Whitepaper: Top 4 Factors to Consider for Your Retail Security System

Modern physical security solutions for retail offer benefits that go far beyond simply improving security. Today’s systems gather a wealth of data from video surveillance systems, access control, automatic license plate readers, identity management, and a variety of other sensors and systems. Yet without a fully unified software solution, it’s hard to see how all these puzzle pieces fit together.

The right physical security system can significantly impact your security team’s ability to target loss prevention, make informed decisions, and improve customer service.

When selecting the retail security system for your organization, there are four things to consider:

1. Actionable insights that improve daily retail operations.
2. An open architecture that scales as your business grows.
3. Support for cloud and hybrid-cloud security functionalities.
4. A unified platform that centralizes operation

The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact

Zebra Study Shows the Consequences of In-Store Crime
Loss prevention efforts pose issues for shoppers, associates

Retailers' efforts to combat in-store theft and crime may have unintended consequences.

According to the Zebra 17th Annual Global Shopper Study (which also surveyed retail associates and decision-makers), 78% of surveyed consumers say it’s annoying when products are locked up or secured within cases. Also, 77% are concerned retailers may raise prices to cover the cost of increasing theft and crime. And 71% are concerned the stores at which they shop are experiencing high levels of theft and crime.

In other findings, 70% say it’s hard to find an associate while shopping in stores. And one in five consumer respondents who left a store without getting what they needed say it’s because a retail associate wasn’t available to help, an increase during the past two years.

Fewer consumer respondents overall are satisfied with their shopping experiences this year than last year. In 2024, 81% are satisfied with the in-store experience and 79% with online shopping, while in 2023 85% were satisfied with both the in-store and online experiences.

And while the majority (78%) of consumers say self-checkout options improve their shopping experience, 68% say self-checkout lanes are lacking. Some report they have left a store without making a purchase because there were no self-checkout or contactless payment options.

Retail decision-maker findings

Close to eight-in-10 (78%) retail decision-maker respondents say they are under high pressure to minimize theft and loss, and are now investing in technology tools to assist. They currently view artificial intelligence technologies as the most helpful with loss prevention, closely followed by cameras, sensors and RFID.

While only 38% of retailer decision-maker respondents currently use AI-based prescriptive analytics for loss prevention, 50% say they plan to use it in the next one-to-three years for this purpose.

More than four-in-10 say they also plan to use computer vision (46%), self-checkout cameras and sensors (45%), and RFID tags and readers (42%) within the next three years, specifically for loss prevention.

Fighting Theft Without Turning Off Shoppers
Walmart Might Let Customers Unlock Those Annoying Anti-Theft Cases
Walmart may soon give you access to unlock cases and cabinets containing items that have been heavily targeted by thieves. Walmart is one of several retail chains in recent years that has taken a hard look at how it combats theft. While some stores hired extra security, Walmart instead started locking items inside cases.

While the process may deter theft, it doesn't exactly come without pain for the customer who just wants to grab their stuff, pay for it and leave the store without spending time waiting for an employee to show up with a key.

A recent report from Bloomberg reveals Walmart is currently testing new technology in some stores that will allow customers to unlock anti-theft cases using their smart phone.

For now, the trial run is being done with employees using smart phones to unlock cases. According to reports, the function will be rolled out to Walmart+ loyalty members if all goes well with the initial test. thegame730am.com

Holiday Shopping Season = More Crime?
Lynnwood police increase patrols to curb holiday season retail theft
The holiday season can usher in an influx of shoplifters so Lynnwood police are getting ready now for the problems they say are sure to follow. Retail theft is such an issue that Lynnwood police run emphasis operations throughout the year but these coming weeks could be critical.

Customers get a warm welcome at The Party Store at 196th St SW in Lynnwood, but owner Amir Motaghedi said plenty of troublemakers walk through the door as well.

We always have the shoplifting,” Motaghedi said. “My employees, they call me and say, ‘There are a few people in the store who are trying to steal something.’"

