Facial Recognition is an 'Important
Asset' in Fighting Crime
Bunnings releases brutal CCTV amid privacy debacle
Does staff safety justify facial recognition?
Bunnings has released a shocking CCTV montage of attacks against its
employees after Australia’s privacy watchdog slammed its use of
facial-recognition surveillance technology.
On Tuesday, the Office of the Australian Commissioner (OAIC) declared
home improvement retailer Bunnings “breached
Australians’ privacy” by collecting personal, sensitive information
through a facial recognition technology system.
The system – which was incorporated into CCTV – captured the faces of
“likely hundreds of thousands of individuals” across 63 Bunnings stores
in Victoria and New South Wales between November 2018 and November 2021,
the commissioner said.
After copping online blowback and being ordered to “not repeat or
continue” the acts which “led to interference with individuals’
privacy”, Bunnings retorted with a brutal, CCTV-caught collection of
violent attacks against its staff.
One attack shows a staff member suddenly punched in the face, another
shows a knife brandished to an employee’s throat, while the worst of the
bunch sees a man in a balaclava entering the store with a shotgun.
Speaking with
ABC Radio Perth, Bunnings managing director Mike Schneider confirmed
the company will challenge the OAIC’s findings.
“We’ve seen significant spikes in not only the usual shoplifting we’ve
all become accustomed to, but really aggressive violent behaviour.
“We believe this tool, along with the other tools we have, is a
really important asset in the fight against this sort of crime.”

Chicago's New Shoplifting Hot Spot
Shoplifting soaring in Chicago after new North Side hot spot emerged in
2023
A small area including parts of Lake View and Lincoln Park became
a hub of shoplifting in 2023 in addition to downtown, the longtime
epicenter of such thefts. This year through October, retail theft was up
46% in Chicago compared with the same period of 2023, researchers say.
A small area of retail shopping inside less
than half a square mile of the North Side emerged last year as a hot
spot for shoplifting in Chicago, according to a new study.
A report by the Council on Criminal Justice, a nonpartisan policy group
in Washington, says the city’s annual shoplifting rate per 100,000
people fell significantly in 2020 and 2021 during the COVID-19
pandemic. And the city’s retail theft rate in 2023 was lower than in
2018, the report says.
But that rate skyrocketed 46% in Chicago this year through October
compared with the same period of 2023, the report says. This year’s
shoplifting rate is also higher than the same period of any of the past
six years in the city.
In Chicago, an area including parts of Lake View and Lincoln Park became
a new hot spot for retail theft in 2023, the Council on Criminal
Justice found. Downtown, including the Gold Coast and
the Loop, remained the No. 1 place where
shoplifting was concentrated. Those two areas had the highest
rates of shoplifting in the city, by far.
Unlike Los Angeles, where shoplifting hot spots are spread throughout
the city, Chicago’s other big retail centers in neighborhoods away
from the lakefront have seen a far lower rate of shoplifting than
downtown or the Near North Side since 2018.
Business groups see shoplifting as a costly problem in Chicago and the
state. The Illinois Retail Merchants Association cites a Capital One
report that said Illinois merchants lost more than $2.9 billion in
revenue in 2022 due to retail theft.

Law Enforcement Turning to Tech &
Retail Partnerships to Fight ORC
Despite increases in theft, here’s how Florida retailers say police are
cracking down
Law enforcement investigators and teams are turning to advanced
technology and community partnerships to dismantle organized theft rings
across Florida.
With retail theft in Florida and the nation surging over the past five
years, and businesses estimating losses of more than five billion per
year, Florida law enforcement is pushing back. And the Florida Retail
Federation (FRF) says police are making a difference, too, by employing
innovative tactics and forging partnerships with retailers to take
the fight directly to organized theft rings. And that success is
starting to turn heads.
Last night in Tampa, FRF honored Detective Autumn Moore of the
Tallahassee Police Department as its 2024 Law Enforcement Officer of the
Year. The state’s largest retailer association says Moore has
disrupted organized retail theft in the capital
city with a mix of rapid response and cutting-edge technology.
In one weekend, FRF says she orchestrated 11 arrests tied to retail
crime, thanks in part to her innovative use of tools like license
plate readers and real-time surveillance, combined with partnerships
with retailers across the area. Together, Moore’s approach has
helped track suspects and recover stolen merchandise efficiently,
earning her widespread praise.
Her approach is part of a larger, statewide strategy, FRF says. The
Florida Organized Retail Crime Exchange (FORCE), launched in 2021,
connects law enforcement agencies with retailers via an
intelligence-sharing platform. The initiative has helped crack
dozens of high-profile cases.
The group also said some of its member retailers are also taking
action to protect their businesses and customers. Mandy Aguilar and
Kelli Flynn of Lowe’s were recognized as Retail Partners of the Year by
the FRF, having hosted a series of intelligence-sharing meetings across
Florida. Their efforts have led to multiple arrests and brought
much-needed awareness to the growing issue of organized retail theft.

