Violent crime was a key midterm voting issue, but what does the data say?
 Political
candidates around the United States released
thousands of ads focusing on violent crime this year, and most
registered voters saw the issue as
very important in the Nov. 8 midterm elections. But official statistics from
the federal government paint a complicated picture when it comes to recent
changes in the U.S. violent crime rate.
1. Around six-in-ten
registered voters (61%) said violent crime was very important when making their
decision about who to vote for in this year’s congressional elections.
2. Republican voters were much more likely than
Democratic voters to see violent crime as a key voting issue this year.
3. Older voters far more likely than younger ones to
see violent crime as a key election issue. Three-quarters of
registered voters ages 65 and older say violent crime was a very important
voting issue.
4. Black voters were particularly likely to say violent
crime was a very important midterm issue.
5. Annual government surveys from the Bureau of Justice
Statistics show no recent increase in the U.S. violent crime rate. In
2021, the
most recent year with available data, there were 16.5 violent crimes for
every 1,000 Americans ages 12 and older. That was statistically unchanged from
the year before.
6. The FBI also estimates that there was no increase in
the violent crime rate in 2021.
7. While the total
U.S. violent crime rate does not appear to have increased recently, the most
serious form of violent crime – murder – has risen significantly during the
pandemic.
There are many reasons why voters might be concerned about violent crime, even
if official statistics do not show an increase in the nation’s total violent
crime rate. One important consideration is that official statistics for 2022 are
not yet available. Voters might be reacting to an increase in violent crime that
has yet to surface in annual government reports. Some estimates from
nongovernmental organizations do point to an increase in certain kinds of
violent crime in 2022.

Midterm Elections Deliver Some Good News for Criminal Legal Reform
Bail reform was perhaps the biggest test of the false and exaggerated crime
panic messaging. In recent years, the nation has succeeded in paring back
harmful cash-bail policies. But after years of Fox News, local TV
stations, and other news outlets pummeling the public with
disingenuous stories about crime, some states, like Alabama and Ohio,
passed ballot measures that may make it harder for people to make bail. And
while Democrat Kathy Hochul won the New York governor's race over anti-bail
zealot Lee Zeldin, Hochul also campaigned on toughening bail laws.
District attorney races across the country have shown mixed results, with
candidates who support ending cash bail both winning and losing across the
country. While there was plenty of cause for optimism in the midterm elections,
it's clear that progressives and reformers must redouble their efforts if they
want to put an end to this country’s excessively harsh criminal punishment
system.
Bail Reform
This election season, bail reform was on the ballot across the country, whether
it was
a topic at candidate forums or a
talking point in campaign ads.
In some states, constitutional amendments on the ballot will likely have major
implications for those accused of crimes and their loved ones.

65% Decrease in Law Enforcement Deaths - 195 Year-to-Date
10 Deaths in October: 6 Gunfire - 3 Auto-Related - 1 Heart Attack
In October, 10 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty.
The cause breakdown (October 2022 only) is: 2 automobile crash, 6 gunfire, 1
heart attack, and 1 vehicular assault. This means that the year-to-date
total for line of duty deaths is at 195, a 65% decrease from the same
time last year.

76,000 California Prisoners Set to be Released
California DAs Want Prison Officials to Explain Early Release of Violent
Criminals
 The
California District Attorneys Association wants the state prison system to
explain why it is releasing violent prisoners who haven’t earned sufficient
rehabilitation credits early from prison. In some cases,
they have re-offended and committed even more serious
crimes, the CDAA said Monday.
“California Gov. Gavin Newsom will be letting another
76,000 prisoners out of state prisons – on his own authority through
Executive Order – violent crime is spiking in California’s cities,” the Globe
reported May 2021. The CDCR expanded “good time credits” without criteria to
justify early release of dangerous inmates.
Under the newest regulations, “non-violent” second strike inmates would see
an increase in number of credits earned, going from 50% to 66%. Effectively,
this would reduce sentences even more, going from half the time off to
66% of the time off. Those eligible for the new credit amount includes prisoners
convicted for domestic violence, animal cruelty, human trafficking, and
weapons possessions with prior convictions.
“They’re doing it in secret because they don’t want to be called out,” El
Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson told CBS.
Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) weighed in Thursday on the District
Attorneys’ demand: “I firmly stand with the California District Attorneys
Association in their call for transparency on how rehabilitative credits are
calculated. Violent criminals should not be released early from prison if
they fail to meet the necessary credit threshold.”
“CDAA calls upon CDCR officials to immediately explain the system for releasing
violent criminals–especially those who have not fully engaged in
rehabilitation programs.” said Greg Totten, CDAA Chief Executive Officer.