“If our employees are not standing in that area, they are coming with the bags and are looting everything that they can from the store," he said. Lynnwood police are very aware of the problem citywide and are ramping up retail theft emphasis operations. komonews.com

The Rise of Facial Recognition at Security Checkpoints
The Fastest Airport Security Line You Don’t Know About

Veteran fliers sing the praises of Touchless ID lanes that use facial recognition

A new program allows travelers to use their faces for identity verification at the security checkpoint—no driver’s license required. Situated at nine airports across the country, it’s often faster than other lines, and often the shortest.

Travelers flying Delta and United can already use the facial-recognition technology at eligible airports, while those flying American and Alaska should expect to see the option in the coming months, Transportation Security Administration officials say.

While some people express reservations about widespread use of biometrics, travelers on web forums across the internet joke that TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is the veteran flier’s best-kept secret.

“The first rule about Touchless PreCheck is you don’t talk about Touchless PreCheck,” one traveler wrote on Reddit.

Touchless ID allows eligible travelers to get past the security officer in an average of six to eight seconds, compared with 18 to 20 seconds for standard PreCheck screenings, TSA says. The program has read six million faces in its few years of operation.

It’s the latest step in the agency’s plan to modernize security screening and make it more efficient for travelers as the number of people passing through airports grows. Facial recognition is also starting to surface everywhere from baggage drop to the boarding area.

...The program requires travelers to opt in. TSA PreCheck is already optional. Using the facial-recognition line also requires explicit permission from travelers, says Anne Walbridge, traveler populations branch manager for TSA.

...Delta began using the technology in 2021, before any other U.S. airline. Delta and United travelers at New York’s LaGuardia, Los Angeles International and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport can use the lines. Some fliers can also use the checkpoints at Chicago’s O’Hare, Newark, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Detroit and New York’s John F. Kennedy.

...Many travelers say that because the verification compares their face to an existing photo, which the government already has, they don’t sweat the privacy aspects of the biometric process.

“My general feeling about it always has been that if Uncle Sam wants a picture of me, he can find it pretty easily,” says Joel Hart, a 42-year-old college admissions officer from Los Angeles. wsj.com

FTC Sinks Merger
Tapestry and Capri terminate merger agreement

After losing a lawsuit against the FTC, both companies agreed to cancel the deal, calling the legal process “uncertain and unlikely to be resolved.”

Tapestry and Capri Holdings have terminated their merger agreement, the companies said in separate press releases Thursday. Tapestry said terminating the agreement is in the best interest of both companies, “as the outcome of the legal process is uncertain and unlikely to be resolved” by the February deadline.

Last month, both companies appealed a federal court decision that blocked the deal, after the Federal Trade Commission sued Tapestry for anticompetitive behavior in April.

When Tapestry, the owner of Coach, Kate Spade and Stuart Weitzman, announced its intention to acquire Capri, which owns Michael Kors, Jimmy Choo and Versace, analysts said the $8.5 billion deal would have made Tapestry one of the largest luxury conglomerates in the United States, behind LVMH.

But the FTC took issue with Tapestry’s previous acquisition history — it bought Stuart Weitzman in 2015 and Kate Spade in 2017 — and accused the company of having a “goal to become a serial acquirer.” The FTC also said the deal would give Tapestry a dominant share of the accessible luxury handbag market, a term coined by Tapestry “to describe quality leather and craftsmanship handbags at an affordable price.” retaildive.com

Inflation Is Lower But Will Still Hit Holiday Sales
Holiday sales growth expected to stay below 10-year average

Retailers are likely to lean on discounts to drive sales as consumers continue feeling the pressure of inflation, according to an S&P Global Ratings report.

U.S. holiday sales growth is likely to slow to about 3%, down from 4.7% a year ago, S&P Global Ratings said in a Tuesday report. That’s below the 10-year average of 5.3%, the credit rating agency said.

Retailers that rely heavily on discretionary consumer spending face a higher likelihood of a credit rating downgrade within the next 24 months, S&P said. Apparel, accessories and speciality retailers have seen the largest increase in negative ratings in the last 12 months.

S&P said its outlook is based on declining yet persistent inflation that continues to pressure household budgets. The report also cited a late Thanksgiving holiday, which cuts five shopping days from the calendar this year, as an additional contributing factor that may weigh on sales. retaildive.com

CISOs in 2025:
Balancing security, compliance, and accountability
In this Help Net Security interview, Daniel Schwalbe, CISO at DomainTools, discusses the intensifying regulatory demands that have reshaped CISO accountability and daily decision-making. He outlines the skill sets future CISOs need, their key priorities for 2025, and how increased pressure impacts the role’s attractiveness and retention.

