Beauty supply stores have quietly become a prime target for retail
crime — and the spike in theft and violence is raising alarms across
the industry.
These stores often carry small, high-value
items with strong resale potential: human hair extensions,
flat irons, brand-name cosmetics, and skincare products. In many cases,
a single shoplifter can grab hundreds or even thousands in merchandise
in seconds.
But it's not just about the merchandise. Many beauty supply stores
are independent or immigrant-owned, often operating with limited staff
and minimal security infrastructure. That makes them especially
vulnerable — not just to theft, but to violent confrontations.
Some incidents have turned tragic. Reports of clerks being shoved,
punched, or worse during theft attempts are becoming more common,
and certain stores are being hit repeatedly by the same crews — often
linked to organized fencing operations.

Property Crime Plummets 21% in Bay
Area
Crime fell in nearly every major Bay Area city, except these places
Nearly all of the Bay Area’s most populous cities saw decreases in
reported crime last year, a Chronicle analysis of new state data
found, in keeping with nationwide trends in 2024.
 Excluding
San Jose, which did not report complete data for 2023, violent crime
fell by about 5% between 2023 and 2024 across the Bay Area’s 15 most
populous cities. Reported property crime fell
by about 21%, according to a Chronicle analysis of data
submitted by local law enforcement agencies to the California Department
of Justice.
The decreases mirror nationwide drops in crime, which criminologists
have attributed in part to a return to normalcy after the social
upheaval brought by the pandemic.
San Francisco and Oakland saw the largest decreases in reported
property crime. San Francisco’s decrease came largely from a dropoff
in larceny theft — a decline driven by the city’s crackdown on car
break-ins.
But in Oakland, the decrease comes only after a significant increase
in reported property crime in 2023, according to data the department
submitted to the state. The 2024 numbers remained higher than in any
other year in at least the last decade.

New grant links Bend retailers’ security cameras to police in real time
The Bend Police Department and Deschutes County District Attorney’s
Office announced a new grant for local retailers they say can help
combat organized retail theft Tuesday. Up to 10 Bend retailers can
receive package to links their security cameras to the Bend Connect
system.

The Bend Police Department, in partnership with the Deschutes County
District Attorney’s Office, is accepting applications for the Organized
Retail Theft (ORT) Bend Connect Integration Grant — a new opportunity
for local retailers to join the fight against organized retail theft.
Funded through the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission’s ORT Grant
Program, this initiative offers ten Bend retailers a chance to
receive a FususCore Device Bundle, which will connect existing security
cameras to the Bend Connect system.
Adding a FususCore to security cameras allows conditional access by
Bend Police to integrated camera feeds during a theft, investigation
or emergency near the participating retailer, increasing the ability to
respond in real time and investigate effectively.

NYC Mayor Adams wants its own mask ban — with jail time for repeat
offenders
Mayor Eric Adams wants to bypass Albany and create New York City’s own
mask ban that would come with jail time for
repeat offenders, The Post has learned.
The potential mask ban – which comes during a growing push by many
conservatives and Jewish groups to crack down on menacing masked
anti-Israel protesters – is expected to be announced as soon as
Wednesday, sources said.
Many details remain unclear, but a City Hall source said Adams will
propose a ban that would make violations a misdemeanor – a move that
wouldn’t require approval from Empire State lawmakers, who already
passed a watered-down mask restriction in the state’s recent budget.
But the ban — which is being pushed by First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro —
has left others in Adams’ administration and across the hall in the City
Council scratching their heads on how it could even get done.
“There is already legislation addressing this issue that the mayor
had absolutely nothing to do with,” one council source said. “Now,
instead of engaging the council like a competent leader would, he’s
floating a new proposal with no sponsor, no support, and no path
forward.”