San Francisco voters affirmed a shift to the center in Tuesday’s
election, largely embracing Mayor London

moderate candidates and causes and giving a boost to her political agenda from
public safety to education.
The results reflected a San Francisco electorate discontent with city governance
many criticize as dysfunctional and demanding quality-of-life improvements. The
political picture in San Francisco mirrored national trends as urban voters
worried about crime and homelessness shift right.
District attorney Brooke Jenkins declared victory, leaning into her strong lead
although 100,000 votes were still left to be counted.
Early results reflect the growing power of moderates, YIMBYs and tech in the
city, and show candidates focused on practical solutions are appealing most to
fed-up San Franciscans.
Voters will look for the Mayor to address open-air drug use and overdoses
(with the Tenderloin safe injection site closing Jan. 1st),
bring down property crime, tackle the
housing and homelessness crises
Breed and the district attorney have no magic wand to fix crime but will likely
be held responsible for rates, despite some forces outside their control,
including judges and the economy.
Breed, like many politicians nationwide, pivoted a year ago to be tougher on
crime and more pro-police as resident anger rose, culminating in the recall
of Boudin, who Breed criticized at times.
San Francisco State University political science professor Jason McDaniel said
early election results affirmed Breed’s moderate values.
“There’s a clear majority of the city that is at least
not endorsing progressive candidates and policies and is giving the mayor
more say,” he said.

After 10 months in office, Manhattan DA has nothing to Bragg about
The Manhattan district attorney’s first year
on the job is nothing to Bragg about — even by the most forgiving of standards.
 Since
taking office in January, the former civil rights lawyer and a former federal
prosecutor has overseen a 30.5% surge in major crimes in Manhattan compared
to the same time in 2021, NYPD data through Oct. 30 show. Citywide, the
spike is at 29.6%.
Crime is rampant in the Midtown South Precinct, whose confines are a hub for
city workers, residents, and tourists and includes Times Square, Penn Station,
and Macy’s flagship store in Herald Square. Murders this year are up 14%
(24 from 21) from 2021, while burglaries have jumped
45% (2,476 from 1,710), grand larceny has
increased a whopping 53% (9,648 from 6,295) and
robbery has soared 32% (1,785 from 1,356).
Bragg’s progressive policies include not seeking bail or prison time for most
defendants and downgrading certain felonies to misdemeanors, as outlined in
his
now infamous “Day 1” memo.
Along the way, he’s attracted a growing army of detractors — everyone from
everyday New Yorkers, victims’ families, and even a gubernatorial candidate who
says he will remove Bragg from office if elected.

DOJ: Northern Michigan Man Gets 75 Months for Leaving Pipe Bombs at 2 Cell Phone
Stores as Part of a $5 Million Extortion Plot
BAY CITY – A Whittemore, Michigan, resident, John Douglas Allen, 76,
was sentenced today to 75 months on two separate criminal cases related to a $5
million extortion plot using shrapnel-filled pipe bombs the defendant placed
outside cellphone stores in Cheboygan, and Sault Ste Marie, Michigan.
According to court records, Allen admitted that on September 15, 2021, at
approximately 7:36 pm, he placed a United States Postal Service (USPS) box with
black tape on it and a wire coming out of it outside an AT&T Store in Sault
Ste. Marie, Michigan. Later that evening, Allen placed another USPS box with
black tape on it and a wire coming out of it outside of a Verizon Store in
Cheboygan, Michigan.
In addition, threat notes demanding $5 million were placed on cell phone
towers in the area as well as mailed to the telecommunications companies.
Based on video footage taken from the cell phone stores and other nearby
businesses, as well as an exhaustive investigation by law enforcement,
agents were able to determine that Allen was the person who left the packages
outside of the stores.

