Introducing Signal: Closing the Loop Between Analytics and Action

Finding exceptions isn't the hard part anymore. Your analytics platform surfaces price overrides, no-receipt returns and stacked discounts every day. The problem is arithmetic: one loss prevention manager, 40 stores, a few hundred flags a week. Most of those flags go stale before anyone looks at them. The person who could close one in 30 seconds is the store manager who knows the cashier, the shift and the customer, and that person usually never sees it.

Introducing Signal, a new capability of Agilence Analytics, built to get flagged activity into the hands of someone who can act on it quickly. In this session,
Keneavy Krenzin, Vice President of Product Management at Agilence, and Colin Latch, Product Marketing Manager at Agilence, will walk through how Signal gives store, district, and regional managers a focused queue of only the flagged transactions for the locations they own, with the receipt detail and video footage they need to make an educated decision in just a few minutes.

The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact

Retail Crime's Repeat Offender Problem
Auror reported that more than 3 million events have been linked to repeat offenders worldwide through its network.

10% of Offenders Responsible for 70% of Retail Crime Loss and Harm, Auror Data Shows

New findings highlight the growing importance of collaboration, intelligence-sharing and technology in combating organized retail crime.

A relatively small group of repeat offenders is responsible for a disproportionate share of retail crime, according to new data released by Auror following its North America Network Summit in Denver on October 15.

Retailers using the Auror platform reported that the top 10% of offenders account for 70% of external loss and harm in their stores globally, underscoring the importance of identifying and disrupting repeat offenders rather than treating every retail crime incident as an isolated event.

The findings were shared as major U.S. and Canadian retailers gathered to discuss retail crime challenges and opportunities for greater collaboration over the next 12 months.

Over the past five years, North American retailers have recorded approximately 11.6 million retail crime events through Auror's platform. That reporting has helped identify 18,000 repeat offenders operating across multiple organizations, illustrating how shared intelligence can reveal patterns that individual retailers might otherwise miss.

Auror also reported that more than 3 million events have been linked to repeat offenders worldwide through its network, which includes more than 62,000 stores across North America.

The figures highlight a growing emphasis within loss prevention on connecting incidents, identifying repeat offenders and building stronger cases that can support investigations and law enforcement partnerships.

Technology is also helping streamline the reporting process. According to Auror, some major retailers have reduced average crime reporting times to just six minutes, potentially allowing store teams to document incidents more efficiently while maintaining their focus on daily operations and safety.

"Tackling organized retail crime syndicates requires retailers, law enforcement and industry partners to all come together as a united network," said Jon Briegel, Auror's Global Director of Solution Engineering.

The broader takeaway for the retail industry is that effective crime prevention increasingly depends on what happens beyond an individual store's walls. Connecting information across locations and organizations can help investigators recognize patterns, prioritize high-impact offenders and develop a more coordinated response to retail crime.

As retailers confront persistent theft, violence and organized criminal activity, collaboration and actionable intelligence remain central to protecting employees, customers and merchandise.

Theft & ORC Driving Retail Loss
IHL Group: The biggest source of retail loss is…
A new joint study from IHL Group and Sensormatic Solutions reveals where retail losses occur and how much money retailers are losing.

External theft and organized retail crime is the largest individual source of retail loss (25%), but “Beyond Shrink: 2026 Global Total Retail Loss Study” from IHL Group and Sensormatic Solutions also indicates that while it accounts for 26% of total loss among retailers generating $1 billion or more in revenue, for retailers with revenue under $250 million it drops to 17%.

In a related external theft/organized retail crime finding, the study shows that 71% of the largest surveyed retailers reported seeing increased shoplifting, compared with just 28% of the smallest retailers. And looking at internal loss, the study indicates administrative process errors cost an average of $103.40 per incident, close to the $107 average cost of an employee theft occurrence.

Return fraud increased for 68% of respondents, nearly matching the 69% overall reporting increased shoplifting in their retail locations. Even so, respondents ranked fraud prevention only fifth-most-important when prioritizing loss-related performance measures. Supplier fraud, warehouse/sales-area shrink and goods-receiving loss together account for 33% of total respondent losses.

