City of New Orleans Deploys Vehicle-Centric Investigation System to Help Secure
the French Quarter
 Genetec
Inc, a technology provider of unified security, public safety, operations,
and business intelligence solutions, announced that the City of New Orleans’
Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) has deployed Genetec AutoVu Cloudrunner to extend
the capabilities of its automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) program. The
vehicle-centric investigative system helps them gather evidence in the historic
French Quarter, with easy-to-deploy, solar-powered ALPR technology that captures
high-quality images day or night, making it easier and faster to solve crimes.
New Orleans is the most populous city in the state of Louisiana. The New Orleans
RTCC uses Genetec Omnicast, the video management system of Genetec™ Security
Center, to manage over 1000 cameras deployed throughout the city. They also have
150 Genetec AutoVu SharpV™ ALPR cameras, and now, 16 Genetec AutoVu Cloudrunner
cameras, with another 22 to be deployed.

What we know (and don’t) about the rise in retail theft
In some cases, those team-effort
crimes are part of an organized network of thieves who then sell the
stolen items. That’s referred to as organized retail crime.
It’s not just retailers reacting:
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced in August that the state would triple the California
Highway Patrol’s resources in the city of Los Angeles to address the issue.
The CHP operates an Organized Retail Crime Task Force, which has investigated
roughly 1,850 retail crimes statewide since its formation in 2019.
Also in August,
L.A. Mayor Karen Bass announced a new regional task force had been
created to “aggressively investigate these incidents and hold individuals that
are responsible for these crimes fully accountable.”
Retail theft has increased, but the data are murky
What the data do show is that
overall felony retail theft was up 16% in 2022 compared with 2019.
A closer look showed
commercial burglary specifically was up 13%. Commercial robbery,
which includes thefts in which force is used or threatened (like some
smash-and-grab thefts), was up about 13% in that same time frame.
And when it comes to
misdemeanor shoplifting, the data show a 29% spike in 2022 vs. 2019,
though the PPIC report notes that the rate for that crime remains 8% below its
pre-pandemic level.
The media’s role in shaping perceptions
How the media frames and covers crime
can have a strong impact on the perception of how safe we are. And with
the prevalence of video monitoring in public spaces —
both surveillance technology and our cameras that double as phones — it’s
never been easier to record and share video of people behaving badly.
Simply put, when the news media regularly
fills broadcasts or social feeds with visuals of criminal chaos, they’re
sending a signal to the public: this is what you should be concerned about.
Retailers citing crime for closing stores ‘tells a partial truth’
Looking at the data, it’s clear retail theft is having an impact on businesses.
But Kubrin said that framing only “tells a partial truth.” "Crime
is a piece of the puzzle,” she told me. “It’s not the entire puzzle.”

Oakland Mayor Thao doubles down on crime in first State of the City address
As pressure mounts on Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao to address the city’s biggest
problems, she doubled down on a promise to tackle crime and violence at her
first State of the City address on Tuesday.
In her speech — delivered before a packed crowd in City Council chambers — the
mayor said she is
committed to building a more “robust” Police Department that has a notable
presence on the city’s streets while beefing up specialized units to investigate
crimes. She promised to invest in violence interrupters and peer
specialists in schools and throughout the city. She also vowed to spend more on
technology to investigate crimes.
Other crimes have also increased: Robberies are up by 35%,
carjackings by 22%, burglaries by 36% and motor vehicle thefts by 51%,
according to city data.
Oakland Police Department is in the process of hiring more civilian
investigators;
it currently has 711 sworn officers and is budgeted for 712.
On Tuesday evening, the City Council is poised to pass funding to
expand a community ambassador program in certain parts of the city. The
council is also scheduled to discuss and vote on a proposal from Thao to
install 300 automated license plate readers throughout the city.
"We know that the sharp increase in
property crimes and auto burglaries are tied to organized groups with
sophisticated tactics and networks,” Thao said. “These
organized criminal enterprises are coordinating operations regionally and
a small group of people are causing most of the harm.”
Thao also said she has expanded police foot patrols citywide from six to 12. She
pointed to the city’s recent
deployment of California Highway Patrol officers to help with traffic
enforcement and said
those officers have already made 50 arrests, impounded 33 vehicles and recovered
70 stolen cars.
She also addressed
criticism for missing a grant deadline that could have infused the city with
millions to combat retail theft, saying, “the buck stops with me” and
that the city would learn from the experience. She said Oakland is fast-tracking
the hiring of a grants coordinator and modernizing the city’s grant management
software tools.

