More Nationwide Riots Break Out Following Police Killings
National Attention on Minneapolis & Chicago
As a trial, memorials & protests over police brutality play out
Jurors in Minneapolis are set to begin deliberating after closing
arguments today on the murder and manslaughter charges leveled against former
police Officer Derek Chauvin. Perhaps no verdict since the time of Rodney King
could have higher stakes for shaping the future of race and policing in the
nation.
At the site where police pinned Floyd to the ground, a memorial and protest zone
has been closed to street traffic and most government intervention for nearly 11
months.
In Chicago, there’s a makeshift memorial for Adam Toledo, the
13-year-old Mexican American boy who was fatally shot by a police officer after
having dropped a gun and raised his hands.
Over the weekend,
a steady stream of mourners visited the memorial. Many said the youth was a
victim of police brutality. But some also observed that he was out in the
early hours of the morning with a member of the gangs who terrorize them.

Boarded Up Businesses - Fires Set - Emergency
Curfew Ordered
Riots, protests in Minnesota, Chicago, elsewhere in reaction to police shootings
Brooklyn Center officials called an emergency curfew after initially
planning to go without a curfew for the first time in nearly a week
Crowds
poured into the streets in several U.S. cities on Friday night, reacting to the
police shooting deaths of Daunte Wright in Minnesota and Adam Toledo in Chicago.
The greatest unrest Friday appeared to be in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, the
Twin Cities suburb where Wright was fatally shot last Sunday, but events
appeared to be deteriorating in Portland, Oregon, early Saturday, with reports
of fires and possible gunfire.
Here are some details about some areas where crowds clashed with law
enforcement:
Brooklyn Center: 100 arrests
An emergency curfew was imposed by police Friday night as rioting
escalated outside police headquarters, FOX 9 of Minneapolis reported. As of
early Saturday, Public Safety Commission John Harrington estimated about 100
people had been arrested. City officials initially tried to go without a curfew
Friday for the first time since protests erupted Sunday following the police
shooting death of Daunte Wright, according to FOX 9.
But Mayor Mike Elliott’s attempt to "take a different approach" was reversed
around 10:30 p.m., with the emergency curfew put in place from 11 p.m. Friday
to 6 a.m. Saturday.
Around 9:30 p.m., rioters breached a barrier surrounding the building,
drawing a police response of flash bangs and pepper spray, the station
reported. The gathering – which also included objects hurled at police – was
declared an unlawful assembly soon after, according to FOX 9.
Chicago: Logan Square Park clash
A crowd of thousands gathered in Logan Square in reaction to this week’s
release of video footage from the March 29 police shooting of 13-year-old Adam
Toledo. Police and protesters were seen clashing at one point but the gathering
was mostly free of trouble,
FOX 32 of Chicago reported.
On Thursday, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot had called for the city to remain
calm, vowing the death of Toledo would be fully investigated.
Oakland: ‘Unlawful assembly’
Some downtown businesses boarded up early in anticipation of Friday
night’s protests, FOX 2 of the Bay Area reported. Demonstrators began gathering
around Frank Ogawa Plaza around 8 p.m., calling it "Oscar Grant Plaza" after a
22-year-old Black man who was killed by a BART transit police officer in Oakland
on Jan. 1, 2009.

Apple Store Burned & Businesses Burglarized
During Portland Riots
Portland, OR: Riot declared in Portland protests after Police kill man
Police
in Portland, Oregon, said Saturday they arrested four people after declaring a
riot Friday night when protesters smashed windows, burglarized businesses and
set multiple fires during demonstrations that started after police fatally shot
a man while responding to reports of a person with a gun. Police said they
dispersed the crowd so firefighting crews could douse fires before they spread
in extreme fire hazard conditions.
The vandalism downtown came after the police shooting earlier Friday and also
was part of vigils and demonstrations already planned for the night in the name
of people killed in police shootings nationwide. They include 13-year-old Adam
Toledo of Chicago and Daunte Wright, a Black man in a Minneapolis suburb.

