Canadian Crime Study: Driven by spikes in robbery, fraud and homicide, police-reported crime in Canada increased in 2015 for the first time in over a decade

As the D&D Daily reported last week, police-reported crime in Canada - in terms of both the Crime Severity Index (CSI) and the overall crime rate - increased in 2015. This represents the first spike in over 12 years.

According to the annual Stats Canada report, the CSI rose by 5 percent last year, and the Violent Crime Severity Index saw a 6 percent jump, "largely due to increases in robbery, homicide, attempted murder, and violations specific to the use, discharge and pointing of firearms." Overall, "there were almost 1.9 million Criminal Code incidents (excluding traffic) reported by police in 2015, approximately 70,000 more than in 2014."

The graph below shows that, while Canada's Crime Severity Index has been steadily declining for over a decade, 2015 saw a noticeable increase.

The graph below shows that, in 2015, all three categories of crimes - violent, property and other - increased since last year:

According to the report, the violent violations with a rate increase were robbery (+5%), attempted murder (+22%), and homicide (+15%), among others.

Rates for all types of property crimes also increased from in 2015, including fraud (+15%), possession of stolen property (+13%), theft over $5,000 (+8%), and breaking and entering (+4%).

Law enforcement officials in Calgary and Edmonton both cite the economy as the driving force behind the nationwide spike in crime.

Brampton, ON: Store owner, 66, fights man trying to rob him; Thief involved in five other recent robberies
A Brampton convenience store owner fought back against a would-be thief, avoiding being robbed during what police allege was a 24-hour crime spree. The young man grabs a pack of candy, goes to the counter and begins to pay. As Lee is at the cash register, the man pulls out some sort of tool and appears to demand cash. He grabbed for the tool, came around the counter and began pushing the man toward the exit, ultimately kicking him out the door before chasing him, according to Lee and his wife, to a waiting taxi.  cctvnews.com