UK Police Not Responding to Retail Crimes
Robbed, spat at and assaulted, British shopkeepers despair over retail crime
Repeat offenders and criminal gangs operating with apparent impunity is
becoming a hot political topic ahead of a national election expected next year.
Critics of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's government say it shows a breakdown in
society.
"We stopped reporting
incidents to the police because we just felt, for whatever reason, budget
cuts or whatnot, they weren't as responsive as we needed them to be,"
Selvaratnam told Reuters in his shop in Croydon, where his butcher doubles up as
a security guard.
It's a similar story in Glasgow, Scotland, where Girish Jeeva was recently left
bloodied after being punched in the face when he challenged a man stealing from
his grocery store in the Barmulloch district. Both Selvaratnam and Jeeva are
frustrated that
shoplifters who steal goods worth less than 200 pounds are rarely prosecuted.
"That explains why some of these gangs, especially the teenagers,
they don't even run when they rob the place," said Selvaratnam.
A Freedom of Information request by British retailer the Co-op showed the police
did not respond to
71% of serious retail crimes reported. In the six months to June
2023, it recorded almost 1,000 incidents a day of shoplifting and anti-social
behaviour, a 35% increase year-on-year. It has warned that some local stores
risk becoming no-go areas.

Larry Snelling has a tightrope to walk. He took over as superintendent of the

decades.
On one hand, Snelling is tasked with leading a department that must meet a
series of reform goals that were born out of the 2014 fatal shooting of Laquan
McDonald.
On the other, many city residents have called for more

Rite Aid is set to close 154 stores as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.
While
the closures are scattered across the U.S., a significant concentration
is in California, New York, and Pennsylvania. This move is part of a broader
strategy as Rite Aid adapts to evolving business conditions and aims to enhance
store performance.
The drugstore chain identified the underperforming locations in a court filing
Monday. The closing stores are spread throughout the US but

Americans hope to spend more on holiday
shopping this year as retail sales continue to increase.
In its Holiday Shopping Survey release Thursday, credit reporting giant
TransUnion found that Americans on the whole are planning to make larger,
more expensive purchases on holiday gifts.
In a survey of over 1,500 adults conducted in August, TransUnion found 21% of
respondents were planning on spending over $1,000 on holiday shopping this year,
compared to 14% last year. Meanwhile, while 17% spent under $100 last year
on holiday gifts, only 4% plan to spend that little this year.

Web Browser Updates Turn Into Malware Attacks
Watch Out: Attackers Are Hiding Malware in 'Browser Updates'
Updating your browser when prompted is a good practice, just make sure the
notification comes from the vendor themselves.
Threat actors are using cybersecurity best practices against you,
hiding malware inside of fake browser updates.
They do so by
seeding legitimate but vulnerable websites with malicious JavaScript.
Upon loading, the code presents users with convincing browser update
notifications, masking dangerous payloads.

to a Oct. 17 report from Proofpoint, the trend began with one threat actor,
TA569, and it has since been adopted by at least four different threat clusters,
in what appears to be
a growing and intractable new trend.
Malicious Code, Hidden in Honest Websites
Though they may vary in the particulars, each of the four threat clusters
tracked by Proofpoint follow largely the same script. First, the actors take
advantage of a legitimate but vulnerable website, injecting their own malicious
JavaScript code. When an end user loads the website,
the attackers' script runs alongside the rest of the site's various assets.
Its job is to refer traffic to an attacker-controlled domain.
The Fake Browser Update Lure
The update lures are
designed to look like they're coming from the browser's developers,
with a clean look and relevant iconography. The following screenshots, courtesy
of the security researcher Jerome Segura, capture fake updates from TA569 and
another cluster, "FakeSG," also known as "RogueRaticate" (see below).
How to Avoid Fake Browser Updates
To suss out a real update from a fake one, Blackford urges users to
pay attention to how their trusted websites and browsers typically behave,
and whether anything happens that doesn't align with the usual pattern.

