Organized Retail Theft Grants Used for AI-Powered LPRs
Oregon: Eugene and Springfield will soon have new AI-powered license plate readers that will make ‘digital fingerprints’ of cars
Eugene and Springfield police have purchased license plate readers that use AI to make digital fingerprints of vehicles. Police say they're a tool to gather objective evidence and they’ve already helped solve a violent crime.

The cameras–small black devices powered with solar panels–use AI to capture make, model, color, unique characteristics like damage or bumper stickers, as well as license plate numbers. According to the company, it can also make digital fingerprints of bicycles.

All that data will go into a searchable database maintained by Georgia-based Flock Safety for 30 days. That company now has contracts with Eugene and Springfield Police Departments, as well as law enforcement agencies and homeowners associations across the country.

Eugene Police Chief Chris Skinner said Flock is still in the process of installing Eugene’s 57 cameras, but the department has already used the system to apprehend suspects in two crimes; a robbery and a double homicide. Skinner said he anticipates the cameras will help police gather more evidence, and potentially deter crime, despite staffing challenges.

Both Eugene and Springfield used Oregon Criminal Justice Commission Organized Retail Theft grants to purchase cameras.

Springfield Police Lt. George Crolly said in an email to KLCC that the department bought 25 cameras that will be rolled out over the next few months. He said the cameras will be used for retail theft investigations, stolen vehicles, major crimes and Amber Alerts. He said the department will follow Oregon’s Sanctuary Promise Act, which bars law enforcement from helping with immigration enforcement. klcc.org

How the District’s failure to curb truancy in middle schools yielded the biggest youth crime surge in a generation.

Irving was one of nearly 16,000 D.C. Public Schools students — one-third of its K-12 enrollment — who were truant in 2024, meaning they missed at least two weeks of classes without an excuse. For more than a decade, District leaders have linked school attendance to youth crime, saying tackling one will curb the other.

City leaders blamed the coronavirus pandemic for an uptick in unexcused absences, as well as the rise in youth crime. However, The Post found that the truancy rate began rising for DCPS middle-schoolers before the pandemic, from 10 percent in the 2014-2015 school year to more than 30 percent in 2018-2019 and one-third last year.

The D.C. Council passed anti-truancy laws intended to address youth violence after a series of shootings in 2010 left five young people dead. Arlington, VA: Crime rose in 2024, continuing multi-year trend
Crime continued to increase in Arlington last year, according to police department stats, with notable upticks in reported assaults and shoplifting incidents. The overall number of more serious “Group A” offenses increased 11% between 2023 and 2024, according to the Arlington County Police Department’s annual report released today (Tuesday).

Property crimes rose by around 12%, crimes against people — like assault — increased 9% and crimes against society — including drug offenses — increased by about 1%. Crime rates have been rising for several years in Arlington, although they appear to have begun leveling out in the first few months of this year.

Driving last year’s increase in property crimes was a jump in reported larcenies and thefts, especially shoplifting incidents — which rose from 1,060 in 2023 to 1,863 in 2024. The report notes that multiple factors probably played a role.

How LA erupted over rumours of immigration raid at a hardware store
Juan and several friends huddled in the car park of a hardware store near Los Angeles, where protests have erupted against US President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown.

Typically, their gatherings include dozens of day labourers, many of whom are undocumented immigrants, seeking work from shoppers or contractors.

But on Sunday, only two small pickups advertised that they could help with roofing, repairs or paint jobs outside this branch of Home Depot in the suburb of Paramount, whose population is more than 82% Hispanic.

It was one day after the store became the centre of immigration protests, sparked by rumours that day labourers here had been rounded up and arrested.

Many who live in the community told the BBC they saw immigration enforcement vehicles in the area.

It caused instant fear and panic. Then came reports about raids and arrests of day labourers at Home Depot, a place where many undocumented migrants across the US go to find work.

Protests erupted in this Hispanic-majority city, turning violent as rocks and Molotov cocktails were thrown. Authorities used pepper spray, rubber bullets and smoke bombs to subdue the crowd.

But the demonstrations in Paramount appear to have spawned out of misinformation.

While dozens of migrants have been detained by authorities elsewhere in the area, the rumours of raids at the store were misinformation, according to the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Los Angeles businesses looted overnight; anti-ICE protests expected to continue Monday
Several downtown Los Angeles businesses were looted and vandalized overnight as law enforcement worked to restore order following a weekend of protests that turned violent.

The crowds had mostly dispersed as of Monday morning, but streets are closed, and a heavy law enforcement presence is in place around several downtown federal buildings, where National Guard troops have been posted. Graffiti could be seen on business after business, including the Los Angeles Times building, for several blocks.

Video recorded just after midnight showed individuals going in and out of a T-Mobile store on South Broadway after smashing through the glass front door early Monday morning.

Armed officers also responded to an Adidas store after reports of looting near 8th Street and Broadway. Some of the merchandise taken from the store had been recovered by law enforcement and could be seen on top of their vehicles.

In a digital era where perception can be manufactured and outrage amplified, a new report suggests that the backlash against Target over its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts may have been more artificial than genuine.

