As retailers nationwide continue grappling with theft and organized retail crime, hardware and home improvement chains are adapting their prevention strategies to fit the unique challenges of their store formats and product lines.

Tools, power equipment, and building materials remain among the most at-risk categories. Compact, high-value items such as cordless drills, saws, and tool batteries are especially vulnerable due to their ease of concealment and strong resale demand. Larger products, from copper wiring to plumbing supplies, also pose security risks because of their consistent market value.

To address these issues, many retailers are adopting layered approaches. Some have introduced locked displays and point-of-sale activation for tool batteries and select equipment. Others are adjusting store layouts to improve visibility and adding staff in high-risk sections. Surveillance systems, RFID tagging, and expanded security personnel are also being deployed more frequently.

Manufacturers are working with retailers on new packaging and anti-theft technology, including bulkier tool cases and tracking chips, designed to deter theft without creating excessive friction for legitimate customers.

Still, retailers must balance tighter controls with the customer experience. Home improvement stores, in particular, serve contractors and do-it-yourself customers who expect hands-on access to merchandise. Retailers report they are experimenting with different strategies to secure high-value goods while keeping the shopping experience practical and accessible.

Industry experts note that collaboration with law enforcement and information-sharing between retailers remains a cornerstone of combating theft. By focusing on prevention technology, staff training, and cooperative initiatives, hardware and home improvement stores are working to stay ahead of an evolving challenge.

Employers need to be aware that the U.S. Department of Justice has issued a detailed guidance memorandum about employer diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies that it believes violate policies laid out in a series of executive orders issued by President Trump since taking office in January.

There is nothing new about the Trump Administration’s anti-DEI policy stance, which was made crystal clear during his presidential campaign and in the executive orders he began issuing as soon as he was sworn in. It has been made clear that DEI efforts aimed at establishing privileges for certain groups at the expense of others will not be tolerated.

In introducing the new advice memorandum, Attorney General Pam Bondi states: “In recent years, the federal government has turned a blind eye toward, or even encouraged, various discriminatory practices, seemingly because of their purportedly benign labels, objectives or intentions. No longer.”

The memo is divided into two separate sets of requirements laid out for those employers who are the recipients of federal funds and another set for all other employers. And the policy has teeth. The two retail giants are capitalizing on sustained investment in their technology foundations even as they face economic headwinds.

Amid challenging economic conditions and swirling trade war concerns, the world’s biggest retailers continue to double down on AI.

Walmart and Target expanded AI initiatives and touted potential benefits during their latest earnings calls. Both companies are capitalizing on sustained investment in their respective technology foundations as adoption unfolds.

“Our enthusiasm for how AI can help us serve customers and members better, improve the experience for our associates and increase productivity continues to grow,” Walmart President and CEO Doug McMillon said during the call Thursday.

Earlier this summer, Walmart expanded its AI leadership and introduced a streamlined agentic strategy that focused on four “super agents.” McMillon said it has been years since the company has made a structural change for a role reporting to the CEO, but Walmart went this route to accelerate its efforts.

The retailer plans to continue developing its AI agent strategy as it looks to upgrade its customer-facing AI assistant Sparky as well as improve employee workflows.

“The updates and additions included in this document will better position Federal Government agencies and other SBOM consumers to address a range of use cases, understand the generation process, and improve data quality,” CISA said in the new publication, which it released on Thursday.

Many organizations are vulnerable to cyberattacks because they use software with flaws that they aren’t aware of, due to the complexity of the code. Some cyber experts see SBOMs as an important tool for illuminating the contents of software and helping users address vulnerabilities. To mitigate these threats and help ensure public safety, agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center (IPR Center), work alongside federal, state and local law enforcement partners across the country to dismantle counterfeit operations and hold individuals involved in them accountable.

“Counterfeit products not only attack the name and value of a known business, but, in many cases, can cause harmful, and sometimes fatal, consequences for the unsuspecting buyer,” said Mark Zito, Deputy Special Agent in Charge for HSI Los Angeles. “These fakes have no place in a fair, legitimate marketplace. The public should be assured that HSI is committed to targeting the unscrupulous vendors of substandard merchandise year-round. They are the ones who may pay the steep price.”

