RCC Session Spotlight: The Fight Against Online
Fraud
Hear first-hand how experts are protecting against online fraud
|
Part One - Current Trends in Digital Security
Presented by Kevin C. Krinke
Covering a few of the more
interesting digital operations and security trends in recent history that touch
upon, or have direct impacts on, retail businesses and large corporations from
around the world.
Part Two - The Fight Against Online
Fraud
Roundtable Discussion
With the
rise of e-commerce, retailers are always looking for new ways to drive traffic
to their virtual stores. But the popularity of online shopping has also drawn
the interest of some unwanted customers. The anonymity of e-tailing means it has
become easier for would-be criminals to perpetrate online fraud using a variety
of schemes that might involve stolen credit card numbers, gift cards and even
in-store pick-ups. Incurring shipping costs and credit card chargeback fees can
make the process all the more onerous for retailers who may be on the hook for
substantial losses and cumbersome investigations. A panel of retail experts
share their strategies for fighting online fraud and minimizing losses.
The conference will be held on Sept. 29 at the
International Centre in Mississauga.

Tried and tested: liquor
distribution and retail system ready to manage legalized marijuana
The Responsible Marijuana Retail Alliance of BC, a partnership between the
BC Private Liquor Store Association (BCPLSA) and BC Government and Service
Employees' Union (BCGEU), today communicated its support of the federal
government's process toward the legalization and regulation of marijuana
across Canada.
The alliance intends to offer advice to policymakers
on the safe and effective distribution and sale of recreational marijuana,
recommending liquor stores as the model best suited for retailing purposes.
"Liquor stores provide the most strictly controlled system for accessing
a controlled substance because they already have the proper infrastructure
and mechanisms required for the safe retailing of non-medical marijuana,"
remarked Damian Kettlewell, marijuana spokesperson for the BCPLSA. "If
provincial and territorial governments can regulate the retail landscape
through the existing liquor control mechanism the high level of compliance
and safety of the liquor system can flow through to the marijuana
retail system."
The Responsible Marijuana Retail Alliance of BC has
examined post-prohibition liquor regulations to help shape its
recommendations. Most of these regulations remain in place, and Canada's
liquor regulatory system is a model that should be used for introducing
other legal, controlled substances into the country, such as marijuana,
according to the alliance.

Edmonton, AB: Man left gravely injured after being
attacked in 7-Eleven parking lot A man was
taken to hospital after being found suffering from very serious injuries outside
a west Edmonton convenience store Wednesday morning. It's believed he was
attacked in the store parking lot. Police said 7-Eleven employees knew a man was
laying outside.
"The staff inside the store has been interviewed and they didn't see anything
other than the fact that they were aware that there was an individual laying in
front of the store.
"But sadly this neighbourhood, it's not uncommon in
the middle of the night for people to find themselves laying in and around the
7-Eleven. So it wasn't that out of the ordinary."
The area around the
store does experience crime, with several
assaults,
robberies, thefts, and break and enters in the past 30 days alone. Police
believe they have found the weapon used in the attack, but have not revealed
what it was.