Fake Accounts Helped Fuel the Target Backlash

A report from Israeli tech firm Cyabra, and furnished to USA Today, has uncovered a coordinated disinformation campaign aimed at inflating outrage against Target between January and April of this year. Cyabra’s AI-powered analysis found that 27% of social media accounts contributing to the viral backlash were fake, with many impersonating Black users as well as conservative voices.

These inauthentic accounts pushed trending hashtags like #EconomicBlackout and calls for campaigns such as the “Target Fast” or a “40-day boycott,” all while stoking division and intensifying polarization. Cyabra noted that fake accounts were amplifying both sides of the DEI debate — some attacking Target for being “woke.” In contrast, others lambasted the company for backing down on its DEI commitments.

According to USA Today, Cyabra found that “inauthentic sentiment surged 764% after Target’s announcement to roll back some diversity programs.”

“We’ve seen this kind of behavior in disinformation campaigns tied to elections, brands, and social movements around the world,” added company spokesperson Jill Burkes. “When fake profiles move in sync, mimic real users, and amplify both sides of a divisive issue, it’s a clear sign of manipulation.” retailwire.com

Shopping centers and malls are diversifying and getting creative to maintain high foot traffic. The growing trend in experiential retail centers around wellness, healthcare, fitness, recreational sports, pets, and kids. According to Forbes, at the start of the year, CoStar data showed successful retail centers were able to pivot to embrace new shopping trends. Retail data firm Placer.ai’s new Mall Index for May 2025 revealed that mall visits followed a strong performance in April by increasing 5.2% year over year. Indoor malls posted the largest gains with a 6.7% increase in visits, followed by open-air shopping centers (+5.0%) and outlet malls (+3.9%).

Placer.ai says that some of May's visit increases were likely also driven by the sector's strong showing over Memorial Day weekend. An Academic Analysis of Retail Cyberattack Prevention
Empowering machine learning for robust cyber-attack prevention in online retail: an integrative analysis
The world is undergoing an evolution from in-store to online retail. Prominent online retail companies are leading the way in this shift. Significant technical progress has been made to simplify people’s lives, with online shopping being the most evident example. However, despite the various perks online shopping provides, some complications exist, especially cyber-attacks or financial fraud.

Cyber-attacks have emerged as one of the world’s most critical concerns, and their identification and ways of attack are always challenging. In addition, since the emergence of online shopping, the number of Internet-connected devices has rapidly expanded, making them an ideal target for cyber-attacks. Furthermore, cyber-attacks fluctuate from simple to more complex and challenging ones. Instead of simple strategies, ML-based prevention practices were used to combat those complex attacks.

ML has become increasingly important in marketing, supply chain management, risks forecasting, delivery optimisation, location optimisation, fraud detection, finance and healthcare and sales forecasting. However, this paper presents the ML practices implemented by online retailers to prevent cyber-attacks. Like security guards in the real world, ML techniques need to be implanted like a secret agent that supports the protection of data dispersed in billions over cyberspace.

Retail companies have established their cyber security systems and awareness of the ML phenomenon to combat cyber-attacks. Even though the extant literature presents several ML techniques for cyber-attack prevention in multiple domains, no study explicitly describes the cyber-attack prevention dilemma in the online retail context. Some studies further demonstrated a detailed framework of cyber-attack prevention, but those studies still require thorough insights into the prevention mechanism in the online retail sector. Considering the lack of appropriate studies, online retailers cannot effectively prevent cyber-attacks. Therefore, this study explores the grounds to provide a holistic picture of ML prevention practices against cyber-attacks in online retailing.

Will GenAI ‘Become the Consumer,’ Acting as a Second Self When Buying on One’s Behalf?
Generative AI, or GenAI, is a nonstop topic of conversation in the retail business, whether the conversation dwells upon the recent rise of agentic artificial intelligence or the increasing abilities of AI to streamline supply chain operations.

Now, according to a recent and provocative Accenture survey, it appears that further discussions may be worthwhile: Namely, what happens if (or when) AI software moves from being a guide, to a companion, to a representative of a “friend” worthy of acting on an individual consumer’s behalf when it comes to purchasing decisions.

That’s precisely the question posed by Accenture in their study — titled “Me, my brand and AI: The new world of consumer engagement” —which leads with a few interesting statistics:

Generative AI is becoming commonplace, with 72% of those polled (over 18,000 respondents hailing from 14 nations) saying that they regularly utilize related tools.
Nearly all (94%) of active GenAI users have or would consider asking these tools for help with personal development goals.
Only a slightly lower, yet strong, majority (87%) of respondents indicated that they would query the GenAI tools for social and relationship advice.
More than one-third (36%) of those active GenAI users surveyed said they consider the tech a “good friend.”

Despite growing awareness of fake online reviews, a new University of South Florida study finds that consumers still overwhelmingly trust what they read—even when they shouldn't.

The research investigates a key question: Are consumers naturally skeptical of online reviews, or do they tend to believe them? The answer lies in what psychologists call a "truth bias"—the tendency to assume information is truthful unless there's strong evidence otherwise.