Small Businesses Face Growing Cyber Threats
SMBs seek help as cyber threats reach an all-time high
Understanding the evolving threat landscape is the biggest
cybersecurity challenge facing SMBs, including non-for-profit organizations
– and more than half are calling for help to manage the risks, according to
Sage.
Globally,
48% of SMBs have experienced a cybersecurity incident in the past year,
while
26% of US SMBs have experienced more than one
type of cyber breach.
75% of US SMBs say cyber threats are a major concern and 59% expect to increase

in cybersecurity in the coming year.
Top cyber breaches impacting US SMBs include
DDoS attacks (21%), data loss (20%), ransomware attacks (16%) and credential

SMBs face soaring cyber threats
SMBs in the US recognize this, and

educate and support them.

The foundational aspects of cybersecurity – like
system patching, backing up data, access controls, two-factor authentication,

– can still require specialist skills and tools to implement and operate.

46% of SMBs don’t employ firewalls, even though 84% claim familiarity with them.
On a global scale, 42% neglect to backup critical data. Intriguingly, UK SMBs
(62%) are more diligent in this regard compared to their US counterparts (55%).
73% have implemented systems to facilitate secure work from home, and for 63%,
these systems are distinct from their in-office security.
However, in the absence of dedicated IT or cyber security experts, there are
valid concerns regarding SMBs’ ability to tackle specific remote working cyber

Pallone Stresses Need for Comprehensive, Federal Privacy Legislation at Hearing
on Artificial Intelligence
Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ)
delivered the following opening remarks today at an Innovation, Data, and
Commerce Hearing titled, “Safeguarding
Data and Innovation: Building the Foundation for the Use of Artificial
Intelligence:”
Last year, now-Chair Rodgers and I were able to work across the aisle and pass
the American Data Privacy and Protection Act out of Committee by a vote of 50 to
2. That legislation included many important provisions, including provisions
focused on data minimization and algorithmic accountability. Clearly defined
rules are critical to protect consumers from existing harmful data collection
practices, and to safeguard them from the growing privacy threat that AI models
pose.
I strongly believe
that the bedrock of any AI regulation must be privacy legislation that includes
data minimization and algorithmic accountability principles.
Simply continuing to provide consumers with only “notice and consent” rights is
wholly insufficient in today’s modern digital age.
We cannot continue to allow companies to develop and deploy systems that misuse
and leak personal data and exacerbate discrimination. That is why we must make
sure developers are running every test they can to mitigate risks before their
AI models are deployed.
I will also continue to push for a comprehensive,
national federal privacy standard.
It is the only way we can limit the aggressive and abusive data collection
practices of Big Tech and data brokers, ensure our children’s sensitive
information is protected online, protect against algorithmic bias, and put
consumers back in control of their data.

During the construction and buildout phase of opening a cannabis operation, it
is important to prioritize physical and installed security measures.
Often, security system installation (i.e. cameras, alarms) and the focus on
security takes place after the buildout of the operation. Physical, or installed
security can include: doors, barriers, walls, or any other physically installed
feature, that plays a part in securing the operation. If these features are not
properly prioritized, the operation will likely face hindrances to security and
potentially operating altogether. Once these features are appropriately
prepared, it is then important to ensure that they work with the security
technology that will be installed later.

Compliance
Installed security features are almost certainly part of your compliance
standards for operating a cannabis business. Simply, if these features do
not function properly, you will be out of compliance when operating. You could
face fines and potentially suspension/revocation of your license, depending on
severity and number of compliance violations. For instance, a door that
separates a limited access area, and a restricted access area that is likely
used often, needs to be built with that in mind. Using higher grade hinges, an
advanced locking mechanism, as well as access control technology, will ensure
that you do not have to stop operating, or risk being out of compliance for the
sake of an installed security feature. Whatever the installed feature is, it is
paramount that it is built to last, with little to no maintenance, and is
functional under repeated use and stress.
Integration
Your installed security features are only part of the equation. Once you have
identified the most important security features that are necessary to your
compliance standards, as well as your operational security, you need to
ensure that the technology (cameras, alarms, access control, etc.) works
seamlessly with the installed security feature. After all, what good is a
sturdy door, without a lock or access panel that is also built to last? This is
a crux for you and your business, and if you have a weakness here, it means a
threat to you operating compliantly down the road.
By prioritizing the physical and installed security of your operation during the
application process, during buildout, as well as during the installation of
security technology, you will ensure that you are within compliance standards,
as well as being able to operate effectively long term. Failure to recognize the
importance of security features, their integration with technology, and
monitoring their ongoing functionality will likely cause you to either fall
out of compliance, or will jeopardize your ability to operate at your highest
capacity.

