Sources: Lowe's Restructures Asset Protection - Job
Cuts and Title Changes
Lowe’s CEO Marvin Ellison may or may not have had something to do with a total
restructuring of Lowe’s Asset Protection department, but it now looks more like
The Home Depot department of his past.
This past week, all in-store Loss
Prevention Specialists, and all LP Managers in store's risk levels 1-4 were
eliminated. Risk Levels 5-6 (urban metro high crime) LPMs remain in place. Also
a new Senior Asset Protection Manager position was created to cover 3-6 stores
within a district. Many of the former Market Loss Prevention & Ops managers have
been re-titled to District AP & Ops managers.
The changes impacted roughly 1,300
individuals.
Lowe’s to hire for 65,000 positions, even while cutting other jobs
Mooresville-based Lowe’s Cos. Inc. says it will hire 65,000 seasonal and
permanent employees this year, including the first 500 of a planned 2,000 IT
employees.
The company also says it will cut some jobs as it eliminates services such as
project specialists for interior home jobs. Lowe’s didn’t say how many jobs
would be eliminated.
The hiring includes 50,000 seasonal jobs for its spring season, the
busiest time for Lowe’s and other home-improvement retailers. The company will
also hire 10,000 for permanent jobs around its 2,240 stores to create a
“merchandising service team” to manage its store inventory. The team will also
carry out resets of merchandise in the stores where products are replaced on the
shelves. Another 6,000 full-time assistant store managers and department
supervisors will be added to lead store staffs.

U.S. Retail Industry, Jobs, & State Economies Impacted by $369 Billion in
Returns
Return Fraud & Abuse Cost American Workers
Nearly 800,000 Jobs in 2018
Fraud Cost States Between $1.1 and $1.5 Billion in Lost Sales Tax
Appriss Retail, the industry leader in retail performance improvement solutions,
has released an analysis of the cost and ramifications of U. S. consumer
merchandise returns on retailers, jobs, and state economies. The “2018 Consumer
Returns in the Retail Industry” report, which analyzes results from the National
Retail Federation’s 2018 Organized Retail Crime survey, states that overall
value of returned merchandise in the United States during the past year was
almost $369 billion. This cost does not include the overhead a retailer incurs
when receiving, sorting, and repackaging useable goods for resale. In addition,
$18 billion to $24 billion of that sum were fraudulent returns.
Return rates vary greatly by retail vertical; for example, drug
stores/pharmacies showed a 2.14 percent blended return rate while auto parts
retailers had a rate of 22.58 percent. Most verticals are within two or three
percentage points of the National Retail Federation’s published median of a 10
percent return rate. The report contains the blended return rate for 10
retail verticals.
Other highlights from the report include:
● 38 percent of retailers report an increase in online purchases returned to
brick-and-mortar stores.
● In 2018, return fraud and abuse cost American workers between 607,400 and
789,600 jobs. In addition, return fraud and abuse cost states between
$1.1 billion and $1.5 billion in lost sales tax. (A state-by-state breakdown
is included in the report.)
● For every $100.00 in returns, retailers lost $5.00 to return fraud
throughout the year. At the holidays, that amount was estimated to increase
to $6.50.

French Protests Reboot
Over the Weekend
The yellow vest antigovernment movement gained momentum again during the
post-holiday season, with the number of demonstrators rebounding and violent
incidents on the uptick Saturday, including an attack on a government ministry
building and the assaults of police officers in Paris.
In what’s been called “Act VIII” of the movement, more than 3,000 people
demonstrated in the French capital on Saturday. Overall in France, the turnout
was 50,000, versus 29,000 on Dec. 29 and more than 250,000 on Nov. 17.
The demonstrations that began two months ago as a protest over gas taxes snarled
holiday shopping, denting retailers’ revenues in the run-up to Christmas. If
ongoing, they will continue to dampen consumer sentiment during the official
sales period, which kicks off in most of the nation on Wednesday.
On Saturday, the tony Avenue des Champs-Élysées, lined with stores such as Louis
Vuitton, Cartier and Sephora, was closed for hours, as was the bridge leading to
the National Assembly, among other locations. Over the past two months,
protesters vandalized storefronts, looted shops and defaced national monuments.

