'Self-Proclaimed Security Team' Keeping
Louisville Demonstrations in Check
The Armed Women at the Center of the Louisville Protests
"This is a war zone,
basically"
In
Louisville, as in many of the demonstrations across the country,
there is no single person or group in charge. The protests are
decentralized and sprawling, and the mood on any night can shift depending on
who shows up and who holds the megaphone. But
small groups have sprung up
and developed loose organizational structures to bring a semblance of order to
the nightly marches.
It's vital, they believe, to sustaining momentum, and why they've been able to
keep the demonstrations going since May.
Along with security teams, volunteer medics wear helmets and treat everything
from rubber bullet wounds to asthma attacks. Demonstrators have their own
news correspondents traveling the city on foot and bicycle. The reporters call
themselves "502 Livestreamers," named after the city's area code, and broadcast
live on Facebook. "We've had our own independent media from day one," Mitchell
said, because other media "always depict us as the villains."
The presence of the armed
security teams are a reminder of how far the nationwide protests, now
entering their fifth month, have come from the mostly spontaneous demonstrations
that erupted in the days after George Floyd's killing in Minneapolis. Now, a
state of tense permanence has taken hold in cities across the country where
almost nightly marches proceed with clockwork regularity through shuttered
downtowns. But the routine is spiked with an air of unpredictability.
With weapons in the hands of people on all sides-the protesters, the
police and the right-wing militias who periodically appear-any
night is a cat-and-mouse test of constitutional limits in which the guardrails
against deadly violence are fragile at best.
"This is a war zone, basically,"
Mitchell said. "The very moment I decided to come here the first day to protest,
I knew that I was prepared to die for this. I am prepared to sacrifice my life
for the betterment of my people."

Downtown Portland jewelry store intends to sue city for handling of protests
A downtown Portland jewelry store owner intends to sue the City of Portland for
its handling of protests in late May.
Noha Kassab, CEO of Kassab Jewelers, said her family-owned store was was
broken into and looted
early in the morning on May 30. This was during the beginning stages of
what would lead to more than 100 days of protest in Portland.
The store owner said they are still calculating the costs, but estimates $2.5
million in damages.
"I'm not someone who came to this country with money. I came with an American
dream. To see my American dream destroyed and it could have been preventable, is
disheartening," said Kassab.

Fauci Fears 'Problematic Winter'
With the US making no progress on average daily Covid-19 cases last month,
officials fear a coming crisis
The US made
no progress in lowering its baseline of Covid-19 cases in the past month
despite experts' urgent admonitions to reduce the daily count of new cases
before the challenging fall and winter seasons.
Hours before President Trump announced Friday that he and his wife tested
positive for the virus, the
average of daily new cases nationwide stood around 42,785. That's about 500 more
than on September 1,
data from Johns Hopkins University shows, and more than double what the US saw
in June, when lockdown restrictions began to ease.
"No matter how you
slice it, that's not good,"
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious
Diseases and a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, said last week.
"We're looking at
40,000 new cases per day.
That's unacceptable and that is what we've got to get down before we go into the
more problematic winter."

'Uncharted Territory'
The President Contracting COVID-19 Is A Major National Security Crisis
While Presidents have been incapacitated in the past, the highly infectious and
wily nature of this disease means that incapacitation is further complicated by
isolation and
the possibility that the same deadly virus spreads throughout the highest rungs
of power in Washington.
At the very heart of the matter is
continuity of government,
and in particular, the command and control of America's nuclear deterrent. The
President is followed 24/7 by a U.S. military official carrying the nuclear
'football,' a Haliburton briefcase containing a remote command interface used to
order the release of nuclear weapons and connect the President to the National

Dress For Success in the COVID Era
The Science Behind WFH Dressing for Zoom
How your clothing choices at home can affect productivity and
performance
Researchers studying links between clothes, brain activity and productivity have
long found that dressing up for work can improve your performance. Some are now
turning their attention to how these factors play out in dressing for remote
work and Zoom meetings - including the unexpected rise of the nice tops/schlubby
bottoms combo.
The rise of video calls has added complexity to an area of research known as
"enclothed cognition," or what signals clothes send to the brain, says Dr. Adam Galinsky, co-author of the pre-pandemic research that coined the term.
"In some
ways, the clothes that you wear might have an even bigger impact because we can
often see ourselves and what we're wearing and that sort of draws that symbolic
value [attached] to it even closer to our consciousness," he says.