Friday & Saturday Night Protests in DC
D.C. police arrest 4 after skirmish and night of demonstration
Four people were arrested Saturday night after clashes between protesters and
police in the Chinatown area of downtown Washington, authorities said.
The arrests came after a skirmish as a group of about 100 marchers were wrapping
up after a night of demonstration. The group was protesting police violence
against people of color, but it was unclear what started the clash.
The protest started at about 8:30 p.m. with a rally at Cobb Park at Second and H
streets. The protesters made speeches and chanted the names of people of color
who were killed in police-involved incidents, including George Floyd, Adam
Toledo, Daunte Wright and Karon Hylton, who collided with a van while fleeing
D.C. police on a Revel electric scooter.
Protesters then marched to Union Station, where police moved in after people
spray-painted graffiti on a Christopher Columbus statue and a flare they threw
caught fire at the base of the structure. Protesters headed toward the Chinatown
Arch and were beginning to disperse about 10:45 p.m. when police made the
arrests.
On Friday night, about 200 protesters clashed with police along the 14th Street
corridor.

Raleigh, NC: Vigil turns to street protest on third night of rallies against
police violence
Roughly 300 people gathered at Moore Square and some of them then
marched through downtown Sunday evening, calling for change during a third
consecutive night of protests in the Triangle against police violence. At least
seven arrests were made as the protesters moved through downtown streets. During
the weekend of protest, more than 100 people marched peacefully through downtown
Raleigh on Saturday evening and a similar number came together in Durham on
Friday evening. Sunday evening’s gathering started with a vigil for Daunte
Wright, with speakers also naming Adam Toledo and others killed by police.
Some in the crowd were seen overturning trash containers and spray-painting
buildings, while others burned American flags and shouted "F--- the police!"
the paper reported.

Drive-By Shooting of Two Guardsman in Minn.
Early Sunday Highlights Threat
Minneapolis becomes fortress ahead of verdict in George Floyd trial
Minneapolis
looks like a military fortress ahead of the George Floyd murder trial verdict —
with fears heightened by a
drive-by shooting targeting some of the thousands of National Guard members
trying to protect the city.
The Minnesota city had already dramatically increased security ahead of the
trial of ex-cop Derek Chauvin — ramping it up even further following
the fatal police shooting of Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center, a Minneapolis
suburb just 10 miles from where Floyd was killed.
As
jury deliberations are set to start Monday in Chauvin’s murder trial,
dramatic photos show huge chunks of the Twin Cities completely boarded up,
fenced off and swamped by armed troops and military vehicles.
The National Guard has
activated more than 3,000 troops to back up more than 1,000 law enforcement
officers already involved in the multi-agency “Operation Safety Net” protecting
the troubled area.
Guard members in fatigues are stationed across the city, in front of regular
buildings as well as the heavily fortified police and court buildings,
the Star Tribune noted. Law enforcement agencies from Ohio and Nebraska have
also been called in to bolster security.
The threat is clear, however — highlighted by a drive-by shooting early
Sunday that injured two of the thousands of National Guardsmen there.
The
fortification of government buildings was expected to cost at least $1
million — but was deemed necessary because the Minnesota region has been
repeatedly ravaged by violent protests since Floyd’s police-custody death last
May, the Star Tribune said.
The governor said law enforcement agencies from Ohio and Nebraska also have
been called to bolster security throughout the Twin Cities.
Governor Tim Walz conceded that the military presence was causing trauma for
some locals — but said it was necessary to get policy changes addressing racial
inequalities, the paper said.
“We can’t pass those things if we are in chaos and crisis and our buildings
are burning,” Walz said.
Many locals told the paper that they supported the military lockdown is it
ended the destruction of the Twin Cities.