Australia reported the highest rate of organized retail crime growth in the study, with 80% of respondents reporting increases, while 71% of U.S. respondents and 67% of Spanish respondents also reported rising activity in this area, which IHL and Sensormatic analysis indicates is the fact organized retail crime is now an international challenge.

The average loss prevention budget reported in the study is about 1.2% of sales, but respondents reporting spending above 2% of sales were the only cohort in the study to report more declines than increases across loss vectors. In addition, respondents that align staffing and monitoring to traffic patterns report better loss outcomes, with 91% citing peak traffic periods and 89% citing event-driven crowd surges as key drivers of loss. chainstoreage.com

Crime Stoppers Paused in Toronto
Toronto Crime Stoppers pauses program after CBC investigation reveals details of data leak
Toronto Crime Stoppers is pausing its program, effective immediately, said its chair, Sean Sportun, in a statement sent late Wednesday evening.

The news follows an exclusive CBC investigation from earlier in the day revealing that information from more than 1.5 million tips submitted to Canadian Crime Stoppers programs over the last 25 years was exposed in a massive data breach.

It was the first time precise figures were made public showing the severity of the information exposed, as well as how many Canadian tipsters were compromised.

Toronto Crime Stoppers now says it has removed the "Tip Submit” feature from its website and will no longer accept or process any new information intended for the program. It has also advised Navigate360 to immediately suspend the intake function for the Toronto Crime Stoppers chapter from its platform.

In the statement, the organization advised the public not to send tips by phone, online or through its app "until we have a safer way to protect you." cbc.ca

Low Level Arrests Surge As Violent Crime Falls
2025 policing trend: Fewer serious crimes, more minor arrests
Arrests for low-level crimes, including vagrancy and drug possession, rose in the U.S. from 2024 to 2025 even as rates of violent crime including homicide plummeted to historic national lows, according to a new analysis of federal data from the criminal justice and immigration reforms advocacy group FWD.us.

The report analyzes publicly available FBI and immigration arrest data and does not include details of whether charges were dropped or if people served any time in jail or prison.

Four states, California, Hawaii, Nevada and Arizona, accounted for over half the increase in vagrancy arrests, according to the report. The legal definition of vagrancy is "roaming from place to place without a permanent job, home, or material resources."  npr.org

Moving Beyond Compliance-Based Safety Training
Retail Safety Training Is Shifting From Compliance to Preparedness

By the D&D Daily staff

As retailers navigate changing store environments, loss prevention and asset protection teams have an opportunity to strengthen workplace safety through practical training, employee engagement and proactive risk management.

For years, workplace safety training in retail has often centered on compliance requirements, annual refreshers and standardized procedures. While those elements remain important, retailers are increasingly recognizing the value of preparing employees to respond confidently to everyday situations that can create safety risks.

From slips and falls to equipment handling, emergency evacuations and crowded sales floors, retail employees encounter potential hazards throughout their shifts. Addressing those risks requires more than distributing safety manuals or completing online training modules.

One approach is incorporating short, scenario-based exercises into regular store operations. Rather than relying exclusively on lengthy training sessions, managers can use brief discussions during team meetings to reinforce safe practices and review how employees should respond to specific situations.

For loss prevention and asset protection professionals, this creates an opportunity to expand their influence beyond traditional security responsibilities.

LP/AP teams often have visibility into incident reports, operational vulnerabilities and recurring safety concerns across multiple locations. That information can help identify where additional training, clearer procedures or changes to store operations may be necessary.

Employee participation is another important consideration. Workers who feel comfortable reporting hazards, near misses and unsafe conditions can provide valuable information before an incident results in an injury.

However, reporting systems are only effective when employees believe their concerns will be taken seriously. Store leadership must demonstrate that safety feedback leads to meaningful action rather than simply additional paperwork.

Technology can also support these efforts. Digital reporting platforms, mobile training tools and centralized incident management systems can help retailers identify patterns, document corrective actions and deliver consistent guidance across locations.