Using AI to Put Out Fires
California Firefighters Tap AI for an Edge in Battling Wildfires
Agencies
battling wildfires in California are turning to artificial intelligence and
other technologies to predict the spread of blazes and help guide the
response of firefighting crews.
The AI-based tools are helping officials monitor fires, evacuate
threatened areas and send often-stretched resources to places they will do most
good.
Fire prediction tools are helping officials in the area and across the state
gain greater visibility into how big a fire might get and where it might be
headed, said Geoff Marshall, a division chief in Cal Fire's Predictive Services
program. Predictive Services does modeling for seasonal trends and
outlooks for firefighters and fire managers.
Cal Fire has started rolling out a tool called Wildfire Analyst Enterprise
from Technosylva Inc., a 50-person company in La Jolla, Calif.
Besides Wildfire Analyst Enterprise, the company offers other products, such as
FiResponse, a fire incident management, dispatching and resource-tracking
system. Other state firefighting agencies are also using its products,
Technosylva says.

U.S. corporate board diversity lags as few minority execs get top jobs: study
Publicly traded U.S. companies have been slow to add minority directors over the
past five years even as women grabbed a greater share of board seats during that
period, a comprehensive study shows.
Across the Russell 3000, a broad index of U.S. companies,
29% now have two or more ethnically diverse directors,
7 percentage points more than in 2016, according to the new data from ISS ESG,
an arm of Institutional Shareholder Services. By contrast
66% of those boards now have 2 or more women,
27 percentage points more than in 2016, ISS found.
Brett Miller, head of data solutions for ISS ESG, said companies have helped
limit the pool of obvious director candidates by their slow overall promotion of
minorities. He found
84.2% of Russell 3000 companies have no ethnically or racially diverse top
executives among their top five executives,
down only 1.4 percentage points from 2016.

Fines for Paying Ransom?
Treasury Warns Against Keeping Ransomware Payments Quiet
Victims of ransomware schemes and financial institutions could violate
sanctions or anti-money-laundering rules-and face stiff penalties-if they
facilitate or make payments to attackers, the U.S. Treasury Department said
in a pair of advisories Thursday.
The notices, issued by units of Treasury's Office of Terrorism and Financial
Intelligence, warned victims and businesses that assist them to be
particularly wary of making ransomware payments to blacklisted individuals and
entities, including hacker groups in countries such as Iran, North Korea and
Russia.
The advisories come on the heels of
high-profile ransomware attacks that have disrupted schools, hospitals and
global shipping in recent days.

A Guide to the NIST Cybersecurity Framework
With cybersecurity threats growing exponentially, it has never been more
important to put together an efficient cyber-risk management policy, and NIST's
framework can help.
One of the main ways in which businesses measure their preparedness in managing
cyber-related security risks is to benchmark themselves against the
Cybersecurity Framework developed by the NIST (National Institute of Standards
and Technology, U.S. Department of Commerce).
The Cybersecurity Framework
Created and ratified by the US Congress in 2014, the Cybersecurity Framework is
used by over 30% of US organizations and was projected to reach 50% this year.
The aim of the framework is to:
● integrate industry
standards and best practices to help organizations and businesses manage their
cybersecurity risks;
● provide a common
language that allows staff to develop a shared understanding of their
cybersecurity risks;
● give guidance on how
to reduce these risks;
● give advice on how to
respond and recover from cybersecurity attacks and learn from those incidents.

Since Remote Work Isn't Going Away, Security Should Be the Focus
These three steps will help organizations reduce long-term work-from-home
security risks.
Some studies have shown that remote
employees are less likely to follow security best practices
- for example, a
report by Malwarebytes
showcasing security in today's work from home environment found 18% of
respondents said cybersecurity was not a priority. And in a
report
commissioned by (ISC)², nearly one fourth (23%) of infosec professionals said
that cybersecurity incidents experienced by their organization have increased
since transitioning to remote work.
To address this concern,
security needs to be a priority. Here are the security strategies to keep in
mind when transitioning from pandemic to permanent remote infrastructure and how
to ensure your team is set up for success.
Adopt a Zero-Trust Approach
Zero trust is a well known security concept centered on the belief that
organizations should plan their defenses by
not trusting anything or anyone, both inside and outside of the network
perimeter.
Expand Beyond VPN Security
The abrupt shift to remote work led to a massive spike in employees using
virtual private networks (VPN) to remotely connect to company networks. However,
traditional VPN is not granular enough to meet the needs of today's workplace.
If a device falls into the wrong hands, all bets are off.
Organizations should adopt a
Zero-Trust Network Access (ZTNA) model,
which takes into account context, such as the user's role, device and location
when assigning access privileges, to enforce stronger security protocols. Many
companies are already seeing the value of ZTNA compared to VPN.
Gartner predicts that by 2023,
60% of enterprises will phase out traditional VPNs and use a ZTNA model.
Invest in 'Security Operations'
Just like an annual physical at the doctor's office can help address severe
issues before they become worse, regular monitoring of the security health of an
organization's resources (from apps to networks and data) will help identify
issues and strengthen the overall security posture long-term.