Maxine Waters attends protest Sunday over police killing of Daunte Wright
Fiery
California Rep. Maxine Waters
joined hundreds of angry protesters who thronged Brooklyn Center, Minnesota
early Sunday, all breaking the 11 p.m. curfew together during the
seventh night of protests against the police killing of Daunte Wright.
“We’ve got to stay in the streets, and we’ve got to demand justice,” she
urged the crowd, according to one
tweeted clip.
“We’re looking for a guilty verdict” in Derek Chauvin’s trial for the police
killing of George Floyd, where
deliberations will begin next week, she said.
“And if we don’t, we cannot go away,” she added. “We’ve
got to get more confrontational.”
Asked about the curfew, she said, “I don’t know what curfew means,”
according to another tweeted clip.

Hundreds of protesters gather for peaceful rally Sunday in St. Paul
About 300 protesters gathered Sunday afternoon in front of the governor's
residence on Summit Avenue before marching about an hour through the streets of
St. Paul.
The protesters chanted, often to the beat of a drum, repeating Daunte Wright's
name and the names of other victims of police-involved shootings in Minnesota
and across the country.
As the crowd marched a few blocks on Grand Avenue, dozens of shoppers and diners
stepped out of businesses to watch and take videos of the demonstrators holding
up "Black Lives Matter" signs and shouting in unison, "No justice, no peace!
Prosecute the police!"
The group paused at a few points on Milton Street to hear from speakers and
kneel for a moment of silence and prayer. By 4 p.m., the protesters had returned
to the governor's residence on Summit Avenue and the crowd quickly dispersed.
Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott declared a citywide curfew starting at 11
p.m. Sunday and extending until 6 a.m. Monday.
Also Sunday afternoon, an Asian solidarity rally was held at George Floyd Square
in south Minneapolis featuring a long lineup of speakers and performers.

Charleston, SC., Hundreds call for justice, end to police brutality during
Sunday protests
Large
groups of protesters gathered in downtown Charleston on Sunday evening calling
for an end to law enforcement brutality and justice for those killed while in
police custody.
A spokesman for the Charleston Police Department told News 2 no permits were
given for Sunday’s protests – still, dozens gathered in Marion Square and
marched to the U.S. Custom House and near the Market with Black Lives Matter
signs and chants for an end to violence.
The protest was organized by ‘Stand As One’ – who describe themselves as a
“group of community leaders and activists dedicated to activism for equal rights
of all individuals.”
Protesters later came face-to-face with police in riot gear on King Street just
after 7:30 p.m. where they were told they were not allowed to demonstrate.
While there were some confrontations, there was no violence during Sunday’s
protests. Things remained mostly peaceful.

State & Local Officials Order 'Show of Force' For This Week
Especially after Daunte Wright Fatality
As Chauvin verdict looms, military presence in Twin Cities unsettles some,
reassures others
As
the end of the Derek Chauvin trial draws closer, state and local officials
have ordered a show of force that some say has transformed the Twin Cities
into an eerie, alarming, almost alternate-reality version of their hometowns.
Thousands of armed Guard members in fatigues are stationed on street corners
— in front of libraries, laundromats, pharmacies, restaurants, office buildings
and grocery stores. Businesses have boarded up windows, public buildings are
surrounded by razor wire and for several nights last week curfews forced Twin
Cities residents indoors after dark.
Stung by criticism of the response to riots last spring, when more than 1,000
buildings and businesses were damaged, Gov. Tim Walz, Mayor Jacob Frey and
other leaders have opted for a massive presence to maintain law and
order.
Some residents and business owners say the militarization makes them feel
more secure. Others fear it is suppressing the voices of those seeking
criminal justice reform in the wake of George Floyd's death at the hands of
Minneapolis police.
Local law enforcement and the Guard suddenly ramped up their public presence
last week after a police officer fatally shot 20-year-old Daunte Wright, who
was Black and unarmed, during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center. As protests
over Wright's death continue in the suburb, Minnesotans are expecting to learn
as early as this week whether Chauvin will be found guilty in the death of Floyd
last May.

