ADT Invests in Percepta Labs, “Ethical AI” Security Technology Startup

One of the leading providers of commercial security commits to invest more than $1M in technology focused on anonymizing race, gender, and age in facial recognition data

ADT Inc. (NYSE: ADT) announced today that, via its commercial channel (“ADT Commercial”), it is investing in Percepta Labs, an artificial-intelligence technology startup out of Philadelphia. ADT Commercial is a premier provider of commercial security, fire, life safety, and risk consulting services in the U.S., and through its investment will fund the commercialization and application of the startup’s cutting-edge AI technology to help detect and deter shoplifting. ADT Commercial will work directly with Percepta to further test and develop the application of Percepta’s proprietary, socially responsible AI technology in commercial environments and facilitate the launch when the solution is market-ready.

Founded by Philippe Sawaya, Neil Gramopadhye, and Jonathan Mak while pursuing their undergraduate degrees at the University of Pennsylvania, Percepta’s proprietary "ethical AI" technology responds to emerging concerns surrounding the use of facial recognition technologies and is designed to anonymize individuals’ demographic features—including race, gender, and age—by analyzing existing security camera feeds to detect shoplifting incidents in real-time. Using advanced action recognition techniques, Percepta’s AI technology tracks individuals’ movements, scanning for probable shoplifting or precursory shoplifting behavior and assesses theft probability.

Louisville, KY: Police declare 'state of emergency,' barricades block traffic ahead of anticipated Breonna Taylor announcement
The Louisville Metro Police Department announced Tuesday it will begin setting up barricades in the downtown area and restricting some vehicle traffic in anticipation of an announcement from Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron regarding the investigation into Breonna Taylor's death.

This comes after the department declared a state of emergency Monday and a federal courthouse and adjacent offices in Louisville were boarded up Sunday ahead of the decision. Cameron has repeatedly refused to give a timeline for his investigation, but he will eventually present his findings before a grand jury, who will decide whether to criminally indict the three officers involved in Taylor’s death.

“Due to increased attention and activity in anticipation of an announcement from Attorney General Daniel Cameron regarding the Breonna Taylor case, a decision was made to accelerate plans to physically restrict access to the downtown area,” the LMPD said in a statement tweeted early Tuesday. foxnews.com

Some Protests Against Police Brutality Take a More Confrontational Approach
The protests are moving into white residential neighborhoods, where activists demand that people choose a side.

The marches in Portland are increasingly moving to residential and largely white neighborhoods, where demonstrators with bullhorns shout for people to come “out of your house and into the street” and demonstrate their support.

These more aggressive protests target ordinary people going about their lives, especially those who decline to demonstrate allegiance to the cause. That includes a diner in Washington who refused to raise her fist to show support for Black Lives Matter, or, in several cities, confused drivers who happened upon the protests.

But the tactics are dividing supporters of Black Lives Matter, with some worried that the confrontational approach will antagonize people who would be otherwise be receptive to the message, or play into conservatives’ critique of the protests, which have been largely nonviolent nationally.

Others, frustrated that little has changed since Mr. Floyd was killed, say that sitting idly and watching a protest without participating nowadays is to show tacit support for racism. nytimes.com

Poll: A majority of Americans say cities under siege by protesters
As protests against systemic racism continue across the U.S. and law and order becomes a major theme in the 2020 presidential race, a new poll shows most Americans say cities are under siege.

Roughly two-thirds (64%) of those surveyed say they believe protesters and counter-protesters are overwhelming American cities, according to a USA TODAY/Ipsos poll. That majority shows stark partisan divisions that echo the messages coming from Republican President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden: Significantly more Republicans than Democrats say cities are under siege, 83% to 48%, respectively.

Those who live in rural areas (71%) are more likely to agree with that sentiment than those in urban areas (59%). usatoday.com

‘We Have Not Defunded Anything’
More Than Half of Big Cities Have Boosted Police Budgets

It seemed like a turning point. In May, a Minneapolis police officer killed George Floyd, sparking protests against racism across the country and an unrelenting demand from protesters in city after city: Defund the police.

