How Organized Retail Crime is Threatening the Retail Industry

Organized Retail Crime (ORC), the coordinated theft of merchandise for resale, has grown exponentially in the U.S., necessitating increased security measures and even causing store closures. The issue is projected to escalate, demanding modern, tactical security solutions that allow retailers and law enforcement to combat ORC while maintaining a pleasant shopping environment.

Cloud video security is a powerful tool in fighting ORC. OpenEye's comprehensive guide delves into the current methods for defining and measuring ORC's impact on businesses and the economy. It explores effective security strategies for mitigating inventory loss and enhancing the shopping experience. The guide also highlights the advantages of cloud video surveillance in tackling ORC, and how the integration of other security systems can provide a more robust solution for retailers.

The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact

Weaving Radio-Emitting Threads Into Clothing to Stop Theft
Retailers Weigh Putting Radio-Emitting Threads Into Clothes to Curb Thefts

A conductive ink that emits radio signals is drawing interest from merchants like Zara, eager to outsmart thieves.

To stop shoplifting, merchants have tried everything from adding more guards and cameras to placing products under lock and key to deploying new security tags attached to garments. Still, theft—which can be due to both outsiders and employees—resulted in an estimated $73 billion in lost sales for retailers in the US alone in 2022, according to the latest survey released by the National Retail Federation. In the UK, losses from store thefts doubled in 2023, to £3.3 billion ($4.3 billion), from the previous year, according to the British Retail Consortium.

Now retailers are considering something new: weaving radio-emitting threads into some clothing, turning the garments themselves into anti-theft devices.

Zara owner Inditex SA, the world’s biggest publicly held clothing retailer, is among those who have studied the change. The retail giant in Arteixo, Spain, has talked with a small Spanish technology company, Myruns, and telecommunications operator Telefónica SA about the possible application of a system based on an anti-theft alarm product so thin it’s imperceptible to the naked eye, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named discussing private information. An Inditex spokesman says the company does not plan to carry out in-store tests of the technology.

Retailers around the world are grappling with ways to cut losses from so-called inventory shrink, which drew global attention in the years after the pandemic when companies blamed rampant theft for disappointing sales, and videos of “smash and grab” incidents of flash mobs storming stores went viral.

The technology from Myruns, in San Sebastian, Spain, may be just one of the efforts to curb thefts that have been studied by Inditex, which declined to comment on specific projects. Myruns’ product, which one of the people says is five times thinner than a human hair, or about a thousandth of an inch, uses a conductive ink derived from cellulose to transmit signals. It can set off alarms if someone walks out of a shop with items whose woven-in tags haven’t been deactivated, according to the people. The novel ink replaces aluminum, the main material used in most alarms. That would mean retailers wouldn’t need to rely on the metal for alarms, making the devices potentially biodegradable and supporting the garments’ recyclability. bloomberg.com

U.S. Retailers Have Holiday Safety Fears
Understaffing, lack of anti-theft technology leading to worker fear about holidays
With retail crime rising in recent years, many U.S. retail workers are apprehensive about the holiday shopping season.

According to Motorola Solutions’ second-annual U.S. Retail Worker Safety Report, a majority of American retail workers (57%) report feeling unsafe going into the peak holiday shopping season. Many retail managers and staff surveyed said they have experienced increases in various forms of crime in their stores in the past year, with petty theft (66%), grab and runs (48%) and hostile customer interactions (46%) being reported by many. One-in-10 retail workers surveyed also said they have experienced physical attacks from customers.

Motorola Solutions’ data shows that over 65% of retail workers said they expect to be understaffed this holiday season, which will impact how safe they feel going into peak shopping. More than two-thirds of respondents (68%) who expect their stores to be understaffed said they don't feel safe because of it, and 50% said they are concerned for the safety of their shoppers.

The survey also found that retailers are making more calls to first responders. More than 20% of those surveyed said public safety personnel such as police, EMS and fire are being called to their stores at least once per week, an increase of 16% over 2023. Emergency personnel are called to stores two-to-three times per month for 17% of respondents.