The past year has brought historic police reforms in D.C. region, and more
could be on the way
Virginia and other states have moved to strengthen oversight of police
misconduct since the national reckoning following the videotaped death of George
Floyd under a Minneapolis police officer’s knee 11 months ago.
Both Virginia and Maryland have recently passed the most extensive police
changes in years. The Maryland legislature approved especially far-reaching
changes in its regular session that ended a week ago.
Some reforms won’t take effect until new standards are defined or oversight
bodies established. But advocates still described what was accomplished as
historic.
He said the new laws “basically blew up the old system and tried to create a
new structure for discipline.” Claire Guthrie Gastañaga, executive director
of the ACLU of Virginia, said the goal was to create an environment where police
no longer feel “invulnerable” from being disciplined.
The District approved some similar reforms in emergency legislation last year.
It could go even further if Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) and the D.C. Council
accept bold recommendations issued at the start of this month by the D.C. Police
Reform Commission.
The 20-member panel urged ending the use of police for tasks such as routine
traffic enforcement, school safety or mental health cases. Among other
things, that would allow for shrinking the size of the force. Bowser has
resisted that change and said she suspects it lacks community support.
Longtime advocates of police reform have been astonished at how quickly laws
have passed. They cite publicity over Floyd’s death and other videotaped
examples of police misbehavior, especially against African Americans.

U.S. Faces Critical Weeks as Covid-19 Cases Rise Again in Some Places
Public-health
officials say relaxed restrictions, pandemic fatigue, variants are contributing
to increasing infections, hospitalizations in parts of U.S.
The U.S. is headed into critical weeks in the Covid-19 pandemic.
States
are scrambling to reorganize vaccination efforts after pausing use of the
Johnson & Johnson vaccine while U.S. health officials investigate rare but
severe cases of blood clots.
The seven-day average number of new Covid-19 infections eclipses the 14-day
average in about half the country, with 40 states hitting that benchmark
last Wednesday.
And the age distribution of Covid-19 cases showing up in hospitals has
shifted to a younger population, as younger people, who haven’t been
vaccinated, are helping drive a rise in cases, according to health
officials.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported last week that the
seven-day average of new Covid-19 cases is up to 69,500, with nearly 70,000 new
cases a day. Four weeks ago, the seven-day average was 53,000 cases a day,
Hospitalizations are also trending higher, up almost 6% from a week earlier, but
still 70% down from a post-holidays peak, according to CDC data.
“The increasing trends in cases, hospitalizations and deaths are very
concerning, and they threaten the progress we’ve already made,” Dr. Walensky
said.
The spread of highly transmissible variants is also playing a role.

Predictions For the Post-Pandemic Office
New C-Suite Executive Focused on Remote Policies, More Flexibility and Smaller
Office Footprint
“Many organizations have been forced to carry out remote work this year as the
result of the pandemic and have found that, in many instances, remote work is
very successful and very effective,” said Timothy D. Golden, Ph.D, a professor
of management at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute whose research focuses on
remote work, telework, telecommuting, and virtual interactions. “As we move
forward, companies are beginning to consider how to institutionalize this within
the way that they work on a permanent basis going forward.”
In fact, remote work is going to be so much a part of life that Golden
predicts many large organizations will add a C-suite executive focused solely on
remote work. the chief remote work officer (CRO) would be much the same.
They would be in charge of effectively overseeing remote work within their
organization and ensuring that it is implemented effectively and work that is
carried out remotely is successful.”
While smaller organizations might not add a CRO, they still will tackle issues
that would be overseen by that position, including ensuring the right
technology, staff training, and culture are in place to make remote
work successful.
“It’s also about making sure to help managers understand how they might
manage folks in office and remote workers simultaneously,” Golden says. “It
also includes cross-functional types of issues between departments and
coordinating remote workers among them and making sure that practices and
procedures are standardized across the company.”
Golden said that research he’s seen indicates that about 25 percent of employees
prefer to be in the office all the time, 25 percent prefer a completely remote
environment, and that remaining half want a hybrid environment where they work
two to three days from home and go into the office the other days.
“That has substantial implications for office space and real estate,”
Golden said. “Companies need to re-envision their real estate strategy and
re-envision the purpose of the office.