Ultimately, effective workplace safety programs depend on consistency. Training must be reinforced, procedures should be reviewed regularly and employees need opportunities to practice what they have learned.

For retail LP/AP leaders, the goal is not simply to document compliance. It is to help create a workplace where employees recognize risks, communicate concerns and make safer decisions throughout the workday.

Retail’s Untapped Frontline Talent Pipeline
Why Is the Frontline Stuck at the Counter?
An Urban Institute analysis of federal survey data found that more than 60 percent of American workers held a frontline retail job early in their careers. This past July, 3.7 million people between 16 and 24 were working in retail.

In my class of 40 students, 31 had worked in retail, but only five were planning to pursue a retail career. I’ve seen the same pattern over two years. After three decades in the industry, it doesn’t surprise me. The entry-level jobs they held were designed to show them a task; it was never designed to show them the business.

That should give retail leaders something to sit with. Retail sales associates outnumber retail first-line supervisors and managers by approximately 255.87 percent based on U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics. The person you hope to recruit after graduation may already be working for you, and much of what they believe about a retail career has been shaped on the sales floor.

What have they been able to see from there?

My answer is that what people believe about a retail career often isn’t a failure of the industry’s marketing. It can be a reasonable conclusion drawn from the part of the business they’ve been shown. Employees form their opinion of a retail career from the decisions they watch their employer make.

How we handle their questions, whether we back their judgment, and what happens when something goes wrong is the only career story they experience.

When was the last time you took your sales associates through retail complexity hidden in plain sight? Take a product sitting on a shelf. Someone decided to sell it, negotiated its cost, forecast demand, allocated inventory, and set a price. Other people worked out how to promote it, present it, and get it to the customer, whether that meant a truck, stockroom, or pickup locker. What looks like a simple purchase brings together finance, merchandising, operations, technology, and a fair amount of human judgment. therobinreport.com

Gatekeeper's SmartWheel Takes On
the Rising Cost of Cart Loss

For years, cart loss was something stores handled in the parking lot. A few carts went missing, someone ran a retrieval truck now and then, and the replacement cost got absorbed into the operating budget. That approach is getting harder to justify.

A cart that leaves the property is often gone for good, and replacing a few units at a time is a steady, avoidable expense. Fewer carts on hand also means a tougher experience for customers during busy periods, which can lead to lower sales and a bad customer experience.

One solution to avoid this pattern is Gatekeeper Systems CartControl, a containment system built around SmartWheel technology. Retailers set a perimeter, such as the edge of the parking lot or the inside of the building, and CartControl stops carts from crossing it. Shoppers don’t notice the system working, and the store doesn’t lose the cart.

The benefits go beyond the cost of the carts themselves:

  • Lower operating costs: Fewer carts to replace and repair, and less money spent on retrieval services. It also helps retailers avoid municipal fines and citations.

  • Better shopper experience: More carts in the corral means more customers start their trip the way the store intended.

  • Brand and community: Abandoned carts in neighborhoods reflect on the retailer. Keeping them on-site protects its reputation in the community.

  • Sustainability and food safety: Fewer discarded carts means less waste, and carts that stay on the property have less contact with outside contaminants.

For loss prevention leaders, cart containment now touches several priorities at once: protecting physical assets, supporting the customer experience, maintaining community relationships, and staying ahead of local ordinances.

This video shows how quickly a single lost cart turns into a bigger problem.

Retail Websites Face Cyber Threats
Critical PHP flaw puts retail websites and e-commerce systems on alert

AI-discovered PHP flaws threaten retail and e-commerce sites, including Magento and WooCommerce.

Retailers are being urged to update their web infrastructure immediately following the disclosure of two critical vulnerabilities affecting PHP, the technology underpinning widely used e-commerce and website platforms, including Magento, WooCommerce and WordPress.

The vulnerabilities, collectively known as PHP2Shell, could allow an unauthenticated attacker to execute code on an affected web server, potentially giving hackers access to websites and sensitive information stored in server memory. The PHP development team rated the vulnerabilities as critical and said updating affected systems is the only safe option.