What the 10 fastest-growing metro areas reveal about the world of remote work
By the end of 2020, an estimated 45% jobs, or 1.79 million in total, were
eligible for remote work in the Bay Area, according to the Bay Area Council
Economic Institute. Since then, data on which downtown facilities were actually
being used by workers, provided by Kastle Systems, has consistently shown that
San Francisco lags behind other major cities in return-to-work progress.
And just last month, San Francisco Mayor London Breed said that remote work had
become a permanent fixture in many people’s lives, and would likely cause a
“major hit” to the city’s budget as commercial property values plummet. “The
fact that, until mid-2022, most of the city’s vacant space is on the sublease
market, and still generating rent for the building owners, is an indication of
the lag between a downturn in office demand, and a downturn in property tax,”
the San Francisco Controller’s Office wrote in a memorandum the same month.
The new study from the Kenan Institute suggests that downtown San Francisco
had to die so its surrounding metro area could thrive.

WHO reports 90% drop in world COVID-19 deaths since February
The World Health Organization chief on Wednesday said a nearly 90% drop in
recent COVID-19 deaths globally compared to nine months ago provides “cause for
optimism,” but still urged vigilance against the pandemic as variants
continue to crop up.
Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that last week just over
9,400 deaths linked to the
coronavirus
were reported to the WHO. In February of this year, he said, weekly deaths had
topped 75,000 globally.
“We have come a long way, and this is definitely cause for optimism. But we
continue to call on all governments, communities and individuals to remain
vigilant,” he said at a virtual news conference from the WHO's Geneva
headquarters.

Retail Employment Highest Since 2016
Hiring update: Seasonal hiring slows but overall retail employment up
Employment in the retail sector is higher than last year. According to
the BLS, 15,822,300 Americans are employed in retail, the highest October for
the sector since 2016, when 15,899,500 were employed.
Similarly, transportation and warehousing employs 6,547,200, the highest
total since the BLS began tracking. It is also the highest monthly total of
any month with the exception of last December, when the industry employed
6,689,000, according to non-seasonally adjusted figures.
Retailers added 162,000 in October, according to BLS, down 28% from the
224,400 jobs added in October last year. Meanwhile, transportation and
warehousing added 65,800 jobs, a 46% decrease from the 121,600 new positions
added in the same month last year.
The National Retail Federation expects retailers will hire between 450,000
and 600,000 seasonal workers, compared with 669,800 seasonal hires in 2021.
Some of this hiring may have been pulled into October as many retailers were
eager to supplement their workforces to meet increased consumer demand, the NRF
said.

Nicole weakens to tropical storm after making landfall in Florida
Nicole made landfall in Florida as a Category 1 hurricane early Thursday
morning and later weakened
 to
a tropical storm. The National Hurricane Center said it weakened to a
tropical storm after its landfall just south of Vero Beach.
As of 7 a.m., Nicole was 30 miles southwest of Orlando and 55 miles east of
Tampa. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph and was moving
west-northwest at 14 mph. Nicole dumped about four inches of rain and
wasn't done.
Hurricane warnings for Brevard and coastal Volusia County have been dropped.
The worst of the weather is working through the region Thursday morning. Nicole
knocked the power out for thousands of residents in Brevard County.
"A turn toward the northwest and north-northwest is expected later today and
tonight, followed by an acceleration toward the north and north-northeast on
Friday."

Bed, Bath & Beyond Confirms a Data Breach From Targeted Phishing Attack
Bed, Bath & Beyond confirmed a data breach
from a targeted phishing attack against one of its employees.
 In
October 2022, the big box retailer noticed that a third party had improperly
accessed its data after a successful phishing scam by an unnamed threat
actor. The attacker accessed data on the employee’s hard drive and shared drives
that the employee could access.
Beth, Bath & Beyond reviewing possible information
leakage after a phishing attack
Bed Bath & Beyond said it was reviewing the data breach to determine if the
drives contained any sensitive information. “The Company is reviewing the
accessed data to determine whether these drives contain any sensitive and/or
personally identifiable information,” stated the company in its
8K filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
However, Bed, Bath & Beyond believes that no sensitive or personally
identifiable information was accessed during the phishing attack.
Additionally, the retail giant predicts that the cybersecurity incident would
have no material impact on the company.
Second data breach in three years
This incident marks the second time Bed, Bath & Beyond reported a data breach
after a credential stuffing attack in 2019 compromised less than 1% of its
customer accounts.
According to the company, hackers obtained usernames and passwords from
an external data breach and relied on users’ password reuse to compromise
Bed, Bath & Beyond accounts. On October 29, 2019, Bed, Bath & Beyond began
notifying customers and hired a cyber forensics firm to investigate the
incident.