Stores, restaurants shuttered in 2020 had one thing in common…
More than 2.4 million merchants worldwide closed their doors permanently in
2020 due to the economic repercussions of COVID-19 lockdowns, according to
new research from IHL Group. And of the shuttered locations, more than 97%
the closings came from retailers, restaurants and hospitality companies
with fewer than five locations.
After nearly eight years of location growth, 2020 saw a radical decline in
locations, according to the report.
"As governments defined ‘essential vs non-essential’ companies, they
unwittingly oversaw the largest transfer of retail wealth ever from smaller to
larger companies. Though rough, the impacts were somewhat muted in North
America and Europe compared to other regions due to government safety net
programs introduced. However, in emerging countries those programs simply did
not exist and the impact has been catastrophic."
IHL estimated it could be five years before levels return to the 2019 levels.

CPSC Warning Stops $34B Peloton Dead in its Tracks Saturday
Peloton fights federal safety recall after its treadmills left one child dead,
others injured
The Consumer Product Safety Commission warns the public to stop using the
company’s treadmills in homes with small children
One
month after revealing that one child died and others were injured in
accidents on Peloton treadmills, the at-home exercise company is fighting a
federal safety agency’s request that the company recall the products and has
delayed the agency’s investigation into potential safety problems, according to
officials familiar with the incident.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission this week took the unusual step of
issuing an administrative subpoena to require Peloton to disclose the name of
the child who died and the family’s contact information so regulators can
continue an inquiry into what went wrong, according to officials who spoke on
the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.
The previously undisclosed dispute between the nation’s product safety regulator
and Peloton — a $34 billion company famous for its stationary bicycles and
online workouts — has so far taken place outside public view.
The two sides also are clashing over whether Peloton’s treadmills need to be
taken off the market. The company and regulators had been negotiating over the
wording and timing of an agency warning to alert consumers to potential dangers
posed by the company’s Peloton Tread+, a $4,300 exercise machine, these
officials said.
A new safety warning from the CPSC
was posted early Saturday. It said the agency “found that the public
health and safety requires this notice to warn the public quickly of the hazard”
and advised consumers to stop using the treadmills.
Peloton
responded with a statement on its website Saturday that derided the
CPSC’s “unilateral press release about the Peloton Tread+ because it is
inaccurate and misleading” and said there was no reason to stop using the
treadmills.

Interface Delivers Savings & Vendor Consolidation with Managed SD-WAN, 4G/LTE,
UCaaS and Security Systems for Thrive Restaurant Group
Consolidation of vendor ecosystem unclogs
productivity bottlenecks and delivers savings and greater planning clarity to
one of Applebee's largest franchisees
Interface Security Systems,
a leading managed services provider delivering managed network, business
security and business intelligence solutions to distributed enterprises,
recently provided Thrive Restaurant Group, one of Applebee's largest franchisees
in the US, with scalable network, communications and security services. The new
solutions include a next-generation secure SD-WAN architecture with network
upgrades, 4G/LTE wireless capability, unified communications as service (UCaaS)
with cloud-based VoIP and a secure and standardized business security systems
platform. As a significant update to Thrive's outdated legacy systems, the new
Interface solution unclogs productivity bottlenecks and gives the flexibility
the restaurant chain needs to address changing customer preferences.
With
81 restaurants across the United States, Thrive found itself struggling with
challenges common to many geographically distributed businesses, including:
managing multiple network and voice providers, dealing with outdated CCTV
hardware and a lack of accountability from vendors.
"With 81 restaurants across ten states, we needed a partner we could count on to
manage our network, voice and security for all locations," explains Brian Houchin, Director of IT for Thrive Restaurant Group.
When it came to managing vendors, Thrive simply had too many. Troubleshooting
technical issues was challenging as it was difficult to pin accountability on a
specific vendor. In addition, tracking invoices, service credits and
administering multiple vendors was an inefficient and time-consuming exercise
every month.
Outdated hardware and changing regulations also posed a challenge. Unreliable
CCTV equipment left the restaurants, employees and customers vulnerable to
security risks on-premises. Constantly evolving Payment Card Industry (PCI)
compliance rules meant Houchin had to devote hours of his limited bandwidth to
keep up with the latest changes and updates so Thrive could avoid major
penalties and security threats.
With the COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupting Thrive's business,
restaurant staff found it challenging to handle sudden spikes in call volumes as
they had to work with a legacy phone system that was not scalable. The lack of
4G wireless coverage outside of the restaurant premises made curbside pickup and
take-out services impossible to manage.
Thrive turned to Interface to implement a secure, scalable network and
communications backbone that would unclog the productivity bottlenecks and give
the flexibility the restaurant chain needed to cater to changing customer needs.

