there at the same time receiving all of the information together in
order to come up with a holistic response."
In this interview (see audio link below photo), Green discusses:
● The evolution of the threat landscape in 2018;
● the functions of the fusion center;

Checkout-Free Technology Expanding

Combating the potential of theft at self-checkout
Demand for self-checkout is growing from both retailers and consumers. As
retailers adopt new payment and scanning technologies, though, the systems may
be further opening the door to theft, creating more headaches for loss
prevention departments.
Nevertheless, allowing shoppers to scan their own items can also create more
headaches for loss prevention departments. In Europe, where self-checkout is
more common, there’s some evidence of higher rates of theft.
Coupon company Voucher Codes Pro surveyed more than 2,600 people and found
nearly 20 percent admitted to stealing from self-checkout in the past;
half said they did so because they didn’t think they would get caught.

The biggest changes coming to the point of sale in 2019
Despite years of advancements in mobile and online payments, the physical point
of sale remains still ripe for disruption. The physical POS is, in many cases,
still a heavy piece of hardware plugged into a receipt printer and maybe a PIN
pad. As the new year begins, replacement systems — based primarily on cloud and
mobile technologies — are finally ubiquitous and practical enough for nearly any
retailer to consider.
But this is more than about a tech upgrade. Anything retailers can do to move
the payment away from the checkout lanes will reclaim valuable store space and
remove friction from sales.

Retail POS Terminals Market to Exhibit Phenomenal Gains to 2024
Government Efforts to Promote Digital Payments Driving Worldwide Growth
Retail POS Terminals Market worth over $40bn by 2024 and is predicted to grow at
over 10% CAGR from 2017 to 2024. Technological advancements such as the advent
of near field communication (NFC) technology and biometrics has revolutionized
the retail POS terminals market. Integrated card machines allow the usage of
multiple payment techniques and can also gather data for providing in depth
analysis. Business owners are now required to provide flexible payment option
such as credit cards, checks, and digital payments to attract customers.
The rising demand for cloud-based POS systems is anticipated to drive the retail
POS terminals market during the forecast timespan owing to the cost
effectiveness and the reduced need for frequent upgrades. Additionally, advanced
SaaS systems integrates customer resource management (CRM) solutions to combine
historical customer data to influence online ordering, loyalty programs, and
targeted marketing.

Over 500 Million Chip Cards To Be Issued Globally Over The Next Five Years
Juniper Research: Retailers to Lose $130bn Globally in
Card-not-Present Fraud Over the Next 5 Years
Complex fraud & retail inertia key to increased losses
Juniper’s new research, Online
Payment Fraud: Emerging Threats, Segment Analysis & Market Forecasts 2018-2023,
claimed that as cybercriminals seek to monetise their knowledge to a wider, less
tech-savvy audience, complex cross-channel fraud will become the ‘new normal’,
with retailers ill-prepared to fight it.

Fraud: 3 Dynamics Changing Fraud in 2019.
The report found that eCommerce merchants remain, to a large extent, focused on
assessing fraud risk at the point of transaction. As such, analysis in terms of
session and behavioural monitoring, or validating the identity of a user to
assess fraud risk before any transaction, is lacking. Juniper cited industry
perception of FDP (Fraud Detection & Prevention) as one of the reasons behind
this, with FDP seen as a high-cost tool used only to prevent fraud.

With Drone Deliveries on the Horizon, Europe
Moves to Set Ground Rules
The path to proving that drones can operate together and be tracked in crowded
skies has brought a group of companies to a former military airfield outside
Brussels, where they will test their unmanned aviation technology. The project,
known as Safir, will help the European authorities devise a set of rules for the
commercial use of drones.
“It is about testing 10 drones with different purposes, applications and IT
systems,” said Mark Vanlook, the chief executive of DronePort, the recently
opened facility where the tests will take place.
The Safir project is happening at a transitional moment for the European Union’s
commercial drone industry. The European Parliament and Council just expanded the
bloc’s regulatory authority to include all civil drones, and the European
Commission is completing a harmonized set of rules for drone use. nytimes.com