Banning Surveillance Software in Europe?
Spyware Scandals Prompt Calls for Further Bans in Europe
Draft European Parliament report proposes
halt on use of surveillance software across 27-member bloc
A Europe-wide moratorium on surveillance software such as NSO Group’s Pegasus
and similar products is needed to clamp down on abuses, according to a
draft report from European Union lawmakers published Tuesday.
The report was authored by Sophie in ‘t Veld, a Dutch member of the European
Parliament, who chairs a special committee that has been investigating the
use of spyware in the 27 EU countries. “In a democracy, putting people under
surveillance should be an exception and there should be rules,” Ms. in ‘t Veld
said.
The report follows a proposal in September from the European Commission, the
EU’s executive body, which would ban the use of surveillance software to spy
on journalists. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Ms. in ‘t Veld called for
even broader curbs to how governments can use spyware.
A European country should be allowed to sell, acquire and use spyware only if it
fulfills several criteria, such as disclosing a list of crimes for which it
will deploy the spyware and if it has bought a license to use it, her report
said. “We need to strengthen supranational enforcement,” she said.

Arrest in Canada of LockBit operator behind destructive ransomware attacks
One of the world’s most prolific ransomware operators has been arrested on 26
October in Ontario, Canada, following a complex investigation led by the
French National Gendarmerie (Gendarmerie Nationale), with the support of
Europol, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Canadian Royal
Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
A 33-year old Russian national, the suspect is believed to have deployed the
LockBit ransomware to carry out attacks against critical infrastructure and
large industrial groups across the world. He is known for his
extortionate ransom demands ranging between €5 to €70 million.

in 3
Marijuana legalization on the ballot in these states: Here’s what voters decided
Ballot measures to legalize recreational marijuana use will fail in three
states and pass in two, CNN projects, as momentum has grown nationwide to
push for lifting penalties once associated with cannabis. Here’s what voters
decided in Arkansas, Maryland, Missouri, North Dakota and South Dakota on
Tuesday:
 Arkansas
- Arkansas voters on Tuesday will reject a constitutional amendment that
would have allowed cannabis possession and recreational consumption by adults
as well as the sale by licensed facilities, CNN projects.
Maryland - Maryland voters on Tuesday
will approve a constitutional amendment that legalizes recreational marijuana
for people 21 and older. It will go into effect on July 1, 2023, and allow
possession of 1.5 ounces or two plants.
Missouri - Missouri voters will approve a
proposed measure to end prohibitions on marijuana in the state and allow
personal use for those over the age of 21, CNN projects.
North Dakota - A citizen-initiated ballot
measure that aimed at allowing the use of marijuana in “various forms” for those
who are at least 21 years-old will be rejected by North Dakota voters,
CNN projects.
South Dakota - South Dakotans will vote
down a measure to legalize cannabis in the state, CNN projects.

Black Market Still Thriving Despite
Legalization
What have we learned about the arguments for and against legalized marijuana in
the past 10 years?
Cannabis legalization did not eliminate the marijuana black market in the state
and in some ways created a
new opportunity for the black market to flourish. This is in part
because, with marijuana remaining illegal in other states, Colorado became an
attractive place for black-market growers to set up shop, sometimes using
Colorado’s cannabis industry as cover for their operations.
 A
report last year
by the Colorado Department of Public Safety found that “the amount of
marijuana diverted out of Colorado is difficult to estimate” because only a
small percentage of it is caught and because there is no central database to
track it. Using a database maintained by the Drug Enforcement Administration’s
El
Paso Intelligence Center, the report found that seizures of marijuana
coming from Colorado jumped significantly in the years following 2014, when
Colorado’s first recreational cannabis shops opened.
There were 286 seizures in 2012. By 2015, there were 768 seizures. The numbers
have declined since then and, in 2019, the figure hit 266 seizures, below
the 2012 benchmark.
Annual reports published by the Rocky Mountain High-Intensity Drug Trafficking
Area, a law enforcement group, often highlight the continued presence of the
marijuana black market in Colorado. Last year’s report noted that 2019
saw the largest marijuana bust in the history of Colorado, involving 250
homes and businesses.
But even legalization opponents believe that Colorado won’t remain a national
black-market center forever. The same RMHIDTA report cites a 2021 study that
found cannabis users perceive legal cannabis to be higher-quality and safer
compared to black-market marijuana. But higher prices in the legal market
suggest that the black market could persist in some form.