The threat matters most for retailers because PHP powers many e-commerce sites and other customer-facing web applications. E-commerce cybersecurity firm Sansec said that Magento, WooCommerce, and Shopware stores are among the potentially affected systems.

Unlike a vulnerability in an e-commerce platform or plug-in, PHP2Shell resides in PHP itself. That means retailers cannot necessarily address the threat by simply updating their storefront software. Businesses that outsource their web infrastructure may instead rely on hosting, cloud, or technology providers to deploy the necessary PHP updates.

Researchers at the cybersecurity company Wiz demonstrated unauthenticated remote code execution against WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla environments. However, because the vulnerabilities are in PHP rather than the applications, exploitation doesn’t require a specific content management system.

Researchers say a successful attack could also expose information stored in PHP process memory, potentially including passwords, authentication tokens, API keys, and certificates. massmarketretailers.com

Legitimate Platforms Deliver Malicious Emails
Attackers abuse legitimate platforms to deliver phishing emails that pass authentication checks
Over the past year, Cisco Talos says, attackers have abused more than 25 legitimate platforms, spanning collaboration, file-sharing, survey, payment and AI services. The attackers feed these platforms hostile input and let them do the delivery.

In two campaigns totaling roughly 1,400 messages, attackers abused Staples and Dell transactional mail. They planted fake support numbers in the billing and shipping fields of high-value order confirmations (an iPad, in the Staples case). The goal isn’t a click but a phone call, which moves the victim off email entirely.

List bombing is a traditional denial-of-service or distraction tactic that, in a subset of cases, is being repurposed to deliver malicious content. The attacker submits victims’ email addresses to legitimate registration, subscription or notification workflows, and the victims are bombarded with automated confirmation emails.

Some of them, as Cisco researchers noted, carry a lure typed into the name, company, or title field of a poorly validated form. The platform’s welcome email then delivers it, making it look like official platform mail. helpnetsecurity.com

AI Agents Evade Oversight
OpenAI’s coding agents talked themselves out of being monitored
Two AI coding agents running inside OpenAI silently weakened the systems built to catch AI misbehavior, and one of them then told its human operator it had done no such thing.

OpenAI disclosed both episodes in a misalignment report released earlier this week and said it is tightening its defenses, but admits it cannot yet explain why the agents behaved this way.

AI agents evading oversight

Neither agent was attacking anything. The models involved, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra, were doing ordinary engineering work. In both cases, the agent paused to ask itself whether the safety monitor should stay on, and in both it talked itself into switching it off.

The company said these incidents were not isolated. It has seen several cases where an agent launched a new deployment with monitoring turned off. The agent itself stayed under watch, but whatever it spun up did not.

“These cases exposed a gap in how we enforce monitoring requirements on the workloads that our agents launch,” OpenAI noted, and confirmed it’s working on closing it. helpnetsecurity.com

Amazon Rape Allegation
Amazon employee accuses senior executive of raping her on NYC business trip, claims company failed to perform full investigation

Laura Danbom alleged that she was raped by a senior executive during a business trip to New York City. She also claimed that the company told her to keep quiet.

An Amazon employee has alleged that she was raped by a senior executive during a business trip to New York City. She also claimed in a lawsuit that the company told her to keep quiet about the alleged incident and even neglected to perform a full investigation of the allegations.

The alleged victim, Laura Danbom, works at Amazon’s Seattle headquarters as a marketing and operations manager for Amazon Web Services. This week, she sued the e-commerce giant for allegedly subjecting her to a hostile work environment and violating Washington State’s Silenced No More Act, per the New York Post. The act protects victims who speak up about workplace assaults from retaliation.

The alleged rape happened on October 27, 2023. At the time, Danbom had traveled to New York with a group of colleagues including Michelangelo Simonte, who is a top-performing advertising executive in her division. He was based in Madrid, according to the complaint. Simonte still works for Amazon at its Madrid offices.

