Minneapolis Boarding Up for March 8th Floyd
Murder Case? Gov. Activates National Guard
Are you considering boarding up your stores in the areas where protestors looted
last year? Also what about around the court house where the trial is taking
place?
Fact is we may still have the remnants of the polar vortex hanging around which
would probably limit the numbers significantly. If not, the verdict will
determine the outcome obviously.
Interestingly the
Corrections officers of color were barred from guarding Derek Chauvin file
discrimination lawsuit against Ramsey County. Minority Ramsey County
officers were kept away from Derek Chauvin.
Gov. Tim Walz is activating the Minnesota National Guard ahead of Chauvin's
trial, which is set to begin on March 8.
The preparation of the National Guard is one of many steps the state is taking
in anticipation of potential unrest around the trial. Chauvin has been charged
with second-degree murder and manslaughter in George Floyd's death last May.
Walz said this week that in addition to peaceful protests, the trials will be
a "magnet" for people who want to do more than just express their First
Amendment rights.

Walmart working with city to fight crime;
Trussville, Al. PD moving back to substation
The
city of Trussville is in talks with Walmart’s district asset protection leaders
about how to make the area safer for shoppers.
The meetings were spurred after a shooting on Feb. 2. No one was hurt in
the shooting and police arrested Walmart employee 20-year-old Jordan
Christopher Harris. Harris is now charged with attempted murder, criminal
mischief second-degree and reckless endangerment.
After the shooting, Police Chief Eric Rush said he
mobilized a specialized unit to fight crime around Walmart. He also said
he would like Walmart to provide funding for Flock Safety cameras at the
entrance of the property, in order to help curb crime.
Flock Safety license plate reader cameras take snapshots of tags and
alert law enforcement when they detect stolen vehicles, stolen tags, people with
outstanding warrants, or people or vehicles who have been entered into a hotlist.
The cameras can also help with investigations after crimes have been committed.
Rush said one of those other things is bringing back the police department’s
substation inside Walmart.
Scott Pope, the director of National Media Relations with Walmart, said the
leadership of the superstore chain is working hard to come up with solutions in
and around the Trussville Walmart.

Holiday Surges Over- Now Sweating Out the
Variants
Brutal Covid-19 Surge in the U.S. Weakens Significantly
Newly reported cases and hospitalizations have dropped over the past month,
but whether a turning point has been reached isn’t yet clear
The most severe surge of the
Covid-19 pandemic in the U.S. has weakened significantly, according to key
metrics, though public-health experts and epidemiologists urge caution, given
the spread of highly contagious new variants.
Newly reported cases have dropped 56% over the past month, based on a seven-day
average, marking
a significantly steeper fall than the U.S. saw after the spring and summer
surges. Hospitalizations have declined 38% since Jan 6. The seven-day average of
Covid-19 tests returning positive fell over the past week to 6.93%, the lowest
since Oct. 31.
Unlike during earlier moments in the pandemic, case counts are heading lower
amid
a mass-inoculation effort. But even after such a steep decline, cases and
hospitalizations remain higher than during earlier surges, deaths continue to
hover near records, and the
rise of more contagious coronavirus variants could quickly worsen the
spread.
“The concern right now is that while we’re seeing a decline in cases from the
holiday surges, as we identify more transmission of the variants within the
U.S., this could lead to another surge,” said Saskia Popescu, an assistant
professor at the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason
University.

Vaccinating America
The Retail Hiring Push
Some have said "Getting involved felt like their duty"

With Vaccines in More Drugstores, Pharmacies Go on Hiring Sprees
Pharmacies
are dangling five-figure signing bonuses and competing against one another to
quickly recruit pharmacists and support staff.
Phones are ringing with plentiful job opportunities. Prospective employers are
dangling five-figure signing bonuses. Businesses are hounding universities for
potential recruits.
The job market is booming — at least if you’re a pharmacist.
The vaccination drive in the United States is entering a new phase this week,
with the
start of a federal program that will send more doses of Covid-19 vaccines
into drugstores and grocery store pharmacies.
Pharmacies are turning to universities for help finding vaccinators. Training
programs are enrolling record numbers of students and workers looking to learn
how to give vaccines.
Starting on Thursday, the federal government will send vaccine doses directly to
dozens of chains that operate drugstores and grocery store pharmacies. The
chains will play a key role as the vaccination campaign, which so far has been
concentrated in hospitals and mass-vaccination sites like stadiums, expands into
places where many Americans are accustomed to getting shots.