Top 5 Security Trends That Will Continue in 2019
Here are five trends observed across the security industry in 2018 and expected
to remain strong in 2019:
1. Embracing automation. With the growing popularity of Security
Orchestration, Automation and Response (SOAR), automation is starting to take
hold and will continue to expand into other areas of security operations. Look
for automation and orchestration to be incorporated into tools to help reduce
mean time to detection (MTTD) by bringing threat intelligence together,
translating it into a usable format and proactively pushing data instead of
requiring it to be polled.
2. Securing data in the public cloud. With the growing number of
organizations moving to the public cloud, how to transition securely will remain
top of mind. Those that are successful will recognize that security is a
partnership. The cloud provider is typically responsible for security of the
cloud and you are responsible for the security in the cloud.
3. Security is a people problem. People unwittingly provide
cybercriminals with a gold mine of information. Organizations must continually
look for ways to compensate for insider negligence to mitigate the risk of
insider threats. Start by managing your data classification so that you can
implement consistent access privilege management.
4. Data privacy spurs business growth. Organizations that approach data
privacy as an opportunity for business success and innovation will position
themselves to thrive in the global, digital economy. This requires we shift from
the preconceived notion of privacy as encryption and the secreting away or
nonuse of data and drive toward data curation.
5. Customer experience as a key driver of success. Customer experience
will continue to take hold in the security industry and become an imperative.
That’s because improved security leads to improved customer experience and vice
versa.

Amazon’s cashierless Go stores could be a $4 billion business by 2021
Amazon’s new cashless, cashierless stores — which allow customers to just grab
items off shelves and automatically get charged upon exiting, thanks to a bevy
of sensors and cameras — bring in about 50 percent more revenue on average
than typical convenience stores, according to new estimates from RBC Capital
Markets analysts.
Using their own purchases at Go stores as data points, RBC analysts estimated
that the typical order size at the new futuristic shops is around $10. The
analysts also counted the number of visitors to an Amazon Go — an average of 550
a day — which would mean the average Go store generates an estimated $1.5
million in revenue a year excluding days when current Amazon Go stores are
closed.
Amazon has considered a plan to open as many as 3,000 Amazon Go stores by 2021,
according to a Bloomberg report, meaning the futuristic shops could generate in
the ballpark of $4.5 billion in sales a year if the company follows that
aggressive store rollout plan and if new-store sales are similar to current RBC
estimates.

Sears may liquidate after Lampert’s $4.4B bid deemed insufficient
Sears Holdings Corp. is preparing for the potential that this year will be its
last. The storied retailer started laying the groundwork for a liquidation after
Chairman Eddie Lampert’s bid to buy several hundred stores out of bankruptcy
fell short of bankers’ qualifications, people with knowledge of the matter said.
Sears representatives summoned liquidation firms and other advisers to emergency
meetings on Friday after rejecting Lampert’s $4.4 billion bid to buy and operate
Sears stores, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the
discussions were private. Sears would now focus on preparing for liquidation
sales to begin as early as mid-month, they said.

Manhattan Retail Battle Heats Up As Saks Closes Store Downtown
Luxury retail company Saks Fifth Avenue is closing a two-year-old location at

competition from other high-end retailers for physical space amid shoppers’
exodus to online shopping.
Bloomberg reported that the Saks women’s store was shuttering, as Nordstrom and
Neiman Marcus all announced they were opening Manhattan locations this year,
moving into territory traditionally controlled by the likes of Bergdorf Goodman,
Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s.

Social Media Exposure Can Exacerbate the Negative Impact of a Data Breach
Increased social media exposure can adversely affects the share price of firms
who’ve experienced a data breach. According to the study,
Social media and stock price reaction to data breach announcements,
conducted by Dublin City University (DCU) researchers, social media exposure can
exacerbate the negative impact of data breach announcements and increase the
cost of these breaches, with an average additional decrease in stock price of
1.2%. The study primarily focused on Twitter, and it looked at 87 individual
breaches across 73 publicly listed US companies that occurred over a four-year
period.
The effect is even more pronounced when a firm discloses a breach via their
Twitter account (an additional decrease of 5.2% in stock price), increases their
number of tweets over the event period, and has a large following on Twitter,
the study said.
According to the study, "A company crisis like a data breach is likely generate
large volumes of interactions with the public. In this context, keeping
control over the information flow may be challenging and at the same time
paramount.
If such control is not maintained, the reputation damage may be more
pronounced due to the spreading of misinformation around the breach event."

How Well Are You Protecting Your Brand from Digital Risk?
The Internet has become an essential tool for companies to grow their business,
but it also poses digital risks to your brand reputation and integrity through
the following key ways:
Online brand and social media abuse: Bad actors can spoof social media
profiles of your company or brands, as well as take advantage of employee
activity such as oversharing information about your brand or organization on
social media. Spoofed profiles may look so legitimate that even some employees
cannot determine if they are real or not. Such profiles can easily dupe
individuals to purchase counterfeit products and input credit card data and
credentials.
Malicious web domains: Cyber criminals will register and use web domains
extremely similar to your actual domain names. Using techniques like
typosquatting where an “m” is replaced with an “rn” in a URL, or domain
squatting where shoestore.com becomes shoestore.io, it is easy to miss the
distinction.
Fraudulent mobile applications: Threat actors will take advantage of
out-of-date mobile applications that you no longer maintain or will even create
one for you that passes for a legitimate application. Malicious apps that
impersonate brands may use spyware to steal information from users, ranging from
banking information to login credentials.
Each of these methods are used to trick customers and employees to unknowingly
hand over valuable data. This data is then used for profit by the attackers or
sold online for others to do what they will.