Holiday sales strongest in six years - Up 5.1%
Total U.S. retail sales, excluding automobiles, rose 5.1% to more than $850
billion between Nov. 1 and Dec. 24, according to Mastercard SpendingPulse,
which tracks overall online and in-store retail spending trends across all forms
of payment. It was the strongest holiday shopping season in six years.
The apparel category had a strong season, with sales rising 7.9% over
last year. It was the category’s biggest increase since 2010.
● Department stores finished the season with a 1.3% decline from
2017. This follows two years with growth below 2%, some of which can be
attributed to store closings. However, the online sales growth for department
stores indicated a more positive story, with growth of 10.2%.
● Home improvement spending continued to surge across the U.S. with spending
during the holiday season up 9.0%.
● Electronics and appliances were down 0.7%.
● The home furniture and furnishings category grew 2.3%.
● Online shopping also saw large gains of 19.1%, compared to 2017.

How Managers Can Overcome Their Personal Biases
You can't manage others if you can't manage yourself. And for any manager,
effective self-management requires a certain level of professional
self-knowledge. Achieving that can be trickier than it sounds, given the human
tendency to overrate one's own abilities and performance.
"We are wildly overconfident in most domains. We are wildly bad at
self-assessing," says Khalil Smith, a former leadership development expert at
Apple who is now a practice leader at the NeuroLeadership Institute. To
illustrate, Smith cites a driving survey in which 80 percent of respondents
rated themselves as better-than-average drivers, a mathematical impossibility.
This also applies to leadership, he adds.
"Most managers think they're really good managers, and a lot of them aren't,"
Smith explains. "Confidence and competence are not correlated." But if
self-knowledge requires great effort to attain, the results will be worth it,
experts say. It will ultimately allow managers to maximize their strengths,
minimize their shortcomings, and modify their responses and behaviors, all for
the cause of becoming more effective leaders.

'How Fake Handbags Fund Terrorism and Organized Crime'
12-min TED Talk presentation by Tommy Hilfiger's Sr. Brand Protection Manager
What's
the harm in buying a knock-off purse or a fake designer watch? According to
counterfeit investigator Alastair Gray,
fakes like these fund terrorism and organized crime. Learn more about the
trillion-dollar underground economy of counterfeiting -- from the criminal
organizations that run it to the child labor they use to produce its goods -- as
well as measures you can take to help stop it. "Let's shine a light on the dark
forces of counterfeiting that are hiding in plain sight," Gray says.
"What I've learned in the 10 years of investigating fakes is that once you start
to scratch the surface, you find that they are rotten to the core, as are the
people and organizations that are making money from them, because they are
profiting on a massive, massive scale," Gray says. "You can only make around a
hundred to 200 percent selling drugs on the street. You can make 2,000
percent selling fakes online with little of the same risks or penalties.
And this quick, easy money then goes on to fund the more serious types of crime,
and it pays the way to making these organizations, these criminal organizations,
look more legitimate."

Workplace Predictions for 2019 From The
Washington Post
PRIVACY: Workers will demand that employers do more to insure their personal
data
A “global awakening” about threats to the privacy of our data as consumers will
spill over into concerns about the personal data we give our employers.
“There are an increasing number of protections in place for consumers — things
like the ability to opt in and opt out, or needing consent to use their data,”
she said. “Employees, however, have less control over how their employers use
their data.” Yet plenty of data is at risk. Beyond social security numbers and
bank account information from direct deposits, data like what movies you watched
in a hotel room on a business trip (charged to a corporate credit card) or what
vacation days you took could reveal other personal tastes or even religious
information to outside parties.
Bergman predicts more pressure for employers to provide some of the same options
to their workers that customers have, such as being able to request access to
information that companies have about them.
“I think what they’ll start to demand is that employers specify a certain
duty of care when it comes to dealing with their data,” Bergman said. “I
think it will become part of their marketing pitch, in the same way
benefits packages are, as employers start to disclose how they treat employers’
data, too, and use that as an indicator of the moral and ethical fabric of the
company.”
WORKPLACE TECH: Email will move past its peak and continue its demise
Companies have been moving toward messaging and away from email for
internal communications for years, but 2019 will be the year email moves past
its peak — at least at work, predicts Josh Bersin, an industry analyst who
studies workplace technology.
“If you’re working with less than 200 people at a time, you really don’t need
email — it’s a waste,” he said.
The popularity of messaging tools such as Slack will continue, he said,
but he also believes greater adoption of Microsoft’s Teams — its take on the
group messaging app that’s integrated into Office 365 — will be a game-changer.
Although Teams was released in 2017, it’s still being adopted or turned on by
many corporate IT departments, and Bersin believes 2019 will be the year it
takes off because of how closely it’s embedded with other Microsoft software or
features.
Both Bersin and Kropp also see greater adoption of workplace tech tools that
“nudge” managers or employees via texts or other alerts that could divert
users, too, from traditional emails (though the nudges are likely to come
through email initially, too). From reminding managers with a phone alert that
an employee in a competitive field hasn’t had a raise to nudging people within
an HR software system about using their remaining days of paid time off,
artificial intelligence is likely to do more and more to urge behaviors among
managers and employees. (Former Google HR chief Laszlo Bock is behind one
start-up working in this area, Humu.)
“I think it’s a new communications paradigm” at work — “a paradigm of nudges,
texts and alerts,” Bersin said. “That is, until we overload that channel, too.”