Dallas: Union says front-line grocery workers need vaccines sooner

Walmart
is offering 3 days of paid leave if employees have vaccine side effects. Kroger
is giving employees $100 to get vaccinated.
Members of the United Food and Commercial Workers also said Tuesday that they
should continue to receive hazard pay.
The union, which represents 1.3 million grocery, meatpacking and food
processing workers, said COVID-19 infections and deaths in the U.S. remain
at peak levels, but many employers aren’t reflecting that reality in the
workplace.
The threats to essential workers are worse than in the early days of the
pandemic, said Marc Perrone, president of the UFCW. The union has had
trouble gathering statistics from employers, he said, but he estimates that
400 front-line workers in the U.S. have died from COVID-19 and 77,600 workers
have been infected or exposed.

Federal health officials emphasize proper mask fit to protect against
coronavirus variants, urging double masks in some cases
CDC
also found that improving the fit of a single surgical mask boosted protection
from potentially infectious aerosols.
Federal health officials on Wednesday urged Americans to consider wearing two
masks as one of several strategies to better protect themselves against the
threat of more contagious
variants of the coronavirus.
“We know that universal masking works,” said John T. Brooks, medical officer for
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s covid-19 response. “And now
these variants are circulating … whatever we can do to improve the fit of a mask
to make it work better, the faster we can end this pandemic.”
Two methods substantially boost fit and protection, according to a CDC report
and
guidance released Wednesday. One is wearing a cloth mask over a disposable
surgical mask. The second is improving the fit of a single surgical mask by
knotting the ear loops and tucking in the sides close to the face to prevent air
from leaking out around the edges and to form a closer fit.
Both of those methods reduced exposure to potentially infectious aerosols by
more than 95 percent in a laboratory experiment using dummies, the report said.

Covid-19’s Lasting Impact on Workforces
Salesforce to shrink its office footprint by 50%+
San Francisco’s biggest private employer—and tenant of the city’s tallest
building (Salesforce Tower)—says
more than half of its 54,000 global employees will work from home at
least part-time.
Chief People Officer Brent Hyder said Salesforce’s changes would include
revamping office layouts to increase collaboration space instead of having a
“sea of desks.” As employees are expected to do much of their independent
work remotely, the mock-ups of the new offices feature cafe-style seating,
open-air conference areas and private nooks, with an emphasis on clean
desks and social distancing.
While
the majority of Salesforce employees would no longer be working in the office
full time, the company cited an internal survey in which 80% of employees
said they wanted to maintain a connection to a physical space.
“We’re not going back to the way things were.”
Last May, Facebook Inc., which has about 56,600 employees, said it would be
moving to a substantially more remote workforce, and Twitter said it would
give all employees the option to stay remote.
Amazon Committed to Growing Office Space
Others have indicated they remain committed to office-based work. Amazon.com
Inc., which went on a hiring spree last year,
expanded office space in six U.S. cities and said last month that it had
leased more space in Boston to accommodate a growing workforce there.

Does Biden Change Directions on Huawei?
Huawei Files U.S. Lawsuit Disputing That It Is a Security Threat
China’s
Huawei Technologies Co. filed a lawsuit in the U.S. disputing its designation as
a national security threat by the Federal Communications Commission, stepping up
legal challenges in the country despite a change of administration in
Washington.
The lawsuit filed Monday in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit
asked for a review of an FCC ruling last year that found the company poses a
national security threat and blocked American telecommunications operators from
accessing a multibillion-dollar fund to buy Huawei-made telecom gear.
U.S. officials have long said that Beijing could exploit Huawei telecom gear to
spy or disrupt telecommunications networks, though they haven’t publicly shown
evidence of any such behavior. Huawei’s founder, Ren Zhengfei, has said the
company would never spy on behalf of any country.
The Biden administration hasn’t clearly spelled out its approach to Huawei.
During a hearing last month, President Biden’s nominee for commerce secretary,
Gina Raimondo,
vowed to protect the U.S. against Chinese technology threats but declined
to promise to maintain the Commerce Department’s blacklisting of Huawei, pending
a review.

