Polk County, FL: Law enforcement
summoned hundreds of times to Wal-Mart this year, but Sheriff shows results
in ORC arrests
Although some calls
are for fraud or lewd behavior, most of them are for shoplifting, with the
Polk County Sheriff's Office dispatching agencies in the county 213 times
since Jan. 1. The Lakeland, FL Police Department has responded to two
Wal-Mart locations 215 times from Jan. 1 to May 12. Because Wal-Mart seems
to have a steady need for police presence to deter shoplifting, the
Sheriff's Office formed an organized retail crime unit in August 2013.
Horstman said the unit investigates professional shoplifting, organized
retail crime rings and other organized crime occurring in the retail
environment. "While most people think that retail crime may just be
a traditional shoplifter, (Sheriff Grady) Judd said many times those thieves
are involved in organized retail crimes where between $100,000 to $1 million
in property is stolen," she said. The unit has been successful in not only
stopping shoplifters at Wal-Mart over the years but at other businesses as
well.