The researchers also explored how the tone of reviews—positive or negative—affects perceptions of authenticity. Real-world data from a variety of online platforms shows that negative reviews are more likely to be fake than positive reviews.

Police said they arrested two suspects as of Wednesday, stemming from a rug store burglary in Redwood City that resulted in six figures worth of merchandise stolen, police said. Three men who are accused of stealing from Moore County retail stores and leading police on a chase that ended in a crash on Friday have been identified by the Aberdeen Police Department. Staff at the sports store, Going Going Gone!, reported a larceny in progress with the suspects leaving in a gold sedan. Aberdeen officers observed the suspect vehicle heading south on U.S. 1 toward downtown Aberdeen. Officers attempted a traffic stop, and the vehicle sped up and, as it entered the intersection at Highway 5 and U.S. 1, it crashed into two other vehicles, said Aberdeen Police Chief Brian Chavis. “Aberdeen officers began processing the vehicle, after viewing stolen property from Going, Going, Gone in the front passenger floorboard,” said the Aberdeen Police Department. “Additional stolen clothing items were located inside the vehicle from Ross and TJ Maxx. St Louis, MO: 8-year-old injured in Baden shooting; 1 man dead in C-Store
A deadly shooting outside a north St. Louis market left a young man dead and an 8-year-old girl hurt. Investigators are attempting to piece together what led up to the sudden violence. The shooting happened late Sunday afternoon just after 5 p.m. in the 8300 block of North Broadway at the Elite Supermarket and Grill, located in the city’s Baden neighborhood. According to a statement from a St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department spokesman, a man in his 20s was killed and a second man, a 25-year-old, was found inside the market with a gunshot wound to his leg. Memphis, TN: Man arrested for shooting "innocent bystander" at C-Store
Memphis Police (MPD) arrested a man in connection to a shooting near a store in Memphis' Hollywood neighborhood. MPD said Quinton Ware pulled the trigger that injured a man at the Chelsea Food Mart on Saturday, May 31. According to police, video showed Ware enter the store with a gun and get into an argument with another person. Ware then ran out of the store and jumped into a silver car, according to police. As that car sped away, several shots came out of the passenger side of the car, police said. One of those bullets hit an innocent bystander, according to MPD. fox13memphis.com

Salina, KS: Shot Fired at Car in Drive-Through Lane
Salina Police are looking for a suspect who reportedly fired a gun at a vehicle that was in line at a drive-through window. Police Captain David Villanueva tells KSAL News that officers responded to Poncho’s Mexican Food at 3029 Riffel Drive around 3am Sunday after a suspect described as a black male allegedly stepped out of a black, Jeep SUV and fired one round at a white Chevy Camaro. Investigators found one spent .30 caliber shell casing in the parking lot. Police say the Jeep was in front of the Camaro in the drive-through lane just before the incident. Both vehicles left the scene. Authorities are reviewing store video and using the tag reader system in the investigation. ksal.com

A 23-year-old man wanted in connection to a June 2 shooting outside a Brockton Wingstop turned himself in to police Monday, June 9, the city's police spokesperson Darren Duarte said. Jake Malafronte, 23, will be arraigned in Brockton District Court Monday on several weapons charges, Duarte said. The shooting occurred on Monday, June 2 shortly before 5:14 p.m. at 21 Torrey St., outside the Wingstop in the Points West Plaza shopping mall. Washington DC: Special Police Officer and employee attacked twice inside Safeway, police search for suspects
On Saturday, police were called to the 400 block of 14th Street for reports of an assault just before 9:30 a.m. According to the police report, employees at the Safeway saw the three suspects trying to leave the store with stolen items stuffed inside a stroller. As the suspects tried to leave, one of the employees tried to retrieve the items. One of the suspects then turns around and punches the employee in the face multiple times. During the assault, a second employee tried to get the stolen items out of the stroller. The suspect stops punching the initial employee to push the second employee to the ground. While on the ground, a second suspect begins punching the second employee in the head. The initial aggressor starts kicking the second employee in the chest. All three suspects then ran out of the store. As the employees attempt to gather the items that were left behind and recover from their beating, one of the suspects returns to punch the employee in the face, "leaving him dazed." The incident didn't end with the assault; two of the suspects came back to the store shortly after. A woman claimed she hadn't received an item she had paid for and began arguing with the employees. The same employee attempted to intervene again, resulting in another fight to break out inside the grocery store. One of the suspects started punching the employee in the face again, leading to a large fight that left three people injured. wusa9.com

Milford, DE: 2 hurt as car drives through Del. Dollar Tree store
A driver crashed into a Dollar Tree in Milford, Delaware, on Saturday afternoon, injuring two people, including a 97-year-old woman, police said. For unknown reasons, a 44-year-old woman left the roadway and drove her gold Hyundai Elantra into the dollar store located in the Cypress Hall Shopping Center at around 3:25 p.m., police said. The car struck a 97-year-old woman inside the store, police said. She was airlifted to the hospital and has since been listed in stable, but critical condition. A 76-year-old was also injured by crash debris and was treated and released from the hospital, police said. According to police, the 44-year-old driver was taken to the hospital and her condition is not known at this time. The driver stopped the car at the back of the store, according to police.