3 Reasons Why You Should Manage Your Third-Party Security Better in 2019
If you are worried about managing your third parties, you are not alone. Gartner
reports that nearly 70% of chief audit executives reported third-party risk as
one of their top concerns, but many still struggle to manage this risk. The
reason? Because it’s a tough job.
Organizations rely on third parties, who receive access to businesses’ digitized
systems and processes. These systems often contain confidential and sensitive
information, and organizations must make sure that each third party maintains a
high level of security to safely access these systems. Vetting these third
parties and continuing to effectively monitor them for cyber gaps can be
time-consuming and expensive.
So here’s a great New Year’s resolution for every business: Make 2019 the year
that you take control of your third parties’ cybersecurity posture. Here are
three good reasons why:
1. There are more third-party data breaches than ever before, and hackers are
more sophisticated than ever before.
More than 75% of respondents in a recent Ponemon Institute report said that
third-party data breaches are on the rise, but we probably could have guessed
that simply from the frequency of data breaches reported in the news. The
victims have included major companies such as Ticketmaster, Newegg, British
Airways, and others.
2. The number of third parties that organizations are hiring continues to
rise.
According to the Ponemon report, the average number of third parties employed by
organizations has increased from 378 in 2016, to 471 in 2017, to 588 in 2018.
Which means that managing third parties will only continue to get more
complicated.
3. There are more data privacy regulations and more penalties.
Move over, GDPR: There are more data privacy regulations on the way, and these
hail from the United States. Beginning January 1, 2020, the California Consumer
Privacy Act will go into effect, granting California citizens certain data
privacy rights.

The eyeglasses retailer said that about 198,000 of its customer accounts were

attacks was discovered and Warby Parker alerted law enforcement. The retailer
stated that unauthorized parties obtained the usernames and passwords from
unrelated breaches at other companies.
The company contacted customers that may have been impacted and required them to
change their passwords. Warby Parker stated that there is no indication that the
attacks were successful in allowing unauthorized access to payment card
information.

Online fraud hits larger e‑retailers harder than
smaller ones
Fraud attempts—both successful and unsuccessful—have risen over the past year,
according to the recently released “2018 LexisNexis True Cost of Fraud” report.
And midsized to large e-commerce retailers with more than $10 million in annual
revenue were hit harder than smaller retailers earning less than $10 million a
year in sales.
Larger retailers reported a total of 1,525 fraudulent attempts per month, up 43%
from 1,068 a year earlier. 572 of those attempts were successful and 953 were
prevented. Smaller players, meanwhile, reported an average of 249 fraud attempts
per month in 2018, up 11% from 225 a year earlier. 67 attempts were successful
while 182 were prevented.
The cost of fraud for midsized to large merchants at $3.20 for every $1 of fraud
is also higher than for smaller merchants that pay $2.32 for every $1 of fraud.
Last year the cost of fraud for large merchants was slightly more at $3.37 per
dollar of fraud. Smaller merchants paid slightly more for fraud last year as
well at $2.38 per dollar of fraud. LexisNexis defines the cost of fraud as the
total amount of costs related to fees, interest, merchandise replacement and
redistribution per dollar of fraud for which the merchant is held liable.