Top 10 Action Items for 2021: The California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA)
How can your business prepare for the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA)
ramp-up in 2021? The CPRA is scheduled to become effective in January 2023.
Preparations will occur over the next two years, including establishing the new
California Privacy Protection Agency, which will take over rulemaking from the
California Attorney General. With an impact on most medium to large businesses
located in California or doing business in California, even companies that have
already taken steps to comply with the CCPA will need to plan carefully for
successful CPRA compliance.
Here are 10 essential steps that companies can consider taking now to prepare
for the CPRA:
1. Determine whether the CPRA applies to your organization.
2. Advise senior management of coming changes to privacy law and impact on your
organization.
3. Designate a CPRA compliance team with an appointed team leader, schedule
monthly check-ins and ensure CPRA compliance costs are built into this year's
budgets.
4. Determine if software development work is required and ensure software
development teams update this year's development roadmap.
5. Update your data map to include new CPRA-specific details, including
sensitive personal information designations and data retention periods.
6. Inventory your company contracts to determine contracts that will need to be
updated for compliance with the CPRA.
7. Identify privacy notices that will need to be updated.
8. Watch out for updates on the timing of additional CPRA regulations.
9. Review your company's current security posture and identify potential
security enhancements to be implemented this year.
10. Develop a CPRA compliance roadmap.

Massive spike in fraud across all industries - 4.3B attacks detected
since Black Friday
Arkose Labs, provider of online fraud and abuse prevention technology,
released new data on the latest fraud trends that reveal a massive spike in
fraud across all industries from Black Friday onwards. As consumers continue
to flock online in droves greater than ever before, credential stuffing,
account takeover (ATO) attacks and gift card fraud are poised to be top attack
vectors in 2021.
“2021 remains full of unknowns, however what’s certain is the frequency and
severity of fraud will never return to pre-pandemic levels,” said Vanita Pandey,
VP of Marketing and Strategy at Arkose Labs. “With digital channels serving as
an invaluable lifeline for much of the world, the Arkose Labs network saw 4
times as many transactions compared to the year prior. This increased activity
has created an ideal breeding ground for attacks as fraudsters work to blend in
with trusted users, rendering typical models of good versus bad user behavior
obsolete.”
The Black Friday Effect and Gift Card Fraud
As in previous years, the Arkose Labs network recorded a sustained increase in
fraud in the ecommerce industry from Black Friday through the end of the year.
This year, however, this sustained increase in fraud occurred across all
industries -- even those not typically associated with Black Friday, such as
social media, online dating and financial services.
Credential Stuffing and New Attack Types
The influx of new digital accounts created in Q4 of 2020 led to a drastic
increase in credential stuffing attacks, which power account takeover attacks.
Credential stuffing attacks more than doubled in Q4 compared to Q3, and
increased by nearly 90% compared to Q1.

Authorities arrest SIM swapping gang that targeted celebrities
Eight men were arrested in England and Scotland as part of an investigation
into a series of SIM swapping attacks targeting US celebrities.
Eight men were arrested across England and Scotland this week as part of a
coordinated crackdown against a SIM swapping gang that has hijacked the
identities and social media profiles of US celebrities.
The UK National Crime Agency,
which made the arrests on Tuesday, said the gang targeted well-known sports
stars, musicians, and influencers, primarily located in the US. Officials said
this gang engaged in SIM swapping attacks, where they tricked US mobile
operators into assigning a celebrity's phone number to a new SIM card under the
attacker's control.
While they had access to the victim's phone number, the SIM swappers would reset
passwords and bypass two-factor authentication on the victim's accounts. "This
enabled them to steal money, bitcoin and personal information, including
contacts synced with online accounts," the NCA said.
Europol said the gang stole more than $100 million worth of cryptocurrency
using this method.
The practice usually relies on tricking telco call center staff into assigning a
phone number to a new SIM card, but it often also relies on rogue employees
inside telephone companies willing to cooperate with criminal gangs.
One such employee was
charged in the US on Monday. The US Department of Justice indicted
Stephen Daniel Defiore for his role in helping SIM swappers steal the identities
of at least 19 people while working as an employee for an unnamed US phone
company between August 2017 and November 2018.
US authorities said Defiore received $2,325 in a series of twelve payments for
his role in the scheme. If found guilty, he now faces a prison sentence of up to
five years and a fine of up to $250,000.