to records filed in the case, since at least 2015, FIN7 members (also
referred to as Carbanak Group and the Navigator Group, among other names)
engaged in a highly sophisticated malware campaign to attack hundreds of U.S.
companies, predominantly in the restaurant, gaming, and hospitality
industries. FIN7 hacked into thousands of computer systems and stole millions of
customer credit and debit card numbers which were used or sold for profit.
In the United States alone, FIN7 successfully breached the computer networks of
businesses in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, stealing more than
20 million customer card records from over 6,500 individual point-of-sale
terminals at more than 3,600 separate business locations. Companies that
have publicly disclosed hacks attributable to FIN7 include such familiar chains
as Chipotle Mexican Grill, Chili’s, Arby’s, Red Robin, and Jason’s Deli.

Security Gaps in IoT Access Control Threaten Devices and Users
Researchers spot problems in how IoT vendors delegate device access across
multiple clouds and users.
A team of Internet of Things security researchers has discovered vulnerabilities
in the way IoT device vendors manage access across multiple clouds and users,
putting both individuals and vendors at risk.
IoT devices are increasingly managed through clouds operated by device
vendors such as Philips Hue, LIFX, and Tuya, or by cloud providers such as
Google and Amazon. These clouds mediate the users' access to specific
devices — for example, granting them permission to unlock a smart lock.
The researchers were especially interested in the emerging capability to
delegate device access across multiple clouds and users. Some vendors let Google
Home control devices under their clouds, so a person can manage multiple devices
from different vendors via their Google Home. It's a win for usability —
normally, someone with devices from various vendors would install multiple apps
to control them, which becomes a hassle as their IoT device collection grows.

comprehensive new legal framework for AI that are intended to address a
wide-variety of challenges commonly associated with these technologies.

Game Changer: Social-Media Techies Must
Protect Public Profiles From Data Scraping
Social-Media Data Leaks Draw Scrutiny From European Regulators
Public or private, data must be protected, European authorities say.
Facebook, Clubhouse and LinkedIn say recent data leaks involved information from
public user profiles, not from security breaches. In the European Union,
where privacy laws require businesses to protect even publicly available
personal data, that distinction might not relieve them of responsibility.
European privacy laws require businesses to protect even publicly available
personal data.
Facebook stressed that the leak of around 533 million users’ data
wasn’t a hack, saying attackers scraped the information from profiles
before September 2019, and that the company fixed a feature to prevent such
scraping after discovering the incident.
LinkedIn and Clubhouse made similar comments this month. Disclosing that it had
investigated a report that user data had been posted online for sale, LinkedIn
said the incident involved publicly viewable profile data and “was not a
LinkedIn data breach”. Clubhouse, meanwhile, responded on Twitter to a report
that user data had been posted online, saying that there hadn’t been a breach
and only public profile information had been posted.
The fact that public data was available on public profiles doesn’t insulate
the companies from European data-protection rules. “It’s not simply about
whether it’s public or private. It’s about whether there are safeguards in place
around [the data’s] processing and its use,” said Daragh O Brien, managing
director at Castlebridge, an Ireland-based data protection consulting firm. He
said European regulators will focus on how the companies handled data.
A LinkedIn spokeswoman referred to a statement issued by the company saying that
such data scraping violates its terms of service.