Amazon said nearly 20,000 of its workers got coronavirus
Amazon
said Thursday that
19,816 of its front-line US
employees at Amazon and Whole Foods
have tested positive or been presumed positive for the coronavirus, shedding
light for the first time on how its workforce has been impacted by Covid-19.
Amazon had repeatedly resisted sharing comprehensive data with the public and
with its own workers about the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases at
its warehouses, which have become crucial hubs for household supplies during the
pandemic. Despite numerous confirmed cases at Amazon warehouses across the
country, and around the world,
the e-commerce giant has
downplayed the significance of releasing site or aggregate data,
making it difficult to get a clear picture of overall infections at its sites.
In a blog post, the company said it did a "thorough analysis of data on all
1,372,000 Amazon and Whole
Foods Market front-line employees
across the US employed at any time from March 1 to September 19, 2020."
Amazon said it then compared its case rates to the general population during the
same period, using reporting from Johns Hopkins University. It claimed that the
number of its employees that tested, or were presumed to be, positive was
42% lower than expected based
by that comparison.

Why Walmart thinks TikTok is the future of its business
For
the past five years, nearly every one of Walmart’s big moves has seemingly had
one goal: to narrow Amazon’s embarrassingly huge lead in e-commerce.
Whether the partnership with TokTok turns out to be a brilliant chess move for
Walmart or a disastrous distraction, it still shows the traditional retailer is
trying to invent a digital
future where it will be a leader of Amazon rather than a follower.
If successful, Walmart could become a leader in online video commerce — an area
of retail that has been a hit in Asia, but is still nascent in the US.

Dallas: Woman, 63, Gets 54 Months for 19-year $3.8M eBay Stolen Merchandise
Scheme
63-year-old
resident of Dallas, Kim Richardson, has been ordered to federal prison for her
role in a multi-million dollar interstate theft ring involving merchandise sold
on eBay.
Judge ordered her to serve a total of 54 months in federal prison to be
immediately followed by three years of supervised release. She has also agreed
to pay $3.8 million in restitution.
Richardson admitted she participated in a conspiracy that
spanned from August 2000
through April 2019.
During that time, she
shoplifted items as she traveled throughout the United States.
She would then sell the stolen merchandise to buyers on eBay and via direct
internet sales and sent it to them via the U.S. mail, Federal Express and United
Parcel Service.
Richardson stole items from
numerous retail stores.
She used shoplifting
tools to disable security devices
and would exit the store by
placing the stolen merchandise
in a large black bag
she carried.
Buyers sent approximately $3.8 million throughout the scheme into four PayPal
accounts linked to Richardson.

Hartford, CT: FBI searching for 4 members of Connecticut theft ring behind
$65,000 burglaries at upscale clothing retailers
Eight Hartford-area residents have been indicted on charges that they ran a
brazen “grab-and-go” theft ring that snatched tens of thousands of dollars worth
of merchandise from stores across the Northeast late last year. The group has
been charged with stealing almost $65,000 worth of clothes and accessories
during at least 11 robberies of retail stores from Balenciaga to T.J. Maxx,
court records show. Four of the accused have been arrested but four remain at
large and wanted by the FBI, including 26-year-old Hartford resident Andres
“Coolie” Barclett, who should be considered armed and dangerous, the FBI said
Thursday.
A grand jury returned a
six-count indictment against the accused crew in September following a
months-long investigation named “Operation American Steal” that began last fall
after authorities linked a series of robberies across Connecticut, New York,
Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire.
The scheme was simple and effective: One or more members of the crew would enter
a store as if they were normal customers but would instead grab as much
merchandise as they could carry and sprint outside to a waiting getaway car,
prosecutors said. The group hit multiple
Ralph Lauren, Balenciaga,
Burberry, Tommy Hilfiger, Macy’s, Marshalls, T.J. Maxx and Dick’s Sporting Goods
locations across all five states,
sometimes stealing from the same store more than once. They would then drive the
merchandise back to Connecticut to store in their cars, homes or storage units
to either keep for themselves or sell online.

with others from around the city. Through the efforts, the department arrested
21-year-old Chaquala Mathis, 21-year-old Semaj Muldrow, 21-year-old Khaezia

Goods at Towne West Square. Through further investigation, officers recovered
other previously stolen merchandise totaling approximately $13,000.
Additionally, two stolen handguns were recovered. Officers also arrested

As many of us speed through our days and work hard to accomplish our objectives,
oftentimes the one thing that suffers is our active listening skills. These
skills are important if we expect to truly change behavior or direction as
quickly as today's pace requires. Active listening is difficult for some and
requires an individual to hear things they may not be open to hearing or just
hearing things that aren't said because oftentimes it isn't what's said that's
important, it's what isn't said that can mean the most. Hearing that usually
takes place upon reflection because most of us aren't intellectually fast enough
to respond instantaneously. Active listening is a tool and a skill that can help
an executive every day. It merely requires the thought and the practice.
Just a Thought, Gus