Online Advertisers Embrace Blockchain to Fight
Fraud
IBM Corp., Toyota Corp., and a growing number of startups are using blockchains
to try to crack down on online advertising fraud.
The complexity of online advertising and the struggle to track ad spending has
allowed fraudsters to avoid being caught, attorneys told Bloomberg Law. But
blockchain technology can uncover ad performance discrepancies and let
advertisers and publishers know how many clicks an ad is really getting, the
attorneys said.
Digital advertising is increasingly dominating the ad industry. Online
advertising will account for 51.8 percent of total global advertising spending
in 2020, up from 45.5 percent in 2018, Bloomberg Intelligence data show.
Ad fraud is a “big deal” for the digital media ecosystem, Bloomberg Intelligence
analyst Paul Sweeney said. Fraudulent activity could cost advertisers $44
billion globally in 2022, up from $18.7 billion in 2018, according to Juniper
Research, a digital market research firm.
Blockchain promises to help remedy the problem by making the advertising
ecosystem more transparent, attorneys say. The technology allows users to see
and verify transactions on an unchangeable, decentralized digital record. It
allows participants in an advertising supply chain to track each transaction and
identify and resolve disparities in the data.

The 'Amazon Effect'
How Ecommerce Will Change in 2019 and Beyond
So, what is the Amazon Effect? The meaning of the phrase can vary depending on
the industry being cited, but it generally refers to the difficulty many stores
-- particularly brick-and-mortar outlets -- face when they compete with Amazon.
The online retailer's vast selection, fast shipping, free returns, low prices
and "Prime" subscription service all serve to create high customer expectations
for any retailer hoping to compete.
Does that mean Amazon is obliterating the competition? Studies show that
Amazon’s success has led to some business closures, but many companies, in fact,
have tackled the Amazon effect creatively and effectively to compete for
customers and hold their ground. In short, the Amazon Effect is just another
reason the retail environment is always in flux.
With that in mind, here are my predictions for how the ecommerce scene will
evolve in 2019:
The “last mile” logistics race will grow more competitive.
Ecommerce providers have been under ever-increasing pressure to match Amazon’s
speed and efficiency, and there is no evidence consumer expectations are easing;
a 2018 study found that 43 percent of consumers surveyed expected “much faster”
delivery times that same year, a sharp increase from 2017.
To meet this consumer expectation, expect more ecommerce companies to turn to
courier software to match or exceed Amazon’s delivery performance in 2019.
The “mobile-first” switch will finally happen.
Ecommerce providers have had to think about mobile-users for a while now, but
2019 may be the year mobile applications become a priority over desktop-user
interfaces.
Mobile was already a high priority, but by this year's holiday season 11 months
hence, we could see it becoming priority number one, as the share of ecommerce
visits commanded by desktop sites continues to shrink.
AI and ecommerce will grow even closer.
Amazon has never been one to rest on its laurels, so one of the significant
avenues of expansion it's explored over the past few years has been artificial
intelligence and its application, machine learning.
Fortunately, other ecommerce retailers can also unlock AI tools; Towards Data
Science lists “shoestring” AI options such as simple chatbots to provide
customer support and AI-based marketing strategies. In 2019, expect to see even
more AI deployment at Amazon and other companies.
The online grocery battle will continue.
One of the biggest ecommerce stories of 2017 had a lot to do with
brick-and-mortar locations -- namely, Amazon’s $13.7 billion purchase of Whole
Foods.
One study showed that households which used online grocery delivery based on a
nearby physical location spent about $200 per month, while the average Amazon
grocery shopper spent $74 per month. That was certainly disheartening news for
Amazon, but for the rest of the grocery and ecommerce world, the takeaway is
clear: The war for the immensely valuable online grocery market continues.

Tip of the Day

A lot of articles talk about "How to impress your boss" and give you tips on
how to accomplish this. But at the end of the day, it's all about supporting
them, helping them reach their objectives and not trying to merely impress them.
Impressing a person is great, but usually short lived. Supporting and helping
them reach their goals requires a long-term effort that at times can truly test
your resolve and stamina.
The thought has always been if your boss gets promoted, then you might as well
-- as long as you are the one helping them get ahead.
Just a Thought, Gus