Operations to combat the manufacture and distribution of counterfeit goods help ensure public safety and national security by preventing dangerous and harmful goods from entering the market and promoting the integrity of legitimate trade systems.

"Law enforcement has identified a trend of counterfeited products that is growing at an alarming rate," said Steve Francis, Assistant Director for HSI’s Global Trade Investigations Division and Director of the IPR Center. "At best, these products will not perform as well as authentic products. At worst, they can fail catastrophically.”

Some of the most dangerous counterfeit products involve automotive parts, electronics, safety equipment, prescription drugs, and cosmetics due to the potential threats they present to public safety and public health. ice.gov

Chicago, IL: 10 thieves steal nearly $130K in Louis Vuitton merchandise at River North store
A group of about 10 thieves made away with nearly $130,000 in Louis Vuitton merchandise from a Nordstrom store in River North Sunday evening. About 6 p.m. the thieves, wearing all black with face coverings and gloves, exited three different cars and tried to enter the Nordstrom at 55 E. Grand Ave., according to police reports obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times. A security guard tried to stop them by pulling the doors shut, but the struggle caused the exterior handles to break, causing about $5,000 in damages, according to a police report. The group then made its way to the second floor and through the open doors to the Louis Vuitton section where they took $129,770 in clothes and purses, according to the report. The thieves then fled in the vehicles — a black Kia, gray Acura and black Infiniti, officials said. nbcchicago.com

Man arrested, believed to be part of a $400,000 organized criminal ring that targets gas pumps with skimmers across Texas
Law enforcement has arrested multiple people, including an Austin man in Midland, who is allegedly a part of gas pump skimming schemes that span throughout the State of Texas. The multiple incidents reported in an arrest affidavit, which include cities like Midland, Odessa, New Braunfels, Houston, Kermit and Pflugerville, date back to May 2023. Yosbel Alonso Ayala, 30, listed in Midland County jail records as living out of Austin, is the only known suspect at this time. NewsWest 9 is working to find out information about the other suspects linked to the case. Ayala is tied to gas pump card skimming schemes in New Braunfels and a package flagged in Houston that allegedly carried suspected narcotics and contraband related to gas pump skimming, according to the affidavit. wfaa.com

Mobile, AL: Lululemon store one of at least 3 stores targeted by smash-and-grab burglars
Mobile is one of at least three cities where smash-and-grab burglars have targeted Lululemon stores, News 5 has learned. The Mobile location, in Legacy Village shopping center, is open today, despite the boarded-up damage. Saturday morning, police discovered a vehicle had struck the building. Officers learned that whoever was behind the crash then stole merchandise from the store. An employee told News 5 that about $25,000 worth of items were taken from the location. Similar crimes have happened in the past week in Atlanta and Greenville, South Carolina. wkrg.com

Cleveland, OH: Adults used kids in string of Westlake beauty store thefts
At least five Westlake beauty store thefts are being connected to an Akron couple who were using small kids as distractions to help them steal thousands in goods. According to Westlake Police, a 34 year-old woman from Akron and 35 year-old Durrell McDowell, also of Akron, were charged with felony theft after being arrested last week following an investigation. Police were called on July 24 to the Sephora in Westlake after a woman was suspected of stealing $1,500 in goods from the beauty store. The suspect, who was working with another customer, filled a large purse with products from designer brands like Gucci, Dior and YSL. According to police the theft took place as 2-3 kids were running around the store, appearing to be distractions or lookouts. The next week, an Ulta Beauty employee called police to report multiple thefts on July 24 and 30. The Westlake location also had evidence that a man and a woman worked together to steal products, with children running around to distract employees. Westlake Police obtained warrants for both, and on August 16, a detective spotted their car driving directly to the Westlake Ulta. Officers arrived on scene and arrested the woman as she was exiting the store, walking to a running car with stolen items. The man identified as McDowell was arrested as he walked out of the store moments later. In the car at the time were four children ages 7, 9, 15 and 16. cleveland19.com