40% of E-Commerce Traffic Comes from Bots
The cybersecurity impacts of bots on e-commerce in 2022
A range of cybersecurity threats — including account takeover (ATO), credit
card fraud, web scraping, API abuses, Grinch bots, and distributed denial of
service (DDoS) attacks — were a persistent challenge for the e-commerce
industry throughout 2022, threatening online sales and customer
satisfaction.
 The
State of Security Within eCommerce 2022 report, a 12-month analysis by Imperva
Threat Research, identified cyber threats facing online retailers. The
attacks on retailers’ websites, applications, and APIs throughout the calendar
year and during the peak holiday shopping season is a continued business risk
for the retail industry.
In the past 12 months, nearly 40% of traffic on retailers’ websites didn’t
come from a human, the report found. Instead, it came from a bot, software
applications controlled by operators that run automated tasks, often with
malicious intent. In the retail industry, the infamous Grinch bot is notorious
for inventory hoarding during the holiday shopping season, scooping up
high-demand items and making it challenging for consumers to purchase gifts
online.
Of all the traffic on retailers’ websites, nearly one-quarter (23.7%) was
attributed specifically to bad bots, malicious automation that contributes to
online fraud. The proportion of advanced bots — scripts that use the latest
evasion techniques to mimic human behavior and avoid detection — on retail
sites grew over the prior year (from 23.4% to 31.1%). Advanced bots are a
considerable challenge for organizations to stop without the right defenses in
place.
In 2021, bot-related attacks on retail sites grew 10% in October and grew
another 34% in November, suggesting that bot operators increase their nefarious
efforts around peak holiday shopping periods. In 2021, 64% of ATO attacks
used an advanced bad bot. Of all login attempts on retail websites, 23% were
malicious, nearly twice the volume of recorded on sites across other industries.
Attackers used leaked credentials 95% of the time in credential stuffing attacks
targeting retailers, compared to 70% of the time in other industries.

Amazon Launches Cost-Cutting Review Focused on Unprofitable Business Units
Review takes a close look at devices unit, which includes Alexa and has
had an annual operating loss of $5 billion in some recent years, documents show
Amazon.com Inc. Chief Executive Andy Jassy is leading a cost-cutting review
of the tech giant and paring back on businesses at the company that haven’t
been profitable, according to people familiar with the matter.
The Seattle-based company, whose stock is down about 45% year to date,
has been experiencing a slowdown in its core retail business as it tries to
manage costs from its logistics network. Other technology companies have been
making cuts to better navigate a potential recessionary environment. This week,
Facebook parent Meta Platforms Inc. said it would
cut more than 11,000 workers, or 13% of staff.

$740K Amazon Fraud Scheme
DOJ: Shelton Man Pleads Guilty to Defrauding Amazon
 OSHANE
STEWART, 30, of Shelton created multiple vendor accounts with Amazon allowing
him to sell merchandise through the website on a third-party basis. He often
opened the accounts using false names, email addresses and other identifying
information. After setting up the accounts, Stewart represented to Amazon
that he was shipping it valuable merchandise to be held for sale by the company.
In reality, he would not ship the merchandise, and would later falsely claim
that it had been lost, supporting his false claims with fabricated
documents. Amazon sent Stewart a series of refunds for the purportedly lost
merchandise. Stewart admitted that his criminal conduct resulted in a loss to
Amazon of approximately $742,231.16.
Stewart pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud, an offense that carries a
maximum term of imprisonment of 20 years. Judge Thompson scheduled
sentencing for January 23, 2023. Stewart is released on bond pending sentencing.
Stewart is the third individual to plead guilty in connection with this scheme.
On February 10, 2022, Stewart’s brother, Kenoy Stewart, pleaded guilty and
admitted that his conduct resulted in a loss to Amazon exceeding $1 million.

