Mall Mass Shooting Thwarted by FBI
FBI thwarts mass shooting planned for Washington state mall, authorities say
The FBI thwarted a potential mass shooting by a teenager who planned to set off an explosive at a shopping mall in Washington state and shoot people as they fled the movie theater there, law enforcement leaders said Thursday.

A juvenile boy from Columbia County was arrested May 22 on state charges, according to the FBI. Authorities didn’t release his name.

The shooting was planned for the Three Rivers Crossing in Kelso, Washington, authorities said. The mall is about 50 miles north of Portland off Interstate 5, and has a mix of national retailers including JCPenney, Target and Safeway, local businesses and Regal Cinemas, according to its website.

The teen had a map of the mall, a route to follow and a plan to use a chlorine bomb as a distraction to cause panic and then shoot people as they left the movie theater before killing himself at the mall, the FBI said in a statement.

“An alarming amount of indicators of a cogent path to violence were met -- at no point in this plan did it seem like the suspect wouldn’t follow through with their plans,” the FBI said.

Olson, special agent in charge of Portland’s FBI office, said the FBI received a tip on May 19 that someone had posted threats to an online group chat of “detailed and imminent attack plans” and federal agents by the next day had identified a suspect and then obtained a warrant to search his Columbia County residence. oregonlive.com

The operation marks the first concerted blow to those gangs, which have become become the fastest-growing theft threat to victimized businesses that have already lost billions of dollars in boosted goods.

News of the raids that were carried out last week only surfaced in news reports Wednesday, after law enforcement agencies in over 100 jurisdictions made what some accounts said were over 400 arrests. That nationwide operation against the growing scourge of organized retail crime (ORC) was overseen by Illinois’s Cook County regional organized-crime task force. It also involved the participation of companies including Walgreens, Ulta Beauty, Target, Home Depot, Kroger, and Lululemon. The chains provided information on their locations that were recently struck by suspected shoplifting gangs, as well as lists of goods stolen and any available information on suspected perpetrators.

While the dramatic development was only the opening salvo in what retailers hope is law enforcement’s large-scale response to ORC, it’s a significant development all the same.

Another reason the recent anti-ORC operation is important is because—in the absence of federal laws recognizing and combatting the crime—states have largely had to wage that battle on their own. While that has led to certain successful operations, such as California making 383 arrests and recovering $4.4 million in stolen goods in April, that piecemeal approach has done little to either uproot or deter the gangs involved. That may have changed with last week’s coordinated raids.

Meanwhile, in addition to working more closely together to prepare and stage last week’s sweeps, state law enforcement agencies are now also enlisting the help of retailers who’ve been victimized by ORC, and can provide information leading to the arrest of perpetrators. inc.com

A blackmail threat containing a racist slur was also directed at the chief executive, as well as seven additional members of the executive team

Hackers behind the M&S cyberattack reportedly sent an email directly to CEO Stuart Machin gloating about their actions and demand for payment, according to the BBC. The email, as seen by the news outlet, initially appeared to have been sent on 23 April via an employee’s email account at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), an Indian IT firm that has provided services to M&S for more than 10 years.

Hackers claimed to have deployed ransomware that crippled the M&S IT infrastructure and admitted to having also exfiltrated the personal information of millions of customers.

Prosecutors say Bernhardt would either hide items on his person, scan a cheaper barcode through the self-checkout machine, or neglect to scan products in his cart. Bernhardt pleaded guilty in Prince George’s County Circuit Court to stealing approximately 62 times from stores in Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, Frederick, Garrett and Allegany counties. Nassau County, NY: Update: Hempstead Man Convicted of Point-Blank Murder and Six Robberies
Deshawn Martin attempted to rob a restaurant in Hempstead at gunpoint in January 2022 and shot and killed 49-year-old Santos Valeriano Argueta when he tried to intervene in an assault. Defendant faces life in prison without parole when sentenced in July. nassauda.org

Greenville, SC: Gunfire and building fire break out just hours apart at Haywood Mall
A building fire and a shooting happened just hours apart at Haywood Mall in Greenville, South Carolina, Wednesday, prompting calls for more safety measures. The gunfire outside the mall was caught on video by a group of teenagers. "The guy was like, 'I'll beat your (expletive), I'll beat your (expletive).' and so they start fighting. He starts punching girls and whatnot. His guns dropped out of his pants, and he picks it up and just starts shooting," recalls Aiden Peck, who was shopping with his friends. The Greenville Police Department says a group of juveniles was reportedly assaulting an employee from one of the restaurants. After the altercation, they exited the mall and continued the assault in the parking lot, where one individual discharged a firearm. wyff4.com

Atlanta, GA: Two shot in Greenbriar Mall parking lot
Police in Atlanta are investigating a double shooting in the parking lot of Greenbriar Mall that occurred on Thursday. The incident happened shortly after 3 p.m. near the south entrance to Greenbriar Mall near the Dollar Tree. According to the Atlanta Police Department, officers arrived at the scene to find two males with apparent gunshot wounds. fox5atlanta.com

Oregon City, OR: Update: Mall Shooting Suspect Sentenced
One of two men accused of shooting a teenager at Clackamas Town Center in December pleaded guilty and was sentenced to over seven years in prison. Nineteen-year-old Pedro Cornejo-Morales walked up to a car and fired five shots at a passenger. A 15-year-old boy was hit in the hand and hospitalized. The second man, Carlos Hererra-Medrano, was also charged with attempted murder. His trial is set for August 12th. kbnd.com

Massapequa, NY: 6 Men Illegally Entered Sunrise Mall To Spray Paint On Walls
Six men were arrested for an incident that took place on Wednesday night in Massapequa, office said. The men were inside of the Sunrise Mall unlawfully at approximately 11:30 p.m spraying paint on the walls, police said. Six men ages 18 and 19 years old were placed under arrest at scene without incident. They are all charged with third-degree burglary and making graffiti, police said. patch.com

Active listening is absolutely critical if you really expect to influence change or modify behavior. You've got to hear what they're saying before you can plan or expect to do virtually anything. And hearing what they're saying is not simply hearing the words it's all about hearing the meaning and the intentions behind the words. Because words have a tendency to hide the true meanings and beliefs. As truth is often cloaked in humor so is meaning hidden in words. With the number one obstacle being one's self hearing is often drown out by how we want others to view us. So if you can leave your self at the door so to speak you can then begin to focus on hearing what they're saying.