Most zoombombing incidents are inside jobs
Most zoombombing incidents are “inside jobs” according to a study featuring
researchers at Binghamton University, State University of New York.
The videoconferencing app Zoom became an online home for many of these
activities, but the migration also led to incidents of zoombombing. Similar apps
such as Google Meet and Skype also saw problems.
Attackers don’t just stumble upon meeting invitations
They found that the vast majority of zoombombing are not caused by attackers
stumbling upon meeting invitations or “bruteforcing” their ID numbers, but
rather by insiders who have legitimate access to these meetings, particularly
students in high school and college classes. Authorized users share links,
passwords and other information on sites such as Twitter and 4chan, along with a
call to stir up trouble.
“Some of the measures that people would think stops zoombombing — such as
requiring a password to enter a class or meeting — did not deter anybody,”
Blackburn said. “Posters just post the password online as well.
“Even the waiting rooms in Zoom aren’t a deterrent if zoombombers name
themselves after people who are actually in the class to confuse the teacher.
These strategies that circumvent the technical measures in place are
interesting. It’s not like they’re hacking anything — they’re taking advantage
of the weaknesses of people that we can’t do anything about.”

COVID Update
Still 'No End in Sight' for Some Businesses
Easing of Retail Lockdowns in Ontario Not Enough to Save Many Businesses
The
easing of some health restrictions on businesses in Ontario announced on Monday
is a small, positive step but the Canadian Federation of Independent Business
says thousands of small businesses will remain in full lockdown even
after February 22.
“Small retailers will breathe a sigh of relief as Ontario will soon allow all
retail businesses to reopen to in-person sales in the next few weeks, including
at 25 percent of capacity in grey zones,” said Dan Kelly, President of the CFIB.
“This will finally end the bizarre and ineffective Ontario-only policy of
allowing big box stores to sell in-person while barring small firms from doing
the same. Retailers across the province will have been closed for at least 108
days since the Spring 2020 lockdowns began (33 percent of the pandemic) as of
next week. By the time they reopen, those in Toronto and Peel will have been
closed for 147 days (44 percent).
“For many businesses, particularly in Toronto, Peel, and York, today’s
announcement will mean that they will move from a province-wide lockdown to a
regional lockdown on February 22, 2021. This is deeply unfair and will
mean that in-person dining, personal services like hair and nail care, and gyms
will remain in full lockdown with no end in sight. By February 22, personal
care services in Toronto and Peel will have been closed for a total of 183 days
since the Spring 2020 lockdowns began, or roughly 55 percent of the pandemic.
Gyms and indoor dining in Toronto and Peel will have been closed for 220 days
(66 percent of the pandemic).”

COVID Lockdowns Leading to Permanent Closures
Study Tracks Retail and Restaurant Closures Across Canada
A
new study of consumers shows about one-third of Canadians indicate that a
store they regularly visited in the past has closed permanently and four in 10
have seen the permanent closure of a preferred restaurant during the
COVID-19 pandemic.
Across the country, store closures have been noticed most in the Prairie
Provinces (40 percent) and Quebec (40 percent), and are least likely to have
been witnessed in the Atlantic Provinces (25 percent), according to the
Narrative Research survey.
“The impact of stores and restaurants closing as a result of the pandemic
should not be underestimated,” said Margaret Brigley, CEO and Partner at
Narrative Research.
“Despite many government assistance programs and community supports for small
businesses, there is no doubt it’s been a challenging year for retail and those
in food services.”

