New Canadian Plastic $20 bills hits the market tomorrow. On Wednesday, the Bank of Canada will begin circulating a new $20 bill made of polymer instead of paper. The new bill pays tribute to the contributions and sacrifices of Canadian men and women in all military conflicts and is being released just before Remembrance Day. The note features a view of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial on its back. The bill will be formally introduced in a ceremony at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa by Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and Veterans Affairs Minister Steven Blaney. The $20 is the country's mostly widely used bank note. The Bank of Canada began issuing polymer money a year ago with a new $100 bill, followed by a $50 note in March. New $5 and $10 notes are scheduled to be issued by the end of 2013. (Source cbc.ca)

CIBC and Rogers Communications Inc. (owner of Canadian Grocer) launched mobile payments in Canada last Friday. Olympic gold medallist Simon Whitfield showcased the technology at a Tim Hortons outlet in downtown Toronto in what the two companies called the “first point-of-sale mobile credit card transaction in Canada. The technology relies on a secure SIM card inside a near field communication-enabled smartphone. The customer holds their smartphone up to a contactless payment terminal and the amount is charged to their CIBC credit card. (Source canadiangrocer.com)

. A 32-year-old Calgary man has been charged with robbery and kidnapping after police were led on a wild chase in the northeast late Sunday afternoon. A female security guard jumped into the offender’s stolen vehicle to try to stop the man from getting away. But the alleged shoplifter drove away with the guard in the vehicle, smashing into a car in the parking lot. Driving down the wrong side of the road, coming head-on into traffic police chased the vehicle and were able to box it in a short time later. The suspect was taken into custody and the Zellers security guard was unharmed, but shaken up by the wild ride. (Source cbc.ca)