Dollar Tree’s new customers spell bad news for all of us
Dollar Tree's new customer base means the economy may be in
trouble.

you think of Dollar Tree customers, most people don't necessarily think
of the country's highest earners crowding the discount store's aisles in
search of low-cost food, beauty, or household items. Recent data
suggests that's exactly what's happening, however.
In fact, PYMNTS Intelligence data has demonstrated that while households
earning $100K or more each year still spend a lot of money at Walmart,
Target, and other big-box stores, people within this demographic
group are also making more purchases at both Dollar Tree and similar
stores like Dollar General.
Although it might be nice to believe that the country's top earners
simply decided that Dollar Tree's deals were too good to pass up, the
more likely explanation for their new-found frugality is that people
in households with incomes above $100K are facing financial struggles
that have forced them to seek out cheaper places to shop.
This explanation is supported by additional data from PYMNTS that found
around half of consumers with incomes of $100K or more are living
paycheck to paycheck right now.

Are Costco’s Lululemon Dupes Counterfeit?
An article on Marketplace said proving design patents have been violated
is difficult because the matter is often subjective. The article stated,
“Is a Ford Bronco a dupe of a Jeep? Is Pepsi a dupe of Coke? Where
does inspiration end and imitation begin?”
Christopher Durham, president of the Velocity Institute, a consulting
firm focused on private label strategy, told Marketplace that
copycats lead to more options and lower prices for consumers while
often inspiring the next trend.
He said, “If you look across all of retail, 95% of all things are
duplicates, 5% are innovation.”
Elizabeth Dipchand, an intellectual property lawyer and managing partner
of Dipchand LLP, nonetheless told CBC that while lookalike product has
been around for decades, the expanding market for dupes could lead other
premium brands to file similar lawsuits.
She said, “[Costco is not a] counterfeit manufacturer from overseas that
trickles in counterfeit bags and… shoes and all sorts of other goods.
This is a very well-known multinational with significant bricks and
mortar affecting the bottom line of another very, very well-known higher
end and higher priced company.”

T-Mobile scraps DEI programs while seeking crucial FCC approval for
major business deals
Company joins Amazon, Walmart and others responding to pressure
from Trump administration on DEI initiatives
T-Mobile informed the head of the Federal Communications Commission
(FCC) that the wireless company will end its diversity, equity and
inclusion (DEI) programs while it awaits approval from the agency on
two key business deals.
In a letter to FCC Chair Brendan Carr, which was made public Wednesday,
T-Mobile said it will no longer have specific roles or teams focused
on DEI. Instead, those employees will be redirected within Human
Resources to focus on employee culture and engagement.
It also said it is removing any references to DEI on its websites
and will ensure that company websites and future communications do not
have any references to DEI.
"We recognize that the legal and policy landscape surrounding DEI
under federal law has changed and we remain fully committed to
ensuring that T-Mobile does not have any policies or practices that
enable invidious discrimination, whether in fulfillment of DEI or any
other purpose," the company said in the letter.

UK Retail Head Calls for Cyberattack
Disclosure Requirement
M&S chairman calls for mandatory disclosure of material cyberattacks
The chairman testified before British lawmakers following a major
social-engineering attack on the department-store chain.
The chairman of Marks & Spencer, the British department-store chain
targeted by hackers in an April social-engineering attack, said Tuesday
that the British government should require companies to report major
cyberattacks.
M&S chairman Archie Norman told a House of Commons subcommittee that
two major U.K. companies may have been attacked over the past four
months but have yet to publicly confirm the incidents.
The lack of such information can create a significant intelligence
deficit for government agencies and other companies that may be
targeted, Norman argued.
“I don’t think it would be regulatory overkill to say that if you
have a material attack — define ‘material’ — on a company of a certain
size, you are required, within a time limit, to report it to the
NCSC,” Norman told members of Parliament, referring to the U.K.’s
National Cyber Security Centre. “That would enhance the central
intelligence body in the area.”
The issue of public disclosure has been a top consideration of
government regulators and security operations teams in recent years as
ransomware and other malicious attacks have scaled considerably.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission requires publicly traded
companies to disclose attacks within four business days of
determining that they are material, but the rule has faced considerable
pushback from many business leaders.

Nearly 6M Customers Impacted by
Cyberattack
Qantas says cyberattack affected 5.7 million customers
The incident follows a notorious hacker gang’s pivot to targeting
transportation companies with its trademark social-engineering attacks.
Qantas confirmed Wednesday that a cyberattack on one of its vendors
affected 5.7 million passengers.
“Our absolute focus since the incident has been to understand what data
has been compromised for each of the 5.7 million impacted customers and
to share this with them as soon as possible,” Qantas Group CEO Vanessa
Hudson said in a statement.
Hudson said the airline is reaching out to customers to notify them
about the specific data held in the compromised systems and to give them
advice on the additional support services available to them.