But after months of demonstrations, that rallying cry hasn’t translated into reality. While a few major cities like New York and Los Angeles have made large, high profile cuts, more than half actually increased spending or kept it unchanged as a percentage of their discretionary spending, based on a Bloomberg CityLab analysis of 34 of the largest 50 U.S. cities that have finalized 2021 budgets. As a group, the difference between police spending as a share of the general funds fell less than 1% from last year. bloomberg.com

NYC retailers take big COVID-19 hit
With some employers offering work from home on a permanent basis, and others offering more space and privacy to the workers who do come in, office rents are projected to fall.
In Manhattan, that re-pricing could be dramatic.

Six months into the pandemic, less than 10 percent of the city’s white-collar workforce is back in the office, with less than a quarter expected back by the end of the year and only half before next summer, according to a survey by the Partnership for New York City.
Broadway theaters are closed indefinitely, tourists are nowhere to be found, and the Hilton hotel in Times Square has permanently closed.

CDC removes guidelines saying COVID-19 can travel beyond six feet
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has pulled its updated guidance that the coronavirus
is airborne and can travel distances beyond 6 feet.

“It is possible that COVID-19 may spread through the droplets and airborne particles that are formed when a person who has COVID-19 coughs, sneezes, sings, talks, or breathes,” the CDC said in an update posted Friday. The CDC had said for months that the disease is mainly transmitted between people in close proximity through large droplets.

But after adding last week that tiny particles known as aerosols could transmit the virus, the agency restored its earlier guidelines about how the deadly pathogen is spread, according to the Wall Street Journal. nypost.com

Kroger steps up AI deployment to combat checkout losses
Kroger has signed a deal with Irish artificial intelligence firm Everseen to use the company’s technology to help stop items from passing through self-checkout stations in the grocer’s stores without being scanned, according to an emailed press release.

Everseen’s system uses computer vision cameras to detect if a shopper fails to scan an item and discreetly alerts a store employee, who can intervene before the customer leaves without paying for the merchandise.
Kroger began installing the Everseen equipment in stores in March and plans to deploy it at as many as 2,500 supermarkets as part of an effort to combat shrink.

“We are laser-focused on continuous improvements to customers’ experience across our stores,” said Mike Lamb, Kroger’s VP of asset protection. “By leveraging Everseen’s Visual AI and machine-learning technology, we’re not only able to remove friction for the customer, but we can also remove controllable costs from the business and redirect those resources to improving the customer experience even more.”

Kroger’s arrangement with Everseen is part of a broad effort by store operators to stem the billions of dollars in losses they incur when shoppers and store employees neglect to scan items at check-out counters, either intentionally or by mistake. grocerydive.com

Conduct Careful Background Checks for Racism

Checking for evidence of racism has become a key litmus test for corporate recruiting and hiring.

Companies can no longer afford the fallout of installing candidates with problematic pasts in top positions.

For private-sector employers, hiring workers with any hint of racism in their past—or in their social media posts—
comes with risk, regardless of their position. That risk is magnified when a new hire will have management responsibilities. An allegation of discrimination or harassment in the workplace could quickly bring to light a comment or an act that the hiring company should have vetted. It will be Exhibit 1 for a jury in a negligent-hiring lawsuit. Negligent hiring is a common-law claim asserting that the employer knew or should have known that an employee posed a risk. It's the reason why HR professionals should screen candidates carefully before making job offers and conduct background checks for key positions.

Despite past denials, LAPD used facial recognition 30,000 times in last decade
The Los Angeles Police Department has used facial recognition software nearly 30,000 times since 2009, with hundreds of officers running images of suspects from surveillance cameras and other sources against a massive database of mug shots taken by law enforcement.