1,600 More Officers on NYC Streets
More NYPD officers heading to streets with NYC budget restorations:
Mayor Adams
Savings on migrant spending and better-than-expected tax revenue will
allow the city to restore two previously canceled police classes and put
an additional 1,600 officers on the street, Mayor Adams said
Wednesday.
Adams said the budget expansion was largely made possible due to $436
million in savings on migrant spending since July, with total savings
tallying up to $785 million, although Jacques Jiha, the city’s
budget director, said that the budget’s growth by $3 billion was in
large part due to new grant money.
The updated plan reflects an additional $1.6 billion in federal grant
funds, plus more than $650 million in state grant funds in
this fiscal year.
Previously, the budget for fiscal year 2025 sat at around $112 billion.
The new plan, which boosts the total to $115 billion, also
reflects over $200 million in unexpected tax revenue this fiscal year,
Adams said, with additional funds coming from debt service and pension
savings.
The restored police classes will add 1,600 new cops to the police
force by October 2025. The classes were cut in 2023 as part of
Adams’ controversial belt-tightening during the migrant crisis.

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
What It Takes to Put on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade,
by the Numbers
The
98th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has returned to the
streets of New York City. The Macy's parade has been a traditional holiday
season kickoff and spectators often line up a half-dozen deep along the route to
cheer the marchers, floats, entertainers and marching bands. The holiday
tradition will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET.
2.5 Mile Route - The parade route twists and
turns down the streets of Manhattan, starting on West 77th street and Central
Park West and ends in front of the iconic Macy's flagship store on 34th
street in Herald's Square.
Two to three million people line the streets to get a glimpse of the
action, according to
NPR.
The Thanksgiving Day Parade marks Macy's single biggest volunteer event of
the year. More than 4,500 volunteers are credited for keeping the parade
alive.
Security Precautions Taken at Last Year's Event
No large backpacks, lawn chairs, umbrellas, large coolers or alcoholic beverages
are allowed. Anyone who sees suspicious activity should alert a police
officer or call 911. The NYPD's terrorism hotline is 888-NYC-SAFE.
Last year. the NYPD pointed out that while there were no "active, credible or specific" threats to the annual
Thanksgiving parade in New York, the event remains an "attractive target."
Part of the NYPD security profile for the parade includes blocker cars,
barriers and bollards.

80% of Retailers 'Failing to Protect
Customers'
Retailers Failing to Protect Consumers from Toxic Chemicals
New survey finds 80% of retailers did not implement policies to
provide safer alternatives to toxic packaging.
The 2024 Retailer Report Card, from Toxic-Free Future, finds
that the largest retailers in the U.S. and Canada are failing to
protect customers from toxic chemicals and harmful plastics found in
the products and packaging.
The average grade for retailers is a D+, with
17 retailers earning failing F grades including brands such as 7-Eleven,
Five Below, LL Flooring, McDonald’s, and Sally Beauty. The
report grades the chemical policies and practices of 50 retail chains
covering more than 200,000 stores in the U.S. and Canada.
Lowest-ranking retailers include restaurants like Subway and Yum!
Brands, along with the dollar store chain Five Below. “Nine years
after our call to eliminate hazardous chemicals, dollar stores still
have progress to make,” said Jose Bravo, national campaign coordinator
of the Campaign for Healthier Solutions, in a statement.
As a group, 80% of retailers failed to
implement policies that ensure safer alternatives to harmful chemicals
and plastics. A reason for this could be that more than half
of the retailers surveyed (54%) do not ask their suppliers to disclose
the chemical ingredients used in their products. “Retailers must require
ingredient transparency, ban the most hazardous chemicals and plastics
in products and packaging, and invest in safer solutions,” said Cheri
Peele, senior project manager for Toxic-Free Future, in a statement.