Facial Recognition & AI in Canada
Clearview AI’s Misconduct Opens Larger Discussion Around Privacy and Use of
Technology in Canadian Retail Locations
Industry
expert, loss prevention veteran, and Founder of Bottom Line Matters consultancy,
Stephen O’Keefe, says that the case nonetheless opens up a larger discussion
and debate concerning Canadian privacy rights and the use of these types of
technologies by law enforcement and those operating within the retail
industry.
“There are a number of existing technologies, and many more emerging
technologies in development, which present massive benefits toward ensuring a
safe and secure environment,” he points out. “The existing technologies in a
lot of cases could provide retailers with comprehensive solutions to an array of
challenges that they face. But the investment in these technologies and their
implementation into retail operations is being held up in the legal departments
of organizations, or resisted by businesses altogether, as a result of the
ambiguity around their appropriate uses with respect to privacy rights.
Retailers require the development of a more complete
definition on the matter and a continuation of the conversation."
O’Keefe stresses that one of the fundamental learnings that emerges from cases
like the OPCC’s investigation into the conduct of Clearview AI is the fact that
retailers and other businesses that leverage artificial intelligence and
facial recognition need to approach their consideration of use with greater
diligence and accountability. He says that it’s about gaining a full
understanding of the technology, the artificial intelligence that’s been created
and the data that helps feed that intelligence in order to properly assess the
capability and usage of technology systems that they purchase. However, what he
suggests is of equal importance is the requirement of retailers and their
technology partners to remain resolute and to not be discouraged by the OPCC’s
findings into Clearview AI’s practices.

In Case You Missed It
Clearview's facial recognition tech is illegal mass surveillance,
Canada privacy
commissioners say
One commissioner said the software puts
people 'continually in a police lineup'
Clearview AI's facial recognition amounts to mass surveillance and the company
should delete the faces of Canadians from its database,
Canada's privacy commissioners said Wednesday.
Commissioner Daniel Therrien said what Clearview does - scraping photos from
social media and other public sites for use by law enforcement - is "illegal"

'The Rumors Became Real'
Former Nygard employees, intern say fear, intimidation, even sexual harassment
commonplace at the company
Thirteen years after leaving a job at Nygard International Partnership,
Brenda Bourns finally feels safe enough to share her story. Bourns worked as
the special events manager at the company's head office on Inkster Boulevard in
the fall of 2007. She quit 10 months later.
Peter Nygard, 79, was arrested in Winnipeg in December and is currently
awaiting extradition to the U.S. for allegations he sexually trafficked
women and girls over a 25-year period. Nygard denies all the allegations and
says they are part of a conspiracy to tarnish his reputation.
Bourns said what she witnessed during a trip to Burnaby, B.C., for a Nygard
store opening made her realize the job wasn't for her.
"The rumours became real ... all the things that I've heard for decades
of rumours, innuendo, allegations, hearsay, all of the things ... they were
real and I'm done," recalled Bourns.

Racial Bias in the U.S. is Spilling Into Canada
The retail sector has a racial bias problem — and this Sephora survey suggests
it's costing it customers
A
study commissioned by beauty giant Sephora on racial bias in the U.S.
retail sector is having reverberations in Canada — at Sephora's Canadian
stores and for those in the beauty industry. The Racial Bias in Retail Study,
released in January, aimed to quantify how common it is to experience racial
bias, and identify opportunities to eliminate it.
"I absolutely saw myself in that study," said Canadian beauty brand creator,
Tomi Gbeleyi-Curtis. "I've had experiences where people follow me around the
store."
"It was the first of its kind study to really glean insights into the disparate
experiences that many U.S. BIPOC shoppers and employees actually face today,"
said Debbie McDowell, director of social impact for Sephora Canada.
Sephora Canada doesn't plan to do a Canadian version of the survey;
instead, it will build off of the U.S. findings.

'Extinction of Human Privacy'
'Dystopia Prime:' Amazon AI van cameras spark surveillance concerns
Equipping Amazon's fleet of delivery vehicles with AI cameras could set a
dangerous precedent for privacy, advocates say
Amazon.com
Inc's announcement this week that it would be rolling out AI-powered cameras
in its branded delivery vans for safety has drawn criticism from privacy
advocates and workers concerned with being subjected to surveillance on the job.
The world's largest e-commerce firm said the cameras, which are developed by
transportation technology company Netradyne, would improve safety of both
drivers and the communities in which they deliver.
But employees like Henry Search, a 22-year-old delivery driver in Washington
state, said they saw cameras capturing their work day as an "invasion of
privacy".
"We are out here working all day, trying our best already," Search told the
Thomson Reuters Foundation in a phone interview. "The
cameras are just another way to control us."
Privacy advocates warned that equipping Amazon's fleet of about 30,000
delivery vehicles with AI cameras could set a dangerous precedent for
privacy.
"This appears to be the largest expansion of corporate surveillance in human
history," said Evan Greer, deputy director of tech nonprofit Fight for the
Future. "If this becomes the norm, we are talking about the extinction of
human privacy."