Marijuana Use By Employees Off Limits to
Employers?
California Employers Should Not Ask About Marijuana Use
California Gov. Gavin Newsom recently signed
a new law to prohibit employers from asking job applicants or employees about
their prior marijuana use.
California “employers need to make sure that they do not seek any information
about marijuana use from applicants, so there should be no questions about it on
employment applications or during an interview,” said Kathryn Russo, an attorney
with Jackson Lewis in Melville, N.Y. “There
should be no consideration of criminal convictions for marijuana use or
possession.”
In light of the new law, “employers
should re-evaluate whether pre-employment [drug] testing
is worthwhile,” said Alden Parker, an attorney with Fisher Phillips in
Sacramento, Calif.
The state law allows employers to conduct pre-employment drug screening with
methods that do not screen for nonpsychoactive cannabis metabolites in a
person’s hair, blood or urine.
The
new law will take effect Jan. 1, 2024.
It does not apply to employees in the construction industry or employees hired
for positions that require a federal government background investigation or
security clearance.
Impairment Not Permitted
Under a different California law that will take effect on April 1, 2024,
employers cannot fire, discipline or demote a worker for
using cannabis off the job and away from the workplace.
However, employers can require employees to not possess, use or be impaired by
marijuana at the worksite during work hours.

Amazon Introducing Warehouse Overhaul With Robotics to Speed Deliveries
Company to use new AI systems at its fulfillment facilities that will work
alongside employees
 Amazon
is introducing an
array of new artificial intelligence and robotics capabilities into its
warehouse operations
that will reduce delivery times and help identify inventory more quickly.
The revamp will change the way Amazon moves products through
its fulfillment centers with new AI-equipped sortation machines and robotic
arms. It is also set to
alter how many of the company’s vast army of workers do their jobs.
Amazon says its new robotics system, named Sequoia after the giant trees native
to California’s Sierra Nevada region, is designed for both speed and safety.
Humans are meant to work alongside new machines in a way that should reduce
injuries, the company says.
It is unclear how the new system will affect Amazon’s head count, and the
company declined to provide details about its expectations except to note that
it
doesn’t see automation and robotics as vehicles for eliminating jobs.
Sequoia enables the company to put up items for sale on its website faster and
be able to more easily predict delivery estimates, said David Guerin, the
company’s director of robotic storage technology. The new program
reduces the time it takes to fulfill an order by up to 25%,
the company said, and it can
identify and store inventory up to 75% faster.
Amazon launched the system this week at one of its warehouses in Houston.
“The faster we can process inventory, the greater the probability that we’re
going to be able to deliver when we said we could,” Guerin said. He said Amazon
expects
the new system to make up a significant portion of the company’s operations
in the next three to five years.

Will Amazon's Drone Program Finally Take Off?
Amazon will start testing drones that will drop prescriptions on your doorstep
Amazon will soon make prescription drugs fall from the sky when the e-commerce
giant becomes
the latest company to test drone deliveries for medications.
The company said Wednesday that customers in College Station, Texas, can now get
prescriptions delivered by a drone within an hour
of placing their order.
The drone, programed to fly from a delivery center with a secure pharmacy, will
travel to the customer’s address,
descend to a height of about four meters — or 13 feet
— and drop a padded package.
Amazon says customers will be able to choose from more than 500 medications, a
list that includes common treatments for conditions like the flu or pneumonia,
but not controlled substances.
The company’s
Prime Air division began testing drone deliveries of common household items last
December in College Station and Lockeford, California.
Amazon spokesperson Jessica Bardoulas said the company has made thousands of
deliveries since launching the service, and is expanding it to include
prescriptions based in part on customer requests.