Don't Underestimate the ORC Interview
Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to work
alongside some incredible investigators in both the private and public sectors
that have the mission of investigating organized retail crime. As we all know,
rarely can retailers apprehend their way to a great shrink result when focused
on the opportunistic shoplifter. However, with the available technology
assisting in these cases combined with the power of a field interview – ORC
crime rings are being significantly disrupted. Many of the best results we have
seen when attempting to get information from a shoplifter come from utilizing
the concepts of rapport-based, non-confrontational interviewing such as the WZ
Method.

The Chinese Government is Zeroing In On
Internet Companies
Billionaire Jack Ma was one of China's biggest success stories - now the
government is turning on him
The government turning on him signals
growing animosity against billionaires in the Communist country.
The
Chinese government's takedown of Ma may be indicative of a larger zeroing-in
on billionaires in the country as an existing wealth gap grows wider, a gap
that has been exacerbated by the pandemic.
Disdain for the Communist country's affluent population has grown, as the New
York Times reported, and the government is leaning into that anti-rich
sentiment as it's broken down the power constructs that Ma has built in the
country.
China is tightening its grip on its economy
China is singling out companies and figures across industries in its
quest to rein in the economy, from
Swedish retailer H&M to homegrown tech giants, which have largely
enjoyed a lack of regulatory constraints.
The government
rolled out a set of new anti-competitive behavior rules for internet
companies like Alibaba in November. It included guidelines to prevent companies
from sharing sensitive user data and from joining together to stomp out smaller
competitors.
Alibaba CEO
Daniel Zhang said shortly after that he welcomed the new rules. And last
week, Chinese authorities
fined Alibaba what equals $2.8 billion USD over concerns that it was abusing
its dominant market position.
China was hoping other tech giants would take it as a warning, and it
looks like they have. About three dozen Chinese tech companies, including TikTok
owner Bytedance, JD.com, and the Twitter-like Weibo, have vowed to adhere to
China's new anti-competitive laws, according to a report from
the Wall Street Journal. They are also pledging to keep the party's values
at the forefront of their minds in hopes of escaping Ma's fate.
The Ma-China debacle signals that turbulent times may lie ahead for
innovation in China, as the Communist Party and its leaders demand that the
country's business community put patriotism above all else.

Union Appeals Amazon Election in Alabama, Says Company Violated Laws
In objections filed with the National Labor Relations Board, attorneys
representing Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union allege that Amazon
intimidated and threatened employees into voting against unionizing. The
union cited meetings that the company held with workers and a mailbox
installed outside of the warehouse. More than 70% of workers who cast
ballots in the election
voted against joining the RWDSU.
The union alleges that Amazon, through company representatives, threatened
employees with the loss of jobs or closing of the warehouse as well as possible
loss of compensation and benefits, if the union were approved. The union also
accused the company of targeting workers who asked questions at meetings by
removing them from the gatherings, potentially scaring other employees.
The union’s complaint also focused on a mailbox, installed by the U.S. Postal
Service at Amazon’s request outside the Bessemer, Ala., warehouse where the
election was taking place. The union alleged that the mailbox could have coerced
workers into incorrectly believing Amazon was conducting the election and
thereby feeling compelled to vote against unionizing. The filing also accuses
Amazon of electioneering by displaying a company campaign message near the
mailbox.

Perception becomes reality slowly on a macro level and it's difficult to change
it if it's incorrect or doesn't portray the truth. It's the same reason law
enforcement separates witnesses to ensure clarity and truth. The group mind
becomes influenced by opinion and agendas and distorts the true reality. One can
only rely on daily vigilance based on doing what's right to hopefully impact the
individuals one works with on a daily basis to carry the experience forward and
be witness to what is right.