In terms of solutions for retail crime, respondents pointed to access control systems (35%), license plate readers (32%), panic buttons (32%) and body cameras (20%) as measures that make them feel safer. However, few retail workers reported having those security measures in place. Of those surveyed, 12% said they have access control systems, 9% have panic buttons, 7% have license plate readers and 6% are using body cameras. A majority of respondents said that their stores have more traditional security systems in place, such as video security systems (79%) and alarm systems (59%). chainstoreage.com

56% of UK Retailer Workers Witnessed Theft
U.K. Retail Workers Cite Increased Safety Concerns Ahead of Holiday Shopping Season as One in Four Consider Quitting their Job

Independent report from Motorola Solutions reveals retail workers’ desires for enhanced safety and security measures to help keep them safer at work

Motorola Solutions released a U.K. Retail Worker Safety Report based on a YouGov survey of over 1,000 retail workers, highlighting significant safety concerns ahead of the holiday season. The survey reveals that 56% of workers witnessed petty theft, 31% encountered organized crime rings, and 50% experienced hostile customer interactions in the past year.

Four in ten workers express concern for their personal safety during the festive shopping season, with almost half feeling less safe during evening shifts. The report emphasizes the role of technology in enhancing safety, with 28% of workers favoring panic buttons, while 70% believe body cameras effectively de-escalate dangerous situations.

Retail workers in the U.K. are increasingly becoming the victims of violent crime and are concerned for their personal safety during the holiday shopping season, according to Motorola Solutions’ U.K. Retail Worker Safety Report. The survey of over 1,000 retail workers sheds further light on the extent to which theft, organised crime and in-store violence are occurring on the country’s high streets.

Market research company YouGov conducted the U.K. survey in October 2024 to gauge retail workers’ perspectives about safety and workplace security measures. The results show that security technologies - panic buttons that help workers notify colleagues for backup and systems that allow them to quickly connect with supervisors, lock doors and review real-time video of unfolding incidents - make people feel safer at work. Similar independent surveys were conducted in the U.S. and in Australia and New Zealand, countries also dealing with high retail crime rates.  stocktitan.net

Retail Job Additions Plummet Despite Seasonal Surge
October retail hiring hit a low not seen since before the pandemic

Actual seasonal job gains may fall below 2023 numbers but slightly surpass 2022 numbers, analysis from Challenger, Gray & Christmas indicates.

Although seasonal hiring announcements for retail and transportation reached the highest levels since 2021, actual job additions for both sectors in October dropped to the lowest point since before the pandemic, according to a Nov. 7 report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.

Based on nonseasonally adjusted data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the firm reported that retailers added 124,700 jobs, marking the lowest October total since 2018. Transportation and warehousing added 61,300 jobs, or the lowest number since 2019.

Although employers announced plans to hire 659,850 seasonal workers, Challenger predicted that actual seasonal job gains for retail will fall below the 2023 total of 564,200. Overall, retailers will likely add about 520,000 new jobs, the firm said. This will slightly surpass the 509,300 jobs added in the final quarter of 2022, but mark the second-lowest total since 2009.

Total nonfarm payroll only rose by 12,000 jobs in October, but economists cautioned against panic and remained optimistic, citing temporary disruptions such as hurricanes and strikes. Generally, the market is still angled for a “soft landing” for the rest of 2024, they said.

Job seekers are showing increased interest in part-time seasonal work in 2024, especially in retail, according to an iCIMS report. Many job candidates want a part-time role, with nearly three-quarters saying they’d prefer it over full-time seasonal work. retaildive.com

Largest Year-Over-Year Total Retail Sales Surge Since Nov. 2023
Retail sales stage comeback in October
Retail sales bounced back strongly in October as the economy remained in good shape and consumers moved past concerns about a port strike and other issues that put a crimp in September’s sales.