Boosting the Customer Experience With
Smart Carts?
Will Smart Shopping Carts Improve the Wegmans Shopping Experience?
Wegmans, which in 2022 discontinued its popular self-checkout app, is
testing smart shopping carts at three stores in upstate New York as
the technology appears to be gaining some traction.
The test comes after Wegmans pulled the plug on its SCAN
self-checkout app in 2022 because thieves were exploiting the
technology to walk out of stores without paying.
Smart shopping carts, which scan and weigh groceries as shoppers put
items in their carts, promise to reduce theft attributed to
self-scanning overall. Analysis shared last fall by cashierless checkout
technology startup Grabango showed that losses due to self-checkout
terminals amount to 3.5% of sales, more than 16 times greater than
traditional cashiers.
The devices also promise to reduce the still-common scanning errors
at self-checkout that often require associate assistance. Beyond
scanning, smart shopping carts’ displays allow shoppers to track
spending. The carts further sync with grocery stores’ loyalty
accounts to give customers personalized discounts or even location-based
promotions and add-along items based on what’s already in the shopper’s
cart or what aisle the shopper is in.

Microsoft's Security Overhaul
Microsoft unveils resiliency, security enhancements following July global IT
outage
The updates are part of a larger effort at the company to overhaul its
internal security culture.
Microsoft unveiled the Windows Resiliency Initiative Tuesday, which
follows the July global IT outage linked to a faulty CrowdStrike software
update, according to a blog post from David Weston, VP of enterprise and OS
security at Microsoft. The effort is intended to advance the company’s prior
efforts to overhaul its security culture.
“We are committed to ensuring that Windows remains the most reliable and
resilient open platform for our customers,” Weston said in the blog.
Microsoft will allow IT administrators to make changes to Windows Update on PCs,
even if the machines are unable to boot up. Administrators will not require
physical access to the machines to make the necessary changes.
The service will be available to the Windows Insider Program community
starting in early 2025.
Microsoft also plans to use safe deployment practices with endpoint security
partners to make sure security upgrades are gradual and monitored. The goal
is to minimize any negative results from rollouts.

North Korean IT 'Front Companies'
Active network of North Korean IT front companies exposed
An
analysis of the websites belonging to companies that served as a front for
getting North Korean IT workers remote jobs with businesses worldwide has
revealed an active network of such companies originating in China.
Unearthing North Korean IT front companies
US authorities have been warning about North Korean IT workers’ tactics to
bypass sanctions for a number of years, and have repeatedly seized website
domains that looked like they belong to legitimate IT services companies and
were used to help North Korean IT workers to hide their true identities and
location when applying for jobs.
They’ve also disrupted US-based schemes aimed at facilitating their
employment and perpetrating the deception.
SentinelOne researchers have analyzed the websites of four recently identified
front companies (whose domains have been seized), and have uncovered multiple
leads that point to an active network of North Korean IT front companies
originating in China.

Trump's Win Might Be a Boost for Amazon's Labor Fight
Amazon and SpaceX aim to defang the federal labor board. Trump may help.
Donald Trump’s presidential administration is poised to oversee major cuts to
the powers of the federal agency that protects unions, as corporations
including Elon Musk’s SpaceX barrage the National Labor Relations Board with
lawsuits and Trump allies consider firing its Democratic members.
This week, Amazon, the nation’s second-largest private employer, and
rocket maker SpaceX, founded by Trump adviser Musk, argued in federal court that
the structure of the NLRB is unconstitutional. They are among two dozen cases
working their way through the courts that seek to drastically rein in the
board’s power.
Trump advisers have separately discussed taking the exceptional step of firing
Democratic members of the five-person labor board, according to two people
familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe
internal discussions.
Taken together, the moves threaten to weaken or even eliminate an agency that
under the Biden administration has taken a more active role in safeguarding
unions and expanding their opportunities, but has been criticized by
corporations for bias in favor of unions and legal overreach.
“These companies are trying to get the act overruled,” said Seth
Goldstein, a labor lawyer who has represented Trader Joe’s and Amazon workers,
referring to the 1935 law that established the NLRB. “And labor better wake up,
because it’s coming.”