Prime Day for Shoppers - And Scammers Too?
McAfee: Prime Day event also prime time for scammers
With Amazon’s four-day Prime Day sales event here, the prevalence of online
scams has increased.
That’s according to a new report from online protection leader McAfee, which
found that more than 36,000 fake Amazon sites and over
75,000 delivery and Amazon impersonation scam texts were reported
leading up to Prime Day.
McAfee says that this year, 81% of Americans say they plan to shop online during
Prime Day, making it a major opportunity for both retailers and scammers. While
roughly nine-in-10 (89%) report taking steps to stay safe online, nearly
two-thirds (65%) of those surveyed admit they are not fully confident in their
ability to spot a scam.
While older adults tend to be more cautious, younger shoppers are far more
likely to take risks on unfamiliar brands, especially on social media.
Nearly a quarter of 18–34-year-olds say they are willing to buy from unknown
retailers if the deal looks good, with 22% of 18–24-year-olds and 21% of
25–34-year-olds ready to click.
Nearly a third of young shoppers say they’ve encountered deepfake influencer
scams during past sale events, and of those, 71% say either they or someone they
know lost money. With more than a quarter (29%) of shoppers browsing TikTok
Shop and 10% using Instagram Shopping, these social platforms are both a go-to
for deals and a growing risk, according to McAfee.
Artificial intelligence is making online scams much
easier, according to the report. Top scams this Prime Day include
fake Amazon websites, deepfake videos of influencers who appear to sell or
endorse products, and a surge in fake Amazon notification texts. These Amazon
impersonation messages, which include delivery updates, refunds and tariff
charges, are designed to create a sense of urgency that pressures people to
click before they think, according to McAfee.
Nearly one-in-three Americans admit they’ve clicked a suspicious link or made
a purchase while multitasking or shopping late at night. Nearly four-in-10
(37%) say a scam, or the fear of one, has stopped them from checking out
entirely.

Online summer sales expected to be the equivalent of ‘two Black Fridays’
Events including Amazon Prime Day are expected to boost digital sales as
price-conscious consumers seek discounts, per Adobe.
Surrounding Amazon’s Prime Day shopping event, online spending is expected to
reach $23.8 billion across U.S. retailers from Tuesday to Friday, according
to an Adobe forecast shared with Retail Dive on Monday.
The anticipated performance would represent a 28.4% increase year over year
when compared to July 16 through July 19 in 2024. Amazon’s Prime Day event
will last four days for the first time this year, with its 2024 shopping event
only consisting of two discount days.
Additionally, the expected online sales would mark the
equivalent of two Black Fridays based on 2024’s $10.8 billion in

Greenpoint, NY: Police search for burglars who stole $300K of clothing near
Greenpoint, Williamsburg border
The NYPD is asking for help in their search for four suspects who they say stole
$300,000 from a business in Brooklyn. Security footage shows four suspects
wearing all black using a crowbar to break the front door of a retail business
located at 17 Kent Ave., on the border of Greenpoint and Williamsburg, early
Sunday morning. Once inside, police say they took over $300,000 in clothing.
They then fled the scene in a white Range Rover.

Columbus, OH: Franklinton market owner accused of selling stolen goods; City
sues to declare store a public nuisance
A market owner in the Franklinton neighborhood is accused of receiving stolen
property and reselling it for profit. Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein and
Franklin County Prosecutor Shayla Favor announced on Tuesday that a lawsuit was
filed against Herbert’s Market, located at 1121 Sullivant Ave., to declare it a
public nuisance and charge the owners for violating state racketeering laws.
According to the lawsuit, the Columbus Division of Police responded to Herbert’s
and the immediate area 138 times for criminal and nuisance reports between July
31, 2022, and July 9, 2025. Those reports included a person threatening others
with a gun, drug use, overdoses and harassment. Additionally, the Columbus
Division of Fire found several code violations related to fire hazards,
including inadequate exit signage and inventory overflow blocking passageways.