Tampa, FL: Meat heist: $400,000 worth of stolen beef found at Florida veggie
farm; arrests made
Two of four men accused of stealing a truck containing more than $400,000 worth
of beef have been arrested, according to NBC affiliate WTVJ. Authorities said
the 53-foot-trailer and a container holding beef were reported stolen to the
Orange County Sheriff’s Office on Sept. 12. A GPS attached to the container
placed it at KB Farm, a vegetable farm in Miami-Dade. When Miami-Dade police
arrived at the farm, they found the suspects unloading the beef from the
container. The suspects ran away, leaving behind the tractor-trailer. “So I
guess in Miami-Dade they were transferring the stolen beef into another
container,” a Miami judge said in court. Police used security camera video to
track down and arrest 38-year-old Jorge Lyen Blanco Diaz. The report said Lazaro
Izquierdo, 39, was also arrested, but two other suspects, Leandro Respo, 38, and
Christian Garcia, 25, are still at large. Blanco Diaz and Izquierdo are facing
charges of grand theft of cargo greater than $50,000, resisting an officer
without violence, and a hold for magistrate, according to the report. Blanco
Diaz’s bond was set to $25,000, WTVJ reported.

St George, UT: 3 in jail after hundreds of cans of baby formula recovered during
traffic stop in Washington City
Three individuals suspected of running a criminal conspiracy were arrested after
a search of their vehicle revealed thousands of cans of baby formula reportedly
stolen from various stores. Officers were dispatched Saturday to a retail theft
reported at Walmart on Telegraph in Washington City. Upon arrival, officers
learned that on Friday, a suspect was captured on the store’s surveillance
camera taking several containers of baby formula and exiting the store without
paying for the items, which had a combined value of $142. Later that same day,
officers conducted a traffic stop on a white SUV and inside they found
“thousands of dollars worth of baby formula.” One of the suspects was
identified as Chase Odell, 33, of Rancho Cucamonga, California, and matched the
suspect involved in the theft at the Walmart in Washington City, police say.
Odell also was charged with conspiracy to commit retail theft, since he was in a
vehicle with two other individuals, one of whom was suspected of stealing baby
formula from a department store by concealing it in their clothing. During a
search of Odell, officers recovered five identification cards that appeared to
be fraudulent. When asked how many fake IDs he had, Odell reportedly said he had
two. Officers told him they found three additional cards that appeared to be
created “with the purpose to defraud.” Officers ran a criminal history check,
which indicated Odell had an outstanding warrant issued out of Centerville that
was still active.

Corte Madera, CA: Thieves ram Sunglass Hut store at Marin County mall
Thieves used a vehicle to ram a storefront at a Corte Madera mall early
Wednesday, authorities said. Central Marin police were called around 4:23 a.m.
to Sunglass Hut at the Village at Corte Madera, according to a statement from
the agency. Police said the suspects drove the vehicle from the parking lot into
the mall’s interior and used it to crash into the business to gain entry to the
shop. They escaped in a second vehicle with the stolen merchandise, police said.
Police investigated and obtained evidence and surveillance video footage. The
value of the items taken is not yet known.

Police Department arrested four suspects linked to multiple retail store thefts

recovery of a loaded firearm that had been reported stolen, around $1,800 in
cash, tools used for smash-and-grab, and stolen merchandise valued at
approximately $4,500.

Grand Rapids, MI: 3 accused of larceny ring centered on Planet Fitness
 A
trio of alleged crooks engaged in a scheme targeting Planet Fitness facilities
in West Michigan, according to a police task force that focuses on pattern
crimes in metro Grand Rapids. Ronta Emmanuelle Stone, 33, and Brian Keith
Coleman, 31, both of Kalamazoo, are locked up in the Kent County Correctional
Facility, charged with conspiracy to conduct a criminal enterprise in the
alleged plot. A third suspect, Jasmine Allene Conley, 31, is charged with
larceny in one of the Planet Fitness thefts. Investigators say Ronta Stone
obtained a membership to the chain of gyms under a fake name and used it to
steal from locker rooms. “During these incidents, Ronta Stone entered Planet
Fitness and stole (a victim’s) vehicle keys, gained access to his vehicle and
stole (his) wallet and credit cards,” wrote a detective in a probable cause
affidavit filed in Kentwood District Court. Court records show three Kent County
Planet Fitness locations were hit in Spring and Summer: 5270 Eastern Avenue SE,
721 68th Street SW, and 3681 28th Street SE.