NYC: Two suspects hit with federal charges for $800K NYC jewelry store heist
 Two
thieves in a Bronx robbery crew were busted this week for an $800,000
smash-and-grab heist at a Bronx jewelry store in August, federal prosecutors
said. The suspects, Pablo Armando Valenzuela and Aaron Miller, were allegedly
part of a six-person crew that used bear spray, hammers and guns to knock off
the shop on East Fordham Road on Aug. 10. Valenzuela, wearing a ski mask,
allegedly burst into the shop and fired the powerful form of mace at the clerks.
His fellow robbers then ran in, smashed glass cases and swiped $800,000 in
merchandise, federal prosecutors said. At least one of the crooks pointed a gun
during the heist, the prosecutors added. The robbers fled the store on mopeds,
cars and on foot, authorities said. Miller was arrested yesterday and Valenzuela
was busted this morning, federal prosecutors in Manhattan said. Miller and
Valenzuela were each hit with one count of Hobbs Act robbery, conspiracy to
commit Hobbs Act robbery and brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a
crime of violence.

NPR reports that 21 people have been arrested under suspicion of their
involvement in a theft ring that made millions of dollars from stolen catalytic
converters. A team of law enforcement agencies seized hundreds of millions of
dollars in assets, such as homes, bank accounts, cash, cars and jewelry from
defendants.

The Jackson Police Department is investigating a robbery the Old Hickory Mall.
Multiple officers were seen at the Old Hickory Mall late Monday evening. JPD
later confirmed that there was a robbery at the JCPenney around 8 p.m. JPD
later says that there was a “report of subjects” going into the store and using
hammers to break display cases and they also stole “unknown quantity of
merchandise.”

Tulsa, OK: AT&T extends $5,000 reward for information about string of copper
thefts
AT&T says they are extending the $5,000 reward offered through the end of the
year in exchange for information concerning a copper cable theft in the Tulsa
area. AT&T says that theft and vandalism can affect communications
infrastructure and could potentially inhibit equipment to work properly in some
community areas. They say they are working with law enforcement to investigate
the alleged copper thefts that have been ongoing since January 2022. Thefts have
been reported in Tulsa, Muskogee, Pittsburg, Osage, Rogers, and Washington
counties.

Shelby County, TN: Man charged in fatal gas station shooting in Bartlett
 Bartlett
Police has arrested a man they say is responsible for a deadly shooting at a
local gas station on Tuesday. A man was taken to the hospital after he was shot
at the Shell gas station on Hwy 70. According to police, he later died from his
injuries at St. Francis in Bartlett. A search warrant was issued for the arrest
of Roman McGhee after he was developed as a suspect quickly after the shooting.
McGhee was located and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated robbery and
possession of a firearm.

Memphis, TN: Man shot, killed outside Hickory Ridge Mall
A man has been killed after a shooting took place outside the Hickory Ridge Mall
Tuesday afternoon. At 3:31 p.m., police responded to 6133 Winchester Road where
a man was found dead on the scene. The number of suspects is unknown, but police
say the shooter(s) took off in a light-colored vehicle. Police have blocked off
a portion of the road and have marked it as an active crime scene.

Valley Glen, CA: Suspect in Hookah lounge murder is arrested in Mexico
A man was arrested in Mexico and is in custody in Los Angeles Wednesday for
allegedly killing a man and injuring another in a shooting at a hookah lounge in
Valley Glen. The crime occurred around 12:15 a.m. Oct. 25 at 13007 Victory
Blvd., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The hookah lounge is in
the Victory Plaza shopping mall. Vardan Dzhandzhikyan, 54, was arrested Friday
in the Tijuana area by personnel from the LAPD-FBI Fugitive Task Force in
conjunction with the FBI Legal Attache, the LAPD reported. Dzhandzhikyan was
booked Saturday at the Valley Jail in Van Nuys on suspicion of murder and
attempted murder, and was being held on $2 million bail. His next court
appearance was tentatively set for Nov. 30 at the Van Nuys courthouse.

New Haven, CT: Man shot, killed during apparent robbery at package store
A 61-year-old man was shot and killed during an attempted robbery at a package
store in New Haven on Tuesday, according to the New Haven Police Department.
Police responded to a shooting victim in the GI Package Store parking lot on
Ferry Street after 9 p.m. Tuesday and located Mark Pappacoda of New Haven lying
on the ground unresponsive. Police obtained surveillance video of the incident
where the suspect is seen attempting to rob Pappacoda before shooting him,
police said.

Elkhart, IN: One victim in shooting at Concord Mall
One person was injured in a shooting at Concord Mall on Monday, according to the
Elkhart Police Department. At 2:31 p.m., police were called to the mall for
reports of a fight and shots fired. Law enforcement arrived and found a
potential scene at the Level Up Fashion store inside the mall. No victim or
suspect was found at the scene. Shortly after, a man arrived at a local hospital
with a gunshot wound. After further investigation, police confirmed the man is
connected to the shooting. His injury is not life-threatening.