Volusia County, FL: Deputies ID man accused of stealing over $30K in jewelry
from Volusia pawn shop
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a 25-year-old man who
allegedly stole over $30,000 worth of jewelry from a local pawn shop. According
to VCSO, the suspect – identified as X’Zayveon Devon-Prince Burden – wore a mask
and gloves when he entered La Familia Pawn Shop in Orange City on Saturday, June
14, just before closing time. While inside the shop, Burden allegedly used a
crowbar to smash a glass case and steal approximately $32,000 in gold chains and
jewelry.

Alpharetta, GA: Suspects sought in theft of $15,000 of sunglasses
More than $15,000 worth of sunglasses were reported stolen from an Avalon shop
June 20. Alpharetta police were dispatched to the business after the theft was
reported. Surveillance cameras at the store recorded two men entering a little
before 1 p.m. and stealing 21 pairs of sunglasses. One man was wearing a brown
hoodie and red shorts. The other was wearing a black hoodie and sweatpants.
Avalon security cameras showed the men walking back to a vehicle at the nearby
Whole Foods. Officers could not determine the vehicle’s license plate number.
Officers obtained a clear image of both men’s faces.

Jacksonville, FL: Family Dollar Robbery suspect shoots officer, who returns fire
killing him
A Family Dollar robbery suspect shot a Jacksonville sheriff's officer who then
returned fire, killing the man on Soutel Drive near Norfolk Boulevard early on
July 9. The Sheriff's Office said the officer was able to strap a tourniquet
onto his leg and is expected to be OK. “If a person will shoot at a policeman
for doing his job after he just committed an armed robbery, he’ll shoot at
anyone," Sheriff T.K. Waters said at the scene. This is at least the third time
an officer was shot at this year in Jacksonville, and the second wounded. Chief
Alan Parker said it started with store employees observing a man walking around
outside about 7 to 7:30 a.m. and in their opinion was casing it out. Once the
store opened about 8 a.m., some customers entered and soon the man also was
inside wearing a mask and hoodie. He tells a clerk, “Give me the money or I’ll
shoot you," Parker said.

Columbus, OH: 1 dead after shooting outside Target in Polaris
One person was killed in a shooting outside of a Target in Polaris on Wednesday
evening, according to the Columbus Division of Police. Officers were called to
the parking lot of the Target, located at 1485 Polaris Parkway, around 6:15 p.m.
on a report of a shooting. The person was pronounced dead at the scene. Police
did not provide details about a possible suspect or what led to the shooting.
The shooting remains under investigation.

Detroit, MI: Store employee, two customers injured in accidental shooting at
Detroit's Eastern Market
Three people were injured in an accidental shooting Wednesday at Detroit's
Eastern Market, according to police. The shooting happened at Al's Fresh Fish &
Chicken on Russell Street. Detroit police say a store employee claimed he found
a gun and mishandled the weapon, shooting himself in the hand. First Assistant
Chief Charles Fitzgerald says the bullet that struck the employee went through a
doorway and hit two customers. One of the customers suffered a gunshot wound in
the left forearm area, and the other was grazed on the wrist. Fitzgerald says
the three people suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Cranston, RI: Shots fired at person walking out of gym at Garden City Center
apparently targeted
Cranston police said Wednesday that shots were fired at someone who walked out
of a gym at Garden City Center in an apparently targeted attack. Nobody was hit,
but police said a person got out of a car and fired several rounds at another
person who walked out of LA Fitness. That person was able to run to safety in
another store. Police said the shooter and other people in the car fled and were
chased by state police to the Providence Place mall parking garage, where three
people were taken into custody by state and Providence police. A gun was
recovered. Police said the person who was shot at appeared to be targeted and
that the shooting was not random.

him from shoplifting
A maniac bit a Bronx Family Dollar worker who tried to stop him from shoplifting
– and then slashed another employee during a violent heist this week, cops said.
The suspect barged into the discount store on Webster Avenue near East 168th
Street in Morrisania around 2:35 p.m. Monday and started swooping up unspecified
items from the shelves, police said. Two employees, Yerime Dieye, 22, and a
24-year-old woman, tried to intervene, authorities said. That’s when the brutal
thief bit the male worker on his arm and finger – and slashed the woman on her
arm with a knife, cops said.