Josh Rubenstein, an LAPD spokesman, said he could not determine how many leads from the system have developed into arrests, but that the technology has helped identify suspects in gang crimes where witnesses were too fearful to come forward and in crimes where no witnesses existed.

The system identifies “key contour facial features,” but is
“only used to develop investigative leads, not to solely identify a suspect in a crime,” Rubenstein said. “No individuals are arrested by the LAPD based solely on facial recognition results.”

The technology used in Los Angeles is from DataWorks Plus, a South Carolina company that expanded into facial recognition from mugshot services.

According to Rubenstein, the county system allows police investigators to submit images from witnesses, crime scenes, surveillance cameras or other sources and compare them against a database of nearly 9 million mug shots. latimes.com

Brooklyn Meat Distributor Pleads Guilty to Selling Miss-Labeled Meat
For 4 Years to Retailers
Between September 2011 and October 2014, the defendants were co-owners of A. Stein Meat Products, Inc., a wholesale meat processing and distribution business located in Brooklyn. During this period, the defendants purchased beef products that had been graded “Choice” quality by graders at the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service and
directed their employees to carve off the “Choice” markings and re-stamp them as “Prime,” using counterfeit stamps. The meat was then sold at inflated prices to customers in the New York City metropolitan area.

When sentenced, each defendant faces up to 20 years in prison and criminal forfeiture of $250,000.

Interface Security Systems Helps Retailers and Restaurants Enforce Social Distancing and Mask Policies Through Interactive Remote Video Monitoring

Voice down services help reduce pressure on associates to enforce new health and safety mandates during the health crisis

Earth City, MO (September 22, 2020) — Interface Security Systems, a leading managed service provider delivering business security, managed network, and business intelligence solutions to distributed enterprises, today announced it is now offering interactive remote video monitoring service with automated voice-down options to help its retail and restaurant customers promote social distancing and mask-wearing guidelines on their premises.

A growing number of retailers and restaurants are reporting increased incidents of agitated customers and in-store violence during this health crisis. The physical distancing measures introduced in stores and restaurants, limits on the number of customers allowed inside, the mandatory wearing of masks, and restrictions on some products to reduce panic buying, have contributed to an increase in retail worker abuse.

With automated voice down messages, businesses can make public announcements to remind customers and employees about proper social distancing and mask-wearing guidelines. The messages are scheduled throughout the day and play through an organization’s existing audio system. Each message can be customized to directly address the principal challenge of the moment. When store or restaurant associates witness patrons not following health and safety guidelines, they also have the option to simply press a button and have a trained security professional intervene via live video and two-way audio from one of Interface Security Systems’ Five Diamond rated Command & Control Centers.

“Many of our customers have asked us to help them audit and assist with social distancing and health policy enforcement in their stores to remove some of the pressure on their associates. Our interactive remote monitoring technology enables us to safely enforce these policies and proactively avoid disputes,” said Brent Duncan, Chief Revenue Officer at Interface Security Systems.

The Voice Down aspect of an interactive remote video monitoring solution is also a strong deterrent to both internal and external crime as employees and customers are clearly made aware of a security presence either during scheduled or random announcements.

Visit the Interface Interactive Remote Video Monitoring page and watch the video to learn more about the service.

NS8 CEO Inflates Sales $60M to Raise $123M
CyberFraud Prevention Firm’s Ex-CEO Charged With Fraud
Adam Rogas, a co-founder of NS8, was "the proverbial fox guarding the henhouse," a prosecutor says in announcing his arrest.

The former CEO of fraud prevention startup NS8 has been charged with fraud for fabricating millions of dollars in revenue to raise $123 million from investors.

The U.S. Department of Justice said Adam Rogas, 43, altered NS8’s bank statements before providing them on a monthly basis to its finance department to show revenue and bank balances that did not exist, resulting in an over $60 million inflation of assets as recently as June 2020.