What specific regulatory demands have heightened the CISO’s accountability, and how has this affected their daily decision-making?

A recent change in the regulatory landscape that directly affected CISOs employed by publicly traded companies and heightened their accountability was the adoption of new rules by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), covering Cybersecurity Risk Management, Strategy, Governance, and Incident Disclosure by Public Companies. The SEC now mandates that companies disclose material cybersecurity incidents within four business days via financial filings. It must include detailed information about the incident’s nature, timing, and impact on the company’s financial health.

Additionally the new rules require companies to include cybersecurity risk assessments and management processes in their annual financial disclosures. The new rules also introduced specific personal accountability for CISOs and other members of the C-Suite, with an emphasis on the fact that executives are expected to understand their individual responsibilities for ensuring the accuracy of their company’s financial disclosures.

Another regulatory update that affects financial institutions regulated by the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), which includes any bank or brokerage doing business on Wall Street, increases the personal liability of CISOs. The rule changes require that CISOs, along with the organization’s highest-ranking executive, personally certify their organization’s compliance with the state’s Cybersecurity Regulations on an annual basis.

These changes to regulatory demands will likely affect the daily decision-making of a CISO who works for a company that is subject to the new rules in the following ways: helpnetsecurity.com

'Unacceptable Cybersecurity Risks to the Country'
National cyber director calls for streamlined security regulations

Harry Coker Jr. assured critical infrastructure and private sector stakeholders that while standards are necessary, there is a need to harmonize burdensome compliance demands.

AdvertisementThe U.S. must take collective action to address “unacceptable” cybersecurity risks to the country, National Cyber Director Harry Coker Jr. said in a speech at Columbia University’s Conference on Cyber Regulation and Harmonization in New York City. Coker called for federal authorities to work together with critical infrastructure providers, private sector companies and other stakeholders.

Cybersecurity threats like the China state-linked Volt Typhoon present unacceptable risks to the U.S., Coker said, and more investments are required to build long term cyber resilience. As part of that strategy, companies need to ensure that cybersecurity is as much of a focus as quarterly profits.

At the same time, Coker called for the government to streamline its regulations and harmonize compliance demands for the benefit of the private sector and critical infrastructure providers. This could allow CISOs and other security leaders to spend more time mitigating their own organizational cyber risk, he said.

Coker’s speech highlights a key concern for the Biden administration as it winds down its final months in office and moves into a new phase of implementing its national cybersecurity strategy.

The U.S. is facing a major threat to critical infrastructure — sophisticated state-linked hackers have targeted the telecom industry in recent months — while other industries like energy, water utilities and other sectors face a combination of threats from nation states and criminal ransomware groups. cybersecuritydive.com

'Broad and Significant Cyber Espionage Campaign'
Feds find ‘broad and significant’ China espionage campaign in US telecom networks

The FBI and CISA warned the nation-state affiliated malicious activities are extensive and include the theft of sensitive call records and court-ordered information.

A string of China-linked attacks on U.S. telecom networks are part of a “broad and significant cyber espionage campaign,” federal officials said Wednesday.

The China-affiliated attackers compromised multiple telecommunications networks to steal call records and court-ordered information related to U.S. law enforcement requests.

The widespread compromise included “private communications of a limited number of individuals who are primarily involved in government or political activity,” the FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said in a joint statement. cybersecuritydive.com

Amazon's Return to Work Policy Fight Continues
Amazon makes it harder for disabled employees to work from home
Amazon.com Inc. is making it harder for disabled employees to get permission to work from home, underscoring the tech giant’s determination to get its corporate workforce back to the office five days a week.

The company recently told employees with disabilities that it was implementing a more rigorous vetting process, both for new requests to work from home and applications to extend existing arrangements. Affected workers must submit to a “multilevel leader review” and could be required to return to the office for monthlong trials to determine if accommodations meet their needs.

The revised disability policy — which hasn’t previously been reported — is roiling a workforce already alienated by a five-day return-to-office mandate that’s scheduled to begin in January.

Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy says the return-to-office requirement will strengthen the company’s culture, which he believes has suffered since the pandemic and become overly bureaucratic. But the policy made Amazon a tech industry outlier and is seen by some employees as a way to get people to quit and shrink the workforce.

Amazon has denied having an ulterior motive and says the new disability policy reflects its broader return-to-office philosophy.

“We understand that this is going to be a transition and we’re working with our employees to make it as easy as possible,” Amazon spokesperson Margaret Callahan said in a statement. “We continue to believe that the advantages of being together in the office are significant. When in-person accommodations are needed, we’ll provide them, and in some cases, offer an exception to working from the office.” She declined to say how many requests have been approved. fortune.com

Fighting Back Against the Rise of Temu & Shein
Amazon takes on Temu & Shein with low-priced storefront
Amazon is not sitting back while low-cost shopping apps such as Temu and Shein grow in popularity.

The e-tail giant is launching Amazon Haul, a new dedicated section of its U.S. e-commerce site and shopping app that offers fashion, home, lifestyle, electronics, and other products with what Amazon describes as "ultra-low" prices of $20 and under, and with typical delivery times of one to two weeks.

While nothing in Amazon’s announcement of Amazon Haul specifies where products sold via the storefront will originate from, media reports indicated that in a June meeting with select sellers of Chinese products Amazon said it would launch a discount storefront featuring their merchandise.

This business model would enable Chinese sellers to avoid using the hosted Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) fulfillment network to ship products to U.S. consumers, and let Amazon more effectively compete with budget-priced shopping apps that primarily sell Chinese merchandise, such as Temu and Shein. chainstoreage.com

Memphis, TN: Three women caught in stolen Maxima with stolen merchandise
Three women were arrested Tuesday after police say they were caught shoplifting in a stolen car with a fake drive-out tag. Australia Butler, 28, Sarah Benson, 31, and Jayla Rhoten, 21, were taken into custody outside the Family Dollar on Quince in East Memphis. Butler and Benson were charged with theft of property, vandalism, altering or forging an auto tag, and possessing a vehicle with an altered serial number. All three were charged with possessing tools to interfere with an anti-theft security device. Police said on Oct. 19, a white 2017 Nissan Maxima was stolen from the Sam’s Club. Surveillance video showed a dark-colored Maxima driven by a woman pull next to the white Nissan and man dive into the vehicle and drive it off the lot. Tuesday, members of the Memphis Police Department’s Auto Theft Task Force, along with the Appling Farms Task Force and Bartlett Police Crime Suppression Unit, spotted the stolen white Maxima at Quince and Perkins and followed the car to the Family Dollar Store. Police said Benson was driving the car, and Butler and Rhoten were passengers. The women were detained inside the store. They said Benson had several items from the Family Dollar concealed inside her purse, and Butler had a generic keyfob programmed to operate the stolen Maxima in her pocket. Officers said they also recovered a large amount of presumably stolen merchandise inside the vehicle. Police said some of the items still had security devices, and they found a large magnet to remove retail security devices on top of the center console.  wreg.com

Atlanta, GA: Video Released: Atlanta Police ask for tips to find pair who robbed a Dollar General, shot off-duty Security Guard
A new surveillance video shows two suspects accused of shooting a man while trying to rob a Dollar General in Atlanta. It happened on Oct. 9 at the Dollar General on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW. The 40-second surveillance video clearly shows two men dressed in all black -- both wearing surgical masks -- just seconds before the pair tried to rob the store and shot an off-duty security guard who tried to intervene. The gunshot victim is 32-year-old Corey Lampley. 11Alive's Angelina Salcedo spoke with him last month after the terrifying incident. He was fully dressed in his security guard uniform and shopping at the Dollar General Store on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive when it all went down. "'You know what it is, everybody! It's a robbery!' He explained that as soon as the suspects pulled out their guns, so did he. He said the 15 people in the store went running while he chased one of the men. "Perpetrator number two cocked his gun, and when I turned around, that's when I got hit in the shoulder," Lampley said. Lampley was shot several times. After making sure that everyone was OK, he walked himself to a nearby fire station and waited for police to show up.  11alive.com