The group went to an Amazon-hosted open bar event that evening, and then continued the gathering at karaoke bars. The suit filed in state court in Seattle revealed that all of it was paid for by Amazon.

That evening, initially, Danbom and Simonte “flirted,” “joked” and “got along,” according to the complaint. Later in the night, Simonte “kissed her,” and “persuaded Laura” to let him accompany her to her hotel room, per the complaint.

“In Laura’s hotel room, during the early morning hours, Simonte raped her,” the complaint alleged. “Before the rape started, she said no. During the rape, Laura asked him: ‘you realize this is,’ and Simonte finished her sentence saying ‘rape? Yes.’ He ignored her protests. He raped her.”  hindustantimes.com

Peoria, AZ: 6 arrested in $1.4M Walmart fraud scheme shipping goods from Peoria to Vietnam
What started with a Walmart driver’s tip about dozens of packages piling up at a Peoria home led investigators to a $1.2 million fraud scheme stretching from the Valley to Southeast Asia. The Walmart driver told police on Aug. 22 that he’d delivered 30 to 50 packages under different names to the same home in just a couple of days. Days later, a victim reported their Walmart account had been hacked and used to buy items. Those two reports sparked a two-month investigation that ended Thursday morning with six arrests, according to newly released court documents. Investigators say the group placed about 15,500 orders on Walmart.com using hacked customer accounts and stolen credit and debit card numbers. They reportedly altered delivery addresses to get around fraud alerts. Police linked 11,364 orders worth more than $768,000 to six drop houses in Mesa, Avondale, Glendale and Peoria, according to court paperwork. In total, investigators put the fraud at about $1.23 million. The merchandise was reportedly funneled through two boba shops in Peoria and Tolleson, before being driven to California to be shipped to Vietnam in containers through U.S. Cargo Shipping LLC. So far, police say Walmart has confirmed $57,501 in chargeback losses tied to two victims, and JPMorgan Chase confirmed 203 customers with $8,821 in unauthorized purchases.  azfamily.com

Shootings & Deaths

Glendale, AZ: Man shot, killed by Loss Prevention employee outside Glendale Beauty Supply store
Police say a confrontation led to a loss prevention worker shooting and killing an armed man at a Glendale shopping center Wednesday evening. It happened around 5 p.m. outside of a beauty supply store near 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road. Police say a 32-year-old man was working as loss prevention at the store when he confronted Edgar Perez Lopez, 33, and Lopez’s girlfriend, who were reportedly smoking pills. The employee told the couple to leave, leading to a confrontation between the three. Investigators believe Lopez reached for a firearm, and the employee shot him. Lopez was rushed to the hospital and later died. Authorities say Lopez had a 9mm handgun and also recovered suspected drugs at the crime scene. Investigators initially said the employee was in custody, but it’s unclear if he will be charged. The employee’s “actions remain under investigation, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting will be evaluated as part of the investigative process,” Glendale police said in a statement. Police are gathering additional details about the confrontation and are working to determine whether Lopez had the gun in his hand when he was shot.  azfamily.com

The officer exited the car and approached the man on foot, but the man fled, and the officer pursued him. Chief of Patrol for the Baltimore Police Department, Ryan Lee, reported that a man pulled out a firearm and pointed it at an officer, prompting the officer to fire multiple rounds and strike the individual. Officers then arrived on the scene to provide aid to the man, who was then taken to a nearby hospital, where he is currently in critical condition. foxbaltimore.com

Feds charge driver in alleged $12M cargo theft scheme built on hijacked carrier identities
Federal prosecutors have uncovered an alleged cargo theft conspiracy involving at least 24 freight shipments and millions in stolen merchandise. Investigators say suspects took control of established trucking companies and used their identities to secure legitimate freight contracts. Drivers then collected shipments from distribution facilities, but the cargo never reached its intended destinations. Authorities estimate that thefts involving one defendant exceeded $12 million in retail value. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut announced federal charges against Nursulton Khaydarov on October 21. Khaydarov, 33, is a citizen of Uzbekistan and lawful permanent resident of the United States.