That’s according to the National Retail Federation, whose CNBC/NRF Retail Monitor powered by Affinity Solutions showed that core retail sales (excluding restaurants, automobiles dealers and gasoline stations) rose 0.83% month-over-month in October and up 4.59% year-over-year. That compared to a decrease of 0.28% month-over-month and an increase of 0.94% year-over-year in September.

Total retail sales (including restaurants but excluding automobiles and gasoline) were up 0.74% month-over-month and up 4.13% unadjusted year-over-year in October, according to the Retail Monitor. That compared to a decrease of 0.32% month-over-month and an increase of 0.55% year-over-year in September, when shoppers showed caution due to geopolitical tensions, a strike at East and Gulf Coast ports and the end of student loan relief programs.

The year-over-year increase for total sales was the largest since 4.24% in November 2023 while the year-over-year increase for core sales was the largest since 4.76% in August 2023, NRF noted. Total sales were up 2.13% year-over-year for the first 10 months of 2024, and core sales were up 2.42%. chainstoreage.com

POS Connect: The Power of Video and Transaction Data

POS Connect in OpenEye Web Services reduces shrink, improves customer service, and streamlines investigations by combining your point-of-sale data with the power of video verification.

With POS Connect, you’ll receive a complete picture of every transaction in your workplace. Notice something suspicious? Our robust platform offers customizable search capabilities to quickly locate events of interest. Just as important, you’ll also have the tools to put this information in the right hands for further investigation.

Unlock the Advantages of POS Monitoring with POS Connect

Point-of-sale data is some of the most valuable data intelligence businesses have.

Records of transactions provide crucial insights into what is and isn’t working for your company, and receipt data can get you that. This is why POS monitoring is so vital for organizations everywhere. Having a real-time, searchable stream of transactions can be just the edge many businesses need to boost their workplace operations. But while your POS system may reflect what was purchased, it might not be giving you the full picture.

This is where POS Connect comes in. By integrating your security video with your POS system, business owners can streamline their monitoring and get a better understanding of what’s happening during transactions.

There are many benefits to POS Connect:

1. Increase Business Intelligence

One of the greatest benefits of POS Connect is an increase in business intelligence. All the transactional data coming from a POS system is valuable, and when combined with video, that information becomes even more complex. POS Connect offers a way to interpret that data and see what factors are affecting your customers’ purchases.

2. Video Verification

Receipt data without any visual insights into those transactions can leave you with a major blind spot in your security. Because of that, video verification, or being able to see what’s happening during every purchase or refund, is another one of the primary benefits of POS Connect. Business owners can see how employees are handling transactions and where help may be needed around your company.

3. Customizable Search

The hundreds or potentially thousands of transactions that occur in a given month through a point-of-sale system make the task of sorting that much more daunting. Even when combined with video, it can still be difficult to find exactly what you’re looking for if you must review each transaction individually. Luckily, POS Connect offers the ability to easily search through the many transactions present in your system.

4. Transaction Alerts

Receiving real-time transaction alerts can help lay the groundwork for better business intelligence, which in turn can help you identify costly problems of fraud, operator error, or poor customer experiences. POS Connect allows you to customize alerts so you can keep an eye out for tactics or behaviors that often lead to transaction discrepancies.

5. Streamline Investigations

Investigations can be slow processes, so identifying any bottlenecks on your end can help speed everything up if law enforcement is involved. Customizable search with POS Connect can help with this, as well as the ability to quickly export security video and transaction data in OpenEye Web Services and send it over to any parties that will need it.

Cyberattack Hits Grocery Chain
Grocery giant Ahold Delhaize’s US operations disrupted by cyberattack

The parent company said the disruption forced it to take certain systems offline and affected some pharmacies and e-commerce services.

Ahold Delhaize said in a Friday statement that it had “detected a cybersecurity issue within its U.S. network” and was investigating with help from outside experts, but did not indicate what might have impacted its online infrastructure. The company said it took some systems down and notified authorities about the incident.