Pembroke Pines, FL: GameStop employee fatally shot a fleeing shoplifter stealing

GameStop clerk who police say fatally shot a fleeing shoplifter has been charged
with manslaughter. Derrick Guerrero, 33, was working at the video game
retailer’s store in a suburban Fort Lauderdale strip mall Tuesday night when a
man grabbed five boxes of Pokemon Scarlet & Violet “ultra-premium” trading cards
and ran toward the door, Pembroke Pines police said in a report released
Wednesday. The cards retail for $120 a box.
Guerrero pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired one shot, hitting the man
in the side, police said. The shoplifter dropped the cards and ran outside to a
waiting pickup truck, where a woman called police. He died three hours later at
a hospital. Police said store security cameras show the shoplifter never
threatened Guerrero nor displayed any weapons. Florida, under its “stand your
ground” law, lets someone use deadly force if there is a threat of death or
great bodily harm to themselves or others, but it does not allow it simply to
protect property. Manslaughter is a killing that is unplanned and in the heat of
the moment.

Louisville KY: Security Officer Fatally Shoots Man Pointing a Gun at Him
A Kentucky security officer fatally shot a man in self-defense after the man
pointed a gun at him and his partner in a threatening manner. The owner of a
Frankfort Avenue business said a security guard was acting in self-defense, no
doubt about it. According to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office, 30-year-old
Christopher Mayes died at the scene of the shooting at 3 a.m. outside The Fox
Den Billiards, Bites and Brews at 3814 Frankfort Ave. In a written
statement, Jared Fox Matthews, who owns the business, said Mayes "had been
physically and verbally abusive to his (partner), began to threaten her, other
patrons, and our staff, and was threatening to retrieve a firearm from his car
with the stated intent of causing harm to everyone on property." The couple was
asked to leave, according to Matthews' statement, but Mayes "proceeded to
physically assault his (partner) in the parking lot of the property until she
came to the entrance of our building. She proceeded to hide behind the security
guard, at which time the individual in question approached the entrance of the
building and drew his firearm." That's when Matthews said the "security officer
was forced to respond immediately to this imminent threat, acting in
self-defense." He said the shooting "does not in any way reflect who we are."
Noting that there has never been a shooting at or near his business in the past,
Matthews called the shooting an "unfortunate, isolated incident" and said his
prayers go out to everyone involved. Louisville-Metro Police has not said if
anyone is expected to be arrested in the shooting, only that all parties are
accounted for and that an investigation is underway.

Monroe, NC: Teen arrested in deadly Monroe convenience store parking lot
Police announced they have arrested a 15-year-old accused of killing a man at a
Monroe convenience store parking lot. The teen is in custody as of Wednesday
morning and being transferred to a juvenile justice facility, according to
Monroe Police. Investigators said they are seeking a charge of first-degree
murder, among other charges. The teen’s charges stem from the weekend killing of
24-year-old Luiz Lopez-Garcia in a convenience store parking lot off Walkup
Avenue.

Dallas, TX: Update: 2 arrests made in deadly shooting of Dallas Security Guard
Police say they have arrested two men accused of shooting and killing a security
guard in Old East Dallas. 24-year-old Francisco Montez and 21-year-old Genaro
Rivera have been charged with capital murder in the shooting of David Ruback on
Sept. 1. Montez's arrest was announced Wednesday morning. Rivera's was announced
hours later on Wednesday afternoon. Surveillance footage released by Dallas
police last month shows a white sedan with two masked suspects inside pull up
outside Big Jim's Check Cashing Store on Carroll Avenue. Ruback, 52, was
standing at the back of a van getting ready to deliver cash to the store. The
video shows both suspects dressed in all black hop out of the car, the passenger
has a rifle. The shooting happens outside of the camera's view, but it does show
a gunman running off with a bag of cash. Ruback worked as a security guard at
Gardaworld for more than 20 years.