Nashville, TN: Metro Detective arrests Walgreens employee allegedly selling
cancer patients’ pain prescriptions
A
three-month investigation by North Precinct undercover detectives with
assistance from the regional Walgreens asset protection manager resulted in
the arrests of three persons involved in a conspiracy to fraudulently obtain
prescription pain medication. After being contacted by a citizen regarding his
wife’s medication being fraudulently obtained by another person at Walgreens’
Pharmacy, detectives began the meticulous work of uncovering a plot allegedly
involving pharmacy employee Dor Charika McKinney, 27, who is accused of
providing the personal information of customers with prescriptions to her
co-conspirators who would then use that information to purchase the victim’s
medication before they could pick it up. The illegal activity began shortly
after McKinney was hired at the end of November. During an interview, she
admitted her involvement in the conspiracy. Thirteen hundred prescription
pills were diverted from patients prior to her arrest. McKinney is charged
with eleven counts of conspiracy to commit identity theft and felony drug
conspiracy. Police have identified six different suspects who they say are part
of this conspiracy to fraudulently obtain pain medication.

Shootings & Deaths
Buffalo, MN: 1 Person Killed and 4 Injured in Shooting at Minnesota Health
Clinic
A
man was in custody after a shooting at a health clinic outside of Minneapolis on
Tuesday that left one person dead and four more injured, the authorities in
Buffalo, Minn., said. The shooting sent a wave of panic through residents of the
tight-knit community, who were devastated that health care workers — already
under siege over 11 months of a pandemic — were now contending with violence at
work. By midafternoon, a suspect was in custody, a man with a history of
grievances that authorities said they had known of for years. At the news
conference, the sheriff announced that the suspected gunman was Gregory P.
Ulrich, 67. The police said they have had many contacts with Mr. Ulrich dating
back to 2003, and Chief Pat Budke of the Buffalo Police Department indicated
that Mr. Ulrich had been treated at Buffalo clinics and may have been targeting
someone there. In an interview, Mr. Ulrich’s younger brother Richard said
Gregory Ulrich had back surgery about two years ago, after which he became
dependent on opioids and frequently grew frustrated when doctors refused to
prescribe them to him.

Inglewood, CA: LAPD standoff at Inglewood shopping center over as police
determine suspect escaped
A
lengthy apparent barricade outside an Inglewood shopping center ended after
several hours Tuesday evening when police were able to determine the suspect had
actually fled the area before they arrived. The incident started around 4:30
p.m. with a traffic stop at Manchester Boulevard and Figueroa Street. Los
Angeles Police Department officials say the driver failed to comply with orders
and instead backed the vehicle toward officers. They opened fired at the
vehicle but no injuries were reported. The vehicle fled but an LAPD
helicopter spotted it a short time later. The suspect abandoned the vehicle in
the shopping center's parking lot and fled into a store. Dozens of officers
surrounded the complex at Imperial Highway and Crenshaw Boulevard after the
short chase. Police said later there was no indication the suspect held
anyone hostage inside the store. After about three hours, officials say they
were able to confirm the suspect had changed clothes inside the store and had
fled the scene before officers arrived.

Passion is probably the one trait all employers look for in every search and in
every candidate. It's also the one ingredient that's hard to manufacture and
almost impossible to fake. Certainly, energy level has a lot to do with it and
virtually everyone can pick it up a notch when they need to. But passion is
something that's deep and something money can't buy and quite frankly it's worth
it's weight in gold because passion motivates people and it's what separates the
good from the great. If you've got passion, let it show and, if you don't, try
to go find it because every employer wants it.