Hannaford’s e-commerce services remained unavailable Monday morning, continuing an outage that began last week. Websites operated by Ahold Delhaize’s other U.S. banners appeared to be operating normally after earlier displaying warnings about potential disruptions.

Ahold Delhaize said all of its U.S. stores were open but that the IT problems had affected some pharmacies and e-commerce functions.

Ahold Delhaize has remained tight-lipped about the extent of the cybersecurity issue, which hit just weeks away from the start of winter holidays in the U.S. — a traditionally busy sales period for grocers.

“This issue and subsequent mitigating actions have affected certain Ahold Delhaize USA brands and services including a number of pharmacies and certain e-commerce operations,” Ahold Delhaize said in the Friday press release. The company did not provide further details on the extent of the impacts for each of its five U.S. brick-and-mortar grocery chains. cybersecuritydive.com

Stop & Shop Stores Feeling the Impact
Empty shelves at Stop & Shop tied to cybersecurity issue
AdvertisementThe parent company of Stop & Shop supermarkets, Ahold Delhaize USA, disclosed on Friday that it had experienced a cybersecurity issue and that some of its services had been impacted. The company doesn’t specify when it detected the cybersecurity issue, but it says it took steps to secure the issue and investigate the incident. Some systems, like the self-scanner, were taken offline for protection.

As a result of these steps, the company says some services that include “pharmacies and certain e-commerce operations” were impacted. Signs indicating a “global outage” have been observed at Stop & Shop stores in Southern New England.

Shoppers who spoke with NBC 10 News said they hope the issue is fixed before Thanksgiving rolls around. "A lot of products were not available because of this situation, I guess, which we weren’t aware of," said one customer.

"The premade salad, there was like nothing on the shelves at all, I was trying to get something easy for dinner, but there was just nothing there which is a little disappointing," said Nick Desjardins from Rehoboth. "It’s normally a reliable place to go shopping. It’s cheaper than a lot of other places, so it’s definitely surprising to hear, so I hope it gets fixed soon."

It's not just store items taking a hit. The outage is also affecting pharmacies within some of the stores. turnto10.com

'Controversial UN Cybercrime Treaty'
US hopes to leverage UN cybercrime treaty toward ransomware fight

The Biden administration decided to back the controversial accord, despite widespread concerns about potential human rights abuses.

The Biden administration will back a controversial United Nations cybercrime treaty, which has come under fire by certain U.S. legislators and digital rights advocates who are concerned the international agreement will expose political dissidents and other groups to abuse by authoritarian regimes.

The treaty, originally proposed by Russia, calls for international cooperation to investigate serious cybercrimes. For example, law enforcement in one country could gain access to electronic evidence stored in another country. The Biden administration agreed to back the treaty after extensive outreach from non-government organizations, human rights advocates, technology firms and other stakeholders, senior administration officials said in a briefing Sunday.

International cooperation has been covered by the Budapest Convention, however neither Russia or China were part of that agreement. After extensive deliberation, U.S. officials still see the U.N. Cybercrime Convention as an agreement that could help make progress in the global fight against ransomware and other illicit activity. cybersecuritydive.com

Critical Veeam CVE targeted by new ransomware variant

Multiple ransomware variants are now targeting the CVE, which has a CVSS of 9.8. For customers, the risk of exploitation is only increasing.

'Tis the Season for Counterfeits
Counterfeit spikes and protection strategies for the holiday season

Counterfeit purchases spike before seasonal holidays and during designated sales periods, such as Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the January sales. Protect your brand, products and consumers effectively this year by targeting your online brand protection efforts on the most critical channels.

The terms 'Black Friday' and 'Cyber Monday' were coined to describe the days of bargain-hunting frenzy that traditionally follow Thanksgiving in the US and mark the start of the Christmas shopping seasons in many countries.

