Vietnam faces pending charges after authorities caught them with a pile of
namebrand clothes valued at 250,000 yuan ($39,000), the fifth organized
theft gang comprising foreigners caught in Shanghai since 2007. Police
caught five of the suspects near a Zara store who lead them to the remaining
suspect at a hotel room where six suitcases containing some 600 pieces of
clothing from Zara were discovered. Two of the men from the group
frequented the store and, as such, caught the attention of plain-clothes
police officers on patrol at Times Square. The officers later found that
they received clothes from two other women inside the store, who passed the
merchandise to another man at the front of the store through a special bag
that passed security without triggering an alarm. They later confessed to
hitting 10 Zara stores over the last 5 days. The Vietnamese suspects are
the latest foreigners that police have found shoplifting in the city;
another 21 foreigners have been caught for the same crime over the past four
years. Chinese and foreign individuals found guilty of stealing properties
valued at more than 100,000 yuan ($15,000) risk more than 10 years in jail,