Daly City, CA: C-Store Owner charged with shooting teen robber
A Daly City store owner is facing attempted murder charges filed by prosecutors
who say he shot a robber in the neck while the robber was trying to make a
getaway from the store. Rocky David Eid, 51, of Daly City, appeared in a San
Mateo County courtroom on Wednesday for the first day of his preliminary
hearing. Eid is the owner of Sun Valley Dairy Market on Schwerin Street. The
incident happened on June 20 at 12:30 p.m. while Eid was working behind the
market’s front counter. “Two young men walked in with fanny packs and ski
masks,” the District Attorney’s Office wrote. One of the robbers told Eid, don’t
move or “I’ll smoke you.” A robber ripped a Rolex watch from Eid’s wrist before
the duo ran out of the store. The store owner then grabbed a semi-automatic
handgun from under the counter, walked out of the store, and fired eight shots
at the “two fleeing robbers,” the DA’s Office wrote. One of the robbers, a
19-year-old San Francisco man, was struck by bullets in the neck and shoulder
while he was 100 feet away from Eid, according to prosecutors. The two robbers
continued fleeing, jumped into a car driven by an accomplice, and drove off,
prosecutors said. The injured teenager showed up at San Francisco General
Hospital where he was treated for gunshot wounds. The DA’s Office wrote that Eid
later told police, “He did not see any weapons with the robbers but was worried
they might return, and wanted to scare them away.” The entire robbery and
shooting was recorded by surveillance video cameras. During their investigation,
police were unable to identify the uninjured robber, nor the getaway driver.
Eid is a convicted felon who cannot lawfully possess a firearm, according to the
DA’s Office.

Memphis, TN: Man fired up over Facebook post fires shots at North Memphis store
Memphis Police say a man who became fired up over a Facebook post opened fire at
a North Memphis store Tuesday night. Detectives were called to the Chelsea
Express convenience store at the corner of Chelsea Avenue and May Street, where
the attack is said to have happened in front of customers, clerks and cameras.
Investigators said a man upset over a Facebook post shot the man who made the
post. According to a police report, detectives were able to retrieve the video,
but the alleged gunman remains on the run. The victim is expected to be okay.
According to those who live in the area, the corner convenience store is once
more at the center of a criminal investigation. In July, there was another
shooting at the store.

FBI's Atlanta Field Office is asking for the public's assistance in locating
Demarco Johnson, who is wanted for his alleged role in two armored truck
robberies earlier this year. A federal arrest warrant was issued on August 23rd
for Johnson's alleged participation in an armored truck robbery in Tucker,
Georgia on February 6th and another in Snellville on March 20th. He is facing
charges of Conspiracy to Commit Hobbs Act Robbery, Hobbs Act Robbery, and
Possession of a Firearm During a Crime of Violence. Johnson is considered armed
and dangerous. Anyone who sees him or knows of his whereabouts is asked not to
approach him and to contact law enforcement immediately.

A Kansas City, Mo., man was sentenced in federal court today for his role in a
conspiracy to commit a series of armed robberies of local businesses in the
summer of 2018, as well as an armed robbery in which a convenience store
employee was beaten and fatally shot. Louis Candler, 27, was sentenced by U.S.
District Judge Roseann Ketchmark to 30 years in federal prison without parole.

Bakersfield police are in need of the community’s help identifying a woman who
was allegedly involved in a commercial burglary at Advanced Auto Parts on Oct.

Financial crime investigators tell News5 card skimmer devices are being
discovered on gas pumps and even installed on some ATM machines inside of
businesses in Colorado Springs. ”I try to check about once a week just to make
sure there’s nothing crazy out there. I’ve had my card swiped before,” said Nico
Fano. ”I think this year we found about seven or eight at gas stations around
town over the course of the year,” said Lt. Owne Scott of the Colorado Springs
Police Department. He says the gas stations where the card skimmers turn up is
constantly changing, but the way consumers are targeted is often the same.

Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic: Armed robbers target Tigers’ Dominican
complex in latest robbery of MLB facility in the country
The Detroit Tigers complex in the Dominican Republic was targeted Wednesday
in the latest robbery of a Major League Baseball facility in the country,
police said. One man was apprehended and police are searching for four others
who entered the complex with guns, restrained the security guard and went to the
players’ rooms to steal valuables and cash, Dominican Police spokesman Diego
Pesqueira told The Associated Press. The robbery happened days after the St.
Louis Cardinals complex in the country was hit. The facilities of the Miami
Marlins and Cleveland Guardians were also robbed recently, a person familiar
with the robberies told the AP. The person spoke on condition of anonymity
because they weren’t authorized to disclose the details publicly. Nobody was
hurt in the Tigers’ and Cardinals’ robberies, authorities said.