The days, which fall on 29 November and 2 December respectively this year, offer consumers the chance to bag a bargain as retailers slash their prices. As Black Friday and Cyber Monday draw closer, brand owners will be looking forward to an uptick in sales. However, this busy shopping period does not come without risks for brand owners, with those same retailers also bracing for a massive increase in fake goods for sale on online platforms and social media sites.

Counterfeit goods spike in busy shopping periods

Studies have shown a major increase in counterfeit purchases online in the run-up to the holiday period, including Black Friday and Cyber Monday, as well as in the January sales that traditionally follow in the new year.

Sales periods tempt consumers into making impulse purchases by enticing them with short-term discounts and adverts online and on social media, and these price drops and online sales make it harder for people to spot fakes. Counterfeiters use seasonal promotions to market fake goods to consumers and, mixed in with legitimate offers, they can mislead the unwary. These fake goods not only include counterfeit luxury and fashion goods but also fake toys, electrical goods, pharmaceuticals, mobile phones, chargers, alcohol and beauty products.

The 2023 Review of Notorious Counterfeiting and Piracy Markets issued by the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) earlier this year highlights ongoing concerns over sales of counterfeits through e-commerce platforms and social media, as well as the growing use of influencers to promote fake and ‘dupe’ products.

The report references a growing number of online business models being adopted by criminals as they bring goods to market, from domain names (cybersquatting, domain name parking and affiliate marketing) and email phishing to e-commerce marketplaces, social media sites, apps, gaming and ‘cyberlockers’ (used to distribute pirate content anonymously).

Amazon Hack?
Was Amazon Hacked—Have Your Account And Password Been Compromised?
Amazon has confirmed that some data was breached during the spate of MOVEit software exploits that started during May, 2023. The MOVEit cyber attacks hit several large organizations, including the BBC, British Airways, Shell and several government agencies, as hackers targeted a critical SQL injection vulnerability, CVE-2023-34362, in the software. But as the news breaks, more than a year on, that Amazon data was breached, customers are now wanting to know if their accounts are safe and whether passwords should be changed.

Amazon Has Not Experienced A Security Event, A Spokesperson Said

A statement released by Amazon spokesperson Adam Montgomery on Nov. 11, has clarified the nature of the data breach and denied that Amazon or Amazon Web Services had “experienced a security incident.” The MOVEit exploit impacted an unnamed third-party property management vendor that includes Amazon as one of its customers. “We were notified about a security event at one of our property management vendors that impacted several of its customers including Amazon,” the Amazon spokesperson, Adam Montgomery, said.

Reporting at forbes.com, contributor Lars Daniel said the breach was carried out by a threat actor going by the name of Nam3L3ss, oh the irony. They recently posted data from 25 organizations, including Amazon, and warned there is an archive in excess of 250TB that includes “entire databases from exposed web sources including mysql, postgres, SQL Server databases and backups, azure databases and backups etc." forbes.com

Based on his reviewing of surveillance footage in the shop and an inspection of the premises, the manager said, “Nothing in the vault was touched, but I’m still ascertaining what’s missing in the cabinets. We have gift boxes, travel cases, some accessories like hats, but nothing as valuable as what’s in the vault.” Linn said APD is using “a lot of resources” to investigate the incident, a coordinated burglary. The same suspect is also believed to have stolen several items the same night from a nearby Dollarama where she also threatened to use bear spray on employees when confronted. According to the GoFundMe campaign, the Walmart customer service employee was sprayed first, and when the greeter came to help her, the suspect sprayed him directly in his eyes, burning his corneas, while he was on the ground. Since the attack, he has been struggling with post traumatic stress disorder and healing from his injuries.   reddeeradvocate.com

Education is a broad term usually defined by an individual as a singular focus with an end result that oftentimes stagnates the brain and limits horizons. Reaching milestones is incredibly important, but keeping your curiosity and wonderment is the key to reaching beyond. No singular degree or certification will bring you the success - it merely opens the door to more learning and the realization that if you don't know something, you go find someone who does and learn it from them.

Just a Thought,
Gus