Department, Oakdale Police Department and the community. Authorities were able
to connect Brooks and Sewell to a string of robberies in Waterford, Oakdale,
Escalon and Stockton. Police said one of the employees was shot multiple
times and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. On Oct. 18, they
said the victim was stable and making a recovery.

Fort Wayne, IN: Suspect in shooting outside Sport’s Bar arrested
Fort Wayne Police have arrested the man they have tied to the shooting outside a
crowded southwest-side bar in August .Jaleen Willis, 23, was arrested around
5:45 p.m. in a traffic stop at East Coliseum Boulevard and Parnell Avenue, Fort
Wayne Police said Wednesday. Willis was jailed on warrants for Criminal
Recklessness, Resisting Law Enforcement and a violation for Carrying a Handgun
without a License. Willis was named a suspect in the Aug. 27 shooting outside
Mitchell’s Sports Bar – inside the Westland Centre – that left two people
injured.

Walgreens, CVS, Family Dollar stores
Indianapolis Metropolitan police arrested two people suspected of carrying out
several robberies around the Indianapolis area in October and November.
According to IMPD, 38-year-old Howard Jones Jr. and 37-year-old Ashley Bell were
taken into custody on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2022, following a robbery at a Family
Dollar store. The investigation also involved the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force
Unit. “Those guys were not in the area by chance. It was work that they put in
to identify what was going on and the likelihood of it recurring and when and
where,” said IMPD Capt. Dulin Nelson. IMPD robbery detectives and task force
members were aware of an increasing number of robberies in the area of 5300
North Keystone Ave. on the north side. Nelson said their detectives monitor
robberies as they occur, looking for trends and similarities in cases, and come
up with a plan to identify anyone potentially involved.

Mentor, OH: Police to continue Retail Theft Deterrence Program this winter
In an effort to curb retail theft this holiday season, the Mentor Police
Department announced that it will be continuing its Retail Theft Deterrence
Program. As a part of the program, plainclothes officers will patrol
participating stores and surveil the parking lot in unmarked cars. The program
allows officers or any Loss Prevention Officer (LPO) who witnesses a theft to
quickly make an arrest. “We continue to support this program because of the
positive effect it has on deterring criminal activity in our retail locations,
and making the community a safer place to shop,” Mentor Police Chief Ken Gunsch
said in a release. First launched by a Mentor patrolman who recognized the
correlation between theft rings and drug abuse in 2014, the program's success
has led to it being used as a model in other departments across the country. The
patrolman who developed the program ascertained that "thieves will typically
steal high-value items that they can flip quickly to feed their habit."

human trafficking warrant

High Springs Police Department arrested two suspects Tuesday involved in a
fraudulent crime spree, while one of the suspects is under a warrant for human
trafficking. The two suspects, Darren Brown, 24, and Jenipher Milan, 25, were at
a Santa Fe pawn shop on October 24, 2022, dropping off a computer to be pawned.
The police were called when fraudulent financial material was reported from the
transaction at the shop. The two suspects returned to the shop Tuesday and tried
to flee from police already there, but they were both apprehended.

Toronto, Canada: Suspects sought after axe allegedly used in Toronto robbery
 The
Toronto Police Service (TPS) Hold Up Squad is seeking help in identifying two
suspects in connection to a recent robbery where an axe was allegedly used. On
Oct. 25, police were called down to a store in the area of St. Clair Avenue West
and Runnymede Road, TPS said in a Wednesday news release. TPS alleges a man and
woman went into the store, started to grab items and concealed them. They both
tried to walk away without paying for anything until the woman was confronted.
Police say she managed to run away and leave the store. When employees
confronted the second suspect as he was exiting the store, police say he swung
an axe and struck someone. The victim suffered minor injuries, and employees did
not approach the man any further.

Everyday you've got to work and you've got to ask yourself what value are you
adding to the company, to the industry and to your career. While this may seem
rather ominous at first, try reducing it to your daily tasks and just make sure
that with every effort you make there is value you deliver to someone, to some
store or to some project. If you can merely focus on the word "value" and ask
yourself am I delivering it everyday, you're then one step closer to advancing
your career. Because if you can build the field they will come and play.