Walmart slashes US delivery costs by 40% per order
Increased automation and more efficient driver routes helped the retail
giant accomplish the feat for the third consecutive quarter.
Walmart
slashed its U.S. net delivery cost per order by 40% in Q3 for the third
consecutive quarter, EVP and CFO John David Rainey said in an earnings call
Tuesday.
“There are a few key factors driving this improvement: delivery
densification, increased penetration of paid expedited delivery orders and the
automation of our supply chain,” Rainey said.
Orders per delivery increased 20% year over year, resulting in more
cost-efficient and productive driver routes. Walmart is also handling more than
50% of its fulfillment center volume with automation, twice as much as a year
ago, Rainey said.

undo the nuts and bolts and had enough time to sit back there and fiddle

Shootings & Deaths
Philadelphia, PA: Deadly shooting at Philadelphia pizza shop may have been
sparked by fender bender, road rage
A person is dead after being shot in the head while inside a North Philadelphia
pizza shop. Police say they believe it started with a minor crash, possibly
involving road rage, before it escalated to the deadly shooting. It happened
just after midnight on Thursday at Pete's Pizza in the 2000 block of Ridge
Avenue, next to Girard College. Homicide investigators say they watched it all
play out on video from multiple angles. "The pizza takeout recorded some pretty
clear images of our shooter and pretty clear images of the shooting," said Chief
Inspector Scott Small, with the Philadelphia Police Department. Police say the
26-year-old victim was driving a Honda when he got into a minor crash with
another man and pulled over outside the pizza shop. That's when the men started
arguing and then went into the pizza shop, where they got into a fight.

Overland Park, KS: Update: Man accused of firing police officer’s gun in scuffle
at Oak Park Mall pleads guilty
A man pleaded guilty Wednesday in an incident at Oak Park Mall where he fired a
shot from an Overland Park police detective's gun back in 2023. Nery Alberto
Gonzalez-Munoz pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault on a law
enforcement officer and one count of misdemeanor theft. Gonzalez-Munoz was one
of two suspects who stole over $475 worth of merchandise from Macy’s inside the
mall, according to court documents. When police attempted to stop Gonzalez-Munoz
in the mall's food court, he allegedly resisted two Overland Park police
officers and entered into a struggle on the ground. During the struggle,
Gonzalez-Munoz allegedly wrestled an Overland Park detective’s gun away and
fired a single shot. Detectives later located the round in the leg of a chair in
the food court. Surveillance video revealed a girl between the ages of 5 and 7
was sitting in the chair less than 10 seconds before the bullet struck it.
Gonzalez-Munoz was eventually taken into custody after a second struggle with
officers. His sentencing date is set for Feb. 10, 2025.

Cape Coral, FL: TikToker with 300,000 followers arrested for Target shoplifting
A Cape Coral TikToker with nearly 300,000 followers was arrested after police
say she shoplifted $500 worth of merchandise from Target - and even filmed part
of it for her account. Officers with the Cape Coral Police Department responded
to Target on NE Pine Island Road on Wednesday for a past retail theft. Loss
Prevention at Target said that on Oct. 30, an unknown female, later identified
as Marlena Velez, 22, entered the store and grabbed items listed for sale.
Reports state that once Velez was at the self-checkout register, she did not
scan the items' barcodes. Instead, officers said she scanned a false barcode
with cheaper prices. Sixteen items of miscellaneous household goods and clothing
items were reported stolen. Officers said the total loss of the stolen goods was
valued at $500.32 after reviewing security footage. Velez recorded herself
picking out items inside the store and placing them in her car after exiting the
store. According to CCPD, officers located Velez and took her to the Lee County
Jail where she faces one count of petit theft more than $100, less than $750.

If you ever think your job is in jeopardy, then you're probably right. Hearing
the footsteps isn't a pleasant thing, but not hearing them is a fatal blow and
probably means you're not listening. It's always important to keep your ears to
the floorboards and read your environment as best you can every day, because as
we've seen over the last few years, no one is immune in this economy and what
you've done for them today drives where you'll be tomorrow. That "Doing More
With Less" philosophy isn't just an expression for the masses, it's for every
executive in every job and what more can you be doing?
