Stealing thousands of dollars every time
they hit at Bowie, MD Safeway Store
Are they hitting you?
BOWIE, Md. (WUSA) -- You've heard of
criminals who steal electronics and then resell them, but what about criminals
who steal everyday household items? It's happening in Prince George's County
where police say an organized shoplifting ring has been operating for the last
several months.
Police have released security camera footage of four suspects, three men and one
woman, who are believed to have stolen up to $9,000 worth of merchandise from a
Safeway in Bowie.
"Apparently they've been doing this for several months," said Cpl. Henry Tippett
with Prince George's County Police. "They're pretty organized at scoping out the
store, realizing when there's not a lot of employees in the store, kind of
distracting employees , and just walking out with thousands of dollars of
merchandise at a time."
The shoplifters are stealing all sorts of everyday household items, especially
more expensive products like diapers and laundry detergent. The big question now
is what do they do with it once they've stolen it?
"That's something we're trying to figure out. We don't know if they're
attempting to pawn this? We're working with local pawn shops. Maybe they're
trying to sell it on the aftermarket to get the cash for it? We just don't know
at this point," said Cpl. Tippett.
Anyone with information about this case or the identity of the suspects is asked
to call the Prince George's County Police Department's Special Enforcement
Division/Organized Retail Crime Unit at (301) 699-2941.