When NS8 raised approximately $123 million in two offerings, Rogas allegedly provided the false statements to existing and prospective investors, pocketing nearly $17.5 million of the proceeds for himself.

Rogas, who was arrested Thursday on federal charges of securities fraud, is also facing a civil complaint filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission. cfo.com

Huge Dark Web Operation & 179 Arrests Worldwide
International sting against dark web vendors leads to 179 arrests
Today, a coalition of law enforcement agencies across the world announced the results of a coordinated operation known as DisrupTor which targeted vendors and buyers of illicit goods on the dark web.

This operation follows the takedown in May of last year of Wall Street Market, the world’s then second largest illegal online market in the dark web. Led by the German Federal Criminal Police (Bundeskriminalamt) with the support of the Dutch National Police (Politie) Europol, Eurojust and various US government agencies, this takedown provided investigators with quantitative data and materials to identify suspects behind dark web accounts used for illegal activity.

Law Enforcement's Message:
THE DARK WEB IS NO FAIRY TALE

The golden age of dark web marketplace is over. Operations such as these highlight the capability of law enforcement to counter encryption and anonymity of dark web market places. Police no longer only takes down such illegal marketplaces – they also chase down the criminals buying and selling illegal goods through such sites. europol.europa.eu

Postal Service's 2nd Largest Retail Customer

EBay activates plan to shift more business to UPS and away from Postal Service because of mail delays
The online auction and sales site eBay,
one of the U.S. Postal Service’s biggest customers, said it is shifting some of its business to private-sector rival United Parcel Service because of reliability issues with the agency.

Customers want and expect to receive their packages in the fastest and most reliable way possible, which is why our collaboration with UPS comes at such a critical moment,” eBay vice president Marni Levine, who had previously expressed concerns about the Postal Service’s decreasing on-time delivery rate, wrote in a message to eBay sellers announcing the deal with UPS.

The company said that by
the end of September, eBay sellers will be able to print out discounted UPS shipping labels, at a cost up to 62 percent cheaper than typical UPS rates.

For the Postal Service, the loss of eBay revenue could be substantial: A spreadsheet of the Postal Service’s largest customers prepared last spring showed
the e-commerce site was agency’s second-largest retail customer, shipping more than 130 million items up to that point in the fiscal year. The USPS generated more than $743 million in revenue from eBay packages in that fiscal year while grappling with a $160.9 billion deficit. washingtonpost.com

Contactless delivery robots may soon hit a sidewalk near you
There are challenges that need to be worked out yet.
1. Customer confusion about how to use Starship’s mobile app to coordinate delivery and then open the robot’s cargo compartment.

2. The occasional case of a robot getting stuck before a kind human frees it.

3. Sidewalks and streets themselves can complicate a delivery robot’s life. It’s not obvious whether delivery robots should take the sidewalk, the bike lane, or the traffic lane.

4. Existing laws don’t always fit delivery robots either. fastcompany.com

Columbus, OH: Police seek motive for deadly Westland Mall shooting
Authorities have identified a man killed in a shooting outside a gun show at a former shopping mall in Ohio, but it's still not clear what sparked the gunfire. The shooting at the Westland Mall in Columbus was reported about 4 p.m. Sunday.
Responding police officers found Sage Martin, 21, on the sidewalk in front of the mall. He had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. The shooting apparently occurred in the mall parking lot, and authorities do not believe it was a random incident. It appears that at least two people were involved, but no arrests have been made. It wasn't clear if Martin had attended the gun show, which officials said was winding down when the shooting occurred. The mall has been vacant for years, but still hosts events periodically. thecourier.com

Professionalism or the lack thereof is a reflection of a person's inner self. How an executive presents themselves and talks about their former jobs, bosses and colleagues is a real indication of how they'll talk tomorrow about who they're working with today. And while it's human nature to be interested in the gossip, it's usually the wolf in sheep's clothing and the one who has the need to rationalize that has the most to say.

Just a Thought,
Gus
