune.com

Sacramento, CA: Shoplifting Suspect Dies after Fight with Bel Air Security Guard
Local police and Raley's Grocery Store are investigating what caused the death of a shoplifting suspect at a grocery store in Carmichael. The incident happened Saturday night at the Bel Air store on Manzanita Avenue. The man died shortly after a fight with a store security officer, but when deputies arrived the suspect was able to speak for a brief time before passing out. The man told deputies he had smoked meth that morning and soon passed out. According to Hampton, officers tried to save the man using CPR. fox40.com

Detroit, MI: Gas station clerk arrested after fatal shooting of customer
Detroit police say a gas station clerk has been arrested in the fatal shooting of a customer following an argument. The shooting happened Sunday afternoon on the city's west side. A preliminary police report cited by The Detroit News says the clerk and the customer "exchanged words" and the clerk came from behind a partition before firing a handgun, striking the man in the chest. Police say the man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name wasn't immediately released. freep.com

Guerneville, CA: Man arrested after threatening to detonate pipe bombs at Safeway store
A 55-year-old Guerneville man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of stealing two rainbow flags from a flagpole in downtown Guerneville and threatening to make pipe bombs and detonate them at the Guerneville Safeway and the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office substation in Guerneville, a sheriff’s official said. The suspect’s intent was to injure sheriff’s deputies and members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community, Lt. Eddie Engram said in a statement. The rainbow flag is a symbol of the LGBTQ pride movement. pressdemocrat.com

A man was shot during a robbery in the parking lot of an Exxon gas station on Houston’s south side. Houston police said the shooting happened in the 9400 block of Cullen at Wilmington Street. The victim was taken to the hospital, but his condition is unknown. There is no word yet on any suspects. click2houston.com

Cheektowaga Police are investigating a shooting outside of Macy's at the Walden Galleria. It happened shortly before 3 p.m. on Sunday. It doesn't appear that anyone was shot, according to Cheektowaga Police. McAdams said at least eights shots were fired. The mall remains open while police investigate. wgrz.com

It was Christmas Eve 2007, and one of the city’s most ambitious, potentially lucrative heists was about to unfold. It was like something out of “Ocean’s Eleven” one detective recalled — except neither the cops nor robbers won. And it’s all been kept a secret — until now.

The target 'The Lesotho One' a 71.73 carat and $5M value. One of its sister stones — the smaller Lesotho Three — was given by Aristotle Onassis to Jacqueline Kennedy as an engagement ring.

The robbers gained access to the roof of a neighboring building and jumped from roof to roof until they were on top of Harry Winston, 55 E. Oak. About 9 p.m., the men cut a hole through a hatch on the building’s roof and attached alligator clips — metal clamps with serrated jaws — to an electrical box to bypass an alarm. At the bottom of the ladder, they punched a hole through a wall that led to a stairwell and descended to the second floor, where they made their way to a very specific spot. Below was the safe room.

The men used a drill with a bit over a foot long, a saw and a sledge hammer to break through cinder block, wire mesh, drywall and wood.

It was about 10 p.m. Then, suddenly, they bailed — most likely due to a brief message over the two-way radio from their driver: the cops are coming.

The hammering set off an upside down sensor that alerted Harry Winston's corporate office.

“There were other things, too,” Foria said. “They knew everything. Everything about the interior. They knew exactly where to go.”

No one was ever arrested and the Detective still believes it was an inside job. suntimes.com

San Diego, CA: Wal-Mart robbery suspect leads police on "wild" chase
A man accused of stealing items from a Serra Mesa Wal-Mart brandished a knife at employees before leading officers on a wild chase Sunday morning, police said. Around 5:45 a.m., employees at a Wal-Mart located in the 3300 block of Murphy Canyon Road reported a man left the store with a tote full of unpaid items. Employees say that when they confronted him, the suspect brandished a knife before taking off in a gold Suburban. Police say he fled to southbound Interstate 15 where officers began pursuing the vehicle. Shortly after exiting the freeway, the suspect drove through fences belonging to businesses along Market Street. The suspect made his way into a neighborhood near the intersection of 54th Street and Santa Margarita Street, where he was finally taken into custody. fox5sandiego.com

Lower Nazareth, PA: Man used baby stroller to steal $1,727 in electronics from Target
Bethlehem man used a baby stroller to steal televisions and other electronics from a Lower Nazareth department store, police said Sunday. Colonial Regional Police say they stopped Raul Ortiz-Ortiz on Saturday afternoon at the Target in the Lower Nazareth Commons. Police said that between April 26 and Saturday, Ortiz-Ortiz took numerous televisions and other electronics, removed their security devices and placed them in the bottom of the baby carriage. The value of the stolen items totaled $1,727, according to police. mcall.com

Charlotte, NC: Police officer charged with shoplifting
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney said Thursday that one of his officers is charged with shoplifting. CMPD Officer Samuel Yaravitz was arrested on seven counts of larceny in connection with shoplifting from a Harris Teeter on Morrison Boulevard. He has been suspended without pay. Yaravitz has been a CMPD officer since June 1999. Blair Moore is a customer of the Harris Teeter. "I think he has a problem,” Moore said. “I think it's a little deeper than being a bad cop." ajc.com

Fort Worth, TX: Police Release Images of Suspect in Molotov Cocktail Fires at Mall
Police have released photos of a man they said is responsible for setting fire to two molotov cocktails in Fort Worth's Hulen Mall. Officials said at about 2:30 p.m. Friday a man threw one lit Molotov cocktail at a clothing rack in the men's clothing department at Dillard's and then again in the men's department at Sears. The fire was put out by employees and there were no injuries reported. Arson investigators were at the scene hoping to identify the man on surveillance video. They did use that video to track the man's movements through the mall and believe they captured an image of a vehicle they believe the suspect used to leave the mall. nbcdfw.com