Miami, FL: Update: Accused gunman arrested in Coconut Grove food store murder
Miami police arrested the accused gunman on Friday in an early-August murder at a food store in the city’s Coconut Grove neighborhood. Police said Keith Leebrooks Wilson, 33, of Coral Gables, shot and killed 30-year-old Robert Denardes Whittle Jr. at Ike’s Food Center, located at 3374 Douglas Road. According to an arrest warrant, police were alerted to the Aug. 6 shooting after receiving a ShotSpotter alert just before 6:30 p.m. and responding officers found Whittle with multiple gunshot wounds. Doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital pronounced him dead about an hour later. local10.com

Canoga Park, CA: Update: Man charged with attempted murder in AR 15 and stabbing attack at Canoga Park mall
A 29-year-old man accused of firing rounds from a high-powered rifle before stabbing a woman at the Westfield Topanga Mall in Canoga Park was charged Monday with attempted murder and other crimes. Shayne Suffern also was charged with kidnapping and possession of an assault weapon in the terrifying attack outside a Cheesecake Factory at the west San Fernando Valley mall. Suffern was carrying an AR-15 rifle, 200 rounds of ammunition and 13 fully loaded 40-round magazines, according to investigators. No one was struck by gunfire. A woman was stabbed in what investigators said appeared to be a random attack. Suffern was expected to be arraigned Monday in Van Nuys. The LAPD said Suffern had a prior case involving the negligent discharge of a firearm in public. According to LA Superior Court records, he faced charges in February 2023 of willful discharge of a firearm and possession of an assault weapon. In October 2024 he was sentenced to two years of mental health diversion, with a condition prohibiting him from owning or possessing any dangerous or deadly weapons. He previously had a hearing for this case scheduled in January 2026. nbclosangeles.com

Montrose County, CO: Grand Junction shooting suspect nabbed in Montrose
A man suspected in a Grand Junction shooting was arrested in Montrose Sunday morning on Marine Road. Arthur Lucas, 45, was detained for the Grand Junction Police Department and is suspected of first-degree assault and illegal discharge of a firearm, according to the GJPD. According to that agency’s Monday news release, the Grand Junction investigation began Saturday night, when officers responded to the Sprouts grocery store parking lot on Independent Avenue upon multiple calls that people there were breaking out car windows and that a gun might be involved. Several vehicles fled the scene. Officers soon contacted one of the vehicles in the Sam’s Club parking lot, where they found a man who had been shot. He was taken to the hospital with a severe injury. During this, another vehicle that matched the description of one that had fled the area was reported to 911 as a possible drunken driver. Officers located it at the Mesa Mall, and pursued it when the driver did not stop. It crashed, leaving two with minor injuries. Through further investigation the GJPD determined the people in this vehicle were not responsible for the shooting, although they arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of felony menacing, attempted vehicular assault, felony vehicular eluding, and other offenses. Sunday, the GJPD, with the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office and Montrose Police Department responded to the 14000 block of Marine Road. Montrose County Sheriff Gene Lillard said they served a search warrant and detained a person, whom the GJPD on Monday identified as Lucas. gjsentinel.com

St Louis, MO: Man sought by police for shooting into Price-Chopper store
Police are asking for help in finding a man who shot a store on the 2700 block of Goodfellow Boulevard on Aug. 20. At around 9:40 a.m., officers were called due to an ongoing shooting at the Price Chopper store. A preliminary investigation determined that an unidentified man approached the store’s register, where the employee asked him to remove his mask. The man refused to remove his mask and the employee refused to serve him. The man left the store angry after being refused service and fired gunshots at the store after leaving. City leaders announced the arrest of 10 members of a major burglary crew tied to at least 92 burglaries in the city of Los Angeles. Mayor Karen Bass, Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell and District Attorney Nathan Hochman made the announcement at a press conference on Monday morning. "Today, Angelenos can be proud of the extraordinary work of the LAPD and our regional partners," Bass said. "This crew, which had victimized families and businesses, is no longer a threat to our neighborhoods." According to McDonnell, law enforcement agencies across the region served multiple simultaneous search warrants around 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at eight residences across L.A., Hawthorne, Inglewood and Carson -- targeting the prolific so-called "Rich Rollin'" burglary crew.
